Sentences of the Day

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 11:34am

Good morning year 6, I am mixing things up again today and we are going to look at two short paragraphs. The type of text is an information text about the effects of climate change and the increase in droughts. I have pinked all the good features for you to see and written little codes around them. See if you can find them all. I have also highlighted spelling errors in green for you to correct.

What is the link between climate change and drought?

Sub   While droughts can have different causes depending on the area of the world and other natural factors,C the majority of scientists have started to link more V intense droughts to climate change. This is because as more greenhouse gas emissions are relesed into the air, causing air temperatures to increase, more moisture evaporates from land and lakes, rivers and other bodies of water.List  Warmer temperatures also increase evaporation in plant soils, which effects plant life and can reduce rainfall even more. When rainfall does sub come to H drought-stricken areas, the drier soils it hits are less able to absorb the water, increasing the likelyhood of flooding.

What are some of the major impacts of drought?

                    v

It goes without saying droughts can be detrimental to the enviroment

but conj droughts also have serious consequences for peoples livelihoods, affecting everything from agriculture and water supply to transportasion and health.

Now have a go at writing your own paragraph about droughts and how climate change is increasing the risk of more serious problems on our world.  There are lots of facts online so have a google and see what you can find.

Wellbeing challenge number 6

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Happy Friday everyone and well done for learning at home for 2 whole weeks! As strange as I've found it not being at school, the time has flown by for me so I hope it feels the same for you.

I'm going to do one final wellbeing challenge for today and then take a break for the next 2 weeks for the Easter holiday. However, check back on Monday morning as over the weekend I am going to set you a little wellbeing project in case anyone wants an Easter challenge.

Since it's the end of the week, today's challenge is to relax and get ready for the weekend so I want everyone to do a guided meditation. This is when you close your eyes and listen to a lovely soothing voice transport you to somewhere new. They are great for helping you to sleep or if you just want to relax at the end of your learning.

There are plenty available on Youtube, here are a few of my favourites:

Secret treehouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWOHcGF1Tmc

Spaceship to the moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV9BBR1RoGg

Hot air balloon ride - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv6Y1tq1sQ

Have a great Easter holiday and don't forget to check back for the challenge next week if you think you'd like to do it. I'll be back with a daily challenge from Monday the 20th of April if we're still at home then.

Past challenges

Thank you to Mrs Ganner for sending me a photo of her daughter completing the baking challenge from earlier in the week, it looks amazing and has made me want to bake something chocolately myself this weekend! I think I might make some brownies as a treat for my husband!

Activities for parents over Easter :)

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:31am

Hi Parents and Carers at home with a member of 3RH,

I hope you are all doing well. I saw a post the other day about cherishing this time. We may never get this time again and the children will look back and remember that time they got to stay at home with their adults and have fun for weeks and weeks on end. I know everyone will be staying home a lot more than might be usual for school holidays so with that in mind, here are a selection of 10 activities that you might enjoy over the holiday. If you do any of them, I would love to see photos! Please send whatever you can to yr3homelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk - Thank you to all who have sent pictures already! I love to see what you are all doing. Here we go:

1. Depending on what you have around the house, or whether you are already buying food for your pets, you could make some egg-shaped bird seed feeders. There are lots of instructions online. Here’s one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP0dn4mLCuQ

2. Decorate some eggs. You might have some plastic or polystyrene eggs already, or you could learn how to blow eggs! There are lots of ways you could decorate your eggs: pens, paints, paper mache, Use what you already have at home or look online for more ideas.

3. Set up an Easter Egg hunt in your garden or house. If you don’t have chocolate eggs, you could create a treasure hunt using a selection of toys. Perhaps get the children to draw a map of your garden or house and then you mark on all of the different places where you hide your eggs – then get them to go hunting!

4. Do some Easter-themed artwork. Here is a step by step tutorial on drawing the Easter bunny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QQJ6mMWoFY  - This one shows you how to draw an Easter Egg folding surprise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDl3PXioJ1s

5. Play some family Easter games. You could set up an Easter bunny balloon hop, play Easter charades or make Easter-themed wordsearches for each other to solve (check your spelling!). If you are feeling brave, play egg catch in the garden! You could use a hard boiled egg to avoid making too much mess!

6.  Set up an Easter Egg and Spoon Obstacle Course in your home or in the garden. Use whatever you have to create the course – maybe you have some sports equipment or you could race up and down the stairs. Now time everyone to complete the course whilst balancing an egg (or a potato) on a spoon!

7. Get crafting! There are so many creative things you could do: make some Easter bunny ears, make maracas out of plastic eggs, make an Easter bunny mask from a paper plate, create a mosaic from broken egg shells. You’ll find these, and lots more ideas here https://www.family education.com/fun/easter-activities-crafts/10-cute-easter-crafts-kids

8. Do some fingerprint painting. This video shows you how to turn 14 finger prints into different pictures.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxfHNwgy25o - For something a bit more realistic, this one shows you how to paint flowers using different finger painting techniques. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT3bCPNj45Y

9. Make a rubbery egg! This science investigation takes patience but it is really fascinating. You just need an egg, some vinegar and the ability to wait for a week. If you have all that, you can remove the shell of an egg so that just the inside remains. Find out how to do (and the clever science behind it) here stevespangler science.com/lab/experiments/naked-egg-experiment/

10. If we are allowed to still go out for a walk, head out for some fresh air with your family. Remember the social distancing rules and don’t go with anyone who doesn’t live in your home. As you walk, look around for the signs of spring. Can you see flowers? Are the buds appearing on the trees? What animals can you spot – both big and small? If we can only go in to the garden, you could hold a Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Get the children to help out in the kitchen to make a selection of sandwiches and a selection of other bite-size treats. Then gather your family, teddies (and other soft toys) and a blanket and head out to the garden to enjoy your picnic lunch together.

