Our blogs

**PLEASE READ 5HW** From Miss Wendt

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 3:33pm

Hello 5HW!

How are you all doing? The past few days have been very strange not being in school, I love our afternoons together with Miss Gallery, so it has seemed very weird not to be there.

I want you all to know that just because I’m not in school doesn’t mean that I am poorly. What I am doing is being very sensible, taking the advice of doctors (and Mrs Hughes!) and staying away to protect myself and others. You might hear the words social distancing in the news. This is what it means, although it doesn’t feel very social at the moment. There are lots of people who are having to do the same.

This is a really strange time for us all. In my lifetime (and you know how old I am!) I have never experienced anything like this before. And just like you probably do, I have lots of questions. Not all of those questions have answers at the moment. But that’s ok, scientists all over the world are trying to find those answers out for us.

What I want you to know is this; I am immensely proud of all of you this year. You have worked so hard to achieve so much. Mrs Hodges and I haven’t made it easy, but you have risen to every challenge we’ve thrown at you. And you will rise to this one.

So, you all know how much I love it when you bring in things from home to show me. Well 5HW, here’s a big challenge for you! I’m going to be putting something on the blog every single day for you to look at. It might be maths, science or even Spanish (you know how much me and Miss Gallery love our Spanish lessons!). It might even be a picture or a little video clip – although any videos will likely feature Katy or Toulouse as you know I don’t like having my picture taken! But what is important is that we will not lose touch. I’m here for you, even if I’m sat in my house working in my comfy pants with crazy hair!

Our year 5 email is y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk – I’ll be checking it every day and I promise I will respond to your emails.

I’ve been thinking about all the things I will miss over the next few weeks and I honestly think I could go on forever! But I’ve narrowed it down to 10, if anyone wants to add to the list – then email me and we can add them. We can look at this the next time we are together, and it will remind us of the fun we have!

10. Asking for extra time to ask me and Miss Gallery random questions about everything!

9. How much you all love learning Spanish

8. The number of people who are desperate to take the register to the office

7. The interest and excitement you show when learning something new in maths

6. The fact you never let me forget anything (which I have to admit, does come in handy!)

5. Our daily “where in the world is Miss Wendt?” chat when my screensaver changes

4. The fact that you all love Lego and art (my favourite things when I was 10)

3. The beautiful pictures you draw for me – and that so many of you use techniques I taught you in art club

2. Your kindness to others (including me, Mrs Hodges and Miss Gallery) when they are feeling down

And perhaps, the most important one of all…

1. Shayaan, Ini, Waled, Yousef, Abass, Kyro, Deacon, Zsolt, Phoebe, Daniel, Alissia, Rayane, Znaiya, Ryley, Lilly-Anne, Ellie, Paul, Ganesa, Siara, Paige, Eileena, Maddison, Yoel, Taissia, Fontoh, Aden, Mert-Deniz, Israel, Rhianna, Lucas

Take care everyone, remember to listen to your adults – they only want you to be safe and healthy – and we’ll see each other very soon.

Love

Miss Wendt x

P.S: Wash your hands!

A message from our teachers

Today has been very emotional. We know that you might be feeling like that too so we thought we'd share a few thoughts with you. Things will be different for a while but we will still be able to do lots of the things we love if you watch our blog.

The children have decided they would like you to join in with our favourite stories and practice drawing and share some of our favourite songs and videos over the coming weeks on this blog. Check back every day to see what we are putting up on the blog to help you practice at home.

Rainbows to make you smile

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 2:06pm

We talked today about how rainbows make us feel happy when we see them. We know that sometimes people can feel sad or angry or lonely and we decided that if we felt like that we would look out of our windows to see if we could see a rainbow.

The children then painted or coloured a rainbow to take home with them and put in their window, to spread happy smiles around Clayton.

We love to sing and dance and play

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 2:01pm

This morning we started our day as usual, waking ourselves up by being active to a Go Noodle song. You can find instructions in the home learning pack to show you how to join in the active fun with a few of our favourite songs and dances. Remember the Flow Channel to help calm your mind too.

We've also enjoyed spending time together playing in our favourite places today at school.

A message from us!

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 1:57pm

Although we are closing reception for the time being, we have not let our last day in reception be one to forget! The children have had a fun-filled day making rainbows to place in their windows at home, with the message to spread joy and make others around them smile!

Please refer to our blog/school email, receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk for daily teaching and learning updates! And please feel free to contact us if you have any queries, we would also LOVE to see pictures of the children learning at home! For now, here's a message from us....

Goodbye for now!!!

Hello Reception!

In everyone's home learning packs you will find a personal letter from me and Mrs Cooper. A copy of it is also attached on this blog. It has been quite emotional to write but we hope you all stay safe and send us loads of photos using the school email or Twitter account.

