Today we practised asking and giving opinions on school subjects in Spanish…what brilliant accents and confidence we are developing.
What did you learn at Ghyll Head?

Josh: First I t thought all the activities would be scary but once I did one activity I just kept pushing myself to do more. My favourite thing was jumping in the lake because it was something totally different – in fact I have only ever been in water in the bath or at the swimming pool!
Adam: It was definitely worth it because the instructors were really helpful and kind and encouraged us to do all the activities. I felt really proud that I did the zip-wire, I was very nervous before…but it was the best feeling ever when you take a step off the platform and fly through the air!
Olivia: The canoeing was definitely the best because we got to jump in the lake – when Wanessa went in first she screamed her head off! I felt really proud of myself during canoeing because I was very determined and tried my hardest to be a good leader. I think the food was amazing too,especially the desserts!
Taylor-Louise: I thought Ghyll Head was a great experience because there were so many activities to do. if you didn’t want to do one or you were scared, everyone supported you to have a go. I got to know some other children well that I didn’t know before in my group, like Emmanuel.

Last week Year 6 met two terrifying teachers from the time of WW2: Mrs Gilbertson and Mrs Robertson. First there was a fingernail inspection…
Then the boys were separated from the girls and they had completely different activities….the girls had to do all the task that girls in WW2 would have had to do, like cooking, folding clothes and ironing…
…while the boys got to play with jacks, cars, aeroplanes and toy soldiers…That’s hardly fair!!!
Then it was time to collect names on dance cards for partner at the upcoming WW2 Ravensbury Annual Ball…

The Year 2 teachers are a sneaky bunch! Today they decided to split Year 2 in half – half of the children becoming workers in a Victorian mansion, and the other half becoming well-off Victorians enjoying their leisure time. As you can see, not all the children were happy about this! Don’t worry though, every had a chance to experience both life as a poor servant, and as an affluent business owner!
*Update* – following our previous post, we asked what skills you thought girls learned during the Victorian era. Did you guess? Embroidery, painting, handwriting and reading!

Why did Victorian girls not learn maths?

Today our children had the chance to experience life as a girl and a boy in the Victorian era. You might be surprised to find out that school was very different for boys and girls. Boys were able to learn maths, science, history and geography, where as some girls didn’t even go to school! They were often taught at home by governess’!

Year 2 have recently been doing some assessments, they have worked so hard and everyone at Ravensbury are so proud of them! As a special surprise Miss Wendt and Ms Foord arranged for an ice cream van to come to school!

Andy Goldsworthy-inspired art part 2…

Using the natural resources that we collected last time, we explored some of the key elements of art to create our own work. This session we sketched the leaves paying attention to FORM….
…made a foam template and used them for some two-tone lino printing, paying attention to COLOUR…
…and finally made some natural sculptures using the laminator, paying attention to PATTERN.

Thank you to all the parents who came to the meeting on Wednesday. We really appreciate your support in helping us ready your child for moving into Year 3.
Some parents have requested the 5 key well-being skills and 5 key academic skills that we discussed on Wednesday to be readily available. They will be going out in a booklet, but for your reference we’ve included them here too.
- Be able to get dressed/changed for PE quickly
- Be responsible for own book bag and coat/jumper
- Be able to enter/exit the building without adult supervision
- Be able to tie shoelaces
- Be responsible for handing in homework weekly
- Be able to read, write and say the 2x 5x 10x tables
- Be able to read for a sustained 10 minutes – and talk about what they have read
- Be able to write a date and title, and use a ruler to underline
- Be able to write simple sentences with a full stop and a capital letter
- Neat, joined handwriting
Important News! Transition meeting for Year 2 parents

On Wednesday morning at 9.15am Miss Wendt and Mrs Roberts will be holding a meeting for allYear 2 parents.
As you already know, your children will be moving into Year 3 in September. In order to prepare your children for some changes in daily routine, we would like to meet with you to talk about the transition between Year 2 and 3, and what school will be doing to help your child.
We want to make the move to Year 3 as straightforward as possible; therefore we will be starting some of the transition processes after the half term holiday whilst your child is in Year 2.

Year2 are creating different items with recycled materials. They have been collecting ‘junk’ from home and are now going to design their own creation – will it be a new toy, a useful object, a place to store things?

We were looking at recycling different materials and it made us think about the clothes we wear. Can clothes be recycled? What do you think?
We decided they could – we looked at popular fashion from decades ago and saw some things that we would wear today! Have a look at our timeline and see if there are any items of clothing that look familiar!

Autumn is the perfect time of year for some art, and Andy Goldsworthy is the perfect source of inspiration…. first we explored his natural, temporary sculptures and then went outside to find materials for our own. More to follow!