Also saw this idea on Facebook which might be a nice way to make a memory.

I hope that helps with some ideas to keep the children busy and excited about Easter. Again, remember to send work or activities the children have been doing to yr3homelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk. I honestly love to see what they are all up to.

I want you to know that even though I am at home and the children are not all in school, I am thinking about them and your families during this strange and uncertain time. I am extremely proud of all of the progression your children have made this year so far and can't wait to get back into the classroom with them - I hope that is sooner rather than later! If you have any questions at all about advice for work or general enquiry about any work or activity you can do, please don't hesitate to contact yr3homelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk. It may be a strange time for the children but I can appreciate that this is a strange time for adults at home too! So a huge thank you from me for all of the effort you are putting in to continuing to support the childrens learning outside of school.

Thanks again for reading this blog. I hope you have a lovely Easter next weekend and enjoy this week and the extra time with the children that we have been given. You are all doing a fantastic job! Take care, stay safe and stay in touch! I will continue to post blogs as usual so keep an eye on our class page.

Speak soon,

Miss Humphreys :)

Top tips for the Easter holiday

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:28am

Well done everyone, we've made it to Friday! Tomorrow it's the weekend and then after that it's our 2 week Easter Holiday! I know it feels a bit strange to have a holiday when you've already been off for a few weeks but it's important that you take a break from your learning, especially if you've been working really hard! We won't be posting a daily top tip (although we may do the odd update about what we're doing over the holidays and you can still get in touch on your home learning e-mail addresses to tell us what you're up to!) but here are some tips to make the most of your holiday:

enlightenedTop tip for the holidays: Try and do one of each of these activities a day

1. Do something active. This could be a Joe Wicks workout, a dance, a yoga session (look at my wellbeing post from yesterday for ideas) or even just a walk.

2. Do something creative. Draw a picture, make something or do some cooking or baking. You could even make something Easter themed like a card, basket or hat.

3. Do something relaxing. Watch a film, read a book, do some colouring or listen to some music.

4. Do something nice for someone else. Give someone a compliment, make someone a drink or some food, help with a job around the house or tidy your room before your grown up asks you to!

5. Tell someone a joke. The bad jokes are even better than the good jokes and they can cheer both people up and make them smile!

Happy Easter and have a good holiday. We'll be back to posting something every day from Monday 20th April if we're still all at home.

Mrs Glover and Mrs Harriott

It's Friday! Phonics and sentence of the day

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 9:41am

Good Morning! It's our last day of our home learning blog before the Easter holidays!

Don't worry grown ups I will be posting some fun activities that you can be doing over the holidays just in case you need a few ideas :)

In case your legs are aching(I know mine are!) and you can't quite manage the full Joe Wicks workout, here's a quick 5 minute move for you...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3LPrhI0v-w

Sentence of the day

With is being almost Easter here's an Easter themed sentence of the day for you. The Easter Bunny has stolen all of the interesting words in this sentence and he's hidden them inside his Easter eggs! Can you guess which words are winning? There will be a special shout out to anyone who manages to figure out the words!

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on our vowel families - a,e,i,o,u

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEbaEXf6BqM

Today we are just focusing on the igh and the oa family...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U60sOQxbO4I - igh family

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZHn2UhrLZM - oa family

There are lots of ways to make the same sound. In the childrens home learning packs there are worksheets to support you with these sounds. You could also play games of I spy and ask the children to try the alternative spellings and find out which spelling is the correct one for the object. There are also some word card in your packs, encourage the children to read these words - this doesn't have to be a sit down activity though, get moving! The children could play hide and seek the words, relay races whilst reading the words or musical bumps - read a word when the music stops.

English writing

Last week you wrote the story of the Naughty Bus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJlLXoaglow&t=136s

Hopefully this week you have made your own special transport using the wheels and axles, if not nows your chance!

Your writing challenge today is to plan your own story all about the things that your transport gets up to. It could be a Naughty truck or even a kind car or a brave bus. It's up to you, be inventive!

In your packs you have your own story mountain, your challenge is to think about what happens in the beginning, problem, resolution and ending of your story. You don't need to write your whole story just notes so that after the Easter holidays you can write your story.

Some of you might want to plan your story by telling it to your grown ups. You could film this on your ipad and send it into y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk so that everyone can see your amazing ideas!

We hope you've had a great past two weeks of home learning. Now it's time to celebrate all that you have done!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2NZg6Sr9qo

Hope you all have a lovely Easter Breaklaugh

Friday Challenges!

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 7:35pm

Good Morning Reception,

I can't believe it's Friday in our second week of home learning. Has it already been two weeks since we left school...?surprise

If it's Friday then that only means it's Challenge Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today we would like you to choose some activities of your choice from the Activity sheet which is attached to this blog. You may choose 1, 2, 3 or more. We would like you to complete your activity inside or outside your house using the resources around you. What will you choose?

My son Adam was my helper today and he decided to choose three of the activities on the list. He chose:

Activity 1 - He wrote numbers on some pieces of card and made a number line on our washing line in the garden. We played some games with the washing line numbers:

Missing number - He closed his eyes and I took a number away. He had to guess which number was missing. It got trickier when I took away 3 or four numbers.

Squirt the number - Use a water gun or nerf style gun to hit the target number.

Activity 8 - Adam used the toys in his bedroom to make the letters of his name. What can you use in your house to do this activity?

Activity 10 - Adam found some crayons and practised writing his tricky words, numbers and letters outside in our back garden on the paving stones.

We can't wait to see which ones you will do!!!!

Don't forget to send in your videos/photos to our email receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk
