Our Learning

Date: 19th Nov 2021 @ 6:46pm

Hello everyone!

We have had another lovely week in Nursery! This week the 'Ravensbury Campsite' opened and the children have loved this imaginary role play area. They have sat around the fire, sang songs and toasted marshmallows!

The children have been learning all about the number 3 this week and have especially enjoyed racing in our outdoor area to see who will come 1st, 2nd, and 3rd!

All of the children have enjoyed joingin in with action rhymes and songs such as 'incy wincy spider' and 'wind the bobbin up'.

This week we have been reading the story 'Tidy' which is all about a badger who tidied up the forest but realises he has made it too tidy! Children have been given outstanding stickers for being extra helpful at tidy up time.

We're all looking forward to seeing you all next week, enjoy your weekend!

Children in Need

Date: 19th Nov 2021 @ 4:46pm

Today we helped raise money for Children in Need.

We began the day by exploring what Children in Need is, and why/how they raise money. We then took part in a PSHE lesson, which explored how Children in Need can help us, and lead into a discussion about our own personal heroes.

Our favourite part of the day, was joining in with Joe Wicks' P.E lesson and Quiz - we did a super job of answering the questions correctly and showing off our P.E moves!

Maths Week!

Date: 19th Nov 2021 @ 4:36pm

Last week, 4CB celebrated maths week! We read a new story (gifted to us by the wonderful Mrs Ranyard!) called '365 penguins.' We didn't realise it at first, but the story took us on a journey of a full year (365 days). We were then able to explore months of the year, and created our own rhymes to help us remember how many days each month has.

This week, we have extended our maths learning even further, by exploding times tables! We drew arrays, wrote number sentences and considered what the multiplication really meant (e.g. 2 x 3 = 2 lots of 3). It has really helped us with our times tables learning, especially since we have been focusing on multiplication this week.

Well done 4CB!

Maths Week!

Date: 18th Nov 2021 @ 9:06am

Last week was our maths week at Ravensbury. We celebrated maths in lots of different ways including competing to be the TT Rockstar Stars! We are yet to find out who the winners are but we can not wait!

Each year group was also given a maths related book to enjoy together. Ours was called If by David J Smith. It had lots of interesting information about the world, presented in ratio and percentages. We especially enjoyed discovering how many new inventions have occured in the last 100 years!

Our shopping trip

Date: 17th Nov 2021 @ 4:46pm

Today we got our shopping lists, our walking shoes and our shopping bags and walked to Asda. We looked down the aisles for all of the things on our lists and ticked them off once we had found them. Once we had finished our shopping we paid using the self checkouts, packed our bags and made the short walk back to school.
We had the best time and were all so sensible and safe walking to and from school.

we can't wait for tomorrow when we make our cupcakes and sandwiches and prepare for our tiger tea party!

Subject verb agreement fun!

Date: 17th Nov 2021 @ 8:19am

We have been practising the tricky skill of making the verb agree with the subject of our sentences by playing games. We used all of our teamwork skills to choose the corrrect from of the verb.

Talking Top Tips #3!

Date: 15th Nov 2021 @ 4:12pm

Hello all! This is the third installment of our Talking Top Tips blog series. So far we have shared the importance of getting your child’s attention before you speak to them and some ways you can help to develop and broaden your child’s vocabulary.

Today’s ‘Top Tip’ is all about questions.

How many bricks are in your tower? What have you drawn? You like to ride the bike, don’t you? What would happen if we added blue powder to the paint? Are you ok? Do you need a snack?

Both at home and at school children are asked an awful lot of questions! Questions can put children on the defensive and often lead to your child saying or doing less, rather than more. Before diving into questioning, it is important to OWL. This means to observe what your child is doing, wait to see what it is they are interested in and if they initiate a conversation with you through either talking, gesture or by looking at you and listening rather than thinking about what it is you are going to say next. I find waiting to be the most difficult part of ‘owling’!

Once your child has given you a cue to start a conversation (by looking at you or perhaps by showing you a toy), try to simply comment rather than question. If your child holds up a toy tractor, rather than asking ‘What do you have there?’, try ‘Oh look, you have the red tractor!’ Instead of ‘Do you like your juice?’, try ‘Wow! That juice looks delicious!’ Instead of ‘What is that? Is it a bus?’ try ‘That bus looks like it has a lot of passengers today!’

