A day finding out about all things Ancient Greek!

Date: 14th Jan 2019 @ 8:27pm

Sparta or Athens: which city-state would you rather live in?

We spent a fantastic day exploring this question with two fabulous Greek visitors, Andros and Penelope. We found out that the Spartans were amazing warriors, famed for their bravery and courage in battle. At just 7 years old, boys were sent away from home to train for the Spartan army...some of the things they had to do were awful! With no shelter or bed, and just wearing a thin tunic, the boys were encouraged to rub stinging nettles all over their face and body at night so that the burning sensation would keep them warm! We found out that Spartan women were treated well for the Ancient Greek era: they could own land, could wear their hair short and did not need the permission of a man to leave the house. We really enjoyed looking at and holding the amazing Spartan weapons!

The Athenians on the other hand, were the inventors of democracy and created the first ever theatre in the world. They looked after their poor much better, and liked to enjoy celebrations and festivals. We also got to play some different Ancient Greek games and created a Greek play in the afternoon where we got to dress up as lots of Greek gods and goddesses that we're learning about in Writing, such as Hades and Zeus.

Have a look at some of the photos of our fabulous day!

P.S. We voted (by a very large majority) that we'd have rather lived in Athens!!

Multiplication Mastery Challenge

Date: 11th Jan 2019 @ 2:52pm

Challenge 5HC!

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:52pm

How long would it take you to complete the blank multiplication square? We are working on developing our multiplication fluency this year and this challenge is a great way to practice!

Have a go at home!

Did you solve the problem?

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:44pm

Have a look below at 5HC's amazing reasoning with area. They worked out that in order to solve the problem they needed to find the area of the different squares.

For example a square with 4cm sides would have an area of 16cm2.

After that they worked out the area that the rectangle would be and then put some squares together to find possible lengths of the side of the rectangle. They knew they had to be able to divide the total area by the length of a side exactly, and checked that.

Oliver said "When we put the 15x15 square next to the 18x18 square we got a length of 33cm and found this was a factor of the total area and that the other side had to be 32 cm, so we rearranged the squares until we had made that rectangle"

Can you make a bridge using spaghetti and marshmallows?

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:33pm

We had great fun launching our new topic, "Why are bridges built in different ways?" last week.

The challenge was to build a bridge - using only spaghetti and marshmallows - that could hold the weight of the car for at least 10 seconds without falling over. Have a look at the photos to see how successful we were! (answer: not very!!)

Can you solve this problem?

Date: 14th Nov 2018 @ 4:26pm

We have been investigating the area and perimeter of different shapes. Have a look at the problem below and try to solve it! We will show you our reasoning in a later blog!

Nine squares with side lengths 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15 and 18cm can be fitted together with no gaps and no overlaps, to form a rectangle.

What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

Victorian Inventions Day!

Date: 12th Nov 2018 @ 3:51pm

Our theme this term is "Why are bridges built in different ways?"...you'd be forgiven for wondering why on earth we have had a Victorian Inventions day!

Did you know that as the Industrial Revolution took its course, the Victorians developed Britain's road and rail networks like no one ever had before? We'll be exploring some of the amazing ways they built bridges to enable goods to be transported from one part of the country to another, crossing great expanses of water. We'll especially be focusing on finding out how the Victorians built Tower Bridge, where they had to find a way to build in water so that traffic could cross the Thames yet still allow cargo ships to pass underneath.

To lead us into this, we explored some of the other amazing inventions of the Victorian era, such as Morse Code and Steam Trains. We even had our photograph taken with a real 1836 camera lens; we had to stay VERY still so that our photo wouldn't become all blurry! See a sneak peak of Mrs Hodges trying to 'look Victorian' below!

Times Tables at Ravensbury!

Date: 12th Nov 2018 @ 9:07am

This year at Ravensbury we are thinking about developing our times tables. We will be practicing our tables in a variety of different ways. One of the ways we can practice is by using a range of online games and activities.

Click on the links below to practice! All of the activities work on a laptop, some may not work on a tablet.

Quarry Bank Mill!

Date: 12th Oct 2018 @ 10:09am

We had such a brilliant visit to Quarry Bank Mill at the end of September. We learned so much about what it would have been like to work in a cotton mill, and it was an amazing opportunity to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere, dress up and do some role play. It's helped us be better historians and better writers back at school too!

Greek food tasting

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 3:15pm

World Book Day saw the launch of our modern Greece connected curriculum topic. The children tasted a range of food from Greece including olives, hummus and pitta bread. There were mixed responses from the children with many liking some of the new flavours but others (such as the figs) proving slightly less popular!

Science Week Experiment

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:57am

This week is Science week at Ravensbury School so to mark it, we carried out a science experiment linked to our human timeline topic to test the hypothesis that a person’s arm span is equal to their height.

The children found that it is sometimes spot on. Some children had exactly the same height and arm span measurements! For those who didn’t, the class agreed that they were broadly the same.

The children demonstrated excellent measuring skills and they planned the experiment independently; deciding to measure 5 children before reaching a conclusion; recording the results and summing them up. Well done 5HC!

Testing for solubility in water

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:55am

This half term in science, we are investigating how mixtures can be made or separated. In this lesson, children tested which materials were soluble in water and which ones weren’t. There were some brilliant examples of scientific vocabulary use including soluble, solubility, solution and solvent.

Bridges Launch

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:54am

Welcome back 5HC! We hope you have all had a lovely holiday.

Yesterday was the launch of our next connected curriculum topic – Bridges! At first glance, this may not be the most interesting of topics but we have lots of exciting opportunities and activities planned to enhance the children’s understanding.

We will still be linking this to our previous topic of the Victorians. The Victorian period was full of amazing inventors and many created ground-breaking bridges. As part of this, we will be visiting Quarry Bank Mill to research the Industrial Revolution.

Our launch involved making sturdy bridges from spaghetti and marshmallows. The class had a go at creating bridges using triangles – the strongest of all shapes but they children found them harder to create than expected. They may need a little more exploring of bridge types!

Victorian Inventions Day

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:53am

What a fabulous day year 5 had yesterday. We had a very knowledgeable visitor in school to tell us all about the Victorian period and how there were great changes in science and industry.

In the morning, we looked at Victorian inventions such as the electric telegraph and how it was used to send Morse code messages. We found out that people first had their photo taken during that era and we had our photos taken on a lens which was 137 years old!

In the afternoon, we learned about how the steam engine was developed and how everyone was involved in finding the most efficient and safe design. We saw a model of the winning engine called ‘the Rocket’ and we powered it around a small model railway.

An Art Attack!

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:42am

Year 4 and 5 at Ravensbury School are very lucky to have been given the opportunity to help decorate a bench which is going to be placed in Manchester city centre to encourage people to enjoy and discuss different stories. Yesterday, year explored the book ‘Lost Happy Endings’ with Mrs. McAffer and sketched out some pictures from it. We obviously have some budding artists in this class! Everyone considered the feelings and events in the book very carefully and we had some fantastic discussions about different theories we came up with.

Next week, we will be moving the sketches on to the bench. Watch this space!

A Spanish Experience

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 11:37am

This half term, 5HC are learning about Spain in the connected curriculum. They are realising that it is a fantastic country with lots of exciting and interesting cultural aspects to it.

To give them a ‘flavour’ of Spain and what their learning might include this half term, we started it all off with a super learning afternoon of making patatas bravas. Here are some of the things the children said about it:

“It tasted amazing!”

“I wish I lived in Spain!”

‘We create, We explore,

We care, We soar’
