Maths Links - Percentages and Telling the Time!

Date: 18th Jun 2021 @ 2:58pm

Year 5 have been looking closely at the links between fractions, decimals and percentages. In order to help understand, 5HW have asked for some online learning games and activities to help.

Click on the links below and practice the tasks!

Spanish Flamenco Dancing!

Date: 10th Jun 2021 @ 10:18am

We launched our brand new learning for this half term, exploring the big question:

'Why is Spain such a popular tourist destination?'

We had lots of fun learning 5 basic Flamenco steps, before putting them together to form our own sequence of movement. Each step makes a slightly different sound; we practised:

golpe - stomp (whole foot)

planta or media - ball of the foot

tacón - heel lift

punta - toe tap

latigo or latiguillo - snapping the toe (literally means whip)

Check out our videos and photos to see how we got on!

We made 'Space' Burritos!

Date: 26th May 2021 @ 10:16am

Another really fun morning in our classroom today! For our Connected Curriculum experience, which draws together lots of our learning this half term, we pretended we were astronauts on the ISS and made 'space' burritos! We had to plan which ingredients we would use, making sure we had a balance of the different food groups, and then apply the foods to the tortilla in the way we had watched the astronuats on the ISS prepare their food. This involved squashing up ingredients to make a sticky paste, which then worked like 'glue' to help ingredients like rice and sweetcorn to stick.

Most of us were brave enough to taste - some of us ate the whole thing!

Los Animales Domesticos!

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 2:42pm

Today in Spanish, 5HW have been learning different animal names. We have even started to put our vocabulary into sentences!

Who can tell Miss Wendt what 'el gato dice meow' means?

The link below may help!

Space Food Tasting!

Date: 18th May 2021 @ 10:22am

We have had a very exciting morning here in 5HW!

As part of our Nutrition unit of work in D&T, we have been finding out about how astronuats eat a balanced diet whilst living on the International Space Station (since we are studying Space in Science!). As part of that, we have tasted freeze-dried food this morning, which is the type of food the astronauts would have eaten on the first space missions in the 1960s!

We have tried 5 foods:

Tortilla

Banana

Cinnamon Apple Wedges (the BIG favourite!)

Strawberry

Neopolitan Ice Cream

Have a look at our photos - can you work out which food is which on the plate?

We've raised....

Date: 27th Apr 2021 @ 8:51am

Last half term, we created two pieces of amazing artwork inspired by two Greek artists - Nikolas Georgoudakis and Mike Karolos. We framed our chosen piece and were so proud of them. As part of our study, we explored issues facing modern Greece today, including the fact that many refugees arrive in Greece in search of safety. We were very moved by the CBBC news reports we watched, and wanted to do something to help. A charity called Refugee Action supports refugees in Manchester, so we decided to sell our artwork in order to make a donation to this charity.

Our final total has come in today, and we have raised

Easter Creations

Date: 1st Apr 2021 @ 12:43pm

Wow - what a creative class 5HW are!

There were so many wonderful entries for our Easter competition, it was incredibly hard to choose the two winners for most creative and most independent.

After much deliberation, our two winners are:

Alexander and Felix!

Well done to both of you, and to everyone who entered.

Have a look at the attached photos to see what was made!

5HW's Amazing Art Work!

Date: 29th Mar 2021 @ 2:56pm

We have created some amazing art work this half term, inspired by two Greek artists: Nikolas Georgoudakis and Mike Karolos. We have chosen our favourite piece and framed it; click on the link to see a mini tour of the art - don't they look beautiful!

https://youtu.be/TigIkpHENVY

As part of our study of Greece this half term, we have explored how Greece has received many refugees who are unable to live in their own countries safely. We have also discussed how some people are seeking safety in the UK and, more specifically, Manchester – we thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for us to show our support and care to our community by giving a donation to Refugee Action, a charity which helps refugees build safe and hopeful lives in Manchester. We'll let you know how much we manage to raise!

Non-Chronological Reports

Date: 16th Dec 2020 @ 1:23pm

We have written some super non-chronological reports about an invention of our choice. We worked really hard on including additional information using parenthesis marked with commas or brackets, and making sure our ideas flowed well together using different conjunctions. We created our final versions using PicCollage so that they look like an authentic page from an information book! Check out some of our reports in the photos!

Bridge Building

Date: 16th Dec 2020 @ 1:14pm

It's clear 5HW are a class full of budding engineers and architects!

We've had such a fabulous morning putting into practice all of the skills we've explored in order to create our bridges. Our design criteria was to make a bridge that was free-standing, had moving bascules and had a span of at least 0.5m.

The collaborative and teamwork skills were exceptional as teams of 4 worked together to make beam and shell structures, and create pivot points using skewers and screw eyes. What a brilliant time, check out our photos to see us working on our designs and our finished bridges.

You'll see EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US is on the Outstanding Star today!

CC - exploring beam structures

Date: 10th Dec 2020 @ 10:00am

It's an exciting morning in 5HW today - in preparation for our bridge building, we're exploring ways of securing cardboard to create strong beam structures. We already know that square and triangular beams are strong shapes, and we've worked out how many folds we need in order to create one side with two layers of cardboard so it can be secured. We're exploring using split pins, sellotape, glue and plastic screws to fix our beam structures into shape. We're also practising using a stanley knife (under extremely close 1:1 supervision!) in order to cut our cardboard neatly to size.

We're definitely feeling confident in knowing which way to turn a screwdriver to tighten or loosen a screw now...helped by the rhyme Mrs Hodges still says to herself: "righty tighty, lefty loosey". Does anyone else still say that?!

Dance

Date: 2nd Dec 2020 @ 12:08pm

We're really enjoying our Dance this half term - the two main skills we're working on are 'mirroring' and 'retrograde'. We've explored mirroring side by side, facing each other (2m apart!) and in a line. It seems very easy when we talk about it, but making sure our movements are synchronised perfectly is much harder than we first thought! Retrograde is the dance technique of performing movements in reverse.

Our the next couple of weeks we'll be putting the final stages onto our dance which incorporates these two skills, and is inspired by Victorian transport inventions. For now, check out this video of a perfectly mirrored step which is aiming to give the impression of a steam train. Well done girls!

CC Launch - Making Structures!

Date: 12th Nov 2020 @ 11:59am

We launched our new Connected Curriculum topic today, "Why does the world need great inventions?"

We had an exciting (and competitive!) time creating structures which would hold the weight of a toy car. We could only use 2 pieces of A4 paper and some Sellotape. We had 15 minutes to create our structure - if it held the weight of a toy car for 10 seconds without falling, we won 5 house points each. The pair with the tallest structure were awarded an extra 10 housepoints each!

We worked collaboratively and had some fantastic conversations about what makes a strong structure...which will lead us perfectly into looking at incredible bridge inventions which have had a huge impact on transport and the economy as part of our D&T learning later this half term!

New CC Learning!

Date: 10th Nov 2020 @ 10:26am

We've started our new unit of learning in our Connected Curriculum today, exploring the big question:

"Why does the world need great inventions?"

We've had a great time designing our new front covers for our books, and some of us had time to make a start on some different Lego inventions!

Our FABULOUS digital wallpaper! (2)

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 12:08pm

We have had the BEST time creating digital wallpaper today using our William Morris inspired artwork. We used PicCollage to duplicate our tiles and rotate them until we achieved a repeated pattern that we thought was most effective. We then repeated the duplication process until we had created stunning repeated patterns which are just as good as William Morris' wallpaper designs! (in our opinion...)

We hope you love our digital wallpaper and download it to create a background to your phone, tablet or laptop!

A morning of art!

Date: 3rd Nov 2020 @ 12:42pm

What a fantastic start to the new half term we've had - a whole morning to continue our William Morris inspired tiles, working first with oil pastel and then textiles. We've displayed wonderful concentration as we created our templates, cut out patterns and then used sewing skills to add additional colour and detail. Have a look at the photos to see how our art is progressing!

We are artists!

Date: 13th Oct 2020 @ 11:49am

We are having such a wonderful morning exploring the patterns of Victorian artist, William Morris. We're using his intricate, beautiful patterns to guide us as we create our own nature-inspired art using oil pastels. There's such concentration and creativity in our classroom today! We'll be continuing our art study of William Morris designs through textiles...keep your eyes peeled to see what we get up to on this blog!

History Investigators!

Date: 22nd Sep 2020 @ 12:21pm

We're absolutely loving our Victorians topic, and have spent today exploring a primary source - a painting called "The Homeless in Victorian Britain", painted by Luke Fildes in 1874. We used our careful observation skills to notice every detail of the painting, and made inferences about what we thought was happening. It's quite a sad and shocking painting, showing a queue of people - men, women and children - waiting outside a police station to see if they would be given a ticket to stay in a workhouse for the night.

We're starting to realise that life for the Victorian poor was incredibly difficult, both through our primary source research in history, and through the themes that Charles Dickens includes in Oliver Twist, which is our current text in reading. It's provoking a lot of thoughtful discussion!

5HW Outstanding Learners!

Date: 17th Jul 2020 @ 7:16pm

I had a wonderful time this afternoon being back in school for a special (socially distanced!) "afternoon tea" in the hall which Mrs Hughes, Mrs Thewlis and Miss Wolfenden organised for the teachers - although I've been in our classroom lots of times these past few weeks (it's looking very organised!), it really hit home today how strange a term this has been. I've so missed you all, and it's felt strange not saying goodbye before the summer holidays. I'm very glad we get to spend the first two days of term together to do some lovely activities and have a chance to properly say goodbye! I know you will have such a fantastic year with Miss Kenwell, Miss Fish and Miss Coulson in Year 6, but before we start thinking too much about that, let me just say...

Miss Wendt and I are so very proud of you 5HW. The way many of you have continued your learning from home has been fantastic, and you have shown such determination and resilience. I've loved seeing your work and reading your comments; you truly are outstanding learners.

Have a fantastic summer break, and I look forward to hearing all your news on Thursday 3rd September!

We have finally made it to the end of the school year. What a strange way to end it. I find it hard to believe that we have been off school since the 20th March (with some of you staying in school and working super hard!). It feels like yesterday, when we were creating our Greek Landscapes.

We are so excited to get to teach you in those first two days of term - it wouldn't feel right, not spending some time with you before you enter year 6! We both loved speaking to you all on the phone this week - it brightened our days.

Well done to Ganesa and Victoria for completing yesterday's famous person challenge. The person was Marie Curie, and she was born on the 7th November 1876. She is famous because she was the first person to win a noble prize in both physics and chemistry. A fun fact they shared is that she was a World War 1 hero!

I will post the answers for today's famous person, when I post the reading challenge results. Here is today's picture:

Well done to Ganesa, Jediah and Victoria for completing yesterday's famous person challenge. The person was Horatio Nelson. He was born on the 29th September 1758 (that's the day after Merlin's - my dog's - birthday!). He is well known for fighting in battles such as the Nile. An interesting fact that you shared, is that during his life he lost both his eye and his arm!

Today's famous person is a tricky one, so here is a clue - she is associated with science:
