Week 2-Session 3

Focus: More or Less

Today we are going to focus on comparing amounts, numbers and quantities. Have a look at this video to remind you what more and less/fewer means.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7d-IjlZSyw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TJznmLsZAs

Now have a go at the activities in your pack. Remember when you find less than something the amount gets smaller because something is being taken away. When you find more than an amount the amount/number gets bigger because something is being added.

When you have completed the tasks have a go at playing  this game. You have to find one more and one less than an amount. then as a challenge you have to then find ten more.ten less. let us know how you got on!

Keep working hard!

Wonderful Wednesday- sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 7:31am

Good Morning!

I hope you are all ok. I've had a lovely few days in school with the key worker children, it's made me miss you all very much and has made me think about all the things we will be able to catch up on when we come back to school - whenever that may be!

I know we all love a joke in year one so heres a few to make you all laugh this morning...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgtJhkz_4EU

Sentence of the day

This week are improving the sentences by making them a little more exciting! Todays challenge is to think of the different meals that the Naughty bus could have ruined. Re-write your sentences and don't forget to make them exciting!

sentence
Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on the split digraphs i-e and o-e.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9JSTYL7vyc - i-e

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDms5bRsvq4 - o-e

Listen to the videos of Geraldine the Giraffe. Can you find any objects in your house that have the i-e and o-e sounds in them? Can you label these objects?

In your home learning packs you have lots of words with the i-e and o-e sounds in them. Can you make up any fun games to help you read the words? How about beat the clock ? Read as many words as you can in 1 minute. Can you beat your score?

English Writing

This week I would like to set you a challenge. I have been reading lots of funny and uplifting poems from children on the internet and they have really brightened up my days. Can you use the ay, a-e and ai words to make a funny or uplifting poem or story that will make your family and friends smile?

Here's one from me...

Being in the house can be a pain

But atleast our days aren't full of rain

I can still go outside, smile and play

and have lots of fun through the day

When this is over I'll shout hurray

I'll jump and i'll skip all through the day

Dont forget to take some pictures of all the fun activities you're doing and send them to y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk we'd love to see what you're up to ! Also if you have any questions please email us !

Hope you all have a lovely Wednesday!

Don't forget to take a break, do some colouring and make sure your mind is happy :)

Wellbeing challenge number 3

Date: 31st Mar 2020 @ 10:49am

Hello everyone!

Today's challenge is something that I often enjoy doing when I'm feeling a little sad or worried about something.

Today I am challenging you to cook or bake something! If you can't do it today then why not plan something to make later in the week or even at the weekend?

Take a look at this website that has plenty of easy and healthy recipes to look or see if you can invent something that includes the contents of your fridge or cupboard https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes

Yesterday I made these cheese scones for me and my husband to have for lunch this week (they're not very healthy but they're very tasty and it's okay to have a little treat once in a while! cheeky)

Make sure you ask an adult to help you with any cooking or cutting and don't do anything before you check it's okay!

Have fun,

Mrs Glover

A big thanks to Miss Kenwell who sent me a picture of her sunshine yesterday (pictured below), she put my drawing to shame! laugh

Sentence of the day

This week are improving the sentences by making them a little more exciting! Todays challenge is to think of as many words as you can to describe the Naughty Bus. How many different exciting sentences can you write that are better than mine?

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on those common exception words. Just like last week you have your common excpetion booklet in your home learning packs with lot's of activities to do. But remember there is lots of fun you can have with common excpetion words... Can you play a game of hide and seek the words, if you have chalks can you write them BIG on the floor?

Here's a link to some games you can play on phonics play ... play the games that say HFW :)

Week 2 -Session 2

Number pairs to 20

Today the maths learning is going to be a challenge. Last week we practised making number pairs to 10 and this week we are going to extend it to 20. Which 2 numbers when added together make 20?

Listen to this song and it might help you to work it out!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EsPtTkwNIo

It is really important that the children get to  explore the different ways to make 20.  Watch this video to see how to make the pairs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ilGm8cD77c

Number pairs to 20 at home

  • Give your child twenty counters (Lego bricks, past shapes, buttons, sweets) and ask them questions such as: What do you add to 13 to make 20? What do you add to 12 to make 20? Encourage them to use the counters to work it out.
  • Write a list of ten numbers then time your child to see how long it takes them to write down the other number that makes up each pair (2 and 18; 5 and 15; 4 and 16).

Happy adding!

