Year 6DL: Blog items

Sentence of the Day

Date: 31st Mar 2020 @ 11:26am

Good morning year 6, today our sentence of the day will be a little bit different. What I would like you to do is to look at how I have written a list using a colon to start it and have written expanded sentences in the list which I have separated using semi colons- a very tricky type of sentence to write.

I want you to use mine as an example and try writing one of your own. You can use the same information I have used but put it in a different order or you can think of your own ideas.

Particularly over the past few days, I have noticed that, as a household, we could be contributing more to looking after our planet and doing our bit: recycling more, reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill; using less electricity by switching off lights in rooms that are not occupied; switching to at least one plant-based meal per week, such as using a meat alternative like Quorn; and reducing the amount of water wasted daily, by not keeping the tap running whilst cleaning our teeth or choosing to have a quick shower rather than a bath.

I have also pinked lots of good features included in this super sentence- can you spot them all?

Please send your own versions to the blog or our email

y6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

or Tweet your sentence or a picture of it on our year 6 Twitter account

Wellbeing challenge number 3

Date: 31st Mar 2020 @ 10:45am

Hello everyone!

Today's challenge is something that I often enjoy doing when I'm feeling a little sad or worried about something.

Today I am challenging you to cook or bake something! If you can't do it today then why not plan something to make later in the week or even at the weekend?

Take a look at this website that has plenty of easy and healthy recipes to look or see if you can invent something that includes the contents of your fridge or cupboard! https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes

Yesterday I made these cheese scones for me and my husband to have for lunch this week (they're not very healthy but they're very tasty and it's okay to have a little treat once in a while! cheeky)

Make sure you ask an adult to help you with any cooking or cutting and don't do anything before you check it's okay!

Have fun,

Mrs Glover

A big thanks to Miss Kenwell for sending me a picture of her sunshine yesterday (pictured below), she put my drawing to shame! laugh

Keeping a journal

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 8:10pm

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a relaxing weekend and are ready to get started on another week of learning. Things still feel very strange and different at the moment and I was thinking that in the future we are all going to be a part of history- in the future people will look back on this time and find it unbelievable to hear how we all had to stay home and even to do our learning at home instead of school!

Anyway, my little girls and I have been keeping a journal - jotting down ideas about: what we have done, what has made us smile, what we plan to do the next day, photos, and what we are thankful for. I have attached some pages below for you to have a go at keeping your own lockdown journal- you could print it off or copy some of the ideas into your own notebook or even create your own version complete with cover. I would love to see some of your pages and see what you have been up to.

Send them into our email

Year6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk or tweet them to the school twitter page or Y6 page.

looking forward to hearing from you

take care of yourselves,

Mrs Ranyard

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 2

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 4:23pm

Hi year 6, here is the next chapter from The Boy at the Back of the Class. There are some questions for you to answer at the end and I'll paste them under the 'Showme' link so you can take your time answering them. Please let us see your answers by either sending to our year 6 email address or take a photo of them and post on our twitter account. Enjoy!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=B3sauhM

Chapter 2

What was so unusual about the new boy’s eyes?

Why did the narrator keep staring at Tom when he joined the class last year?

What is the narrator’s birthday wish?

Why couldn’t the narrator and his friends talk to the new boy at break times and lunchtime?

Why is Jennie ‘famous’?

What story was Jennie telling everyone about the new boy and how did she know?

Who do you think the woman in the red scarf is? Why do you think that?

What do we know about the new boy so far?

What do you think might happen the next day? Why do you think that?

Dividing Fractions with Miss Thornton

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 2:32pm

Tomorrow I will set a quiz in the morning for you to have a go, which will cover all of the different ways to calculate fractions, and in the afternoon I will go over the answers on a showme clip to see if you got them right or not, and if not where you may have gone a little bit wrong.

Sentence of The Day

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 1:19pm

Good afternoon year 6! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready for another fab week of learning from home. I am!

Today I am going to start with Sentence of the Day.

The sentence relates to persuasive letter writing and if my English group checks their writing packs, this sentence could help you include some detail when completeing the task of writing a letter to Mrs Hughes about promoting the Eco Team.

The sentence I have created starts with a great persuasive technique called 'flattery' where you flatter or complement your reader to encourage them to follow your way of thinking so they are more likely to listen and take action.

You begin by clicking on the link below and reading the sentence. Enjoy!

Wellbeing challenge number 2

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 11:42am

Today's challenge is to draw your own sunshine then in the middle of it write or draw all the things that make you happy.

I've done one if you would like to look at it for ideas (although your drawings may be a little better than mine! laugh) and have focused on all the things I can still do or see, even while we're in this strange situation smiley.

Stay safe everyone,

Mrs Glover

30.02.2020

Date: 30th Mar 2020 @ 11:34am

It is all to do with fractions so make sure that you check back to Miss Thornton's ShowMes or use your red book to help you.
Email us in your answers so we can check them
I will be posting the answers tomorrow and will give a shout out to any correct answers!

I have been reading through your Rose Blanche stories and have been blown away by how interesting and creative they are - you really are fantastic at descriptive sentences!
I will be posting some of these to twitter and on the blog over this week so keep checking back to see if yours is there.
Have you started any of the writing challenges from your pack yet? Pick one for this week and have a go! Send us in what you have written so far, Miss Thornton and I love reading what you have written and we can offer suggestions for where to take your writing next.
Play this game:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/skillswise/punctuation/z7b247h
Use this to start editing any writing you have done already - see if you can use any higher level punctuation such as dashes or parenthesis.

Taskmaster
Over the weekend, I was sent a challenge by a friend and I thought I'd challenge you all to see if you can be more creative than we were (I bet you can!)
Have a look at the challenge and have a go - email or tweet us your entries and we will choose our favourites over the next couple of days.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tJCKtyz47E
There are no limits to what you can use or who can help you (get your whole family involved!)

Don't forget to check out Miss Glover's Wellbeing Challenge! It's so important to make sure that you are staying positive and looking after yourselves while you're at home - send us in your ideas, I'll post mine later today!

I think that's it for today.

Hello, Mrs Glover here!

I hope everyone is staying safe, having fun and working hard on your learning. I'm going to post a Health and Wellbeing Challenge every day for people to do if they choose to. I'll be doing them all too and posting pictures where I can. Please feel free to e-mail any pictures or comments to your home learning e-mail addresses!

Challenge number 1: Go on a mindfulness walk. Write or draw 5 things that you can see, hear, feel, smell or touch (make sure you have an adult with you if necessary and stay far way from people you may see when you're out, although you can still say a friendly hello!) You could even do this in your garden if you have one!

Here's a picture of my mindfulness walk that I went on at lunch time today!

I saw trees and water, I heard birds and rustling, I could smell different plants and I could feel the sun on my face :-)

Hello from Mrs Turner

Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 10:03am

Hello again everyone!

I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying all the home learning your teachers have been giving you to do. I have seen some of your emails and it looks like you are doing brilliantly so well done!  I have been working away at home, I start every morning with the Joe Wicks work out, I wonder how many of you have been doing it too. Remember it’s so important to keep active even when you are at home.

I had another thought, yesterday Penny helped me with the washing, we paired the socks together! I thought this is a good time for you all to be helping out your grown-ups at home. I am sure they would really appreciate it.

I miss you all so much and can't wait to get back to school.

Take care,

Mrs Turner

Hello Year 6!

I hope you have been looking after yourselves and staying safe at home. What amazing weather we have been having - if you have somewhere safe to go outside, make sure you are getting lots of fresh air and making the most of it!

Today I have 2 challenges for you:

1. Gary Lineker is back and he needs help with another maths puzzle. This week it's percentages! Have a go at solivng his questions - let me know how quickly you could do it.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znjqtfr/articles/zsgwq6f
I have attached a knowledge organiser to help remind you how we solve percentages - remember to look in your red books too! (Don't forget about your magic %!)

2. This week I have been reading Mythos by Stephen Fry - it's all about Greek myths and I have really enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I am nearly finished and I just don't know what to read next! I'd love to hear your suggestions - I'm all out of ideas :(
Could you create a book review of something you have read recently that you think I would enjoy? You could write about it, draw it or even present it as a video (I know some of you are so creative with technology and can probably think of an even more exciting way - I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with).

Send these into me at: y6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk or tweet me at: Year6Ravensbur1 - Check back to see what my next book will be!

Some other fun things you might like to try at home this week:
10am - Oti Mabuse from Strictly Come Dancing - live dance lessons (I know how much you all love dancing!)
11am - Storytime with David Walliams. every day at 11am on www.worldofdavidwalliams.com
Music with Myleene Class. Twice a week, Myleene is doing music lessons on YouTube. Next one is Friday 27th March 10am

Good Morning Year 6 I hope you're up and about on this beautiful sunny morning and not worrying about the prospect of having to stay at home too much- you have plenty to keep yourself busy at least! Here is a sentence for you to check over and correct-good luck!

Persuasive letter writing- links to your writing tasks

Can you spot 3 spelling errors (One is a year 5/6 spelling), a missing punctuation error and improve the green highlighted word?

Firstly the issue of excessive litter in the area immediatly surrounding the school building has increasinglly become worse, due to the lack of litter bins in the local visinity.

Once you have spotted the mistakes then send me your corrected sentence via our special year 6 email, tweet it to year 6 or post it on our school blog. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello from Mrs Turner

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:45am

Monday 23rd March 2020

Good morning everyone I hope you are all up and looking forward to a day of learning at home. It is a beautiful day perhaps you can have some time in the garden. I am sorry that I wasn't in school last week, both the government and Mrs Hughes advised that I stay at home but please don't worry I am not sick! I really do miss you all, I was so enjoying going around all the school and teaching so many of you, what amazing children you are.

Year 6 I am especially sorry that we have not had the chance to say goodbye. I remember you all so fondly from year 4 and wish you well with all that the future holds. I believe that each and every one of you has a special future and encourage to grab every opportunity that life gives you. Work hard at high school it will be so worth it.

For everybody else I look forward to seeing you soon - imagine how great that first day will be when we are allowed back into school. I can't wait!  I have seen that Joe Wicks is doing a PE lesson every morning on line, I would encourage you to join in its so important that you stay active even when you are stuck inside.

Stay safe and I will see you soon.

Love Mrs Turner (Hibbs)
