What objects can fly?

Date: 5th Jun 2025 @ 10:23am

Welcome to Summer 2 term! I can't believe this is the last half term before we break up for the Summer!!

We started the week with a discussion and presented our ideas to answer the question 'What objects can fly?' We discussed the question as a class and shared some ideas together and then children created some posters with labels/captions and pictures to share their own ideas. We presented our ideas in small groups to the rest of the class.

This work was getting us starting to think about our final history topic question 'How did we learn to fly?'

Flourishing in our learning!

Date: 4th Jun 2025 @ 11:41am

We have had a soaring start back in 2AH!

This week we have come back with a lot of energy and thriving to learn more! We have started our fractions unit in Maths where we began by recalling our learning of what 1/2 is and then starting to move on to 1/3. The children worked really well in pairs and independently to find 1/2 of objects, shapes and quantities. The children had fun halving food and using whiteboards to practice their skills.

We also finished our narrative writing piece all about Ratty's big adventure! The children had to innovate their own rainforest animal that Ratty meets on his adventure. The pupils have really enjoyed this topic, coming up with amazing adjectives to describe the rainforest creatures and nature. We were also really inspired by a discussion we had with Stuart the gardener who told us all about when he once lived in Sumatra and visited the rainforest. He spoke to the children about how the rainforest was and shown us some amazing pictures.

Article of the Week: Article 3

Date: 1st Jun 2025 @ 3:19pm

Article 3.pngArticle 3: All adults should do what's best for children.

We think it's important that everyone remembers, and learns about, Article 3. Article 3 states: When adults make decisions, they should think about how their decisions will affect children. All adults should do what is best for children.

This is something that is done frequently at Ravensbury, without us even realising it!

We asked our peers the question "Who makes decisions that affect you?" and they answered:

  • Parents/Carers
  • Teachers
  • Doctors
  • Government
  • Prime Minister
  • Family Members
  • Friends

But the truth is, everyone makes decisions that affect us - including ourselves!

One of the ways we keep ourselves safe at Ravensbury, is thinking about the adults we trust. You can do this by having a 'Trusted 5.' That means you hold up five fingers, and think of an adult you can go to if you or worried, upset or just need a chat - one adult for each finger.

Adults are duty bearers, that means they have a job in ensuring our rights are met. In our class charters, we talk about what the adults do in order to help us have all of our rights. You can see all of the class charters on everyones class pages, or on the doors to their classrooms.

Parts of a Tree!

Date: 1st Jun 2025 @ 7:37am

In science we have continued our learning all about plants. On the last Friday before the half term holidays we were learning about the parts of a tree. We discussed each part and its function. Then we went for a walk in the playground to look at some of the trees closely and name the different parts of a tree to a friend. In class we drew some detailed diagrams of a tree and labelled each part.

After the holidays we will finish our learning about plants and find out the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees and identify and name some of the trees.

Seas and Oceans of the UK!

Date: 31st May 2025 @ 7:53pm

This week as part of our "What can you find in the UK?" topic work we have been learning about the seas and oceans surrounding the UK. We have found out that the English Channel, the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean all surround the island of the UK. We have used maps to study the positions of the seas and oceans and we have found out some interesting facts such as how you can cross the English Channel by train through the Channel Tunnel!

In the photos, you can see us completing the lost sea scrolls challenge! We were given a map of the UK with the seas and oceans missing! We used a map of the school grounds to find the lost sea scrolls. Luckily we managed to find them all and could remember their names and where they are located on the map! It was so much fun!

Linkages and Levers

Date: 29th May 2025 @ 10:48pm

This half-term, year 3 had a design and technology project: to create a product that needed to include a linkage and lever. We completed this project over a couple of days.

This was a difficult task for year 3, as linkages and levers involved creating very small holes and connecting different strips of card together. We used the concept of Roman catapults as inspiration.

Even though there was a lot of trial and error, we were all proud of what we created. We can't wait for our next design and technology project next half-term...can you guess what it'll be? sandwhich.jpg

Van Goughs sunflowers

Date: 20th May 2025 @ 4:58pm

This week we have been learning all about the artist Van Gough. The children enjoyed looking at his art work and discussing how it made them feel and what they could see.
They then created their own Van Gough inspired sunflowers pictures.

Out of This World! How Far Are the Planets?

Date: 20th May 2025 @ 12:20pm

Last week Year 5 explored the distance of planets from the Sun by stepping out scaled distances on the playground. Each child represented a planet, standing a set number of steps apart to show how far the planets are from the Sun. It was a fun, hands-on space activity, although it was a long walk for Neptune!

Save the rainforests!

Date: 19th May 2025 @ 2:24pm

Hello!

We have been learning lots about the rainforest and how animals are in danger because the trees are being chopped down for palm oil! The children have now finished writing their amazing persuasive letters to save our rainforests. On Friday, we went to the letter box and posted our letters to our local MP Lucy Powell, we hope that she replies!

Katie in London

Date: 18th May 2025 @ 8:18pm

Last Monday we started our final text for this half term called Katie in London. The story is about a girl called Katie who gets shown all the wonderful landmarks around London by one of the lions in Trafalgar Square.

We started the writing unit by learning about the famous landmarks in London by creating them out of construction materials, doing some observation drawings of the landmarks, reading information books and writing some facts.

