World Book Day 2022

Date: 8th Mar 2022 @ 7:54am

On Thursday 3rd March, it was World Book Day. We had so much fun celebrating all the amazing books we love!

We had some fantastic costumes on display in our class from aliens to superheroes, princesses to animals and so much more. It was fantastic to see everyone so excited about their costumes and show off in our catwalk/dance party with LKS2.

We had a surprise waiting for us in school that morning. At the front of the classroom, there was a bag full of presents and it was addressed to 3MS, that's us! We opened some of the presents and found out that they were books! They were books from an author called Zanib Mian all about a series called Planet Omar. We read the blurbs and thought it would be really exciting to look at these books a bit more today.

We read a few chapters of the first book, 'My Friend the Alien' and thought how funny it sounded. We decided to create our own aliens like the illustrations in the books. You can see us working hard on these in the pictures.

We were so lucky to have Miss Brookes from year 4 come and read us a story. It was called 'Aliens Love Underpants' and that might explain why all of our adults in school were dressed like aliens!

Next, we thought about how many exciting, informative and interesting books we have looked at this year in year 3. We discussed what we liked about different books and created some front covers and book reviews about these texts. We can't wait to see all of this amazing work up in our classroom on display.

After all the excitement of the day, it was time for one last story time before home time! We had a great day in year 3 and can't wait to explore stories even more this year.

Roman Launch!

Date: 8th Mar 2022 @ 7:35am

This half term we will be finding out more all about the Romans!

On our launch day we spoke about what we already knew about the Romans and what we would like to find out more about.

We looked at some of the events that took place during the Roman times and we used some of our history skills to plot these onto a timeline. We used BCE and CE to order the dates.

At the end of the day, to celebrate all of our hard work, we had a Roman Banquet! We discovered that a lot of food was brought to Rome by boat from other countries. We learnt that some food we have today was considered a really big treat back then. We also found out that there were no supermarkets like we have today.

We tried goat's cheese, figs, dates, olives, pear and fruit cake. Lots of us tried new foods today that we haven't had before.

Cross Curricular Orienteering Lesson

Date: 7th Mar 2022 @ 5:12pm

On Friday we had our first PE orienteering lesson. We had so much fun working in teams to create 'Silly Faces'. The objective was to work in teams using the equipment given to create the silly face card accurately using the information on the map. The children had such fun tranferring the information from the diagram into reality using the equipment. They worked brilliantly in teams and were very energetic. I know they cannot wait until the next lesson to take on another new challenge. Well done 6JT!

World Book Day

Date: 7th Mar 2022 @ 5:01pm

Year 4 had such a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day this year! We investigated a new author called Nizrana Farook who writes books about animals set in incredible places!
We started to read her first ever book called 'The Girl who Stole and Elephant' a story about Chaya, our hero who leads her friends and a gorgeous elephant on a noisy, fraught, joyous adventure through the jungle where revolution is stirring and leeches lurk. Will stealing the queen’s jewels be the beginning or the end of everything for the intrepid gang? We will have to wait and see!

The children then created some wonderful elephant poems using the skills we practiced last half term.

In the afternoon we had so much fun going in the hall to perform a catwalk to show off our costumes to the other Year 3 and 4 chidlren. Have a look below to see some of our amazing costumes. We also had a great time trying to work out which members of staff were hidden by the masked singer.. some were really tricky!

Chinese Launch!

Date: 7th Mar 2022 @ 4:18am

This week 2HR launched their new CC topic which is 'Where would you rather live; Wuhan or Manchester?' The children explored the chinese artefacts, books and images. Hello!

We had so much fun celebrating world book day today and loved seeing all of your fantastic costumes! Everybody did so well in our World Book Day parade and at guessing which teacher was reading the story in the 'masked reader'.

In Nursery our focus author was 'Tom Percival' who has written lots of amaizng stories! We read stories such as 'Tilda Tries Again' and 'Ravi's Roar'. I wonder if your child can tell you their favourite story we read today!

Hunting for right angles

Date: 1st Mar 2022 @ 1:33pm

Today in maths we started a new maths topic 'angles'. We learnt all about acute, right and obtuse angles. Then we went on a hunt in the playground and classroom to find some. We used angle eaters to measure the angles we found.

