Friday 15th May: Phonics - Rhyme
Date: 15th May 2020 @ 7:01am
Hi Nursery!
Let’s remember some of the animals from the rhyming stories we have looked at this week…
You can remind yourself of them by listening to the stories again - just click on the picture of the book below:
Can you act out some of the animals from the story? Enjoy moving around like the animals. For example: a jumping frog, parrot flapping/flying, gorilla thumping chest, snake slithering along the floor, mule trotting, hare hopping, dog responding to instructions (walk, stop, sit, fetch, lie-down)
This week we have found lots of rhyming pairs and created rhyming strings of words.
Now we are going to complete this fun activity, where you need to have a look at the pictures on the rhyming strips to see if you can spot the odd one out!
Watch today’s ‘show me’ for an example, then use the pictures below to have a go at finding the ‘odd one out’ yourself!
CLICK HERE TO WATCH TODAY’S SHOW ME
Good luck!
Date: 15th May 2020 @ 6:46am
Good Morning Nursery!
This week we have looked at the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. In the story the caterpillar eats through some different foods each day.
Can you remember the seven days of the week?
Let’s sing our days of the week song!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY
We have been looking at the sequence of events in the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
Yesterday your challenge was to make your very own ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ and to use your caterpillar to talk about the sequence of events in the story.
I hope you enjoyed making it and talking about what the caterpillar ate each day.
Today I would like you to think about the different activities you do each day.
Here is today’s challenge…
With your grown up, talk about the different activities you do each day.
Create a caterpillar template like the example below and draw a picture or symbol of something you do for each day of the week.
Use your caterpillar to talk through the sequence of the activities you do. Remember to use good sentences when talking. Point to each day on your caterpillar and tell your family the event that you do.
Amazing work!
Well done everyone, you have completed some Marvellous Maths this week!
Remember, we love seeing your work so send your pictures to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
I hope you have a great weekend!

Let’s Celebrate!
Well this week has flown by! Thank you so much to the parents that have been able to take the time to send us your learning we really do love seeing your learning as well as the different things you are getting up to whilst at home.
What an amazing role model. This learning is presented so beautifully! It looks like you are becoming really confident using your part whole bars to help you to subtract. Well done!
Here is another example of perfect presentation. It is lovely to see you working through all of your home learning challenges. Well done!
Here is another person working hard at home with his learning. We love seeing your learning spaces and desks at home, it makes us very proud of you all!
We had to double check that this was really one of our year one children’s work! What beautiful hand writing. I think this person is definitely ready for year 2!
It’s great to see you becoming more and more confident in using a variety of methods to solve subtraction. It looks like this person is definitely getting the hang of it. Great job!
It looks like this person has really got the hang of writing their numbers using words.
Isn’t it just great that we have been able to take our learning outside? Here’s one of our year one children practicing words with different end blends whilst playing hopscotch.
Here is another person working really hard ordering their numbers. Well done!
We really love putting this blog post together on Fridays. It makes us feel so proud and pleased to see you all so busy and carrying on trying your hardest with all of your home learning. I know it feels like we haven’t been in school for ages but keep going and practicing all of your skills so that when we return we can spend lots of time creating memories and learning lots of new things.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Miss Riley and Miss Wolfenden
Friday sentence of the day and phonics
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 7:36pm
It’s Friday! This week seems to have zoomed by!
It has been lovely to see lots of you busy with your learning this week. Remember that you can still go on Lexia and active learn so that you can practice your reading skills every day.
Sentence of the day
Here are the answers for yesterday. There were quite a few mistakes yesterday. Well done to the children who used their amazing phonics skills to make sure the words were spelt correctly.
On Thursday Sophie dug a deep hole in the garden, in the hole she found wriggly worms and creepy crawlers. When the deep dark hole was dug she planted her favourite tree and crossed her fingers that it would grow big and tall.
Here is our last sentence of the week. This sentence has a mixture of all of the things you’ve looked for this week that need correcting – full stops, capital letters, phonics. Let’s see who’s up for the challenge!
on Monday jack came hoam with a handful of magical beans. his mother was furious and she frew them out of the windoa__
Phonics
Let’s have a quick recap of the end blends from yesterday.
lk nt sk lp lf
Play a game of rally robin with a family member. How many words can you both remember with the above end blends? Take turns to say a word, you can clap hands so that you remember whose turn it is.
Today we are going to be practicing our tricky words.
Challenge one – Get our your tricky word mat, or make another, and play a game of fastest. Your grown up will say a word and you have to point to it. Take turns, can you find the words faster than your grown up?
Challenge two – Play a game of bingo with your family. Write all of the words down, fold them up and put them in a pot. Ask the people playing to make their own bingo board with 6 words on. You can be the bingo caller or a player it’s up to you!
Challenge three – Quiz time. Ask your grown-ups to read the word and you write them down. See how many words you can spell correctly. If there were some you found extra tricky you know that these are the ones you need to practice.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend! Don’t forget to check back later for our special Friday celebration!