Isabelle did an amazing structure out paper of the Tower of London, which she has been adding to over the week. She said she will continue to add more details next week!

Parts of a Plant!

Date: 11th May 2025 @ 10:15pm

In science this week we were learning about the different parts of a plant and their functions. We read some information about each part of the plant. We used natural materials in the playground to create our own models of plants. Then we told our partners what each was and its function.

Flowers and Plants!

Date: 11th May 2025 @ 10:40am

In Science this week, we have been learning about plants! We have explored the two different types of flowers; garden plants and wild plants. We recapped the parts of the flower and then learnt about what the fuctions of the parts of the flowers are. We made a model of a flower including the parts and then explained to our friends what each part of the flower does to help it grow and survive.

VE Day!

Date: 9th May 2025 @ 1:40pm

Year 5 had a fabulous day celebrating VE Day. It was wonderful to see how interested they were and they asked great questions. They really enjoyed writing a diary entry from the perspective of someone who has enjoyed the celebrations in 1945 and their feelings knowing the war was finally over and we had snacks in the afternoon with VE Day crafts.

The children have also been very inquisitive while learning all about the Mars rover Curiosity in our reading and writing lessons this week and were amazed by watching the real life footage from the surface of Mars!

Article of the Week: Article 38

Date: 8th May 2025 @ 2:21pm

Article 38.pngArticle 38: Children have the right to be protected during war.

This week we have chosen to highlight Article 38, because we have celebrated the anniversary of VE day. During wars, children's mental and physical wellbeing are harmed by the dangerous conflicts surrounding them. This is why it is important that UNCRC protects children during war, and makes sure that no child under the age of 15 can participate in war.

VE Day Celebrations

Date: 8th May 2025 @ 1:53pm

Today, we have been learning about VE day for it's 80th Anniversary. We wore red, white and blue to school and ate a special VE day lunch.

In class, we learnt what Victory in Europe day is, and why it is important to remember these occasions. We also completed some different VE day crafts.

VE Day Celebrations

Date: 8th May 2025 @ 11:46am

Today we have celebrated VE Day by dressing up in red white and blue, creating mark making banners, looking at and talking about a remembrance banner, playing keep uppy and at lunchtime we listened to some old songs. We also danced to some boogie woogie music. Happy VE 80th Anniversary everybody!

Can anyone name that tune?

A Soaring Start!

Date: 7th May 2025 @ 11:04am

Hello!

We are now in our final term of year two and I cannot believe how fast the time has flown!  The children have had an amazing start to the summer term across all subjects. This half term has started with lots of new learning. Some of our learning so far has been starting to explore persuasive writing for writing a letter, identifying different coins and their values in maths and starting to discuss 'why do some animals live in cold places and others in hot?' in our geography learning.  Check out the photos below to see what we have been learning and exploring!

What can you find in the United Kingdom?

Date: 5th May 2025 @ 8:37pm

This week in our connected curriculum we have been learning about what you can find in the United Kingdom! So far we have found out that the UK is made up from 4 countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We have also discovered that the UK is an island which means that it is surrounded by seas and oceans! This week we have been learning what the four capital cities are for the four countries and what landmarks you might see there if you went to visit. We explored the capital cities; Belfast, London, Edinbourgh and Cardiff using the Chromebooks and Google Images. We have also looked at photos to do our own observational drawings.

Date: 2nd May 2025 @ 5:32pm

Of course they should!

Today, some Year 6 children shared their persuasive adverts telling Year 5 children all about the wonders of Ghyll Head and why they absolutely must go on the trip! We think some of the Year 5 children are already getting excited!

Simply Stunning!

Date: 2nd May 2025 @ 5:29pm

We started back last week planting sunflowers and finished this week creating our own representations of them. We have been chosing from a variety of diferent media which included cellophane, tissue paper, felt-tips and wax crayons. We're sure you'll agree that we are amazing artists and have our own creative ideas. The children took their sunflowers home today too. We hope they grow well. Have a lovely, sunny weekend.

Swinging into Cricket Fun!

Date: 1st May 2025 @ 4:52pm

Year 5 enjoyed an exciting cricket taster session led by a professional coach. Pupils practised batting, bowling, and fielding through fun games and drills. The session introduced key cricket skills and teamwork, sparking enthusiasm for the sport among the children. It was a fantastic introduction to cricket!

Article of the Week: Article 1

Date: 1st May 2025 @ 12:39pm

Article 1.jpg Article 1: A child is any person under the age of 18.

This week's article of the week is Article 1, which shows that everyone under the age of 18 has all of the rights in the Convention.

At Ravensbury, we ask the children to consider 'How do children get to enjoy their rights in the UK? What does the Government do to make this happen?'

When you hear of the answers, you can often be surprised by how much we do to support the rights of the child - as there are so many things that we do without even thinking about it.

Here are just some of those things:

  • Every child must be registered with a name at birth.
  • There are parks and play areas provided.
  • We have education and health care systems.
  • Some people's jobs is to protect children.
  • The school curriculum includes learning about the convention on the rights of the child.
  • Children are given protection when they need.
  • Schools have ways of listening to children's views and opinions.
  • There are Children's Commissioners whos job it is to make sure children are listened to.
  • Social care services and the police work to keep all children protected.
  • There are laws which include some rights from the Convention of the Rights of the Child, such as equalities legislation and the Children Act.

Can you think of any other things that we do?
