Taskmaster Wall of Fame!

Date: 16th Feb 2023 @ 11:31am

Last week was Children's Mental Health Week and in 3JH we learned all about how to make connections through the Taskmaster Challenges. We worked as teams to share ideas and create lots of pieces of work along the way!

Day 1: Today's task was to make a rainbow. The children all reached for the paper and felt-tips BUT soon realised that they needed to MAKE a rainbow. They then set off again with resources they could find in the classroom... We had numicon rainbows, cube rainbows, felt-tip rainbows. They did a fantastic job and I was so impressed with their communication and team work skills.

Day 2: The task for day 2 was to come up with a new outdoor game that used one piece of equipment and had 3 rules. This got their imaginations going and children started to come up with some amazing ideas. They voted within their groups for their favourite game and got to work writing the rules!

Day3: The children and I really enjoyed Day 3's challenge. They had to make a self-portrait from things they could find outside. I set them a time for 5 minutes to gather as many things as they could for their self-portrait and then they had a go at making themselves on the playground! Faizan did declare at one point "This is too hard - I don't know what I look like!" this was obviously recieved with puzzled looks from everyone else but he did a great job in the end! Did anyone spot their child's self-portrait at pickup?

Day 4: I think this was the favourite of the tasks! The children choreographed a whole-class dance! They then performed it in my assembly the next morning to all of Year 1, 2 and 3! The children and teachers were really impressed and it inspired lots of them to do the same!

Day 5: Dress to express day was fantastic! The children loved expressing themselves through their outfits and the challenge for the day was to make a hat to wear with their outfit. We had hats with doors on them, hats with names and Noah even crowned himself King for the day!

The final challenge was to find the connection in the treasure hunt. We had looked for clues all week and found a series of numbers... I am delighted to announce... WE DID IT! We solved the connection and we made it onto the wall of fame!!

Stone Age... or the Ice Age?

Date: 19th Jan 2023 @ 10:27am

On Tuesday we took a trip ack in time to the Stone Age! We went on a coach to Tatton Park and learned all about how people from th estone age lived. However, it was SO cold that we could have been back in the Ice Age!

The children had a wonderful time learning all about the Stone Age and how people lived. They used tools to plant seeds to grow a harvest, make a fire and cut down apple trees. They also used their team building skills to build shelters. The children put all of their knowledge toegther to learn how eventually people stopped moving around to hunt animals and began to build stuctures to keep animals in, becoming farmers.

Thank you again to our parent helpers! We loved having you come along with us.

Please enjoy these photos of the children getting involved with their learning!

Year 3 - Adventures in Art

Date: 17th Nov 2022 @ 10:52am

This week Year 3 had a wonderful time exploring colour, shape and line in their Art lesson. They studied the work of Irene Guerriero, a South American artist who used the rainforest as her inspiration. She is famous for creating huge pieces of work  and so that is what the children set about doing. They started by collecting some inspiration in their sketch books. Once they had practiced drawing the shapes of different leaves the children had a go at colour mixing to create different shades of green. They then all collaborated on one large sheet to create a mural. We can't wait to finish it next week and see it displayed outside the hall in the next few weeks.

Amazon Taste Test!

Date: 2nd Nov 2022 @ 8:29pm

This week the children took part in an exciting launch for our new topic: The Amazon Rainforest. Everyone got stuck into food tasting foods that would be available in the Amazon Rainforest. This meant lots of children tried new fruits or drink for the first time! I am really proud of them all for getting out of their comfort zone and trying new things. The coconunt milk did not go down very well, but the children loved the mango, pineapple and persimmon. The hihghlight of the tasting for most of them was of course the chocolate (can you blame them?). Here are some photos from our exciting Tuesday afternoon...

What can we put in Canopic Jars?