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 7
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 1:07pm
Well, well, here we are again-back at the house on Haunted Hill! I'm still a bit spooked by the mirror story yesterday. Maddison has decided that she thinks we should climb the stairs so that is what we shall do next.
Here we go...
You grip the dusty banister and climb the spiral staircase, an open window above you spills light to the stairs and eerie shadows dance all around you. The sooner you can leave, the better you think to yourself.
As you arrive at the top of the stairs, you see two doors. You must choose one.
Do you:
Open the left door
Open the right door
The one thing I am loving about this adventure is the fab vocabulary that is used to describe the settings. (eerie shadows dance...)
So now you are given two choices- what will you choose to do? It is a risk but remember we need to find that Ruby Heart!
I wonder who will Tweet or email the answer first?
Weekly Connected Curriculum Challenge: Celebrating Special Times
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 12:23pm
Celebrating Special Times
Hi Nursery!
This week for our Connected Curriculum learning, we are thinking about special times and celebrations that we share with our family. (Please refer back to the Connected Curriculum blog posted on Monday)
Your challenge is to plan and prepare a celebration for your favourite teddy / toy!
Yesterday we had a birthday party for one of my daughter’s teddy – Rosie!
We set out some party food and invited some of Rosie’s friends to have a little tea party.
We then danced to some music and played some party games!
We made Rosie a yummy chocolate birthday cake. We put candles on top and sang Happy Birthday to her!
After that we gave Rosie a birthday card that we had made too!
How old do you think Rosie is now? Can you count the candles on her cake and card and say her special number?
Have you planned and prepared a celebration for your teddy / toy’s birthday?
Think about…
How are you going to celebrate? What will you do?
Maybe you would like to have a party, or maybe you would like to make a birthday card or hat.
What do you need to do to prepare a party? Where is the party going to be? What food do you need? Maybe you could make some decorations or even bake a cake!
Think about how old your teddy/toy is going to be.
What special number do you know? How many candles do you need to put on your cake?
Can you draw a picture of a cake and put on the amount of candles for your special number?
Can you make a birthday card, hat or a badge to show your special number?
Remember we would love to see some pictures of you and your favourite teddy / toy celebrating too. Send them to nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Enjoy celebrating!

Thursday Sentence of the day and phonics
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 10:24am
Good Morning! Can you believe it’s Thursday already!
It has been lovely to see lots of you busy with your learning. Remember that you can still go on Lexia and active learn so that you can practice your reading skills every day.
Sentence of the day
Here are the answers for yesterday. Well done if you spotted it – the capital letters were missing. We need capital letters at the start of the sentence and for names and days of the week.
Joe loves gardening when the weather gets warmer. Last Sunday he purchased some tiny round seeds from the shop. When he got home he found a large shiny pot and planted the seeds deep into the soggy brown mud.
Today’s sentence of the day is all about your phonics. Some of the words are spelt incorrectly, use your sound mats to make sure they are correct.
On Thersday Sophie dug a deep hole in the grdn, in the hole she fownd wriggly worms and creepy crawlers. Wen the deep dark hole was dug she plantid her favourite tree and crossed her fingurs that it wud grow big and tall.
Phonics
Let’s start todays phonics by practicing the end blends that you looked at yesterday.
nk st nd mp ft
Write the end blends on paper and put them around a room. Ask your grown up to read these words. Listen to the word they read and then stand next to the end blend that it matches.
bunk loft trump
toast ghost trunk
hand found hound
jump lump sealift
Today you are going to be looking at end blends again. End blends are blends that come at the end of a word. Watch the youtube video to find out more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCVcdFN-Ov0
Here are our blends today…
lk nt sk lp lf
Practice reading the blends one by one
Here are your three challenges…
Challenge one – Watch the video and write down the different words with the end blends in them. If you can think of any other words that match the blends then write them down too. Copy all of the words so that you have two sets.
Challenge two – Play a game of pairs with a family member. If you find a pair you win the cards, if not turn them over and wait for your next turn.
Challenge three – Silly sentences- how many silly sentences can you write using the words?
Hope you have a lovely day! Don’t forget to send us your learning. We love seeing your smiling faces!

Good morning everyone,
I've had a request to make the font on my blog a little easier to read so that some of the younger children can have a go at reading it themselves which is a fantastic idea, so hopefully this will be a bit easier to read!
I hope people enjoyed yesterdays challenge, I know that some people did the Jason Manford quiz at 1.30 so if anyone didn't get the chance to watch Friday the turtle or had any problems accessing the Facebook live video then here it is on YouTube today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvhZZq0UnJI
Today's challenge is one that will hopefully make you and others around you smile. I want you to tell someone a joke! In fact, I think you should try and make as many people laugh as possible! Laughing is very good for both your health and wellbeing and it's certainly one of my favourite things to do, especially if I'm feeling a bit sad.
If you don't know any jokes then have a look at these:

Here are some that I like!
What do elves learn in school?
The elf-abet.
Why didn’t the skeleton go to the dance?
He had no body to dance with.
Please e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk with your best jokes or any stories of making people laugh.

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 20
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 9:56am
Good morning year 6. Another super, sunny morning. It was very tricky reading this morning as it was so bright in my living room and there is a noisy engineer in my kitchen attempting to fix my oven! It was very hard to concentrate especially at this very exciting part of the story.
Here we go...
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=ztD2Aym
Did you pick up on the HUGE clue at the start of the chapter? Please Tweet it to us or email it at y6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Now I would like you to summarise that chapter in just THREE short sentences! Try just to focus on the three main things that happened in this chapter. E.g. What happened to Tom and the narrator? Who they met? How did it end?
What do you think will happen when Tom and the narrator get home to their parents?
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 9:38am
Good morning Year 6,
I hope you are all doing well. Here is today's maths task.
Remember to check into padlet to check out lots of other activities and links for reading, writing , maths , well-being, connected curriculum learning and music. Lots of you are finding it easier to see all your activities at once like a timetable. https://padlet.com/y6homelearning/nxkcu8zxxd8kmxo7

- 54 > 19 (any smaller number)
- 5 x 5 = 25
- half of 26 = 13
- 15cm + 14cm = 29cm
English Challenge
Today I would like you to focus on suffixes. A suffix is a few letters placed at the end of a word to change its meaning. I have listed some words below which can be changed using the suffixes:
ing, est, ness, ful, ly.
It is your job to decide which suffix goes at the end of each word.
extreme
argue
quick
move
enjoy
gently
dark
care
forget
kind
Extension: Once you have added the suffixes, I would like you to choose five words and put them in to sentences.
Maths Challenge
Todays Maths challenge is going to be a little bit different. Please watch my clip to see what I would like you to do today and use the number sentences below for the task set.

Good Morning Reception!!
Firstly, I want to show off some amazing work we have received this week from some of our wonderful children linked to the story ‘The Snail and the Whale.’
Well Done!!!
Today I would like you to think about the two main characters in the story, Snail and the Whale… What do they look like? What colours can you see? What shapes can you see? What size are the animals? Talk to your grown up about one of the animals. Remember to talk in full sentences…
Choose one character and write some sentences describing it and draw a picture of the animal.
For example,
The Snail has a hard shell on his back. The shell has a striped pattern that is brown and white. It moves very slowly because it is a small animal.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 9:11am
Good Morning Reception!
Are you ready for your maths learning today??
Let’s warm up by listening to maths song and completing the fluent-in-five questions below…