Week 2- Session 1

Number Formation to 20

Hi,

I hope everybody had a lovely weekend and are ready to do some more home learning. Today we are going to focus on number formation to 20. Children in year one often confuse how to say and how to write numbers from 11-20. it would be really useful if you say each number in turn , emphasising the end sound e.g. Thirteen and ask your child to copy what you say. If the number is said incorrectly e.g. thirty instead of thirteen ask your child to say it again correctly. have a go at singing these songs to help you remember how to say them and how to write them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsAmz08nBV4

Wellbeing challenge number 2

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 11:44am

Today's challenge is to draw your own sunshine then in the middle of it write or draw all the things that make you happy.

I've done one if you would like to look at it for ideas (although your drawings may be a little better than mine! laugh) and have focused on all the things I can still do or see, even while we're in this strange situation smiley.

Stay safe everyone,

Mrs Glover

Happy Monday! Phonics and literacy

Date: 29th Mar 2020 @ 7:26pm

Good Morning everyone! Can you believe it's week 2 of our home learning! Well done everyone for all of your hard work last week! We hope you also took some time to enjoy the lovely sunshine!

Don't forget that Joe Wicks is doing a P.E lesson to wake up our brains and bodies every morning at 9am (It's definitly helped me wake up!). I have been trying to get us a shout out most mornings so keep watching and keep your fingers crossed, he might just mention us!

https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html

Sentence of the day

This week we are going to do our sentence of the day a little differently.

Here's the challenge...

Everyday I will give you a sentence, it will have no mistakes but it will be a little boring. I want you to make the sentences much more exciting! They will need WOW words (adjectives) and maybe even some connectives (and, but, because). When you have made my sentence better I want you to take a picture and email it to y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk and I will put as many pictures as I can on to the next days blog.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phonics

Todays phonics focuses on the ai vowel family - ay, ai, a-e

In your homelearning pack you have lots of words with these sounds in them and some worksheets to go with them. These are just a starting point- be creative, invent your own games. Here are a few good ones I've seen online -

phonics shoot - read a word and try and score a goal

Phonics splat - find the words and splat them

Phonics hunt - grown up says a word you need to find it in the time limit

I wonder if anyone can create their own phonics games and send them on to me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPAG

Todays SPAG focuses on adding the suffix -ing to words. In your homelearning packs you have a worksheet to go with this, but like with the other learning this week let's remember to get active, moving around keeps your brains healthy and will stop you becoming bored (save the worksheets for then!)

Look at the different root words in your pack, what will they become when you add -ing?

Play a game of simon says can you do the actions and say the new word?

Simon says jump - I am jumping

Simon says skip - I am skipping

Can you write the sentences to match what you did?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dont forget to take some pictures of all the fun activities you're doing and send them to y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk we'd love to see your smiling faces ! Also if you have any questions please email us !

Here are our stars of the week this week! Well done boys, it's lovely to see you so busy with smiles on your faces and learning in the garden!

See you again tomorrow for some more home learning!

Health and wellbeing challenges from Mrs Glover

Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 2:59pm

Hello, Mrs Glover here!

I hope everyone is staying safe, having fun and working hard on your learning. I'm going to post a Health and Wellbeing Challenge every day for people to do if they choose to. I'll be doing them all too and posting pictures where I can. Please feel free to e-mail any pictures or comments to your home learning e-mail addresses!

Challenge number 1: Go on a mindfulness walk. Write or draw 5 things that you can see, hear, feel, smell or touch (make sure you have an adult with you if necessary and stay far way from people you may see when you're out, although you can still say a friendly hello!) You could even do this in your garden if you have one!

Here's a picture of my mindfulness walk that I went on at lunch time today!

I saw trees and water, I heard birds and rustling, I could smell different plants and I could feel the sun on my face :-)

Friday's maths

Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 8:13am

Friday 27th March 2020

Session 5- Partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and 1's

In school we teach children to use concrete objects, numbers lines, and fingers to help them add and subtract. Alongside this we also teach them to look at numbers or quantities and work out the different ways that they can be split into 2 groups. We do this so that children can quickly worki out maths problems that involve  numbers by splitting them into smaller units so they're easier to work with. Younger children quickly learn these facts and use them to quickly solve problem.

We use equipment such as numicon pieces, base tens frames and diennes to help children to understand how to split the numbers. into tens and 1's.Take a look at this video it shows you how to partition numbers using diennes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJOK5uwJ_Xw

We can do the same with numicon pieces.

