Pulling our socks up to say YES to choosing respect!

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:17pm

This week is national Anti-Bullying Week!  The theme this year is 'Choose Respect' and we started the week off in style by wearing odd socks. We wanted to celebrate our differences and remind ourselves that it's great to celebrate that we are unique.  We all want to show each other respect, no matter who we are. Look out this week for more on what this means in your class work and future assemblies.

Partitioning

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:15pm

We have been partitioning numbers! This means splitting numbers up. We used our part whole model.

First we made our whole number. Then we split this number into two parts. We had to say our number sentence before we wrote it down.

Mayan day!

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:04pm

Year 4 were lucky enough to receive a visit from a Mayan man! Big Nose was head-to-toe in traditional Mayan dress with a magnificent headdress to show his importance in his community. He brought raw cacao for us to try and helped us to create drama performances about Mayan culture.

What an amazing day!

Mayan clay tiles

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:01pm

In October the children had the opportunity to work with the school artist to create a Mayan Glyph clay tile. They had to use clay and layer to create the effect of a tile. The outcome was really effective.

This term year four are learning about earthquakes and their effect on people. To launch the topic children were 'transported' to an earthquake zone where they 'woke' to find a broken plate on the floor.  The children generated some fantastic questions about what they would do in the situation.  'Find cover under a table' 'Get outside' 'shout for help'

The headdresses were drawn onto card and coloured in using oil pastels before being cut out.

We will remember them

Date: 13th Nov 2018 @ 9:17pm

On Friday we remembered all of the soilders that have faught for us and helped to keep us safe. We created lots of beautiful poppies using different skills; painting, collage, printing and colouring. At 11 o clock we took part in a two minute scilence in our outdoor area and the children were fantastic!

Have a look at the beautiful display that the EYFS children created.

We made canopic jars!

Date: 13th Nov 2018 @ 3:57pm

We made some fantastic canopic jars! These were used by the ancient Egyptians for the safekeeping of particular human organs: the stomach, intestines, lungs, and liver, all of which, it was believed, would be needed in the afterlife. There was no jar for the heart: the Egyptians believed it to be the seat of the soul, and so it was left inside the body.

Ancient Egypt

In Autumn 1, Year 3 learned all about Ancient Egypt. For our launch, we explored a tomb and found out how the Egyptians mummify their dead. We even turned our friends into mummies, explaining what we were doing and why!

Year 1 have been investigating all of the different ways we can make a number - We now know that these are called number bonds. We have been experimenting using different strategies to find the number bonds. We have really enjoyed experiementing with bead strings and numicon. We are now more confident writing our number sentences and some of us are even challenging ourselves to write them in different ways, for example, 3+4=7 and 7=3+4.

Victorian Inventions Day!

Date: 12th Nov 2018 @ 3:51pm

Our theme this term is "Why are bridges built in different ways?"...you'd be forgiven for wondering why on earth we have had a Victorian Inventions day!

Did you know that as the Industrial Revolution took its course, the Victorians developed Britain's road and rail networks like no one ever had before? We'll be exploring some of the amazing ways they built bridges to enable goods to be transported from one part of the country to another, crossing great expanses of water. We'll especially be focusing on finding out how the Victorians built Tower Bridge, where they had to find a way to build in water so that traffic could cross the Thames yet still allow cargo ships to pass underneath.

To lead us into this, we explored some of the other amazing inventions of the Victorian era, such as Morse Code and Steam Trains. We even had our photograph taken with a real 1836 camera lens; we had to stay VERY still so that our photo wouldn't become all blurry! See a sneak peak of Mrs Hodges trying to 'look Victorian' below!

Mayan Masks

Date: 12th Nov 2018 @ 2:55pm

In October we had the opportunity to make our Mayan Masks with our school art teacher. We worked really hard to ensure that they had the correct detail. We used oil pastels to colour them. We were really pleased with the end reuslt. The mask being held up below would have been like a mask used in a Mayan festival.

Times Tables

This year at Ravensbury we are thinking about developing our times tables. We will be practicing our tables in a variety of different ways. One of the ways we can practice is by using a range of online games and activities.

Click on the links below to practice! All of the activities work on a laptop, some may not work on a tablet.

In Year 3, we focus on the 3,4 and 8 times tables along with revisiting the 1,2,5,and 10 times tables.
