This week the children have been using the balance scales to weigh objects. They have been using comparitive language e.g. heavier, heaviest, lighter and lightest to compare the weight of objects. Then the children weighed different objects and used non-standard measures e.g. cubes to find out how many cubes each object weighed.
The children then recorded their work using pictures and symbols. They enjoyed estimating how many cubes each object weighed.

The children returned back to school this week and were surprised to see that the classroom had a new reading area. The reading area has completely changed and is now a relaxing beach area where they can sit, relax and read a book of their choice, for pleasure. It is extremely popular and the children are constantly asking to read. Come and have a look when you drop your child off or collect your child at the beginning or end of the day.

As part of the guided reading sessions this week the children were asked to read instructions on how to make a cup and ball game. The children read the instructions -step by step and used the collage materials from the creative area to make the game. Some of the words were really difficult to read so the children had to use their knowledge of alternate sounds to try and make sense of the words they were reading.
Date: 7th Feb 2020 @ 6:16pm
The children have been trying to learn and remember as many new words as they can this week. They have been using the word aware rap to help them remember some of the vocabulary from their English lessons.
If they would like to 'have a go' at home then follow this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=428l9PIED
The children then used the round robin clapping game to recall as many words as possible
They remembered some excellent words!

Victorian times at Clayton Hall
Date: 7th Feb 2020 @ 5:51pm
The children really enjoyed visiting Clayton Hall this week. They all got an opportunity to dress up in victorian clothing and experience what it would have been like to live in victorian times.
Some of the children got busy in the kitchen and used an antique food chopper to cut carrots and herbs to make vegetable soup.
It was a team effort !
Some of the children had tougher jobs to do than others and had to use all their energy to wash, dry and iron clothes in the wash house.
After all the hard work the children relaxed . They played card games, chess and used the writing table.
Some of the children thought there was a pigeon in the room because they saw a feather in the table. They found out that people used quills to write in victorian times.
The children didn't want to leave and asked to go back. The staff at Clayton Hall said "We would love to see all the families visiting the hall ."
The next open day is on Saturday 15th february if you would like to visit

In Year one this week we have been developing our drawing skills. We have been learning about how to use shapes and use shading to draw toys. We looked closely at some photographs of toys and then 'had a go' at drawing them. It was really tricky to measure the length of the head and body and then add shading to create a 'furry'effect. We really enjoyed the challenge. The hard work really paid off !!!!!

As part of the topic work toys old and new the children have been reading the book 'The magical toybox'. The story is about toys that come to life. The children have enjoyed finding out about what the toys get up to when Lucy the little girl goes to sleep.
The children have enjoyed making the characters from the story in the creative area. They used collage paper, split pins and felt tips to create giraffes, hippos, teddy bears and lions.

This term we are learning all about old and new toys.
On Friday we all brought our favourite toys into school. We had lots of fun sharing our toys with each other and playing different games. We loved playing board games like snakes and ladders and learnt how to play guess who. William in Miss Rileys class was a great bingo caller and we played a whole class game of bingo!
In the afternoon we were very lucky and had a special visitor who showed us some old toys and taught us how to play with them. We loved learning about the old toys, especially 'jacks' and 'shut the box'.

The children have really enjoyed learning how to follow and give instructions to each other this week. They have programming the Beebots to follow a set of directional instructions to make them move around a grid. The children found this fun and didn't stop laughing. As you can see one of the Beebots didn't like to listen and decided to have a nosey at the what was happening in the classroom instead.

