Talking Top Tips! #6

Date: 31st Jan 2022 @ 5:54pm

Hello!

So far in our Talking Top Tips series we have shared the importance of getting your child’s attention before you speak to them and some ways you can help to develop and broaden your child’s vocabulary. We have also looked at mirroring, giving children sufficient wait time and thinking about commenting over questioning.

This week, I wanted to share some ideas around bath time, a wonderful time for developing your child's vocabulary!

There are many ways to make bath time more fun and sensory, from fancy potions that turn your whole bath to slime, to good old fashioned bubbles! There are bath crayons, pouring toys, colour changing fish and a world of fantastic toys and resources that can really help to broaden your child's vocabulary.

Every child will have a different level of language around bath time, but here are some activities and language you might want to focus on...

Bath, tap, rubber duck, shampoo, soap, toilet, towel, bubble, water...

Particularly for younger children, simply naming objects you might come across in the bathroom can be a challenge! Ensuring children are confident naming these objects will help to make sure they are able to follow instructions at bath time too!

Floating, sinking, full, empty, washing, rinsing....

There are some really tricky concepts that can be developed through water play! Try experimenting with what sinks, and what floats! It is also a great opportunity for looking at action words that end with -ing as many children find this difficult. Adding bubbles at comparing floating on top of the water to floating in the aire would be a great way to challenge a confident talker!

Arms, legs, hair, back, hands, feet...

Bath time is a great time to learn the names of the different body parts! You could simply comment to your child ' you are washing your leg' or give them a choice such as ' would you like to wash your feet or your knees next?'

Good luck! And as always, please come and speak to me if you have any concerns!

ANGLES! ANGLES! ANGLES!

Date: 31st Jan 2022 @ 5:45pm

Today we have been calculating missing angles in straight lines and around a point. We will also be learning to calculate missing angles in triangles this week. Play the game to practise calculating missing angles. How many points can you get? Can you beat Mr Leverton?

5 house points for anyone who can tell us what the difference is between a complementary angle and a supplementary angle!

Today Reception had a special delivery - some new boxes and a story! We read our new story, 'On Sudden Hill', and talked lots about all the amazing things our boxes could be.

Then we spent all day being creative and playing in our boxes, being different characters and turning our boxes into anything we wanted!

We made castles, race cars, houses, unicorns, lions, spaceships, dinosaurs, soldiers, dragons, and pirate ships. It was lots of fun!

Ancient Greek Day!

Date: 28th Jan 2022 @ 4:05pm

Last week, Year 5 had a brilliant day of learning with our Ancient Greek visitors! The children learnt all about the lives of the people living in Athens and Sparta, how to be a Greek warrior and put on a Greek play!

Art with Mrs McAffer

Date: 27th Jan 2022 @ 10:20am

This week we have had the pleasure of working with Mrs McAffer for our Art learning. We learnt about using our observational skills to draw objects that are bigger, smaller, wider, thinner, longer and shorter. We learnt about using a continuous line to draw and had a go in our sketch books. We were given a toy that we had to draw using our observational skills using graphite pencils and then coloured it in using oil pastels. It was lost of fun and we can't wait to see what we will be doing next week!!

Fantastic Fractions!

Date: 23rd Jan 2022 @ 12:58pm

This half-term, year 4 have been exploring all things to do with fractions. We have worked hard at understanding the purpose of a fraction, discovered equivalent fractions, and added/subtracted fractions with the same denominator.

Though challenging at first, year 4 have persevered and are now amazing fraction finders.

Well done, Year 4 :)

Making Noi a boat!

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 3:56pm

This week Reception have been reading the story 'The Storm Whale in Winter'. We had a good think about how we could help Noi and his Dad get home from the lighthouse and decided that we would make them a boat!

We did lots of fun experiments about which matierals float and which sink which helped us decide what we should use to make our boats.

We spent some time designing our boats and labelling them with the materials we would use, and then we worked together to make our boats and tested them in the water area!

ICT- Using Beebots

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 2:22pm

This week in ICT we were introduced to the programmable toy - Beebots. This linked very nicely to our toys topic this half term where we compared and sorted old and new toys. We found out that new toys needed batteries or we had to charge them up using electricity. Beebots needed batteries and some needed to be charged up using their special tray and electricity. Beebots are toys that need to be programmed or given an input in order for it to move. We used the following commands to programme the Beebots and give it an input to make it move:

forwards

backwards

left

right

The Beebot moved once the commands were inputted, which was the output. We were learning lots of technical language and were amazed that we were able to program something to make it move!!!

2D shapes

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 1:35pm

This week in maths 2HR have been learning about 2D shapes! We have had fun identifying the names and properties of the shapes through exploration and playing fun games. We have also been sorting the shapes on Venn diagrams according to their properties and some children have even thought of their own categories to sort them into!

This week in 3MS

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 12:55pm

We have had a very busy week in year 3 this week!

We started looking at fractions using shapes. We have been using the language of 'numerator', 'denominator' and 'equal parts'. Our challenge was to order the fractions and then to match the fraction to the decimal place. Check out how we did in the photos.

This half term we will be learning about The Stone Age in our connected curriculum lessons. For our launch, we explored Stone Henge through Google Earth and thought about who put it there and what it might have been used for. We used our comparison skills to spot the changes over time from the Stone Age to modern day. We even had a go at recreating Stone Henge out of biscuits!

2D Shape sort

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 10:44pm

This week we have been practising our 2D shapes and identifying different properties. Can you practise shape sorting with this game?

Colour mixing!

Date: 19th Jan 2022 @ 8:43am

This week we have been experimenting with colour. We loved mixing the primary colours in water and seeing which colours we could make. We made our own colour charts so that we could remember how to make new colours when we play independently in the classroom.

More Science!

Date: 16th Jan 2022 @ 8:09am

5CR really do enjoy their Science lessons. This week, we were thinking about how we change as we get older. We compared the similarities and differences between us as children and us as babies. The class definitely enjoyed trying to figure out which baby was which child. The photo of Mrs. Caine as a baby really confused them!

Greek Workshop Day

Date: 16th Jan 2022 @ 8:05am

Year 5 had a fantastic time during their Greek super learning day. They investigated Greek artefacts, learned about the ancient Greek cities of Sparta and Athens and made some Greek tiles. By the end of the day, most children agreed that they'd rather live in Athens. Sparta seemed like a very harsh place to live!

Maths Workshop

Date: 15th Jan 2022 @ 5:03pm

On Tuesday we had a visitor called Liam who delivered a maths workshop for us. He set us a challenge to use large 2D shapes to create some pictures. It was a bit challenging but with some perseverence and teamwork we were able to make the pictures using the shapes.

Parts of a River

Date: 14th Jan 2022 @ 2:55pm

In geography, we have been investigating the different parts of a river. We have learned some tricky new vocabulary. See if you can explain which part of a river each of these words is for:

  • bank
  • basin
  • floodplain
  • tributary
  • meander
  • mouth
  • sediment
  • silt
  • source
