Can 5HW find their anchor?

Date: 7th Feb 2020 @ 3:56pm

Mrs Ganner held an assembly this morning, where she set a challenge for children to 'find their anchor'. This involved learning some mindfulness strategies for breathing - which will help us focus and remain calm.

Clay Relief Tiles

As part of our connected-curriculum, 'Why is Dina Asher-Smith famous?' , Year 5 have been learning about Ancient Greece and the Olympics. Using our knowledge of Ancient Greece, we learnt that the Greeks used clay to make different types of tiles and pottery.

We combined our knowledge of Greek design, and the Ancient Olympics, to create our own relief tiles, depicting an Olympic Sport.

We can't wait to show you our final designs in our class assembly on Friday!

Inside Out Day!

Date: 7th Feb 2020 @ 11:47am

Yesterday, Ravensbury celebrated 'inside out day.' We all wore an item of clothing inside out, to remind everyone that even if we look great on the outside, we may not feel great on the inside.

Inside Out Day - February 6th, 2020

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 6:27pm

We have been listening to stories and singing songs about feelings since we started in Nursery. It's important to know how to recognise the feelings we experience.

As part of Children's Mental Health Week, we came to school today dressed with our clothes inside out! Inside Out Day is a day where we learn to talk about our feelings. To stay healthy we know that we need to care for our minds as well as our bodies.

We played a game rolling emotions balls to each other and saying when we felt those emotions. Then we created our own emojis and emotions faces to create a display in class. Our teachers wrote what we said on the speech bubbles next to the emotions faces. Then we chose some of our favourite activities to play with in class. " I love this! I'm just so happy" said one of the children as they played together.

Can you guess what emotions we were learning about? Our teachers haven't put the emotion word cards on our display yet. Come in to class to see what they are tomorrow if you can't work it out from the faces we drew.

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 3:50pm

We celebrated Children's Mental Health Week by wearing our own clothes Inside Out!! We listened to the story 'The Lion Inside' and discussed the word 'Brave.' We talked about things that we have done that made us feel scared but after doing it made us feel brave.

Blue Planet Aquarium Visit

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 2:48pm

On Wednesday 5th February we went to the Blue Planet Aquarium. We had a fantastic time looking at all the animals that live under the sea and learnt lots of new facts about some of the animals. Did you know that an octopus has 9 brains, one in each tentacle and 3 hearts that helps it to stay alive...!!! We watched some divers feeding the rays and swimming with the sharks. This was a little scary!! It was an amazing day!!

Thank you to the wonderful parents who came along and helped on the day.

Blue Planet Aquarium Trip!

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 1:37pm

This week in Reception, we went on a trip to Blue Planet Aquarium! Children had a fantastic time visiting the aquarium and exploring all different kinds of sea creatures! We even had the opportunity to watch an underwater scubadiving show, where we were able to meet the divers and see the sand tiger sharks have their lunch! We ended the day with a walk through the incredible underwater tunnel! As you can see below, children were exhausted after a day of such fun!

Take a look through our pictures from Blue Planet in the video below!

Magnificent Myths!

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 11:14am

We have spent some time writing a new labour for Heracles this half term - the children each invented a mythical creature, and created a story around Heracles and their fearsome monster. The final versions of their myths were absolutely wonderful to read, and each and every child worked incredibly hard to write with imagination and detail.

Our trip to Southport Eco Centre!

Date: 6th Feb 2020 @ 11:00am

I would like to say well done to everybody in both 3RH and 3LF for their FANTASTIC behaviour throughout the whole day. Darren and Julie were so impressed with Ravensbury and commented on how well behaved and amazing you all were!

Exploring China

Date: 4th Feb 2020 @ 10:09am

This week in writing, 2HR are exploring China to learn about the famous landmarks and culture. Each day we are pretending to visit a place or take part in an activity to experience the Chinese cultures. Next week we will use these experiences to write a postcard for our Big Write.

