Glider Competition!!

Date: 27th Mar 2022 @ 6:21pm

This week we learnt about the first flight and The Wright Brothers as a follow up from our visit to Manchester Airport last week. We found out what inspired the Wright Brothers to make the very first glider and learnt that the first flight lasted for only 12 seconds. We also learnt about Bessie Coleman and why she was an important figure in the world of aviation and flight. We were amazed at her determination to become a pilot and the class were very humble to learn that she learnt French so that she could go to France and learn how to become a pilot! We learnt something new and made some origami gliders out of paper. We then took them out on to the playground for a glider competetion to find out which design went the furthest. Kairo was our winner and saw his glider fly the furthest away on the playground. Well Done!!!

Next week we will be exploring cars and going into the world of Design and Technology. Watch out for next week's blog!

The Masked Parade

Date: 27th Mar 2022 @ 10:43am

As part of the children's learning about China the children got an opportunity to make chinese influenced masks. Some of the children decided to make dragon masks whereas other children decided to make chinese opera inspired masks. They designed their masks and then used a range of collage materials to make them. It was lovely to see the classroom so busy! After they had completed their masks they displayed them around the school. They enjoyed the parade around the daily mile, especially when the children from other year groups clapped and cheered them on!

I think you will agree that the masks look amazing! All the children worked so hard and I am sure you are as proud of the children as I am.

Enjoy the weekend

Nursery Ducks

Date: 25th Mar 2022 @ 4:58pm

In Nursery this week we have been very lucky to hatch our own fluffy ducklings!

The children have been amazed watching the ducklings hatch one by one from their shells.  We have been sharing lots of stories about ducks and thinking about how we can take care of the ducks in our classroom.

Gymnastics 6DL

Date: 24th Mar 2022 @ 1:34pm

The children in 6DL had a great PE lesson. They were exploring how to use the apparatus to develop Their skills of 'Weight on Hands' and were rehearsing their sequences to make improvements.

Year 6 Connected Curriculum Launch-Traffic Survey

Date: 24th Mar 2022 @ 12:56pm

Year 6 have been conducting a traffic survey to find out the volume of traffic passing the school during the school day. We will be using this information to help us to monitor the air pollution in the area and explore ways to reduce the amount of traffic. This links to our topic on Climate Change and the children will be exploring ways in which they can help to reduce Global Warming and make a difference.

The language of time

Date: 23rd Mar 2022 @ 4:51pm

Our KS2 group has been using the language of time to compare one time with another. We've used it in our CC to compare two different periods of time and we can use it in sentences to answer questions about time.

Greek Landscapes

Date: 23rd Mar 2022 @ 9:29am

In art, we have produced some Greek landscapes inspired by the work of Nikolas Georgoudakis. He was a talented illustrator and painter and he grew up on the island of Kos. We learned lots of new skills such as drawing using perspective. We thought about drawing objects close up and in the distance using the vanishing point. We also practised 3D drawings and blending different shades to create the sea and the sunset. Look at our beautiful artwork.

Red Nose Day

Date: 20th Mar 2022 @ 8:37pm

Friday 18th March was Red Nose Day! It was lovely to see all the red around school as everyone came in dressed to raise some money for charity. The theme for the day was Try Something New. As it was also recently St. Patrick's Day, we decided in year 5 to combine the two and give the children a chance to have a go at limericks! Although the jokes in some of the poems passed many of the children by, they did enjoy acting them out!

Manchester Airport Trip!!!

Date: 19th Mar 2022 @ 11:18pm

What a busy week we have had in Year 1!!! On Wednesday we dressed in yellow and blue in support for the children of Ukraine. On Friday it was Red Nose Day where we came to school dressed in red and tried something new. In 1AI we have been trying yoga with Miss Prescott which was new to us. It was a little tricky doin the poses but have decided that we will continue with this each week and become better at it.

On Thursday we had an amazing trip to the Runway Part at Manchester Airport. This was our very trip out of school for these children due to the Pandemic. The children were realy excited and their behavaiour was amazing. All the grown ups that went on the trip were super proud.

The day was filled with lots of learning about aircraft parts, jobs at an airport and the parts of Concorde. We even sat inside the cockpit of an aircraft and imagined what it would have been like to be a pilot. We saw Concorde up close and it was amazing!!! We learnt that it used to have 100 passengers, it had supersonic speed and 12 wheels. We also found out that the queen travelled on Concorde as well! We saw aeroplabes land and take off on the runway outside. We saw some great big planes which belonged to the airline Emirates and Qatar Airlines. They were huge planes!!!

It was an amazing day which was filled with lots of learning!!!

Science Week!

Date: 19th Mar 2022 @ 6:55am

This week we have been scientists and exploring the theme of Growth! We have been exploring things around us that grow and discussing the changes things and animals make from our observations. We also conducted an experiment using spagehetti and marshmellows where we had to carefully build a tower or construction. It was fantastic to see our buildings grow!

Red Nose Day 2022

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 7:31pm

Wow ! What a busy week reception have had! We finished off our week wonderfully by celebrating Red Nose Day.

The children made Red Nose Day crowns, silly nose biscuits and even had a nose and spoon race. Their favourite part of the day was definitely telling one another their best jokes and having a good laugh together on the carpet.

Thankyou everyone for your donations!

Here are a few of our favourite jokes so that you can have a chuckle too...

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because he wanted to eat ice cream!

Knock knock, whose there, woo? Woo hoo

Why did Elsa have a balloon? She didn't want to let it go!

Science week

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 7:10pm

This week was science week. To celebrate the children all put on their lab jackets and practiced their science skills. They explored, observed, experimented and most importantly they had lots of fun!

Science Week

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 2:10pm

This week we have been celebrating Science Week!
The children worked in groups to use spaghetti and marshmallows to create the tallest tower they could.  It ended up being a lot trickier than we thought it would be and we had to use all of our team-work skills to succeed.

Have a look at our structures below - which one do you think won?

Science Week!

Date: 17th Mar 2022 @ 3:14pm

To celebrate Science Week 2022, 4CB decided to attempt the challenge of creating their own optical illusions.

After looking at many examples of different illusions, 4CB used the style of many different artists to create a range of their own illusions.

They did an amazing job!

Well done 4CB :)

Magnetic Poles

Date: 17th Mar 2022 @ 2:48pm

In science today, we investigated magnetic poles. We looked at what poles attract and which poles repel. We made a prediction before starting our investigation. In our investigation, we concluded the same poles repel and opposites attract.

Investigating present perfect

Date: 15th Mar 2022 @ 2:11pm

Today, Y4 have been investigating how we form the present perfect tense. We looked for it and found it in our book too.

Comparing Numbers

Date: 13th Mar 2022 @ 6:16pm

Last week we continued to think of the place value of numbers within 100. We learnt about the greater than, less then and equal signs and how we can use them to compare numbers. We used Numicon to make numbers and then explored which sign would be needed in the middle to compare. We used the vocabulary greater than, less than and is the same as/equal to to say our sentences.

Week 2

Date: 13th Mar 2022 @ 12:53pm

After a very busy first week back (World Book Day and the excitement of the holidays) we have completed week 2!

The children have been working hard to demonstrate their understanding of two digit numbers. They have looked at the numbers up to 100 and represented them using base 10 , numicon, number sentences and part whole models.

PWM.JPGnumicon.JPGbase 10.JPG

In English, we have looked at the story, Naughty Bus and retold the story using the Time Connectives: First, Next, Then, After that and Finally. The children are really confident when it comes to using these words now and I can seem them applying this skill in their independent writing too! Ask them if they can retell you the story...

Next week is our first ever trip! We are all so excited to go to the airport and see the aeroplanes. I wonder what other veichles we will see while we are there?

As always, please come and see me if you want to discuss anything we have been doing in class. We will have the opportunity to meet again in Week 5 for Parents Evening too, this will be a wonderful opportunity for you to look at your child's work in their books too.

I am looking forward to another busy week with the children! See you on Monday,

Miss Higgins :)

Investigating Friction

Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 5:39pm

In science this half term we are learning all about forces and magnets. Today we investigated how much friction is caused by different materials. We placed a toy car on a ramp covered in different materials and raised the ramp at one end until the car moved. We discovered sandpaper caused the most friction and plastic caused the least friction.

Roman Artefacts

Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 5:30pm

In our connected curriculum lesson this week, we became archaeologists. We got to dig and uncover different artefacts from the Roman era. Some of the things we discovered were: coins, knucklebones (a Roman game), gladiators' sandals, a helmet, a shield, jewellery, armour and tiles from a mosaic.