Using Numicon to learn about tens and units, this is combined with ...

Have a go at working through the activities and then if you feel  confident at partitioning and fancy a challenge then play this game.

maths session 4

Focus: Subtraction with concrete objects, using a number line and subtraction problems

What does subtraction mean? Watch this video to help you remember.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z2xpvcw

The children haave been subtracting amounts using objects in class and know that when they take away/subtract they physically remove objects that can be moved and the amount will get smaller. Sometimes they forget what to do when the objects they are subtracting cannot be moved and sometimes become confused.

In school we teach them to either cross out the amount that is being subtracted or cover the amount with their hand. The amount that is not covered ot crossed out is the amount that is left.

            Subtraction using concrete objects

Sutraction using a number line

Remember to count back from the bigger number!

Hope you find this useful!

Friday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 11:20am

Good Morning Everyone!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExaaIsrGm6U

It's Friday! I hope you've had a lovely week of home learning!

Sentence of the day

Here is the last sentence of the day for this week! Can you spot all of the mistakes and write the new sentence down?

sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on our vowel families - a,e,i,o,u

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEbaEXf6BqM

Today we are just focusing on the ay and the ea family...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-uLFJp5ZtI - ay family

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqgkdWrSPTc - ee family

There are lots of ways to make the same sound. In the childrens home learning packs there are worksheets to support you with these sounds. You could also play games of I spy and ask the children to try the alternative spellings and find out which spelling is the correct one for the object. There are also some word card in your packs, encourage the children to read these words - this doesn't have to be a sit down activity though, get moving! The children could play hide and seek the words, relay races whilst reading the words or musical bumps - read a word when the music stops.

English writing

In school the children have been reading the book Naughty Bus. They have started to make their own buses and have thought of different Naughty things that the Bus might do! Here is a link to the story so that you can listen again!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJlLXoaglow&t=136s

For their writing activity we would like the children to write the story of the Naughty Bus. They can create their own little book and even make a Naughty Bus to go with it. It is important that the children are encouraged to use their phonics, capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and adjectives to make their writing interesting. We look forward to sharing the stories when we return back to school!

We hope you've had a good week of home learning. Now it's time to celebrate all that you have done!

sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on tricky words and today we are looking at phase three tricky words. Some children know how to spell these words and are quite confident, however, they forget to use the correct spelling when writing sentences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R087lYrRpgY

Here is a song to help the children to remember the tricky words - Be warned it will be stuck in your heads all day smiley

Use this video and the activity book in your folders as a starting point to help the children remember how to spell the tricky words. Try and get creative with the children with remembering the tricky words, making pictures and posters and using playdough, pasta and chalks to spell out the words are some fun and rememberable ways to help the children to remember the spellings.

Reading

Todays reading focuses on those tricky words! Here is another video just in case the children need another reminder of those words...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri4u0TjAZ38

In your packs there is a tricky word spotter story. The children need to read the story and find all of the tricky words. Alternativley you could read another story and see how many of the tricky words you can find in that.

Dont forget to take some pictures of all the fun activities you're doing and send them to y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk we'd love to see your smiling faces ! Also if you have any questions please email us !

See you again tomorrow for some more home learning!

Wednesday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 10:29am

Good Morning!

I hope you are all enjoying your home learning so far!

Here's a little something to wake you all up this morning...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9q4U2P3ig

Sentence of the day

I hope you have been enjoying your sentences of the day - I am sorry about my croaky voice!

Sentence of the day

Phonics

Todays phonics focus is split digraphs. You will be looking at the a-e and the e-e split digrpahs today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkycxr-joDk - a-e

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFuETDoqVnA e-e

Use these videos as a starting point and play some games with the children. You may want to collect some items in your house and ask the children to sort them into things that have an a-e split digraph and things that have an e-e split digraph. If I spy was a hit the other day you might want to play that again. There are a-e and e-e words in your home learning packs for the children to practice reading. You may want to cut these up and place them around the house and ask the children to go on a treasure hunt for them all.

English writing - with a phonics link

The focus for todays writing is linked to the trigraph phonics that you did on Monday. The children can re watch the Geraldine the Giraffe videos to remind them of the different sounds. In your packs you have some pictures and word cards with words containing the four trigraphs on them - air, ear, ure, igh. The children can use the cards to make their own silly stories, poems or sentences.