On Monday we pretended to visit The Great Wall of China and learned lots of interesting facts about it. In groups, we then constructed our own Great Wall of China using modelling bricks. Afterwards the groups of children presented their models to the class with interesting facts that they had learned during the lesson. The children throughly enjoyed building their Great Walls of China!

On Tuesday we researched information about The Terracotta Army. We found out some amazing facts and created a life-sized Terracotta Warrior to display all the facts that we had found out!

"It took 7000 people to make the warriors!" James

"There were 8000 warriors made in total" Dawood

On Wednesday the class explored the city of Shanghai. We learned about the famous landmarks, things to do and see. We pretended to be tourists taking photos of what we saw on the Ipads, then used them to create a picture collage.

On Thursday we role-played a eating food in a Chinese restaurant and we tasted some Chinese foods such as spring rolls, sweet and sour sauce and blackbean sauce. We challenged ourselves to eat with chopsticks and discussed the flavours of the foods. The children throughly enjoyed sampling the foods and some even said they would want to go to a real restaurant regualrly to eat Chinese food.

Chinese New Year Class Assembly

Date: 4th Feb 2020 @ 9:57am

2HR delivered a brilliant performance to the school and their parents last Friday. They performed 'The Great Race' story to explain how the Chinese calendar began, shared a presentation of how Chinese New Year is celebrated and even performed a Chinese Dragon dance!

Terracotta Army

Date: 4th Feb 2020 @ 9:51am

In year two this week we have been learning all about the Terracotta Army.

The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang was afraid of death so decided to build an army of warriors to protect him in the afterlife. The Terracotta Army was built thousands of years ago but in 1974 farmers discovered one of the warriors when they were trying to dig a well.

Today the Terracotta Army is visited by lots of people. We decided to make our own Terracotta Army in our classroom!

CC - The Tudors!

Date: 3rd Feb 2020 @ 9:39pm

4JB have been enjoying learning about the Tudors in Connected Curriculum this term!

Last week we learnt about the six wives of Henry VIII, and compared the different lifestyles of rich and poor Tudor people.

The Great Wall Of China

Date: 3rd Feb 2020 @ 2:16pm

This week we have been learning all about the Great Wall Of China. Did you know that the Great Wall Of China was built over 2000 years ago? Prisoners and slaves were made to build the wall as a punishment! It took over 1000 years to build.

We had a go at building the Great Wall Of China ourselves. Luckily it didn’t take us over 1000 years and wasn’t a punishment, it was actually quite fun!

Snowballs!

Date: 3rd Feb 2020 @ 1:39pm

Today in our reading lesson, we started our new book called 'The birth of the Gods.'

Before we began our reading journey, we shared our predicitons on how the Gods were born. Year 5 were very excited to do this with snowballs! They wrote their ideas down on a scrap piece of paper, scrunched them into a ball, and then threw them at Miss Brookes!

We unravelled our snowballs, and shared our ideas. Some of us guessed correctly! The Gods were created by Gaia and Uranus, who were the Earth and the Sky.

Lost in the toy museum

Date: 2nd Feb 2020 @ 6:29pm

This week we have been reading the story 'lost in the toy museum'. The director of toys has sent us a letter to ask for our help, all of his toys are lost and he needs to keep a register to make sure all of the toys are up and ready for the museum visitors in the morning.

This week we have been adding the toys together as well as subtracting the toys to see how many are left. We have been using tens frames, bead strings and part whole models to help us become faster and more confident when adding and subtracting.

Recount

Date: 31st Jan 2020 @ 11:06pm

We are learning how to write a recount in our English lessons. Our recount is to tell people all about what we did during our Chinese workshop. We looked at a WAGOLL - what a good one looks like and decided together what our steps to success would be.

We said that we would need:

  • write in order
  • use time connectives - first, next, then, after that, during, soon after, finally
  • use conjunctions
  • write in the past tense
  • add opinion and feelings
  • capital letters for names of people and places

I can't wait to read them!
