Wellbeing challenge number 15

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 10:19am

Hi everyone and Happy Friday! I can't believe it's already the end of another week. I hope everyone is working hard and staying safe.

I got the idea for today's wellbeing challenge yesterday when I saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky. It was the brightest colours I've ever seen and I could see the whole arc. There was even a faint second rainbow next to it!

Photos don't really show how amazing it was but you can see how vivid the colours are:

The rainbow made me feel happy when I saw it and I thought it might make other people happy too! So today's challenge is to take a photo of something that makes you feel happy. You could find something in your house or do it on a walk. It could be a person, an animal, an object or even something that you've made. Anything that makes you feel happy or positive. If you don't have a camera, phone or tablet of your own then ask an adult if you can borrow theirs but please be careful with it!

If you'd like to share your happy photo then please e-mail it to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, I'd love to see it and then I can post some of them and spread the happiness around!

Have a good weekend,

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

Thanks to A who sent a photo of himself doing the breathing exercises I set yesterday, I hope they helped you feel nice and calm.

Friday Challenge

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:58am

Good morning Year 2,

I hope you are all excited for a well-deserved break this weekend. I know I am :)

English Challenge

It was brilliant to read some of your sentences yesterday. They were very imaginative! I did notice though, that many of you are forgetting to include adjectives in your work. Adjectives are a great way to make your sentences more interesting. Today I would like you to write 5 sentences about the objects below and don’t forget to describe the objects using adjectives:

Plant, bath, floor, clothes.

Here are my examples:

The tiny plant started to grow.

The large bath was filled with water and lots of white bubbles.

Jack spilled a fizzy drink on the dirty floor so Miss Hamer had to clean it up.

John always wears bright clothes so he stands out.

Maths Challenge

Give these word problems a go. I know you can do it!

My pencil is 12cm long. Tom’s pencil is 6cm longer. How long is Tom’s pencil?

Sara has 12 packets of crisps. She must share them equally between her four friends. How many crisp packets will each friend get?

Eggs come in boxes of 6. How many eggs would I have if I bought four boxes?

Miss Hamer

Friday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:36am

Can you believe another week has flown by and it’s Friday again! We’ve had some great pictures through this week of you all busy with your learning! We can’t wait to show you them on our celebration blog later!

Sentence of the day

All of yesterday’s sentence were all questions, so they all needed a question mark at the end of them. We know that they are questions because they are asking something and they have our special asking words at the start of the sentence.

Will lots of bugs come to the bug hotel?

Do you like bug hotels?

Why do the bugs like the bug hotel?

What is the bug hotel called?

Well done YuXiang and Kaya you managed to find them all! Brilliant detective work!

Here is today’s sentence. How can you describe the bug house and make it more interesting to read.

I have made a _________________bug hotel.

How many adjectives can you think of to describe the bug hotel?

Phonics

Put a timer on for a minute, how many ways can you think of to make the ee sound from yesterday. Write them down. If you still have some time left, think of some words that are spelt with the different ee graphemes.

ee                 ea                 e-e               ey                 y

Today’s phonics focusses on the igh sound family.

For today’s challenge I want you to make your own giant roll and read. You will need 6 rows all with 5 words on. A bit like this…

Your words need to have all of the igh sound family graphemes in them. Once you have written the words you can play! Maybe play against one of your family, who can read the most words? Or play on your own, time yourself and see if you can beat your time.

Remember there are also lots of phonics games on https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/ for you to play and practice your phonics skills.

Hope you all have a brilliant day. Don’t forget to check back on the blog later for our weekly celebration!

Try something new this weekend

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:03am

Happy Friday everyone!

How has your week been? As well as doing my school work, I decided to try some new activities this week; I went on some new bike rides and walks with my family, baked some new recipes and tried out some online dance courses. I really enjoyed them - especially eating the brownies, even though they didn't turn out quite as they were meant to !

Why don't you try doing something new this weekend and tell us all about it by emailing :

Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

We can't wait to hear all about it!

Have a great weekend.

Sentence of The Day

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:02am

Good morning year 6! Can you believe it is Friday already? Today’s sentence of the day is a short piece of dialogue to show characterisation and how to organise speech.

