Year 6DL 2023 - 2024

Welcome to 6DL!

Mr Leverton, Mrs Ranyard, Miss Fish and Miss Coulson.

Please read our class blog to keep updated with events and to see what the children have been learning.

‘Every Day Matters’

Every day that they are not in school can lead to gaps in their learning.

We also start lessons as soon as the register has been completed, so it is really important that your child is on time for school.

Children are able to come into the classroom from 8:45am and learning starts at 8:50am.

If your child is ill or has an appointment, please let the school office know as soon as possible.

What will my child learn in Year 6?

Our key texts this year are:

  • Goodnight Mr Tom
  • Non-fiction texts about WW2
  • Anne Frank’s Diary
  • Once
  • Holes
  • Kensuke’s Kingdom
  • Floodland
  • Dolphin Boy
  • Island
  • The Boy at the Back of the Class

We will be working hard on helping your child spell with increasing accuracy. These two lists below show you the words that the children must know how to spell by the end of Year 6, as set out by the government. These spellings, along with other spellings which follow the taught spelling patterns in Year 6, will be sent home as part of homework.

Spelling practise at home:

  • Say and spell the words out loud
  • Look, cover, write, check
  • Spelling pyramid, e.g. S, S-P, S-P-E, S-P-E-L, S-P-E-L-L
  • Sounding out the words
  • Visualisation of the word
  • Rainbow writing (writing words repeatedly in different colours)
  • Mnemonics, e.g. because = big elephants can’t always use small exits
  • Word searches
  • Write sentences using weekly spelling words correctly

Being fluent in mental maths is a big focus for us as a school this year. It’s really important that your child regularly practises their multiplication tables up to 12x12, and can add and subtract numbers mentally. We will be working hard to support your child to do this in school – your support at home in helping them practise is really important!

Year 6 Maths Coverage

Times Tables

It is very important that your child practises their times tables at home. Each child has their own login for TT Rockstars where they can complete challenges and competitions.

P.E Days

- Monday

Outdoor – Friday

Daily Mile- Wednesday (No PE kit needed)

Children are to come into school wearing their PE kit on their PE days

pe kit.png

For INDOOR P.E. children should wear black shorts or leggings and a white t-shirt.

For OUTDOOR P.E children should wear black shorts, leggings or tracksuit and a white t-shirt. They must wear footwear that is suitable for running and jumping in, trainers are ideal.

The children will unfortunately not be allowed to take part in the lesson if they are not wearing the correct clothing for the PE sessions.

We have a strict no jewellery policy and the children will be asked to remove any jewellery before the PE lesson starts and this includes earrings.

Children will also run the daily mile once a week.

Homework will be set on a Thursday and checked every Monday. Children will have a maths activity to complete, a reading comprehension and a Grammar task and a list of spellings that they need to learn. The homework will be set every week and the children will be given a plastic folder to put it in. This should be kept in their book bag.

Next week, all children will be given a reading book that is suitable for their reading level as well as a reading record. We expect that children read every day at home for 15-20 minutes, ideally with an adult or older sibling. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag, with reading book and signed reading record in it, to school every day to be checked in class.

Questions you can ask to help your child’s reading:

  • Why do you think the book has this title?
  • How is the character feeling at the beginning, middle and end of the book?
  • How do you know?
  • Have you read a book like this before? Does it remind you of anything you have experienced?
