Year 5JB: Blog items

Wellbeing challenge number 11

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 11:16am

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and made the most of the lovely warm weather (I think it might be the last hot sun for a while although it seems nice so far this morning!)

Today's challenge is to do something that I have just discovered myself although my husband has been nagging me to do it for a while - Listen to a podcast.

A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can download to your tablet, phone or laptop and listen to either while you relax or while you go for a walk. Some include music, some are educational, some entertain you and some are just good for helping you relax. You can listen to them with others or by yourself if you need a bit of me time.

This weekend I have been listening to one called Sounds of the 90s by Fearne Cotton that includes lot of music from the 90s as well as intervews with 90s pop stars. I've been listening to it while I go on my hour long walks every day and I think some of the teachers may also enjoy it!

Here are some podcasts I've found that I think you might all like, the links are under each description:

But Why: A pocast for curious kids
A podcast answering lots of questions that you may find interesting!
http://digital.vpr.net/programs/why-podcast-curious-kids

Storytime

What if world
With wacky episode titles such as "What if Legos were alive?" and "What if sharks had legs?," this series takes ridiculous "what if" questions submitted by young listeners and turns them into a new story every two weeks.http://www.whatifworldpodcast.com/

Noodle Loaf
A delightful offering from a music education specialist and his co-host daughter will get kids of all ages singing, rhyming, moving, and engaging in all kinds of musical games. The segments, games, and songs are so silly and upbeat that the whole family will enjoy participating. Little listeners can even add their voice to the theme song in the podcast's electronically compiled kid's choir!

Mrs Glover

An exciting challenge!

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

As you may have seen on the school twitter, or website, the staff at Ravensbury have created a video of us all creating a heart with our hands. Doesn't it look amazing? I was so happy that I had just straightened my hair when Mrs Thewlis asked for a photo! It was very good timing.

Now it is your turn. Can you send a picture of yourself (or yourself with your family!) creating a heart with your hands? I've attached one of some of the year 5&6 team to give you some ideas (you may not recognise me with my hair down! I'm the middle one on the right hand side cheeky).

If we get enough photographs, Mrs Thewlis hopes to create a 'heart video' for each year group, or perhaps the entire school, so that we can see our friends again.

Please note, that the picture you send will be posted on the class blog and twitter page, so make sure that you are happy for it to go on there before you email us.

y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

I can't wait to see what you send us!

Miss Brookes

Weekly Reading Challenge

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 10:03am

Good morning everyone!

Last week's reading challenge was to read 3 books on reading plus! I am happy to announce that eleven of you managed to read at least 3 books, and 10 of you managed to score above 80% in all of your books! Well done!

This week, I am challenging you to read 5 books  - that's one book every day this week!

Good luck!

Miss Brookes

Monday 27th April

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 8:41am

Good morning everyone!

Did you have a lovely weekend? I hope you enjoyed the sunshine, we got the paddling pool out...although Livvi and Asaph sneaked the bubble bath outside and before we knew it, bubbles were everywhere (they used almost a whole bottle!!). I've checked the weather forecast and it's definitely turning chillier this week, with some rain forecast, so Miss Brookes will be happy!

Remember to email us today to show us your learning, we'd love to see!

Hello from Mrs Hodges!

Before we get into our Sentence of the Day, I'd like you to watch this clip of Chris Hadfield making a sandwich on board the International Space Station:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vio09T-8qA

I never get tired of watching these videos, I'm just in awe of the way scientists have developed ways to live in space!

Here's our sentence for today - I'd love to see your corrected sentence before I post my purple pen video later this afternoon!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Swi6yyu

Good afternoon Year 5!

How did you get on with today's sentence? Here's my corrected version for you to compare to yours!

Hello from Miss Wendt!

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend, I spent most of my weekend reading in my back garden, pretty perfect really! Even though I know Miss Brookes is looking forward to the rain, I am 100% a fan of the sunshine! It's my birthday tomorrow and even though it's going to be very different from what I had originally planned, I'm really looking forward to it. Katy is making my favourite dessert (I'll show you a picture tomorrow!) and I have a stack of lovely new books to read!

Anyway, on with today's maths! I've got 2 tasks today, a fluent in five and then a problem solving activity. I will post the answers later!

An update with the answers!

Well done to Kyro and Rhianna who answered all questions correctly! They both spotted the x0 and were able to calculate the division with a remainder! Well done both!

Rhianna had an excellent explanation for the problem too - she said that Tommy couldn't order the numbers using as 2 numbers had the same 3 digits - we would need to look at the value of the tens digit before we ordered them.

--

Good morning from Miss Brookes!

I am secretly looking forward to the rain, but I hope I didn't jinx the weather by asking for it! I thought I would cheer you all up with a story of what happened to me when I was sleeping last night (it'll make you forget about the weather I requested!)

It was around midnight, and I was woken up by a buzzing sound! I turned on my lamp and peered out from under my duvet...only to find a wasp buzzing around! Now I don't normally mind wasps, I'm not one that runs away from a wasp when outdoors, but there is something about being tired and it being dark - that makes a wasp flying around and buzzing in your ear, terrifying!

So, I did the only logical thing I could think of...I hid under my duvet! From my hiding spot, I sent a message to my family, saying something along the lines of 'help. There's a wasp in my room. I'm hiding under my duvet. It is too warm under here' shortly followed by a 'why has no one come to rescue me?' I found out this morning from my mum that she was awake, heard the phone ping, and assumed it wasn't to do with her!

I sent a message out to my friends, and Ms Thornton gave me a tip! She said to use hairspray and tissue to get rid of the wasp. So I readied myself, climbed out from underneath my hiding spot, and turned on the main light. I could still hear the buzzing, but no matter how hard I looked - I couldn't find the wasp anywhere! I then opened my bedroom window as wide as it could go, as well as the blinds (which made my room very light), in hopes that the wasp would leave. I eventually fell asleep again, cocooned underneath my duvet...only to be woken up at 6.30 by a cat screeching in my garden! (I don't even own a cat).

I can still hear a buzzing noise, and my heart is still racing, but I think the wasp has gone now.

Anyway, I thought that story would cheer you up since I've asked for the rubbish weather!

Onto GVP. Today's focus is all about suffixes - and how we use them to convert nouns and adjectives into a verb. Before you watch the video, can you remember what a noun, adjective, verb and suffix is?

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=IEzpnwu

Enjoy your Monday!

Mrs Ranyard has discovered an exciting podcast for us all to listen to - The Space Race!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000hmmd

It's only 15 minutes long, and I highly recommend it!

Outstanding Learning!

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 4:01pm

It's time to celebrate all of the hard work you have done this week. Well done 5CB, I'm very proud of you!

We are winning timestable rockstars so far - we're just over 2,000 points ahead of 5HW! Well done!

A huge congratulations to the children who completed this week's reading challenge by managing to read 3 or more books! You are all owed a hot chocolate when we go back to school.

The winners are:

Sam (with 10 books!)

Denico (with 8 books!)

Dylan (with 4 books!)

Victoria (with 3 books!)

Tia (with 3 books!)

You only had to read 3 books, so well done everyone. Remember, the aim is to try and score 80% in all of the comprehension questions.

Thank you for everyone who has emailed pictures of their to me this week - and it's lovely to see some of you completing the wellbeing challenges as well!

I have to say, Jennifer's GVP made me laugh because all of her sentences were about the spider that attacked me! (Thankfully it was very small, and I didn't drop the IPad!) Below are some pictures of the amazing work I have seen.

Well done to the following children, who are also oustanding learners this week:

Jessica

Jennifer

Angelica

Jackson

Denico

I can't wait to see more of your wonderful work next week!

Have a fabulous weekend 5CB, you thoroughly deserve it!

Chester Zoo live again today!

Wellbeing challenge number 10

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 10:08am

Good morning everyone, another lovely sunny day! I can't wait to get out there in the sun for a bit.

Fot the last day of the week I'm giving you a slightly different wellbeing challenge today and it's something that always makes me feel happy and a bit better if I'm feeling a bit low.

Today's challenge is to do something nice for someone. Here are some ideas below although feel free to do one of your own ideas!

1. Read or tell a story to a younger brother or sister

2. Tidy your room

3. Do a chore or job for someone at home

4. Give someone a compliment

5. Share a toy or some food with someone at home

6. Make someone a present, picture or card

7. Offer to help an adult with the cooking or washing up

8. Write someone a poem or story

9. Tell someone a joke

10. Phone a friend or send them a nice message

See how many of the 10 you can do and remember to let us know what you have done!

I'm going to do some baking for my husband for my good deed and maybe make him a nice dinner as well. In fact, I might go and take him a cup of tea while he's doing his work! :-)

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Glover

Friday 24th April

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 8:43am

Good morning everyone! I just cannot get over this consistently sunny weather we're having! I think we might have a little BBQ this evening, and Livvi really wants to do some baking. We've found a recipe for rhubarb pots that she'd really like to try, and we're very lucky because we have some rhubarb growing in our garden. Maybe I'll post a photo of our baking results later!

We'd love to hear what you're getting up to today, and we LOVE seeing photos of your learning from the daily activities - watch out for the blog post later on today celebrating that brilliant learning!

--

Mrs Hodges here!

Here's the final Sentence of the Day for this week!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=9BRFvKi

Remember to check back to see my purple pen sentence later on!

Good afternoon! How did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to compare my corrected one to yours! Just about to start making the rhubarb pots with Livvi and Asaph, I'll let you know how I get on later!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Em3HJR2

Right, rhubarb pots are made! I've attached a photo - what do you think? I'm quite pleased with them, and I can already tell you from the sneaky taste I had, they're very delicious! I loved getting an email from Rhianna showing a cake she baked - have you been learning to cook or bake any new things?

--

Good Morning from Miss Wendt!

I have to say Mrs Hodges, I do love sweet treats featuring rhubarb - It's one of my favourite fruits! You are very lucky having rhubarb in your garden.

It's been lovely to see and read all of the emails this week, we will be posting some of your wonderful work later on today!

On with the maths...

Today I've got a fluent in five AND a challenge for you! I enjoyed doing the find all possibilities on Wednesday so I have included another of those.

Remember to email your answers to y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

--

Happy Friday everyone from Miss Brookes!

I have to say from reading these posts, baking does sound quite appealing! Though my brother has kindly been doing our essential shopping for us and his 'substitute' items for something like flour, would be something you can't even bake with, knowing my brother! I've got all of the equipment and none of the ingredients - Oh well, I will ask and we will see what turns up cheeky

I get so excited when my phone pings and it's the year 5 email with all of your fabulous work - well done everyone, I can't wait to see what else you get done while at home!

I have also had a go at one of the Connected Curriculum challenges. My mum has a free app on her IPad called 'Happy Colour by Numbers.' It gives you different pictures, and an array of colours. Every time you click on a colour, it highlights the area that needs to be coloured in - and then you tap on it and like magic, the colour appears! Each day there's a daily challenge, and on Wednesday my Mum said "this one looks a little bit complicated, can you do it for me?" Being the wonderful daughter I am, of course I offered to do the painting! Little did I know, it was going to be a Space painting of the Solar System! I've attached a picture of it for you all to see, as well as a video where you can see a speeded up version of how I painted it!

I can't wait to see your Connected Curriuclum challenges!

Now onto GVP. Can you remember the four key areas we looked at this week? Today is a recap on these areas, followed by a quiz for you all (which I have attached).

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=tOGi4My

I will post a video explaining the answers at around 3pm today, so good luck!

Good afternoon everyone!

Here are the answers for today's GVP quiz. How did you do?

Wellbeing challenge number 9

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 11:07am

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is finding ways to enjoy this amazing weather, I don't think we've ever had such a nice April before!

So today's wellbeing challenge is another way to make the most of the weather and get out in your gardens and do some gardening!

Here are some nice ideas for things to do that you don't really need many resources for: https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/10-gardening-projects-for-kids/

I bet you'll already have a lot of the things in your house or garden or you could collect some of them like twigs etc while out on a walk (make sure you wash your hands after if you do that!)  My favourite is the fairy garden.

Alternatively you could plant some seeds from something that you've just eatedn such as tomato seeds.

If you don't have a garden then why not design and draw your own garden (or fairy garden!) instead? You could maybe try and re-create it when you're older and have your own garden!

I have a balcony rather than a garden and had never done any gardening until a few weeks ago but below are a couple of pictures of the things I've planted! I'm watering them every day and the sun is making most of them grow nice and tall.

Have fun and remember to let us know what you've done!

Mrs Glover

Thursday 23rd April

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 8:31am

Hello Year 5! Well, what a relief, Asaph didn't wake us up until 7am (though perhaps that still sounds early to Miss Brookes and Miss Wendt after yesterday's luxury wake up time?!), so I feel much more bright and alert for today! How are you? Remember we'd love to hear from you and how you're getting on - get in touch with us using our Year 5 email: y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Have a lovely day!

--

Good morning from Mrs Hodges!

How did you get on with the writing activity yesterday? Did you find out the meaning of any new vocabulary? I'd love to see your sentences!

Today I'm giving you a Sentence of the Day, one of the errors practises some of the GVP learning Miss Brookes set you a couple of days ago, can you remember it I wonder? Click the link below to see it!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=LgUPH2e

Right, let's check out today's corrected sentence! Click on the link below to see if your sentence is now correct too!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=3apEXUu

--

Hola from Miss Wendt!

I thought today we would start with some maths. I enjoyed setting the problem yesterday so I have found a different type of problem, which still practices the 4 operations. Have a look at this one, I'll also do some working out and put the answer on later!

Here is my working out. Adding and subtracting £27 made no difference to the total, so it was a simple calculation of 3 x 114.

Did anyone have the same conclusion? Did anyone have more calculations than mine?

Today I've also been thinking about our Spanish learning. It's very important that we keep up practicing our language skills, even if it's just for a few minutes each day. I want to start with a recap about the days of the week. I've attached a word bank with the days in English and Spanish - and also a guide of how to say these words.

If you want to put the days of the week into a sentence, practice saying ...

Hoy es Jueves

...which means Today is Thursday!

You can also try this with the other 6 days!

--

Good morning Year 5 from Miss Brookes!

I had a llttle listen to Mrs Hodges sentence of the day, and she's right (not that I ever doubted her!), it is linked with some of the GVP learning we looked at earlier on this week (I'm not going to tell you which one though, that would be cheating!) Well done to the children who have been emailing in their work this week - I can't wait to include you in our Friday learners of the week!  Today's GVP video, features me getting attacked by a spider right at the very end - and I know 5CB understand my fear of spiders, so I did very well not to drop the IPad!

Today's GVP is all about commas, and the four different ways we can use them. I know that sometimes we can forget about adding a comma, so hopefully this will give you some key reminders. Can you name all 4 uses before you watch the video?

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=4y2JNq4

I've also atttached today's worksheet. Tomorrow will be a recap about the four different GVP skills we have focussed on this week. I can't wait to see your answers!

Wellbeing challenge number 8

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 11:29am

Good morning, Happy Wednesday everyone! I can't believe it's already the middle of the week.

Since we have such lovely weather today (and for most of the week!) my challenge for you today is to get outside and enjoy the sun and see what you can see!

Some of you may be lucky enough to have a garden and if you do then you can do my challenge from there but a walk would be even better and then you can be more active too. Yesterday I went for a lovely walk to Philips Park as I'm lucky enough to only live a 20 minute walk away, see some of my pictures below.

While you're out either in your garden or your walk, have a spring scavenger hunt to see what you can see. Why not get an adult to take a picture of the list on their phones so you can take it with you and see what you can tick off? Or maybe write them on a piece of paper and take it with you so you can tick off the items as you go!

On my walk I saw grass, bird nests, yellow flowers, clouds, worms, sticks, green leaves, dandelions and some beautiful blossom trees too. I didn't see any bunnies unfortnatey but I did see some cute little squirrels!

Make sure you e-mail your class e-mail addresses to let us know what you found and maybe even some photos too.

Mrs Glover

Here are some pictures of my walk:

Past challenges

Thanks to Mrs Iqbal's son, Adam for his picture of his happy place.

And also to Tomasz in Reception who also sent his picture. They both look lovely and very cosy!

Wednesday 22nd April

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 8:46am

Good morning Year 5, another sunny day! I'm a little bleary eyed this morning as Asaph woke up BEFORE 6am - I think the bright sunlight is making him wake up earlier! I'm not complaining though, I would much rather this weather than rain. We're having a go at growing some vegetables in our garden, so we're having to water them every day because it's so sunny - another little job for today! What are you going to get up to? Remember to check back in with this blog post to see the activities we put on for you today and email to show us what you've been doing!

--

Hello from Mrs Hodges!

Two activities from me today - let's start with our Sentence of the Day, the final one linked to the YouTube link I posted on Monday about exercising on the International Space Station.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=qHCjMYq

I'd love to see your corrected sentence before I post my purple pen later on!

The second activity is a writing and vocabulary focus based around a photo called "The Wilderness". There's a story starter for you to read, with some question prompts to help you build a story around the photo. The part I'd especially like to you focus on is the Sentence Challenge, where you need to underline any words you don't know the meaning of in the story starter given to you, look them up (or search on an online dictionary, this is a good one: https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/) and then use that word in a new sentence that's based on the photo.

I've attached the file to this blog, I can't wait to see the sentences you create!

There's a couple more activities attached to that photo - if you're feeling extra keen and would like to do those too, that would be fabulous!

Good afternoon! How did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to see my purple pen!

Hello from Miss Wendt!

I did the exact opposite to Mrs Hodges today and I had a lie-in! I usually get up very early but for some reason today, I slept until 8 o'clock! I feel very rested now, and ready to give you a challenge!

I thought we'd try something different today, so I have chosen a 'find all possibilities' style question. Remember, this means there will be more than one answer or maybe different methods to solve the problem.

I wonder who can email me the most solutions?

I'll be back later with an example of an answer!

How did you all do?

Here are a few examples of the numbers I found.

10,000 and 6535

12,000 and 8535

I decided to use my knowledge of the inverse to subtract the difference (3465) from a 5-digit number. Did anyone have a different method?

--

Good Morning from Miss Brookes!

I think I must be entirely different to Mrs Hodges and Miss Wendt...firstly, I really want it to rain! I just love the sound of rain when you can stay cosy indoors. Secondly, I got up at 9am today and I'm still yawning!

Well done to the nine children who have taken part in the reading challenge so far. Keep up the brilliant work!

Today's GVP video is all about modal verbs. No pictures of Merlin today I'm afraid (he was being very camera shy!) But I'm sure you'll enjoy it none-the-less.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=ZqZzniC

Can you order the 10 modal verbs to show which ones mean you are 'definitely' going to do a task?

I hope you have a fabulous Wednesday and enjoy the sunshine (even if I want it to rain - Sorry Mrs Hodges!)

Hello and welcome back after the Easter holidays, I hope everyone had a good Easter! My husband bought me a delicious unicorn Easter Egg although I haven't finished it yet!

Today's wellbeing challenge is to design your own Happy Place. Here is an online game where you can build your own virtual happy place by just dragging and dropping objects into your room.

https://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/games/build-your-happy-place/

You even get to choose your own wallpaper! Or if you don't fancy that, why not draw and colour a picture of your happy place? Or you could even do both!

Here's a picture of the room that I built, I wish could build a real room like it!

Please send any pictures of your happy place rooms to your home learning e-mail addresses, I'd love to see them.

Tuesday 21st April

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 8:27am

Hello Year 5!

It's another beautifully sunny day (I am SO thankful for this lovely weather we're having!), and we're up and ready for our day - Livvi, Asaph and I are going to start off doing PE with Joe Wicks, then I think they've chosen to start their stories today. Asaph's is about a dinosaur and Livvi's is an increasingly complicated story about the great great granddaughter of Howard Carter who discovers his diary, gets sucked into it (taking her back to the Ancient Egyptian era), and has to break the curse of the golden statue of Bastet. Or something like that...to be honest, it got a bit hard to follow as she was thinking of ideas yesterday, so wish me luck for today!! I'm going to set you a little writing activity tomorrow, I can't wait to read your ideas and brilliant word choices, I'm so missing reading your fantastic writing!

But back to today - remember to keep checking in with today's blog post to find the activities that Miss Wendt, Miss Brookes and I put on! Don't forget to email us to show us what you've been up to!

--

Good morning from Mrs Hodges!

Are you ready for today's Sentence of the Day? Remember it's linked to the YouTube video I posted yesterday of how astronauts exercise on the International Space Station, so check back to Monday's blog post if you haven't watched it yet!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=iYCFZQW

I'd love to see your corrected sentence before I post my purple pen video later this afternoon!

Hi from Miss Wendt!

Hello Year 5! Hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine. Like Mrs Hodges said, I too am very thankful for the lovely weather. I've set myself up a little desk in my back garden so I can enjoy the fresh air while I'm working.

Have a look at today's maths. It includes a negative number calculation, a skill we first practiced in September! Who can remember the rules?

I'll update with the answers later!

Hello again!

How did you all get on? Did anyone remember the strategy we use to multiply larger numbers? Here are todays answers, see if you got 5/5!

See you tomorrow with a slightly different challenge!

--

Good Morning Year 5! Miss Brookes here.

I hope you all had a wonderful Monday, and will have an even better Tuesday. A huge well done to the children that have already begun the reading challenge! I was very impressed when I checked Reading Plus yesterday evening.

There are two lessons from me today, GVP and Science!

Today's GVP is focusing on relative clauses (5CB know how much I love to use them!) I can't wait to read the sentences you come up with to describe Merlin and Disney Land.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=d2xw1Eu

And now for science...

I was looking forward to recording the science video yesterday, this is my favourite science unit to teach! Just like our connected curriculum, it is all about Space (how exciting!) I've attached the worksheet I mention, and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Which planet is your favourite?

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=QEbBamO

Can you think of a mnemonic to remember the order of the planets in our Solar System?

Here is one:

Weekly Reading Challenge

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 9:58am

Good Morning everyone!

It's been great to see that some of you have been on Reading Plus, and have been earning that hot chocolate and biscuit (I can't wait to give it to you)!

The same rules apply here in our Reading Challenges, those that show they have tried their best will be earning some outstanding awards.

This weeks focus is still on Reading Plus. Since the beginning of this month, over half of you haven't been on the website - not even once. I understand that sometimes it can be tricky to find the time in the day to use Reading Plus, but even something as short as 15 minutes a day can help boost your reading skills.

Therefore, this week I am setting you the challenge of reading 3 books. Some of you may wish to read more, but a lot of you haven't read any yet (or have only read 1 or 2 since the programme began!)

If you cannot remember your log in details, or you are struggling to access the website, please do email us and we can try to help: y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Connected Curriculum - 3 Week Challenge!

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 9:34am

Good Morning everyone!

Our focus this half term is Space, and more specifically, 'what's inside an astronauts suitcase?'

This is my favourite to teach, so I am very excited to share the three week challenge with you! Below, there are six different activities to choose from. These include: writing, research and creating activities.

It is entirely up to you which activity you choose - I'm going to choose one as well to complete - so pick the one that makes you the most excited for learning. You have three weeks to complete it.

If you choose to create the 'how to' guide for surving on the International Space Station, here are some useful youtube links:

Space Kitchen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZx0RIV0wss

Sleeping in Space - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyFYgeE32f0

Brushing your Teeth in Space - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU9kffoAQ8U

Washing your Hair in Space  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOIj7AgonHM

Those are just a few of the exciting videos out there. If you search on youtube Chris Hadfield International Space Station you will find even more!

There is also a great website for finding out about different planets at: https://space-facts.com/planets/

I haven't decided which challenge I am going to accept yet, maybe I will make a space helmet out of tinfoil, or perhaps create a fact file about my favourite planet (which is Mars).

Look out for my weekly science lessons as well, because they will also be focused on Space and might help you if you're researching planets!

Don't forget to send pictures of what you have created to y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Monday 20th April

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 7:33am

Good morning Year 5! Welcome back after your Easter break - we hope you've had a lovely time doing things at home (and perhaps a daily walk or bike ride, or have you been doing any Easter baking?) and enjoyed the sunshine!

We’re ready and raring to go with our daily blog posts again! They’ll look a little different to before Easter - Miss Brookes, Miss Wendt and I have been talking about how we can join together so that both Year 5 classes are doing the same activities. So, here’s what you can expect to see over these next few weeks of home learning!

* Some ideas for different Connected Curriculum activities for you to choose from over the next 3 weeks - our theme is SPACE! Mrs Hodges' favourite! (well, after the Victorians that is)

* Weekly Reading Challenge (posted on a Monday)

* Daily blog post with Maths, GVP and Sentence of the Day activities

* A Science, Writing/Vocabulary and Spanish activity throughout the week, which we’ll tell you about in the daily blog post

Make sure you check our blog post every day to find your new activities and remember that we would LOVE to see the learning you’ve been doing at home (and are also more than happy to answer any questions you have about the activities we’ve set), so please email us and we can celebrate your fabulous achievements together! Our special Year 5 email is:

y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

We’re missing you all very much, and can’t wait to be back together again. We’re so proud of each one of you, we hope you remember that as you set aside a bit of time each day to do some learning and stay safe at home!

Love Mrs Hodges, Miss Wendt and Miss Brookes x

Mrs Hodges here!

Hello everyone! Are you ready for your Sentence of the Day? I really miss doing this with you in person, but for now, my Show Me videos are a pretty good second choice! Before you check out today’s sentence, I’d like you to have a watch of this video of Mark Vande Hei (an astronaut) telling us about how they exercise on the International Space Station (remember, that’s the floating laboratory which orbits Earth!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyJEtayJwFQ

Our next 3 Sentence of the Days are going to be to do with this video. Here we go - remember to email across your corrected sentence, and I’ll post my purple pen video later on today!

Right everyone, how did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to see my corrected sentence!

Good Morning from Miss Wendt!

I was thinking about the different things that we can practice to keep our mathematical skills sharp. This week we are going to be looking at quick questions featuring the 4 different operations - addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

Have a look at the questions below and think about which ones you can work out in your head, and which may need a written method. Remember to email your answers!

I'll update with the correct answers at the end of the day!

Hello from Miss Brookes!

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and are excited to begin some learning!

Each day I will be sharing a 'show me' video for GVP. Along with this video, there will be some additional activities for you to complete, with the same focus. This week, we are beginning with parenthesis.

https://www.showme.com/sh/?h=QHff7wm

I can't wait to see what sentences you create to do with the photograph of Merlin!

I have also attached a worksheet for you, where you need to use brackets, dashes and commas to show parenthesis.

Note: A dash is longer than a hyphen (I knew there was a difference!)

Have a lovely Monday!

And now for the answers...

Have a look at the Fluent in 5 answers for today - did anyone get them all correct? Did you decide which calculations could be worked out using mental methods, and which may need a written method? Next to the answer is a clue that might help!

Miss Wendt x

Wellbeing holiday challenge

Date: 6th Apr 2020 @ 11:35am

Hi everyone,

Happy Easter holidays!

If you're still looking to stay busy over the holidays then I know the teachers are setting some fun activities but you could also give this exciting project a go!

Liverpool Museum are asking children between the age of 4 and 11 to create their own exhibition or gallery all about you and your favourite things. The project involves creating a project, designing a poster and then creating a video and some of them will even win the chance to have their exhibition feature on their website as well as spending an afternoon at the museum and getting a behind the scenes tour.

There is more information here : https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/my-home-my-museum and in these pictures below. Please send us pictures or links to your home e-mail addresses if you do this!

If you missed any of the wellbeing challenges from last week then why not give them a go too?

Happy Easter!

Mrs Glover

Easter Baking Ideas!

Date: 4th Apr 2020 @ 9:05am

Good morning Ravensbury!

I'm just getting my shopping list ready and was looking up some Easter baking receipes I thought my children would enjoy over these next couple of weeks. There are some lovely ideas on the BBC Good Food website, and thought you might like to have a go at some Easter baking too!

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easter-kids

Really, I'm hoping to make Hot Cross Buns for the first time - but that all depends on whether I can buy some bread flour, and the flour aisle in the shops has been pretty empty! Perhaps I'll find some today!

Wishing you all a lovely Easter (and happy baking!),

Mrs Hodges x

Reading Plus Challenge!

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 1:57pm

Happy Friday!

Over half term, we are setting you a reading plus challenge. There will be an award for the child who completes the most lessons, and for the child who reads the most words - each week! (The overall winning class will earn some extra break too!)

Those that win the challenge, will get to have an outstanding award (for those that are in 5HW, this means that Miss Brookes will owe you a hot chocolate and biscuit for when we return to school! 5CB, you know how tasty those hot chocolates can be when Mrs Turner makes them!), you will get to choose a prize from the prize box (just as you do when you complete your reading bookmark) and you will get a shout out on our school's twitter feed! How exciting!

If you are unsure of your log in details, please email y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk and we will let you know how to access the site.

The winners for this week, and those that are already setting the bar pretty high for the rest of us, are:

Most Lessons Completed: Dylan (with 5 lessons! Well done, Dylan!)

Most Read Words: Rhianna (with 3,625 words! Wow! Have you learnt some new vocabularly?)

Good luck, and we can't wait to see who wins next week.

Miss Brookes, Mrs Hodges & Miss Wendt

Wellbeing challenge number 6

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:54am

Happy Friday everyone and well done for learning at home for 2 whole weeks! As strange as I've found it not being at school, the time has flown by for me so I hope it feels the same for you.

I'm going to do one final wellbeing challenge for today and then take a break for the next 2 weeks for the Easter holiday. However, check back on Monday morning as over the weekend I am going to set you a little wellbeing project in case anyone wants an Easter challenge.

Since it's the end of the week, today's challenge is to relax and get ready for the weekend so I want everyone to do a guided meditation. This is when you close your eyes and listen to a lovely soothing voice transport you to somewhere new. They are great for helping you to sleep or if you just want to relax at the end of your learning.

There are plenty available on Youtube, here are a few of my favourites:

Secret treehouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWOHcGF1Tmc

Spaceship to the moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV9BBR1RoGg

Hot air balloon ride - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv6Y1tq1sQ

Have a great Easter holiday and don't forget to check back for the challenge next week if you think you'd like to do it. I'll be back with a daily challenge from Monday the 20th of April if we're still at home then.

Past challenges

Thank you to Mrs Ganner for sending me a photo of her daughter completing the baking challenge from earlier in the week, it looks amazing and has made me want to bake something chocolately myself this weekend! I think I might make some brownies as a treat for my husband!
