Children's Mental Health Week

Date: 16th Feb 2023 @ 1:00pm

Last week was Children's Mental Health week in school. During the week we did lots of activities such as discussing what makes us calm, midfulness colouring activities, yoga and tried out some breathing exercises.

We also buddied up with Year 4 and 5 and went on a walk and chat around the daily mile track on the playground. It was lovely to see all the children having a walk and talk!

Here are the links to some of the exercises we tried in class should you wish to have a go at home:

Writing, maths and ICT

Date: 20th Jan 2023 @ 4:03pm

What a fantastic week we've had in year 5. In writing, we have been trying to give the children a bit more freedom in what they can write and their resulting myths have been outstanding. It was such a pleasure to mark their work! I couldn't take my eyes off their stories, their battle scenes were so exciting! We went down to year 2 to read them to the younger children. It was so lovely to see the year 5s being so kind, caring and respectful with the smaller ones while the year 2s listened beautifully and answered lots of questions about what was exciting in their stories.

In maths, we have been learning about division and nearly the whole class now understands and can use the bus stop method! Although, some a still a little reluctant to practise it because they're not quite confident yet.

And in ICT, we learned about the binary code today and how it is used to transfer data to the mars rover. They had a go at this game which was really interesting!  https://games.penjee.com/binary-numbers-game/

Have a lovely weekend 5CR!

The Happy Puzzle Company Day

Date: 12th Jan 2023 @ 4:30pm

Today, we were really lucky to have a session with Tom from the Happy Puzzle Company as a reward for all our hard work in maths.

The focus was on teamwork and year 5 really did do us proud! They worked beautifully together, making sure that everyone had a chance to take part. Some of the puzzles were a little tricky to complete but their perserverance and determination paid off. We played genius star where we had to fit blocks into the spaces on a star shape around some blockers. Then we had a go at matching patterns using some coloured star blocks or a train with shapes to arrange accurately. Finally, the children had to follow some clues to identify where the 'treasure' was hidden on a map of smart town using coordinates.

Thank you!

Baby photos

Date: 9th Jan 2023 @ 10:54am

This half term in science, we are learning all about the human life cycle. We sent out a letter last week requesting a copy of a photo of the children in 5CR from when they were a baby. Its going to be kept secret so that we can guess who the photos are of!

If you haven't already sent one in, please could you aim to get it here by Wednesday. They will be returned as soon as possible.

Thank you

What a return!

Date: 9th Jan 2023 @ 10:52am

What a return to school we've had!

Last week, 5CR had their first RE lesson of 2023. As a gentle reintroduction, we thought it would be nice to give all children the chance to talk about their individual beliefs and religions.

At first, many children were reluctant to talk about themselves until we started to discuss life after death. All children were so very respectful of each other and we had an excellent discussion when everyone understood that we could have different beliefs to each other but still get on. Miss Gallery put everyone onto outstanding in recognition of their respect for one another. Well done 5CR!

Happy Holidays

Date: 16th Dec 2022 @ 3:28pm

What a fantastic term we have had! Its been such a pleasure to teach your children the last term and I can't wait for the next two! Have a happy, restful holidays. We have reminded the children about the dangers of playing or even just walking on what appears to be ice, especially after the sad news this week of some children losing their lives. Please all stay safe and I will look forward to seeing you in January!

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it!

Christmas week

Date: 12th Dec 2022 @ 8:29pm

This is going to be a very busy week at Ravensbury, filled with lots of fun Christmas activities! We thought it would be helpful to share the schedule on here:

Monday - In the morning we will be inviting parents in to fill a bag of xmas fair leftovers!
After school we'll be drawing the raffle in the hall.

Monday and Tuesday are party days.  Children will come to school in their party clothes.on their day.

Wednesday - is Christmas dinner day.

Friday - finish for Christmas holidays at 2:30pm.

Throughout the week, we will be making a Christmas card for children to bring home and completing some maths and English related Christmas activities. Towards the end of the week, we will be emptying trays and lockers. Please could you send your child in with a bag on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday so that they have something to carry their things home in.

Reading books will be collected in this week and handed back out when we return at the beginning of January.

