DT weaving

Date: 1st Mar 2024 @ 7:52am

This week, we have begun exploring our enquiry question for this half term's history unit: When and why did the Saxons come to Britain?

We've completed some Anglo-Saxon inspired weaving. These were the design specifications:

  • Create and use a card loom.
  • Your loom must be A6 sized.
  • Your weft and warp must include at least 2 different colours.
  • The weft must be made from wool.
  • Each weft must be the same size.

Take a look at the results!

Spring 1 Week 7

Date: 16th Feb 2024 @ 4:20pm

And just like that, the half term is over and we are half way through the year!

This week, we finished editing and improving our non-chronological reports. The children were so knowledgeable and eager to share their learning.

We have also finished multiplying decimals by using our knowledge of place value and have briefly moved on to dividing decimals. I have been so impressed with their understanding of place value and how they can apply it to this type of question. It was a pleasure to teach it!

And we also enjoyed a visit from some Ancient Greeks! We had a full day with them which included a short play about Hades and Persephone, making some clay tiles and learning about the two city states of Athens and Sparta. Surprisingly, most children said they'd prefer to join Athens. We seem to have a class full of actors, philosophers and artists!

Wishing everyone a very enjoyable but restful week off!

'The great wave'-Paolo Terdich

Date: 16th Feb 2024 @ 1:16pm

4AK have had a fantastic learning journey in Spring 1, they are all so proud of their work and achievements. We've been working with Miss Mcaffer this week on some water inspired artwork. We took inspiration last week from 'The Great Wave'. This week, we were inspired by an artist named Paolo Terdich to create some oil pastel artwork and some sketching. Have a look at a few of the amazing pieces that we created.

Holiday homework and the spring 2 overview have been sent out today. Please continue to read and practice your times tables.

Have a great holiday!

What a busy final week of the half term. We've been working with Miss Mcaffer this week on some water inspired artwork. We took inspiration last week from 'The Great Wave'. This week, we were inspired by an artist named Paolo Terdich to create some oil pastel artwork and some sketching.

Take a look at our pictures on the attached document: you'll agree that it is simply amazing!

Holiday homework has been sent home today too so make sure you get creative!

Remember over half term to stay safe, responsible and respectful, even outside of school!

Aargh Pirates!

Date: 16th Feb 2024 @ 11:02am

This week the pirates visited our Nursery. They sailed in on a giant ship and brought treasure and books and clothes for us to learn with.
This morning we realised the pirates had taken all of their things back and they'd stolen our learning from the boards!
We think they've buried the treasure on a sandy desert island. Can you follow the the trail on our treasure maps to find the treasure? Two of the children even created a pirate treasure island in the fiddly fingers area.
Just before you look at the photos, why are pirates called pirates?
Because they arrghhhh! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mr Wolf's Pancakes

Date: 15th Feb 2024 @ 8:28am

This week, Reception read the story 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' by Jan Fearnley.

Just like Mr Wolf, we very carefully wrote our own shopping lists with all the ingredients we would need to make our perfect pancake! We designed out pancake and labelled the toppings we would like. We worked as a team to make the pancake batter smooth. We really enjoyed counting our Numicon to make sure we had enough to 'buy' the toppings for our pancakes! We tasted our pancakes at the end of the day and they were delicious!

Pirates Ahoy!

Date: 14th Feb 2024 @ 8:09pm

This week in Nursery they discovered a pirate ship in the outdoor area and a big jolly roger flag. The children were very curious as to how it ended up in our playground and had lots of questions to ask. This week we have been learning about under the sea and what animals live there and what a pirate does. The children have enjoyed role playing in the pirate ship and walking the plank. They have also had fun taking part in a floating and sinking challenge and creating their own pirate hats and flags.

A polite reminder that we are a nut free school. Please enure that you do not send your child to school with any snacks etc containing nuts of any kind or nut products in their packed lunch as we have some pupils with severe allergies.

Thank you for your understanding

Pancake Day Celebrations!