Today in our maths blog, we are going to be learning about subtraction (taking away.)
Below I have posted some links to the songs, 10 Green Bottles and 5 Current Buns! Maybe you could make your own bottles and buns and practise taking away yourselves? Can you say how many you have left each time? Can you write this as a subtraction calculation?
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 9:10am
Hello everyone!
A massive well done to: Faith, Navaeh , Michelle , Maddison, Zarek , Haya and Naomi who all correctly identified the flag was Italy and its capital city, Rome. There were lots of landmarks and foods too - the leaning tower of Pisa and pasta were just two of the suggestions.
5 house points to you all when we get back to school !
How about this flag ? Can you name the country, capital and any famous people who come from this country? Email us on : Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk if you know the answer. Good luck !
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 9:02am
Good Morning Reception!!
Let’s start today’s phonic activity by joining in with a new song called the oo sound song. Click the video at the bottom of the blog.
I know after reading some of your emails and watching your videos that it is a little bit confusing when thinking about the way we say words with the long and short oo sound.
Watch my video at the bottom of the blog where I am explaining how to read words with the long and short oo sounds.
Can you read these words with the long and short oo sounds? How many can you read? Ask a grown up to time you.
Today’s practise and apply activities are all about the long and short ‘oo’ sound. Choose 1, 2, 3 or all 4 activities. Which one will you choose?
Can you sort out the words into the correct box in the table?
Play long oo and short oo treasure hunt. Cut up or write the words and hide them in a space inside or outside. Find a word and read it and put it in the right container labelled short oo or long oo.
Play the short and long ‘oo’ roll and read game.
Choose the long and short sound stories. Can you read them and make a list of all the words with the short or long ‘oo’ sounds?
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to… receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good morning Year 5!
Well, the Hodges house have been awake for a VERY long time, because we have a very excited 8 year old...it's Livvi's birthday today! She's had a lovely morning of opening some presents, and we're about to watch a surprise video of lots of her friends wishing her a 'Happy Birthday', since she can't see them in person! I managed to get the cake finished - the buttercream colour was darker than I was hoping for, but Livvi loves it and I'm reminding myself that that's what matters! I've attached a photo for you to see!
Let us know what you get up to today, and remember to email us your learning!

Hello from Miss Wendt!
I think the first thing to say today is Happy Birthday Livvi! I can imagine the excitement in the Hodges household this morning, especially looking at that wonderful cake!
Here are today's fluent in five questions:-
Como esta el clima?
As promised, today we are going to learn some new Spanish vocabulary - all about the weather!
What do you think the question above means?
Here is a short video which will introduce the vocabulary words and phrases. I will be back later with an activity for you to complete!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6U8NgZXztc
Here are the fluent in five answers!
I've also added a document for you to download at home. It's a chatterbox (sometimes called a fortune teller!) to help you remember the different ways we can talk about the weather in Spanish!

Good Morning Year 5 from Miss Brookes!
Happy Birthday Livvi! I hope you have the fabulous day that you deserve That cake looks amazing - you should be very proud of yourself Mrs Hodges (and Mr Hodges for the baking part!)
This weekend we're going to have a 'family bake off.' My Dad is going to choose a picture of a cake from the internet, and then - with no recipe - my mum and I, and my sister and her step-daughter, are going to compete to see who can make the best version of that cake! I will make sure to send pictures on Monday so you can help judge the winner.
Yesterday's GVP work was amazing - I received some fantastic emails, so I've attached some to the blog post. They show some brilliant phrases for cohesion. Well done Akin, Auryn and Jennifer!
Now, onto today's learning.
Today's GVP is focused on punctuation, and more importantly, apostrophes. This is something a lot of us use incorrectly at times, which is why we're looking at it today.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=jRLoHTM
Check back later, as I am going to attach the answers to today's blog post.
So far in these past three weeks, we have looked at all of our year 5 objectives and recapped some of our year 4 objectives. Please email me and let me know which objectives you found the most challenging, or want to practice more, and then I can include them in next weeks videos.

