The Storm Whale in Winter

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 2:38pm

Our new story this half term is called 'The Storm Whale in Winter.' In this story a boy called Noi lives with his dad on an island and makes friends with a whale. One wintery day Noi's dad goes out fishing and doesn't return. Noi is brave and goes searching for his dad and his friend the whale comes back to help him.

Please visit the website below to watch a video of the story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPtet0D2zHc

We got a message in a bottle from Noi who left the story and his whale friend for us to look after. We have read the story and made models of the Storm Whale, we wrote some sentences about what Noi imagined would be under the sea and wrote some messages from dad or Noi.

Spring 1

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 2:26pm

Happy New Year!!

Welcome back into 2020!!! The children have come back to school with an enthusiastic attitide towards their learning, and they have grown a little taller aswell!!!

We have started the new half term with an amazing new story called 'The Storm Whale in Winter.' This story will lead the way into answering our question 'How do we get by with a little help from my friends?' In this theme we will be learning about friendship through our stories and we will also learn about animals that live under the sea.

We will also talk about friends that help us around school with a visit from a lunchtime supervisor, caretaker and first aider in school.

Our experience this half term will be a visit to the Blue Planet Aquarium in February, and we will also be celebrating Chinese New Year and Valentines Day. Watch out for more blogs on our class page for these events and experiences.

CC Launch

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 10:15am

Our new question for this half term is, "Why is Dina Asher-Smith famous?"

This might seem like a strange question to be asking, but it opens the door into considering sport - the Olympics in particular - and why this competition exists. We'll discover that it goes all the way back to the time of the Ancient Greeks, although it was very different back then to how it happens today!

To launch our new area of learning, we watched "Team GB Golden Moments" from the London 2012 Olympics (anyone remember "Super Saturday"?!), thinking about what we could see and how it made us feel watching it. We felt proud, emotional, inspired and amazed. Look it up on YouTube - do you feel the same as we did as you watch it?

We can't wait to explore the Ancient Greeks more, and have so many exciting opportunities for the children planned!

Art Exhibition

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 5:57am

2HR have created some beautiful artwork during the art lessons themed around The Great Fire of London. The children have throughly enjoyed designing their own Tudor Houses and then collating them together to create a class display where they have then added effective, colourful printing techniques that resemble the fire.

To celebrate and share the children's work we held an art exhibition as our end of topic experience!

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who attended the event. The children love sharing their learning with you and were very excited to teach you everything that they have learned about the topic The Great Fire of London.

NEW TOPIC! Where would you rather live: Manchester or Wuhan?

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 5:50am

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas break!

When 2HR returned back to school, we had a fantastic day launching our new topic about China! The children were very enthused to share what they already know about China and shared questions about what they would look to find out and explore further.

Part of the fun day was to create an environment where we felt like we were in China so we decided to create Chinese lanterns and decorate our classroom with them!

Battleships!!

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 10:33pm

We had great fun using co-ordinates in our maths lesson to play battleships!

Mythical Creatures

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:52pm

This half-term, year 5 are focusing on Greek Myths, and more specifically, Heracles. During our writing lessons, children will be planning and writing their own labour for Heracles to complete, based on their own Mythical Creature.

This week children have begun to plan their labour. First they were tasked with creating their own mythical creature. They began by sketching ideas in their art books. This later resulted in them creating charcoal drawings of their creature.

Today, they began to plan their story. It was important to consider what would make their monster difficult to defeat, and the children had wonderful ideas.

We can't wait to share their final story with you.

Our Bridge Experience

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:47pm

During our topic 'why does the world need great inventions?' year 5 created bridges with moving parts.

We then shared our bridges with Year 4, where they were able to pretend to be ships to test if our bridges created enough space for them to pass under! Year 5 were also tasked with explaining how they created their bridge, while using subject-specific vocabulary. Year 4 learnt a lot!