Wishing you all a lovely Wednesday :)

Good morning Year One!

Let's wake up and shake up our brains this morning...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gUbdNbu6ak

Sentence of the day

Every day we will be posting a sentence of the day. The children will need to read the sentence themselves and find the corrections. They can write their corrected sentence into their special notebooks that are in the home learning packs. The following day we will post the corrected sentence so don't forget to check back in so that you can get the answers. The sentences will link with the phonics learning for that day.

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on the common exception words that children need to learn in year one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bc83J6AFfI

In your home learning packs you have a common exception words workbook. Use this book as a start point that the children can work through in the next few weeks to remember their common exception words. Most of the children love games like bingo to remember these words !

Reading Comprehension

The children have a reading comprehension in their home learning pack. Support them to work through this using their phonics to read any unfamiliar words.

Don't forget to carry on reading books for pleasure at this time too!

Monday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:41am

Good morning Year One!

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are up and ready to learn! Don't forget that Joe Wicks is doing a P.E lesson to wake up our brains and bodies every morning at 9am.

https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html

Sentence of the day

Every day we will be posting a sentence of the day. The children will need to read the sentence themselves and find the corrections. They can write their corrected sentence into their special notebooks that are in the home learning packs. The following day we will post the corrected sentence so don't forget to check back in so that you can get the answers. The sentences will link with the phonics learning for that day.

Sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on trigraphs (three letters that make one sound). The trigraphs are air, ear, ure and igh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcHIX2xK--A - air

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCR2RZ4ZYY - igh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwCzf71flBA - ure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EneZ1UubxSA - ear

Use these videos as a starting point to help the children remember the sounds. Once the children have watched the video encourage them to play a game of I spy just like Geraldine. The children can find items with the different sounds in. The children can then write labels for the items using their phonics knowledge to spell the words correctly. Once you have finished these activities there are some worksheets to match the learning in week one phonics in the home learning packs.

SPAG

The focus of todays SPAG is adding the suffix -ed to a word to make it past tense. There is a worksheet in the home learning packs to support this and children can change the words from present to past tense by adding ed. The children can then write their own silly sentences using these words.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxl28KQOHy4

Hope you enjoy your home learning!

An Eggsellent Friday!

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 8:43am

On Friday Year 1 had an Easter Eggstravanganza!

The children made a yummy rice krispie cake each.

They waited all afternoon to eat it!

Which made them taste even better when they did!

Then the children found out that the Easter Bunny had been into school! They searched high and low for Easter eggs!

Until at last everybody found one!

Message from the teacher

Date: 22nd Mar 2020 @ 12:27pm

Today has been a tricky day! We have had alot of worried adults and children who are feeling very sad about the school closure. I just want to say a big thank you to the wonderful families who  have been so supportive and caring in such uncertain times.I have sent a letter to all the childrenn to help explain why they are not coming into school and tell them about their learning packs. Please take care of yourselves and I hope to see you soon.

Manchester Airport

Date: 17th Mar 2020 @ 6:07am

The children had a fantastic time visiting the airport. They watched the planes take off and land and 'had a go' at sketching the planes that they could see. They were very lucky because they got to see the Emirates A380 plane land. The children were given a tour around the visitors park and got to touch, go inside and visit the cockpit of a plane. They were given the opportunity to 'dress up' in role as pilots, firefighters, police officers and flight attendants and act out the roles of the diffferent people who work at the airport. They got to look at and stand next to Concorde and found out lots of information about the plane. The children really enjoyed the trip and have asked to go back. If you would like to visit the visitors park with your family then you can find out more information about it  if you follow this link. https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/at-the-airport/attractions/ . They do have an Easter Egg hunt and Flight Cadet Academy planned for the Easter holidays!

Rock stars times tables practice

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 8:19pm

This week the children have been learning the 2,5,and 10' times tables. They enjoyed dressing up as TT rockstars and singing lots of diffferent songs to help them remember their number facts.

They enjoyed singing songs and playing games!

if you would like to have a go and  sing songs at home click on thiis link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nW00H6YWAc

Wonderful Weighing !

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 8:09pm

This week the children have been using the balance scales to weigh objects. They have been using comparitive language e.g. heavier, heaviest, lighter and lightest to compare the weight of objects. Then the children weighed different objects and used non-standard measures e.g. cubes to find out how many cubes each object weighed.

The children then recorded their work using pictures and symbols. They enjoyed estimating how many cubes each object weighed.