Date: 20th Oct 2022 @ 10:37am

This term we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt. As part of this the children have been learning how to mummify a dead body. This week they have written a set of instructions to help people mummify a body successfully. In DT the children learned all about Canopic Jars and what Egyptians put inside them during the mummification process. They then designed their own canopic jar and have used water bottles and modrock to make their own designs. The children then painted their jars once the modrock set and have used their colour mixing skills to add details. On Friday we will be showcasing our creations to the Year 4 students!

3JH Weekly Roundup!

Date: 18th Sep 2022 @ 4:13pm

Two weeks down, five to go...

And what a week it has been! Not only have we celebrated our first class birthday of the year, we have well and truly got stuck into our learning.

This week the children have been working on verbs, adverbs and adverbials in writing lessons. They have been writing 2a sentences and worked on describing the ways in which different characters move in the story. They even used their innovation skills to add new character and animals to the story too! I have been really impressed with the level of writing so jfar and look forward to seeing even more creative ideas from the children soon.

In Maths, we have continued to look at the value of three digit numbers. This week we ordered and compared three digit numbers. Children continued to use concrete or pictorial resources that they have found useful to decide which numbers had a greater or lesser value. They are all becomming confident helping themselves to resources that work best for them!

CN1.jpg CN2.jpg CN3.jpg CN4.jpg

In Science, we have continued to explore skeletons - in particular our own! Children have had a go at building a skeleton and then naming the bones. The next day they labelled one another's skeletons with the names of the bones. The children really enjoyed this activity and especially enjoyed the extra house point they all recieved from Mrs Thewlis for their hard work!

B2.jpgB3.jpgB1.jpg

In CC children explored the timeline of Ancient Egypt. They worked together to order key events in the Egyptian timeline. The children are working hard on the team work skills which is fantatsic to see!

Next week we have some special visitors coming in to do a workshop with the children all about Ancient Egypt (Tuesday). Then we will be having our first sports day since Covid to end the week (Friday morning). Lots of exciting things to look forward to!

Have a great weekend and see you all on Tuesday morning!

Miss Higgins :)

Welcome to 3JH!

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 4:46pm

Hi all,

My name is Miss Higgins and I will be your child's teacher this year. I am really excited as this will be my first year teaching Year 3, so I will be learning lots along with the children!

This week has been so much fun! I have loved getting to know the class and their interests - it seems we have lots of keen sports people!

This week we have introduced the book: The Egyptian Cinderella to the class. They have really enjoyed reading the story and making comparisons to the Cinderella they know already. We have drawn a story map of the beginning of the story and will be using this as we continue to establish our Year 3 writing skills throughout this term.

In Maths, we have begun to look at the value of three-digit numbers. The children have enjoyed using the concrete Maths resources to represent different three digit numbers. They have also begun to compare three digit numbers, based on what they know about their value. Next week we will be continuing with this skill as we order and compare three digit numbers.

In CC we went on a hieroglyph hunt! The children searched for the scattered hieroglyphs in the playground and unjumbled the word...MUMMIFICATION! They had loads of fun being Ancient Egyptian Explorers!

I am looking forward to another week of adventures and exploring with 3JH!

See you all on Monday morning for our Meet and Greet session 9-9.30.

Have a great weekend!

World Book Day 2022

Date: 8th Mar 2022 @ 7:54am

On Thursday 3rd March, it was World Book Day. We had so much fun celebrating all the amazing books we love!

We had some fantastic costumes on display in our class from aliens to superheroes, princesses to animals and so much more. It was fantastic to see everyone so excited about their costumes and show off in our catwalk/dance party with LKS2.

We had a surprise waiting for us in school that morning. At the front of the classroom, there was a bag full of presents and it was addressed to 3MS, that's us! We opened some of the presents and found out that they were books! They were books from an author called Zanib Mian all about a series called Planet Omar. We read the blurbs and thought it would be really exciting to look at these books a bit more today.

We read a few chapters of the first book, 'My Friend the Alien' and thought how funny it sounded. We decided to create our own aliens like the illustrations in the books. You can see us working hard on these in the pictures.

