Vlad and the Great Fire of London

We made our own puppets for the story of Vlad and the Great Fire of London.

We performed the story of Vlad and the Great Fire of London with our puppets.

Yesterday we thought about what it would be like to be in London when the great fire was happening.
We acted out how we thought people would be responding during the time of the fire.
Talitha - I was feeling sad because six people died.
Tiwan - I was feeling upset because people were homeless.
Noah - I was sad because the city was burning down.
Aaron - we were running to get buckets of water to try and stop the fire.
Lacey - we got some gunpowder to try and make a firebreak!
Rahman - we made a firebreak to try and stop the fire from spreading.
Annabelle - a firebreak is a gap between the houses to try and stop the fire.
Daniel - we were rowing a boat because we needed to get out of London
Millie - we pulled down houses using a firehook.
Payton - a fire hook is a big pole that was used to pull down houses.

This week we are learning all about Samuel Pepys and why he is an important person to remember when we are thinking about the Great Fire of London.
We are going to write our own diary entries, imagining that we were there. We will need to think about what we could see, smell, touch, taste and hear and also describe how we would be feeling. To do this we are going to be doing some role play!
Here are some examples of a diary entry we have written so far ...
Wake up! Wake up! Dad shook me awake in my bed. He had some terrifying news! London is on fire and 300 houses have already burned down. We raced out of the house into the street because the fire was spreading to our house.
One dark night my mum woke me up in my bed. She said that London is on fire and we need to leave our house! We raced to the bakery so the baker could explain what happened. The baker explained that he had started the fire. My mum was crying because she was so worried!
What a fabulous start to our diary writing! I cannot wait to read some more!

This week in our English lessons we have been learning how to write a glossary using Great Fire of London terminology.

Today we had a wonderful science morning with Mrs Ranyard (Y6) who was very impressed with our scientific knowledge and understanding of how plants grow. We spent some time outside observing lots of the different plants, flowers and trees that grow in our playground. We had lots of fun observing and sketching leaves and flowers as well as naming and measuring the plants we found. WE ARE SUPER SCENTISTS!

Spelling in Year 2
Children have five spellings to learn for each week of this half term. Please take time each week to help your child learn their spellings. The impact of learning their spellings can be seen in their reading and writing throughout the curriculum and is so important.
Children will still be tested each Monday on the spellings listed for that week by writing them in dictated sentences.

We had so much fun last week electing our new school council representative. The children made campaign posters, made speeches and answered questions from the voters. We enjoyed taking part and were so proud of our new representative.

Spelling in Year 2
As part of our school improvement goals to improve spelling at Ravensbury we will be using a new spelling programme called No Nonsense Spelling.
Spelling lists will be sent home at the beginning of each half term. Please practice the five spellings for each week with your child at home using a range of strategies.
Children will still be tested each Monday on the spellings listed for that week.

Why Can't we Just Eat Chocolate?

We asked 'Why Can't we Just Eat Chocolate?' to help the children in Year 2 learn about taking care of their bodies.
We launhced our topic with chocolate tasting and learning where chocolate came from.
The children learned about what to eat and comapred the sugar in popular foods. They experimented with exercise and learned about the impact on our bodies. They even made their own fitness videos!
The children learned about keeping themselves rested and clean as part of a healthy lifestyle. We went back in time to learn how Florence Nightingale changed hospitals.

We baked bread to launch our Great Fire of London topic.
We asked 'What Happened in Pudding Lane?' and the children learned that a fire in a bakery started the Great Fire of London.

In Year 2 we used our scientific enquiry skills to predict what would happen when we used food coloring in milk to make dancing fireworks. We investigated the impact of the amount of washing up liquid to really get things moving.

The children wrote a hypothesis and then wrote and drew the outcome of their investigation.