It was a wonderful experience, and all children involved loved sharing their amazing ideas.

Bridge Building!

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:43pm

A visitor visted Year 5, and taught them how to make these wonderful bridges! They used cardboard, screws, string, eyes and screw drivers to create their designs.

Each bridge was able to move, and they could carry a weight of 500g!

It took half a day for children to create their bridges. It was very exciting!

What do you think of Year 5's wonderful bridges?

Non-Chronological Reports (Part 3)

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:33pm

Our final non-chronological reports!

Non-Chronological Reports (Part 2)

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:32pm

I couldn't fit all of the wonderful non-chronological reports onto one blog!

Here are some more.

Non-Chronological Reports (Part 1)

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 8:27pm

Last half term, the children completed their own research on different inventions. These varied from Victorian inventions, such as the printing press, to more modern inventions such as video games.

They used their information to create non-chronological reports, which they then transferred to pic collage.

I know that I learnt some new facts from reading these, did you?

News reporters!

Date: 15th Jan 2020 @ 11:10am

We have been working hard all week as journalists writing our first drafts of a news report about the declaration of war by Neville Chamberlain in 1939. Proof reading our own writing is a very difficult skill but we have worked in pairs to support each other in the process and we found it very useful. Mrs Ranyard was really impressed with how we supported each other- Great teamwork!

"I found it much easier to read my work to Jonathan and to spot mistakes." Ahmad

"I was able to make sure my work was clearer to read." Stevie and Morgan

The Storm Whale in Winter

Date: 14th Jan 2020 @ 11:05am

This week in our literacy learning, we discovered a message in a bottle... It was from Noi! He told us to look out for his storm whale and kindly left a book to read! We have written lists, messages and dialogue in speech bubbles linked to the text!

Spring 1

Date: 14th Jan 2020 @ 10:56am

This half term in Reception, we are thinking about the question, 'How do I get by with a little help from my friends?' This week we have been talking about our best friends, drawing pictures and writing sentences about what our friends do to help us! Check out our new friendship display!

Up periscope!

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 10:05pm

We have been studying how light travels in our science topic and we have created some cool periscopes to demonstrate how light can change direction using mirrors. We had a lot of fun making them and camouflaging them so we could use them to look out of our "Anderson shelters" as part of our WWII topic! Check out our brilliant periscopes in action! Is it safe to come out yet?

Welcome to the history channel!

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 12:27pm

Good afternoon and welcome to the history channel.  This is 3RH reporting on The Stone Age!

Today we acted as reporters and archaeologists. We interviewed each other on a specialist subject to do with the Stone Age.

Stone Age research

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 12:23pm

We've been really interested in finding out about the Stone Age since coming back after Christmas! In particular, we have been looking at Stone Age houses/shelter, tools, hunting/gathering, cave paintings and clothes. Here are some pictures of us researching those topics.

Finding out about the Stone Age

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 12:08pm

In English, we are writing our own non-chronological reports about the Stone Age. We shared our expert knowledge with some reporters. They asked lots of interesting questions.

Biscuit Homes

Date: 13th Jan 2020 @ 11:37am

For the launch of our Stone Age topic we made Stone Age homes. We used biscuits to make the homes which was very tricky as the biscuits didn't balance.

Past and present tense verbs

Date: 10th Jan 2020 @ 3:20pm

Year 4 have been sorting past and present tense verbs from their Earthquake topic. They did a great job!

Year 6LK outstandings from week beginning 6-1-2020

Is a balloon alive?

Date: 10th Jan 2020 @ 8:11am

Have a look at the science problem below that 5HW are currently discussing. What do you think? How do you know if something is alive?

Biscuit Building!

Date: 10th Jan 2020 @ 8:05am

For our Connected Curriculum launch, we made Stone Age houses out of biscuits and icing sugar. It was lots of fun but also really tricky which made us admire how much hard work it must have taken to build houses back then without the bricks and materials we use today.