Sing a Rainbow...

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 12:19pm

In Reception we have made some rainbows to put on our windows at home. Hopefully when people walk past and look at the beautiful rainbows it will make them smile!!!!

We want everyone to smile whilst they are having some time at home!!!

A letter to the wonderful 5CB children :)

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 11:08am

Hi everyone!

To begin with, I just want to say how sorry I am that I have been unable to be there with you these past couple of days,  unfortunately it was out of my control and I have hated every second of being away from you all.

I know that this is a difficult time, and you must all have a thousand questions – I wish I was there to answer them. However, I am immensely proud of the work you have put in these past few days (even if you are still quite loud!) I’ve received a glowing report from Mrs Turner and Miss Harris, so well done!

The next few weeks are going to be tricky, and I’m not sure when we will be back in school to talk about it all again. However, I want you to continue to work hard and try not to worry. I know a lot of you are worriers – and if this was something, I thought you should worry about, I would tell you (you know I would). So instead of worrying, I want you to distract yourselves.

While I’ve been sat home (very bored! My copy of Harry Potter is still on my desk at school ☹ ) I’ve been preparing all of the tasks in your home learning pack. One of the best ‘stop yourself from worrying’ tool in there, is the mindfulness worksheets.  If you’re feeling stressed or concerned, I want you to complete some of those activities. I would also love for you to draw me some pictures, and keep them somewhere safe until we are back in school.

The next thing I want you to do, is check our class blog every day. I am going to do my best to post a video each day. I will post some lessons on the different worksheets you have – in case you are stuck or can’t remember how to work something out – and I will post some mindfulness and wellbeing tips, to keep you focussed (I’ve even left a video on there for you now).

The last thing I want to say, is thank you. I am hopeful that I will get to teach you again, but on the off chance that doesn’t happen, I want to let you know what a wonderful time I have had this year. You’re the very first class I have been able to teach from September (rather than from in the middle of the year!) and even though we have had our ups, downs, and headaches, I have loved every second of it.

From forcing you to love Harry Potter, and taking our selfie’s when we dress up, to getting frustrated at your tiktok dances (for the last time, I’m not a vsco girl!) I have had a blast. You are a funny bunch, and I can’t wait to hear from you again.

Thank you, and stay strong.

Thinking of you all,

Miss Brookes.

Please get in touch on our year 5 email address!

Mother's Day

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 10:45am

The reception children have been busy making cards and practising hard all week to sing their mummies  a Mother's Day song! Please see the videos below! Have a lovely day!

Letter to my lovely Year 3's - PLEASE READ**

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 8:45am

Hello my lovely Year 3 children!!! Miss Humphreys here.

I’m writing this letter to you because unfortunately, I can’t be in school with you at the moment but I want you to know that I am not off because I am sick or poorly, I am absolutely fine and you will be too so nobody should be worrying! :)

I’m sorry I’ve not been there with you when it’s been a bit of an unclear time. I’m missing you all so much and wish I could be there with you.

You’re about to have a confusing and unusual few weeks where you might not have to come to school but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue your learning at home. I am SO proud of all the hard work you’ve put in this year so far and I want that to continue.

As you know, I am always SUPER impressed when you come in to school and show me the work you have done at home… I want that to continue!!! In fact, I am going to be so happy if you are able to show me your work that you’ve completed over the next few weeks by sending it in emails to  y3homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.

There may even be some prizes involved!!! This email address is set up for you or your adult to ask me any questions you might have on some of the work you have to complete whilst you’re at home.

Make sure you keep your eye on our class blog on the school website. I will be uploading lots of things on to it including activities like Sentence of the Day. There are loads of websites that you can visit online like hit the button, TT Rockstars (remember, we’re still trying to beat Miss Faragher’s class!!!) and top marks. For a little bit of fun, remember to visit GoNoodle or Just Dance on YouTube to keep your bodies fit and healthy!

We’ve had a few chats in class about what is going on in the world right now and for that reason, I’m not sure for definite when we will be back into our classroom. I hope it is soon because I am bored at home without you crazy lot making me laugh.

Can’t wait to see you all as soon as possible! Stay safe, remember to listen to your adults at home and just keep washing your hands in the same way we have been doing at school.

Love

Miss Humphreys

Celebrating Science!

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 8:36am

Miss Wendt here, hope everyone is doing well and staying safe smiley

I thought it might be a good opportunity to show off some amazing work in science. Science is one of 5HW's favourite subjects, we love to predict, investigate and learn. Have a look at the life cycles and plant diagrams created by Ellie, Taissia, Alissia, Paige and Ganesa!

See you soon!

Hi Everyone!

Date: 19th Mar 2020 @ 7:19pm

I hope you are all doing well, and I'm so sorry I haven't been there.

Please see the attached video.

Resilience Drama Workshop

Date: 18th Mar 2020 @ 3:11pm

Well, if there's ever a time for us to be talking about resilience, this is surely it!

The children created a fabulous drama today, about a tree which - despite adversity - kept on growing into its fulness and strength.

We talked about the challenges we might face in our own lives, and how we can keep on growing in the face of these challenges too.

Check out our video clip to see some of our drama!

Irregular plurals

Date: 17th Mar 2020 @ 11:15am

Learning the words for all the irregular plurals in English can be tricky, so in Y5 we have divised a game to help us practise . It was so much fun to play and  by the end of the game we could remember all the plurals !

Manchester Airport

Date: 17th Mar 2020 @ 6:07am

The children had a fantastic time visiting the airport. They watched the planes take off and land and 'had a go' at sketching the planes that they could see. They were very lucky because they got to see the Emirates A380 plane land. The children were given a tour around the visitors park and got to touch, go inside and visit the cockpit of a plane. They were given the opportunity to 'dress up' in role as pilots, firefighters, police officers and flight attendants and act out the roles of the diffferent people who work at the airport. They got to look at and stand next to Concorde and found out lots of information about the plane. The children really enjoyed the trip and have asked to go back. If you would like to visit the visitors park with your family then you can find out more information about it  if you follow this link. https://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/at-the-airport/attractions/ . They do have an Easter Egg hunt and Flight Cadet Academy planned for the Easter holidays!

Sport Relief

Date: 15th Mar 2020 @ 12:28pm

On Friday 13th March, our classroom turned into a sea of red!! We came to school dressed in something red to raise money and join in a Dance-a-thon for Sport Relief.

In the class we took turns to be responsible for a buzzer. As soon as the buzzer was heard we stopped what we were doing and danced along to the Crazy Frog song. It was lots of fun!!!

We played mini football using our fingers, designed new kits and we did some sport colouring.

Superstars!

Date: 14th Mar 2020 @ 12:02pm

Wow! I am so proud of 2CC for their brilliant class assembly! You went home and practiced your lines as soon as I gave them to you and put on a wonderful assembly. I don't know about you but I've had the continents song stuck in my head ever since! Well done 2CC you are all my behaviour stars!

Peace Museum Workshop

Date: 13th Mar 2020 @ 6:02pm

Today, 5HW took part in an amazing workshop, let by Jude from The Peace Museum in Bradford. It really gave us a chance to think about war and why people make the choice to join the armed forces. We looked closely at the lives of two brothers during WWI, and how decisions they made impacted the lives around them.

Sports Relief!

Date: 13th Mar 2020 @ 5:13pm

To celebrate sports relief this year, Miss Brookes and Mrs Ranyard organised a dance-a-thon!

We all came to school wearing red, and throughout the day there had to be one class dancing at all times. 2HR danced their way up to our classroom, where we began our 30 minute dance session!

We were absolutely exhausted and ready for dinner by the end of it.

Science Week!

Date: 13th Mar 2020 @ 5:11pm

To celebrate science week, Year 5 have begun an experiment all about growing mushrooms.

The question we are focussing on is: 'Does the species of mushroom affect its rate of growth?'

We have now planted brown, white and oyster mushrooms - and are very excited to see them grow!

7 of us think the brown mushrooms will grow first.

21 of us think the white mushrooms will grow first.

3 of us think the oyster mushrooms will grow first.

We just need to remember to check if the soil is moist each day!

Workshops Galore!

Date: 13th Mar 2020 @ 5:08pm

It has been a very exciting week for year 5!

Not only were we fortuante enough to participate in one workshop, we were fortunate enough to participate in two!

On Monday we enjoyed a NSPCC workshop, where we learnt about what we can do if we need advice, and where to go if we ever need help and support.

On Friday, we enjoyed a Prevent workshop. We discussed war, and the reasons people choose to join the army or not. We then debated our own views - if we felt we'd rather stay at home (because if no one went to war, there would be no one to fight), or if we would join the soldiers (to protect our homes). Some of us were stuck in the middle and decided that we would stay home, but be prepared to defend our country if our towns/cities were invaded.

What is your favourite memory from this week?

ROMAN ADVENTURE!!

Date: 13th Mar 2020 @ 4:46pm

Wow! What an amazing day we have had at the Dewa Roman Experience, Chester!!! Here are just SOME pictures of us on a Roman march with our shields, our tour of the excavation sites inside and us playing with the memorabilia. Well done to everybody for showing our excellent Ravensbury behaviour and thank you for all our parent helpers! We had a fantastic day!