“I really do’nt like the look of this place Tom,” whispered Ahmet.   That strange symbol reminds of something I’ve seen before and it is giving me a bad feeling about this place.”

“Oh stop being a scaredy-cat as usual Ahmet; honestly we will be in and out as quick as a flash, once we get proof that we went in all of the rooms. Come on!” insisted Tom.

Can you find the two punctuation errors. One is a piece of punctuation that is in the wrong place and the other is a missing piece of speech punctuation.

I would also like you to look at the word ‘bad’ and see if you can use an improved word which still fits in with the sentence.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Write the next DAD sentences as they enter the house.

Describe what they see as soon as they enter.

Explain an action-how or what do the characters do?

Dialogue- What do they say to one another?

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 12

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:00am

Here is the next Chapter Syrah and the Sea. Spot my mistake at the start of the chapter!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=JUpTFZ2

Why do you think that no one could stop asking Ahmet questions even though Mrs Khan had specifically asked them not to?

Who are the ‘Messengers’? What is their job?

Why is Victor the worst Messenger? Use evidence from pages 134 and 135 to help you answer.

Had Brenden-the-Bully learned his lesson? Use page 136 to find evidence to support your answer.

Did the narrator of the story want to give Ahmet his Tintin book? If not why didn’t he just take it back?

When the narrator heard about Ahmet’s sister, his mother and his father he wanted to cry. Why did he have to stop himself?

What do you think might happen next to change everything?

Friday 1st May

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 8:34am

Happy Friday Year 5!

We're finally into May - which is a month I always look forward to - it's mine and Livvi's birthdays this month! (not for a couple of weeks yet, but I'm already planning Liv's birthday cake!)

We'd love to see what learning you get up to at home today, and remember to check back onto your class blog pages later to celebrate the fantastic work you've been doing this week!

So far both classes have 7 heart photographs! Let's keep that number rising everyone.

Good morning from Mrs Hodges!

The final Sentence of the Day for this week is based on a different YouTube video. I'd like you to have a watch of "Dessert in Space" - I think the chocolate pudding looks pretty good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwv6Hcn-0HY

Then here's today's sentence - check back later to see my purple pen!

Good afternoon everyone!

Here's the final corrected sentence for this week!

Hi from Miss Wendt!

I can't believe it is May already! Even with our very different circumstances at the moment, I feel the year is flying. This week in particular has gone very quick. I think what I've enjoyed the most is the number of children who are emailing the Y5 team - we have heard from lots of people this week, keep it up!

Here is the fluent in five for today:

Abass in 5HW made a request yesterday for some websites to visit for online learning (the kind of activities we sometimes use in class). I promised I would post the links today -

Maths answers for today!

Good morning from Miss Brookes!

It's May at last! This year seems to have gone very quickly, despite being stuck at home. Can you believe that we've been off school for the whole of April? It's such a strange feeling.

Yesterday we had children email us with a photograph of the work from the home learning pack that they were struggling with. That was a great way to reacting to the problem - if you come across any work that you find tricky, email us and let us know what work it is, and then one of us will reply with some advice, or maybe even create a 'showme' video explaining it to you - I did one for Ivory yesterday when she came across a maths problem that was challenging. The same goes for parents - we're happy to answer any questions you have about your child's learning. Email away! Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Now, onto today's GVP. Today's lesson is a recap of Monday-Wednesday (we're continuing with adverbs of possibility next week, so I haven't included it today). Can you remember the three key themes?

Please email us with the area you found the most challenging over these last two weeks, so we can focus on it next week.

Here's today show me video:

Friday's Maths!

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 7:28am

Hi everyone,

Let's start our day by singing a days of the week song (a different one today!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loINl3Ln6Ck

What day is it today? Thats right... It's Fantastic Friday! What day will it be tomorrow?

This week, in our Maths learning we have been ordering and sequencing events.

For today's challenge you will need a teddy or toy (doll)!

You are going to help one of your teddies or toys to get ready for bed, by talking through the order and sequence of what they need to do.

What do they need to do first? What do they need to do next?

Talk about all the things your toy needs to do before they go to bed – Have they brushed their teeth? Have they put on their night clothes? Can you read them a bedtime story?

Take a look at the picture below.

With your adult see if you can make a list of the sequence. You can help your teddy by drawing pictures and talking about the order, what comes first? What do they need to do next?