Date: 14th Feb 2024 @ 3:34pm

On Monday and Tuesday, we celebrated Pancake Day! We read the book Mr Wolf's Pancakes, wrote shopping lists, read our recipe, and designed our own special pancake. To top it all off, we made pancakes on Tuesday and ordered toppings from the Toppings Cafe with Numicon payment. Our class loves pancakes! Yummy!

Exploring wind direction!

Date: 10th Feb 2024 @ 7:21am

In science, we have been learning about weather patterns and seasonal changes. This week we have been meterologists! We created our own wind socks to explore the direction of the wind. First we decorated cardboard to make the sock and then we attached tissue paper to the base as a means to test the direction of the wind. We had so much fun going outside to test our wind socks and had the perfect windy day to find out about the direction of the wind. We questioned if the wind direction changes and which direction the wind is blowing. We found out that the wind was travelling in one direction to the west.

Dress to Impress!

Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 4:30pm

This week in school we have been celebrating and learning about Children's Mental Health Week. We discussed what mental health means and did some activities over the week. We started the week discussing what mental health means and how we can have a good mental health. We discussed this year's theme 'My Voice matters' and what words or phrases we can use to help us talk and share our views.

We completed an activity where we were thinking about what makes us happy. At the end of the week we came to school dressed to express ourselves and did lots of mindfulness and yoga.

Dress to express day

Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 2:54pm

Today in Nursery, we celebrated children's mental health week by holding a 'dress to impress day'. The children were invited to come into school in something that expresses them. The children came dressed in their favourite clothes or national dress. In our circle time, they talked about the things that they like and their favourite food/toys and the clothes that they were wearing. They also learnt the makaton sign for 'favourite'.

Get Well Soon King Charles!

Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 2:43pm

This week, we heard the sad news that King Charles has not been very well.

We know that King Charles likes to look at wild flowers. We researched different wild flowers and chose our favourite. Next, we drew a picture of it and cut it out to add to our class 'Get Well Soon' card.

Miss Wilkinson bought a stamp, and she is going to post it to Buckingham Palace after school.

Magical maths!

Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 1:54pm

What a wonderful week of learning! Faizan says, "This week, we have been learning about fractions!".

Jahmai explained, "A non-unit fraction has a numerator which is not 1."

Isla said, "Unit fractions can only have a numerator which is 1."

Parker said, "We began the week by learning about unit fractions, and today we have learnt about non-unit fractions."

"For unit and non-unit fractions, they can have different denominator. The denominator is how many parts a whole has been split into."

"In our maths lessons, we have been learning about parts and wholes," explained Rayyan.

Natalie explained, "The numerator is the number on the top, which shows me how many parts I have, and the denominator tells me how many parts the whole unit has been split into."

Jaxson summarised this by saying, "the bigger the denominator, the smaller the part."

We are meteorologists!!

Date: 8th Feb 2024 @ 7:33pm

This term in science we have been looking at seasonal changes including weather. This week we learnt about different tools that can be used to measure weather. We discovered the job of a meteorologist and decided to make some wind socks and measure the direction the wind was blowing on Wednesday afternoon.

We worked really hard to create the wind socks and tested them out in the reception playground. We could see the direction the wind was blowing because the strips of coloured paper was flying in that direction.💨

Reception is a Team!

Date: 8th Feb 2024 @ 2:31pm

For RE this week, we talked about what it means to be a good team. Some ideas we came up with were: helping others, being friends, using nice words, and saying sorry. In line with Mental Health Awareness Day on Friday, we made a new banner to celebrate our good teamwork!

Goodbye Miss Rawling

Date: 5th Feb 2024 @ 8:23pm

Today we said goodbye to Miss Rawling who has been working in 6JT for over 13 weeks. We have loved having you in our class and wish you all the best for your future.

Old Games!