We were so lucky to have Miss Brookes from year 4 come and read us a story. It was called 'Aliens Love Underpants' and that might explain why all of our adults in school were dressed like aliens!

Next, we thought about how many exciting, informative and interesting books we have looked at this year in year 3. We discussed what we liked about different books and created some front covers and book reviews about these texts. We can't wait to see all of this amazing work up in our classroom on display.

After all the excitement of the day, it was time for one last story time before home time! We had a great day in year 3 and can't wait to explore stories even more this year.

Roman Launch!

Date: 8th Mar 2022 @ 7:35am

This half term we will be finding out more all about the Romans!

On our launch day we spoke about what we already knew about the Romans and what we would like to find out more about.

We looked at some of the events that took place during the Roman times and we used some of our history skills to plot these onto a timeline. We used BCE and CE to order the dates.

At the end of the day, to celebrate all of our hard work, we had a Roman Banquet! We discovered that a lot of food was brought to Rome by boat from other countries. We learnt that some food we have today was considered a really big treat back then. We also found out that there were no supermarkets like we have today.

We tried goat's cheese, figs, dates, olives, pear and fruit cake. Lots of us tried new foods today that we haven't had before.

Right Angle Hunt

Date: 1st Mar 2022 @ 12:47pm

Today we began our 2D shape unit in maths. We discussed all the things we already know about 2D shapes. We could name loads of different shapes!

We spoke about the different angles in the angle family, obtuse angles, acute angles and right angles. We used our angle eaters to find different angles in the classroom and in our outside space too. Check out the pictures to see all the different right angles we could find. We found then on doors, books, benches and even the displays too!

We can't wait to continue exploring all things shape.

Soil in Science

Date: 8th Feb 2022 @ 3:47pm

Our focus in science this half term is rocks, fossils and soil.

Today, we looked at different kinds of soil and how they differ. We discussed how water might pass through them and how different kinds of minibeasts live in them.
We looked closely at the particles of soil and documented our findings in our science books.

It was interesting to see how clay soil, chalk soil and sandy soil all look different and all help different living things.

Check out our scientists at work with their microscopes!

Key Vocabulary

Date: 8th Feb 2022 @ 3:44pm

This week we have been looking at non-fiction texts. We have noticed lots of things about these kinds of texts. We have spotted contents pages, index pages and a glossary.

Today, we highlighted and discussed the meaning of key vocabulary in the text about Stone Age animals.

We used the text to help us work out the definition of the vocabulary.

We are archaeologists!

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 1:25pm

Today we transformed into archaeologists!

To help with our learning about the Stone Age, we asked and answered questions. This week, we have been reading and making notes on different aspects of Stone Age life. We watched an interview with some archeologists and recreated this with our own amazing Stone Age facts.

We can't wait to show off all of our knowledge in our writing next week.

Stone Age Houses DT

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 1:11pm

This half term we have been learning about the Stone Age in our CC lessons. We discovered how different dwellings were built and which materials and tools were used.

We have been designing our own Stone Age dwelling, which we will then build using our DT skills. First, we created a mood board to gather all of our ideas. Next, we thought of our initial ideas for our designs. Today, we investigated the different materials that we will be using in our construction. This helped us to think about how we can construct our final design next week.

Watch this space for our amazing creations coming soon!

This week in 3MS

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 12:55pm

We have had a very busy week in year 3 this week!

We started looking at fractions using shapes. We have been using the language of 'numerator', 'denominator' and 'equal parts'. Our challenge was to order the fractions and then to match the fraction to the decimal place. Check out how we did in the photos.

This half term we will be learning about The Stone Age in our connected curriculum lessons. For our launch, we explored Stone Henge through Google Earth and thought about who put it there and what it might have been used for. We used our comparison skills to spot the changes over time from the Stone Age to modern day. We even had a go at recreating Stone Henge out of biscuits!

Our Amazon Launch!

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 12:10pm

Yesterday, we tried different foods which could be found in the rainforest. We had lots of fun!