The children have been learning about the importance of washing their hands. The Nurse came into school this week and showed the children how to wash their hands and talked about why they needed to wash their hands too! She gave the children handwashing posters to use in school to help them remember how to wash their hands correctly and taught them a song to sing too!
Handwashing song (Tune of row row row your boat)
Wash, wash, wash your hands, wash nasty germs away,
If you don’t you might get ill and that would spoil your day.
Date: 1st May 2019 @ 9:14am
Because we are learning about toys in our connected curriculum lessons we were allowed to bring in our toys from home. We had so much fun playing with our toys and sharing them with our friends! We were comparing our toys to toys from the past and thinking about whether our grandparents would have played with these toys.
Date: 8th Apr 2019 @ 9:05am
We have been learning all about transport this term. For holiday homework we would like the children to make something linked with transport. You can be as creative as you would like!
Some potential ideas:
Make a new type of transport
Make an information poster about a type of transport
Use junk modelling to make a form of transport
Research an old type of transport and compare it to transport today
Write a story about a time of transport
Tell us about a time that you used a type of transport
We can’t wait to see what you create!

We invited our parents in to look at all the amazing learning we have been doing about Africa.
We paraded into classroom on our catwalk singing a traditional african song.

He was a very important person!

We have been learning about materials in our science lessons. We decided to build houses out of materials to see which houses the big bad wolf could blow down. The materials we chose were; metal, cardboard, paper, plastic and wood.
The big bad wolf arrived in our classroom to blow our houses down!
He blew the metal house, the cardboard house and the wood house down. At first he couldn't blow the paper house down but we realised that it wasn't fair because he stood really far away from the paper house and really close to the other houses! We said he needed to be fair and do it from the same distance for each house. When he did this the paper house blew down straight away! The only house he couldn't blow down was the plastic house so we decided this was the best material to use as it was the strongest.

On Monday 18th March year 1 took a trip to the airport. Unfortunatly we didn't get on a plane and go somewhere hot and sunny but we did have a great time learning all about the airport and the different airplanes!
We loved learning about the different people who work in the airport and especially enjoyed dressing up as all of the different people. We all also got the chance to be pilots in an old planes. We got taken to lots of different places including Turkey, Disney land, Northern Ireland, we even went all the way to Africa on some flights!
Captain Winnie and Second in Command Winnie wizzed us off to Africa whilst engineers Payton and Harrison manned the engines.
During the trip we were also lucky enough to have a look at the concorde - the fastest passenger plane! We counting its wheels - 13 we think!

We have been working on our painting skills with the artist.
First we had to paint a background. We used oil pastels to create texture in our paintings.
Next we had to paint patterns. Some people chose zig zags, straight lines, stripes, wavy lines.
Then we had to cut shapes out using our patterned paper.
We stuck this altogether on our textured background to make a beautiful castle painting.
Do you like it?

We made buses for the Naughty Bus so he wouldn't be lonely but he stole our buses and made them naughty too!
When we were making our buses we knew we needed an axle and a wheel so that our buses could move.
The buses went off on an adventure to all the different countries in the United Kingdom.
Did you know?
The capital city of England is London.
The capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh.
The capital city of Wales is Cardiff.
The capital city of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
We found all the countries on a map and we coloured in the flags the correct colour.

We have been learning all about types of transport this term. We went on a school trip to Manchester Airport! We learned lots of information about aeroplanes and saw lots taking off and landing! We even got to dress up as pilots and go in the flight deck. We had so much fun!
Did you know?
The Concorde had a pointy nose so the pilots couldn't see when they were taking off!
The Queen had her own special seat on the Concorde. She sat in seat 1A.
The Concorde was too expensive for people to travel on so they stopped flying it.

We had a story delivered to our school by a secret visitor. We read the book and it was all about Daddy bear being kept awake by lots of different sounds. We thought maybe we had been given this book because we have been learning all about our sounds.
We acted out all the different sounds in the book. Can you guess what action we are doing?
Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:44pm
We have been thinking about how to make our sentences super!

Finger spaces
Segment the sounds (use our phonics)
Get a sound mat to help
Stretch out all of the sounds
Full stop

This term we are going to be learning about Nelson Mandela in our Connected Curriculum lessons, so to get us prepared we have been listening to the song 'Nelson Mandela' by the Specials and have been creating our very own dance moves to match.