Research indicates that the best way to support young children’s language development is to make 4 comments to every 1 question you ask. This means we need to think really carefully about which questions are important! Try to use questions that match you child’s interests, questions that they would want to answer. It is also worth thinking about questions which require a longer response. For example, asking ‘How are you feeling?’ instead of ‘Are you ok?’ or ‘What can you hear outside?’ over ‘Did you hear the police car?’ There is more information about questions if you are interested to find out more at https://www.famly.co/blog/open-ended-questions-early-years

Have a go this week at commenting rather than questioning when you are talking with your child! As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please get in touch.

Library Visit

Date: 15th Nov 2021 @ 8:48am

Hello

Year 2 have had a fun week this week! They have been  visiting the school  library and class library regularly to have a go at choosing a book to read for pleasure. The non fiction books have been very popular, especially books about ' The Great Fire of London'. Why don't you ask your child about a book that they haave read or would like to read next time they visit. Take a look at the pictures below

Topic 2 Launch!

Date: 13th Nov 2021 @ 9:06pm

Launch Houses.JPGThis half term our topic is called 'Could the three little pigs use a better material to build their houses?' To launch this theme this week we had a building challenge. We had to work in teams and test out our learning powers to build a house that would be stable. We used cardboard boxes, paper, straws, lolly pop sticks and lots of selotape and masking tape to create our buildings. They was lots of collaboration, talking, team building and decision making. At times it became challenging but the teams persevered and each each one made a house that stood up and had a roof!

Well done 1AI!!!

CAUTION: Children at Work

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 5:36pm

What a week!

We kicked off this week with our launch day. The children worked in teams to build their own houses from junk. They talked about how they could make their houses better than the three little pigs and use some collage materials to decorate their houses. Some of the children even added some security systems to keep any big bad wolves away!

In english the children have done some amazing writing and (as always) I am so proud of the way they are working. I am looking forward to seeing them make even more progress.

Next week in maths we will be looking at subtraction even further. This was introduced to the children this week but we will be going into more depth next week as we learn to use the concrete resources in class and count back on our numberlines.

Thank you as always for your continued support, if you ever have any questions or want to have a chat then please email y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk I am always happy to help with anything you may need.

Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday!

Bonfire night!

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 4:34pm

Remember remember the 5th November...

On Friday we celebrated all things firework.

We looked at the shapes and noises that fireworks make in the sky and we made our very own firework pictures.

We loved watching videos of people making shapes in the dark with sparklers so we decided to make our very own sparklers and take them outside for a special Ravensbury Bonfire. We made a bonfire and did a special bonfire dance with our sparklers.

We had such a fun day learning about Bonfire night and looking at all of the bright colours that light up the dark night.

Pe/photo day 12/11/21

Date: 8th Nov 2021 @ 4:29pm

On Friday 12th November the children will be having individual and sibling photographs. Please ensure that your child is dressed in their normal school uniform and NOT PE clothes. We will still be doing PE this Friday, however, it will be in normal school clothes to allow school photos to be taken.

Many thanks,

The Reception team

Welcome Back Everyone!!

The children have come back raring to get on with their learning and have also grown a little taller!

During this term we will be answering our topic question 'Could the three little pigs use better materials to build their houses?' We will be using the texts 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'Stickman' to support our learning in English. In our Connected Curriculum lessons we will be looking at materials and their properties in science and use design and technology skills to build and design objects. Attached are the parent overview and knowledge organisers for this half term's learning.

Outstanding!!!

Date: 7th Nov 2021 @ 3:56pm

Outstanding.JPG  I am delighted to say that all of our amazing children made it to "Outstanding" this week. They worked incredibly hard to show outstanding listening, work and friendship. I can't wait for another brilliant week of learning!

Amazing Arrays!

Date: 6th Nov 2021 @ 6:47pm

This week, year 4 have begun to explore all things multiplication!

We used multilink cubes to create arrays, before exploring the number sentences that they represented. We then used our times tables facts to help us.

Can you practice any more number sentences at home?

For example:

3 x 4 = 12

4 x 3 = 12

12 ÷ 3 = 4

12 ÷ 4 = 3

Column Addition

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 7:10pm

In maths this week, we have been learning to use the column method for addition. Use this game, to help you practise at home.