Right Angle Hunt

Date: 1st Mar 2022 @ 12:47pm

Today we began our 2D shape unit in maths. We discussed all the things we already know about 2D shapes. We could name loads of different shapes!

We spoke about the different angles in the angle family, obtuse angles, acute angles and right angles. We used our angle eaters to find different angles in the classroom and in our outside space too. Check out the pictures to see all the different right angles we could find. We found then on doors, books, benches and even the displays too!

We can't wait to continue exploring all things shape.

Olympics Experience

Date: 26th Feb 2022 @ 10:13am

What a half term we have had in year 5. We managed to pack in so much learning : fractions and lots of work with decimals in maths, the human life cycle in science, Greek myths in English and lots of lots of learning about Ancient Greece in our connected curriculum work. Every child in the class has worked incredibly hard. Let's hit Spring 2 with just as much energy!

At the end of our connected curriculum learning, we brought together all the work we'd done in order to put on a mini-Olympics. The children took part in four athletics events - the shotput, the javelin, the long jump and a relay race. Everyone did amazingly well and we discovered an athlete in our class who has been hiding in plain sight!

Well done 5CR - you've had a great half term!

Performance Poetry

Date: 18th Feb 2022 @ 11:20am

In English, we have been looking at the poem 'I was born in the Stone Age' by Michael Rosen. First, we read the poem and then we watched him perform it. We then thought about how to perform the poem ourselves. We thought carefully about using actions, pace and volume. Here are some of our performances.

Fantastic Behaviour!

Date: 18th Feb 2022 @ 9:25am

Yesterday, year 4 celebrated their amazing behaviour, by taking part in a 'Just Dance Disco!'

Everyone has worked extremely hard this half term, and it was lovely to celebrate our behaviour and determination with you.

Have a lovely break,

Miss Brookes and Miss Kenwell

Finding tens and ones...

Date: 17th Feb 2022 @ 9:25pm

This week in our maths lessons we have been doing some new learning linked to counting within 50 and recognising how many tens and ones are in 2-digit numbers. We were using diennes or sometimes they are called base 10 to support our learning. We read 2 digit numbers and used diennes to make the numbers and recognise how many tens and ones are in the 2-digit number. It was a little tricky but we persevered and began to understand how to use the diennes.

Spring 1 Round Up!

Date: 17th Feb 2022 @ 4:06pm

Hello again!

We made it to the end of term - pats on the backs all around!

Our children have been working incredibly hard this term. This week we had some visitors come to watch a writing lesson and each of the adults were incredibly impressed with how independent the children were with their writing. We had some amazing adjectives and the sentences the children produced were incredible. I am super proud! Please do come and see me if you would like to take a look at everything we have been up to this term.

Yesterday we looked at a music video and the children generated some adjectives together - see if you can test them on their adjectives!

This week we have finished making our DT projects: Puppets! They turned out great and the children had a wonderful time making them. It was difficult to sew with the materials we chose but everyone was really resilient and did a great job! I just hope all the googly eyes stayed on...

Tomorrow we will be having our final independent write of the term. After seeing the progress made in the last few weeks I have no doubt that it will be amazing. In the afternoon as a well-deserved reward for their effort this term we will be enjoying a movie afternoon and a disco!

I can't wait to see the children tomorrow and celebrate another successful term of Year 1!

Miss Higgins :)

Investigating what soil is made from.

Date: 17th Feb 2022 @ 8:41am

In science, we have been exploring how soil is formed and what makes soil. We started by going outside to look for soil and exploring what we could see in the soil. We then used magnifying glasses to look more closely at chalky, sandy and clay soil.

Learning vocabulary for our reading book

This week, Y1 have been learning the new vocabulary in our reading book.

We practised recognising the graphemes, checked we knew the phonemes, decoded the words and matched the words to the pictures.

Finally, we were able to read the whole reading book! Great work Y1!

Toys Drama Workshop

Date: 12th Feb 2022 @ 6:05pm

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have a visitor called Allison from the Freshwater Theatre Company. She transformed into a Toy Museum Curator and took us on a journey into her Toy Museum. We used our drama and imagination to move through this museum into four different rooms- teddy bears, moving toys, dolls and New toys. We used drama, dance and our speaking and listening skills to move our bodies like different toys, learn lots of facts about toys from the past and we invented our own toys.

It was lots of fun!!!