You could also have a go at this extra challenge this weekend too!

Extra challenge: Draw pictures of activities you do this weekend. Can you use the words first, next, after that and finally to describe the order of what you have done?

Amazing! Well done for all of your super work this week! Keep sending pictures of your learning to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

I hope you have a fantastic weekend! smiley

Friday 1st May - Phonics

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 7:11am

Good Morning Nursery...Happy Friday!

We have been very busy this week learning about rhyme and completeing lots of rhyming activities.

Today I would like you to play a game with me!

The game called 'I spy'.

CLICK HERE TO PLAY 'I SPY' GAME

Fantastic! I hope you were able to make a rhyming pair by matching my word with the picture that rhymed with it!

It would be great if you can have a go at playing this game at home with your grown up. You could draw some pictures or find some objects and ask your adult to play.

Your grown up can say 'I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with...(bat)'. Then you can find the picture or object that rhymes with their word (cat)!

I have also attached a rhythm and rhyme home learning challenge sheet for you to have a look at. See if you can complete some of these fun rhyming activities over the weekend too!

Have a great day!

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how you are getting along with the CC activity for this week. Look back through the blog if you missed it. Miss Thornton and I are completing a vocabulary course online and one of our tasks this week is to write up what we have understood so far and to use as many key words as possible… so we are having a little competition!  Here is a little challenge for you too… how many of the words below you can include in your writing – remember you can present your writing as you wish or maybe you could make a GLOSSARY of this key vocabulary instead.

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 11

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Here is Chapter 11 for you to follow today. I think the narrator of the story is like Felix from 'Once' in so many ways!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=k9oSlNI

Think about Chapter 12. Using the title as a clue, what do you think the next chapter will be about?

Will he get to ask Ahmet any more of his questions?

Do you think Brenden-the-Bully will play anymore tricks?

Wellbeing challenge number 14

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:02am

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed some relaxing colouring yesterday, here is a picture of mine. It isn't quite finished yet but I had a nice relaxing hour doing it last night:

Today's challenge is to do a mindfulness breathing activity. Mindfulness can help you relax and be in the moment, appreciating everything that's around you.

Just one breath

Find a relaxing place where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, either with your legs crossed or any comfortable posture. This activity can be done in as little as one minute, but you can also do it for longer periods of time.

Begin by setting a timer for one minute.

Start breathing deeply in and out. Notice how the breath feels as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Pay attention to any sensations that you notice or any sounds that you hear.

Take another slow deep breath and see if you can imagine how the breath moves down into the lungs and then back up again. Thank your body and breath for giving you life and keeping you healthy.

Take one more deep breath and hold the breath for a moment - then release it.

If any thoughts worry you, try and imagine your thoughts immersed in a white, puffy cloud and push the thought cloud out of your awareness.

Afterward, notice how you feel after taking this one-minute break.

If you want to tell me about your experience or send any photos of yourself doing the activity then e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.

There are more simple instructions below.

Julie and Ben were walking through High End park on Sunday when a fox jumped out of the bushes and chased them all the way back home to their house on Windmill Lane.

They all need a capital letter because they are proper nouns – they are the name of a person, thing or place and therefore need a capital letter.

Sentence of The Day

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 9:35am

Good morning year 6. I hope you enjoyed writing a DAD (description, action, dialogue) sentence yesterday and you noticed that I had misspelt fierce and apprehensive yesterday. I asked you also to see if you could improve the word 'walked'. You could have used stumbled or trudged

Today the sentence I am going to write is an action sentence using an expanded list and powerful vocabulary, making sure I keep the atmosphere needed for a spooky story.

Tom and Ahmet knew it was too late to turn back now!  A dare was a dare!

Cautiously, Tom lifted the old, tarnished gate latch; the gate swung open, forced by the wind that had whipped up a strange force around them, they both clung on to each other, trembling, as they made their way to the ancient, warped front door and both stopped simultaneously and stared at the strange, yet familiar, symbol right in the center.

Can you spot the spelling mistake?

I have also included a 5/6 spelling in my sentence can you find it?

What do you think the word simultaneously means?

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Can you add some dialogue? What might Tom say to Ahmet? What could he reply?

‘We create, We explore,

We care, We soar’