Finally, it has been an aboslute pleasure to teach your children this term. They are an aboslute pleasure! Mrs. Ratcliffe finishes this week for maternity leave and she is very sad to go but Mrs. Caine is so very excited to take over! We can't wait to see what progress the class makes during the rest of year 5 - in all sorts of ways. Have a very restful holiday 5CR!

Bridge Building

Date: 12th Dec 2022 @ 8:22pm

We've had such a busy penultimate week to the term! As we continue with our learning about Victorian inventions, we learned about different types of bridges. We then had a go at making our own out of cardboard. In groups of four, children then let a toy car pass over their bridges. The adults in the class were so impressed with the children's ability to work together and help one another understand the man many steps involved!

Short Division

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 3:48pm

This week, year 5 have been learning about written methods of multiplication and division.

They found the division in particular really tricky. Their homework this week should support them in being able to practise the skill at home. However, they may need some support from adults or older children. Please feel free to talk them through each question. There is no expectation that children complete the homework entirely on their own.

BBC bitesize has an excellent explanation and some practise questions to try. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/znmtsbk/articles/zqpddp3?scrlybrkr=79556a3a

Keep trying year 5!

Cornflour Gloop

Date: 7th Nov 2022 @ 10:53am

This half term, our science topic is properties of materials. We started with a quick revision lesson around solids, liquids and gases. We explored what makes a liquid a liquid or a solid a solid or a gas a gas. The children worked really hard and showed a secure understanding of what each one is. In golden time, I made things a little more difficult by introducing what I call cornflour gloop (also known as oobleck)! This is just cornflour mixed with a little water. On first appearance, it looks like a liquid - it flows and takes the form of its container. When you apply force to it though (by for example punching or squeezing it), it behaves like a solid. Heres a video that explains what a non-Newtonian fluid is!

Freestyle Footballer visit

Date: 7th Nov 2022 @ 10:42am

This week we were lucky enough to have a visit from the world's number two freestyle footballer and he was amazing! He showed off his skills in assembly and explained to everyone that it took him three hours of practise PER DAY to get as highly skilled as he is. Later in the day, 5CR got the chance to have a go at some of his tricks. Photos and brief instructions should have made their way home on Thursday so children can practise in their own time.

Whilst many children could identify some of the tricks he had taught them, they found it harder to identify the personal development skills they had used such as resiliance, determination and perserverance. We hope that when they are finding a new skill in school tricky, they might be able to remind themselves of today and how long it can take to learn a new skill.

Harvest Festival rap

Date: 20th Oct 2022 @ 4:10pm

On Friday, we will be taking part in our harvest festival celebration assembly by performing the vegetable rap to the rest of key stage 2. If you would like to practise at home, these are the lyrics. Thanks for having a go!

Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green

Carrots are sweet once they are clean

Pile them on my plate, now don’t be mean

I’m a 5-a-day, get out and play, veg-eating machine!

Chocolate bars you can’t sell to me

I spend my money on celery

Guarantee there’s no stopping me

When the plate I see has some broccoli

You think you’re tough? You think you’re hard?

You need to grow veggies out in your yard.

Dig them up muddy but fresh and sweet,

The tasty, no-wastey, treat to eat.

One potato, two potato, three potato, four

We’ll clap in the air and tap on the floor

Just give ‘em a clean underneath the tap,

Turn around, touch the ground, our vegetable rap.

Fruit and Veg, let me hear you shout

I’m goin’ crazy for a Brussel Sprout.

Blackb’rries are juicy and rhubarb is sour

We’re getting healthier hour by hour

Double double toil and trouble

Heat ‘em up and make ‘em bubble

Five a day goodness for me and for you

We love fruit and vegetables too

True!

Yeah!

            Potato!

Buoyancy experiment

Date: 20th Oct 2022 @ 4:08pm

In science this week, we were learning about the final force of the half term - buoyancy. We investigated different boat shapes to see which type has the best buoyancy. The children made some amazing boats but Andrew's own design won it because it had the largest surface area. Well done Andrew!

Air resistance experiment

Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 4:23pm

We completed another experiment this week to investigate the effect of air resistance and how it is used by sycamore trees to disperse their seeds. The class made paper helicopters and used paperclips to gradually make it heavier. They found that as the helicopters got heavier, they feel faster. I was so impressed with their teamwork skills with one child timing and one dropping - they worked together beautifully!

Celebrate Me Day!

Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 3:55pm

On Wednesday this week, Ravensbury held its first Celebrate Me Day! It was lovely to hear about the things that make the children feel like they are individuals and seeing them dressed up in something that represents them. We had a special assembly when we welcomed some guests who used to attend the school and are now high fliers - as we believe all our pupils can be! Below are some pictures of an activity we completed during the day. Each child had three children to decorate. The first was supposed to represent them with a sentence underneath to tell us something about them.

Thank you to those parents who were able to pop into school. It was wonderful to see the children so excited to share their learning with everyone.

Quarry Bank Mill

Date: 12th Oct 2022 @ 10:11am

In Year 5, we have been learning about the Victorians. To find out more about what life was like for children working in the factories in Victorian times, we went on a visit to Quarry Bank Mill which was a cotton factory. We found out about numerous injuries children suffered from after working with heavy machinery and the long hours they had to work. We decided that we are very lucky to go to school instead!

Friction investigation

Date: 5th Oct 2022 @ 11:56am

As we continue to learn about forces, 5CR investigated the effect friction can have on the soles of shoes. Using force meters, we measured the amount of newtons it took to move a shoe across five different surfaces: grass, concrete, table, lino and carpet. Everyone worked very systematically and showed a great understanding of how we were making it a fair test!

Place value counters

Date: 5th Oct 2022 @ 11:51am

Last week, the children in year 5 were learning how to use place value counters for addition and subtraction. Some of the children didn't understand why the needed to use this method at first as they could do it quicker with written methods. It quickly became clear, however, that many didn't actually know what it meant to carry to the next column.

By the end of the week, everyone had a much better understanding of what addition and subtraction is!

Sports Day

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 4:54pm

Well, the weather gods were very kind to us for our sports day today! We had a fabulous time. There were four stations where children worked in their house teams to complete a variety of tasks including javelin, relay and throwing and catching. Its been a very busy week but great fun!

Parent Overviews

Date: 14th Sep 2022 @ 10:24am

We have just uploaded a copy of all the parent overviews for each half term of year 5 onto our class pages. These documents may change slightly as we move through the year but they will give you an idea of everything your child will be learning about.

Welcome back!

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 4:34pm

Welcome back to Ravensbury!

We have had such a lovely week of getting to know the children. There can be a lot to take in in the first week including new rules and routines and it can be a lot for some children. However, 5CR have been amazing and it makes us so excited for working with the class in the coming year!

Please read all the information on the class page and the file to download at the bottom which tells you everything you need to know about year 5. If you have any questions then please don't be afraid to approach us on the playground at hometime. We also hope to see many parents at the Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday.

See you next week!

Separating Mixtures

Date: 14th Jul 2022 @ 4:12pm

Today was such a busy day! Years 5 and 6 performed brilliantly in the end of year show. Many children were a little nervous given that they haven't really had the opportunity to perform for a few years but you wouldn't have known it. We were so proud of the way the class really stepped it up and gave it their all. The glockenspiels in particular sounded amazing!

Then this afternoon, they were set the challenge of separating mixtures without using their fingers to pick bits out. They were provided with a range of equipement and had to work together to figure out how to do it. There were some brilliant examples of peer support and teamwork and they all managed to reach a decision about the most efficient method of working. Well done 5CR!

CC Spain launch

Date: 10th Jun 2022 @ 5:20pm

What a busy week it's been and we still have another 6 and a half to go!

Yesterday, 5CR took part in the launch of their connected curriculum topic for this half term - Spain! We will be learning a bit about the geography of Spain and their customs. We will also be writing a balanced argument about bullfighting.

To start it all off, we learned some flamenco moves and made fans to use during a dance. Everyone threw themselves into it and had a great time!

Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Date: 26th May 2022 @ 4:10pm

We had such a fantastic day on Wednesday celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee! The rain may have prevented us from holding our arranged picnic and show on the playground but we still had a great showcase in the hall. The children all had selfies with the queen, we planted a tree to remember the day and we really enjoyed our picnic lunches and performances.