Thursday 14th May: Phonics - Rhyme
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 6:31am
Good Morning!
This week we have been learning about rhyme. Why don't you listen and join in some of your favourite rhymes by clicking on the link below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/curations/nursery-rhymes
I have really enjoyed looking at the rhyming story ‘Oi Frog’, I hope you have too!
Now today we are going to look another rhyming book called ‘Oi Cat’.
You can listen to ‘Oi cat’ by clicking on the link below. When you are listening to the story see is you can hear rhyming pairs of words. You may even be able to help make a rhyming string too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7G2CNKhDbA
Did you hear lots of rhyming words in the story? Did you help to make a rhyming string?
Fantastic!
For today’s challenge, you are going to create rhyming strings by playing a game called:
Cat in a hat: A list with a twist!
What you’ll need: paper, pen
What to do:
1. On a big sheet of paper, write the word cat. Then underneath write the rhyming sound all down the page (_at).
2. Adults: Ask your child to come up with as many rhyming words as they can. Quite simply, they have to add a letter to the beginning of the word. Don’t worry if it’s a real word or not!
3. Take turns to come up with silly sentences based on the rhymes. Can you make each other laugh?
Play the game again for:
Dog on a log: A list with a twist!
Repeat the game as above, making another list of words that rhyme with the word dog.
We would love to see your rhyming string so make sure you send pictures of your learning to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
I hope you have fun creating your rhyming strings!
Have a great day!
Date: 14th May 2020 @ 6:24am
Let’s get started today by singing the Days of the week!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY
Yesterday you listened to the story of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’. If you missed it then take a look using the link below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY
You then used pictures from the story to talk about the sequence of events, using language: first, then, next, after and finally.
Think about the events of the story. Can you remember the order of fruits and food the caterpillar ate? Use the picture cards below to help you.
Talk through the pictures with your grown up and tell them the sequence of what the caterpillar ate.
Today’s challenge is to make your own lift the flap Hungry Caterpillar so you can talk through the sequence of what the caterpillar ate. Take a look at the picture below for an idea of what you will be making!
Ask an adult to help you to prepare the caterpillar.
- Fold a piece of paper and draw 8 circles, starting at the fold.
- Cut out the circles (Remember not to cut along the fold, otherwise the flaps won’t lift!) You might like to colour and draw a face on the first circle (this can just be a flat circle – no flap needed!)
- Next stick the circles on to a long strip of paper, or place them in order. Starting with the head, followed by all the other lift up circles.
- Ask your grown up to write the days on the top of each flap, starting with Monday to Sunday.
- Now use the picture cards below to see the order of what the caterpillar ate, starting with 1 apple.
- Lift up the flap and under each day draw what the caterpillar ate. So under Monday you will need to draw 1 apple, under Tuesday 2 pears and so on.
- You might like to add some colour to your caterpillar and foods.
AMAZING!
Once you have completed drawing the pictures and have coloured your caterpillar, use your caterpillar to tell your grown up the sequence of what he ate by lifting up each flap in turn.
I hope you enjoy creating your caterpillar. We would love to see your work so send your pictures to nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
Have a great day!

Hello everybody,
It has been lovely to see photographs of the children's learning and we are very grateful for all the parents who have taken the time to send photographs in to celebrate their child's work.It is really important that you continue to learn at home so that learning is easier when you come back to school. Try your very hardest to focus and concentrate and remember it is ok if you find learning hard some days as long as you 'have a go' and try your best.
We hope you are all ok and are ready for more learning today. Today we are going to focus on using the bar model strategy to solve subtracttion problems.

Well we have a response from Haya! Are you ready?
She has selected...
Examine the mirror
You warily walk towards the mirror noting as you get closer the sheer size of it. It has to be the largest mirror you’ve ever seen, twice your height and four times your width at least.
The ornate golden frame looks chipped and worn and you wipe the surface with your hand removing dust and cobwebs. Your reflection looks back at you eerily, then smiles.
Your reflection’s hand snakes out and pulls you closer to the mirror. You try to resist but your opposite is much stronger. It pulls you into the frame and you feel a sucking sensation as you are pulled into the mirror itself. A sudden snap cracks and then you are face to face with your reflection once more, only this time you have switched places.
You try to grab the mirror creature but your hand smacks solidly against the glass, you are trapped inside the mirror!
Your reflection smiles, waves and strolls away. You are stuck, forever!
ARRGGGHHH!! Nooo!
How spooky was that? It made a shiver go right down my spine just imagining that happening to me!
Not to worry we will go back to the hall and choose another path to follow to find the ruby heart! We are now left with two choices...
Open the door
Climb the stairs