Date: 4th Feb 2024 @ 7:10am

On Friday for our topic work we learning about asking and answering questions. The classroom was set up with lots of old games that we had not seen before! This prompted us to question: how they were played? what were the rules? How do you set the game up? How do you win? What are the pieces for? We had lots of fun learning how to play the games and afterwards we expert players. We played marbles, Jacks, Shut the box, Pick up sticks and dominoes! Afterwards we were able to answer the questions and explain how to play all the old games. We also created a class block graph to find out which was our favourite old game.

Amazing Aquarium Artwork!

Date: 2nd Feb 2024 @ 4:04pm

This week, as artists, we have been working really hard to create our own pictures of fantastic fish and super sea creatures!

Firstly, we wrote lists detailing the different sea creatures we saw after our visit to Sealife. Next, we looked closely at the details of the animals using information texts from our class library.

I think the children have done a FABULOUS job, have a look at some of our work below!

Thematic Kites

Date: 2nd Feb 2024 @ 3:36pm

We started a new book this week in reception titled "Somebody Swallowed Stanley" about a plastic bag that is left in the ocean and swallowed by various sea creatures. At the end of the story, the plastic bag is reused by a kind boy into a kite. We made our very own Stanley kites like the boy in the story and took them outside to give them a try!

A reply from Mrs Hughes...

Date: 2nd Feb 2024 @ 1:56pm

What a busy week! This week, Mrs Hughes wrote a letter in response to our letters, whereby we asked to either keep the mysterious egg that we found in the playground, or to get rid of it. Fortunately or unfortunately, for some people, Mrs Hughes decided that it would not be safe to keep the egg so Mr Jones took it to a special unit at Chester zoo. Have a look at her letter which is attached to this post.

Halving Numbers

Date: 2nd Feb 2024 @ 11:55am

This week in maths we have been exploring halving numbers. We used counters and bar models to represent a number and then explored halving the counters into two equal groups.

Threadbear has found his owner!!!

Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 10:23pm

A few weeks ago we found Threadbear in our classroom. We decided to write some 'Found' posters that would describe him really well and put them up in some trams. We hoped the owner of Threadbear would read these posters and would be reunited with them. Today we received a video message from the little girl who read our posters on the tram and rang the number to get Threadbear back to her.

Phew! It's a good job Threadbear has been found again!!!

Hooray for Fish!

Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 4:05pm

This week in maths, Nursery have been sorting, matching and comaparing lots of different fish using their knowledge of size, pattern, colour and shape. Please see the pictures below to see how they sorted the different fish. Can you notice how they have grouped them?

If you would like to read the story the children have been using for their maths learning at home. Please click on the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C2vlVHVnes

Fabulous Addition and Research Skills!

Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 2:33pm

This week, year 3 have been working extremely hard in their maths, reading and writing lessons.

We begun the week by completing our instructions on how to wash a woolly mammoth. Now we are confident on washing any large animal! We have then begun to complete some research for our next writing challenge - a non-chronological report on the Stone Age. We thought about all of the facts we have learnt this term, and then used different non-fiction books to find evidence to prove if our facts were true or not.

In maths, we have continued exploring addition. We begun the week by learning how to add 3-digit numbers through the method of redistribution. This was challenging at first, but we persevered until we felt confident. We have now moved on to learning about column addition. We have used our base 10 resources to help us, and have learnt the mathematical names for the different parts of addition number sentences (addend + addend = sum).

We are Artists part 2!!!

Date: 30th Jan 2024 @ 8:24pm

This week we had our second art lesson with Mrs McAffer on Tuesday. We built on the skills of drawing and mark making by creating some backgrounds for our toy pictures that we created last week. We worked in four small groups to create four backgrpound settings - space, forest, city and under the sea.

We started by sharing ideas about what we can find in each setting on post it notes. Then we used our drawing skills to draw the different objects that would be found in each setting. We included some of the mark making skills such as hatching, cross-hatching and dots to fill in the shapes in the drawings. Finally we used oil pastels to colour in each setting. Each setting looked so affective and they will be used for a display in the KS1 shared area and in the classroom.