Today we have been really lucky as we met Naomi Otbega, who is a triple jumper for team GB. First we went to a special assembly where she told us all about competing in different countries. Some of us even got to hold her European Bronze medal!
Naomi told us that in order for her to be so successful she has to train extremely hard, but its just as important to believe in yourself and never give up.
Later we went outside where Naomi taught us the long jump technique. We practiced hop,step and jump. We competed in two teams (Rabbits vs Kangaroos) and the winners were…IT WAS A DRAW!
Naomi really inspired us to dream big and now lots of us want to be in team GB too!

Today we completed our independent writing. Miss Dooley was so pleased with how hard we have tried. We had to write diary entries pretending that we were a child caught up in The Great Fire of London.

On Monday, we started our new English topic. We read a diary that belonged to somebody who was writing on Sunday 2nd September 1666. We know that this is the day that The Great Fire of London started. We used this diary to help us perform some drama. We acted in role as children during the Great Fire. We pretended to be asleep and listened to noises of fire. We coughed because we decided there would be lots of smoke. We then discussed how we would have felt.
“I felt worried because the fire might come to my street” Lourdes.
“I felt upset because I didn’t want to leave my warm, safe bed.” Logan
“I felt curious, I wanted to know how the fire started”. Emma
“I felt nervous because the fire could burn down my house”. Beatriz
We used this drama to begin to write diaries of our own using our experiences.

This week in our maths lessons we have been learning about doubles and halves. We have continued our work from Year 1, but now we are in Year 2, we can use our mental strategies. This means we can recall our double and halves facts fluently.
To help improve our fluency we have been playing and online game.
Our best score so far is 23…..can anyone beat this by practicing at home?

The Great Fire of London – Launch day

Today we started our new topic. Our topic is called ‘Could The Great Fire of London happen in Clayton’. To get us excited about the topic we pretended to be Thomas Farriner the baker from Pudding Lane. We made bread and it took a long time! To make the bread we used; flour, yeast, sugar, salt water and butter. We had to leave our dough to prove and rise. We all made a bread roll each to take home.
We have made Great Fire of London pictures using strips of tissue paper and we are going to use these for our front covers.
We learned some important facts about The Great Fire of London:
Yinka – “The fire started on a Sunday”
Alexander – “The Great Fire of London happened 351 years ago in 1666”
Asa – “The people of London used leather buckets filled with water from the river Thames to try and put the fire out.”
Ruby – “Their is a famous statue to remember the people who died”.
Vian – “Samuel Pepys wrote a diary about The Great Fire of London”.
We played a quiz to test our knowledge. We have only been learning about The Great Fire of London for one day but we still did really well!

Today we checked our potatoes. They smelt disgusting (Alfie).They were all mouldy (Hadia). The potato that had been outside was the worst! (Declan). It had mould and juice was all in the bottom of the bag! The potato that had only been touched with clean hands had hardly any mould. Completing this experiment has helped us to learn it is important to keep our hands clean. We looked at our predictions, most people had guessed correctly! Nobody had said that the clean potato would have the most mould.

Today we conducted an experiment to see how quickly and easily germs are spread around our classroom. We each wet our hand and got a friend to pour glitter onto it. we shook hands with our friends and gave high fives. Soon there was glitter everywhere! we tried to wipe the glitter off with a paper towel but it didn’t work very well. We had to wash our hands with soap and water to get all the glitter away.
We found out that this exactly how germs are spread even though we cant see them as easily as the glitter. Every time we touch something we are spreading germs. We found out that most of these germs are harmless but some of them can make us sick.
We decided that is important to wash our hands, before we eat, after playing outside and also when we have coughed and sneezed.

Monday 2nd October 2017
Today we checked on our potatos. All of them had a little bit of white mould growing around the edges but they all looked quite similar. We will check on them again on Wednesday.

In our creative curriculum we have been learning how to stay healthy. We read a story about a dirty wolf called Whiffy Wilson. The wolf who never washed. After reading this we have learned that its important to stay clean.
On Friday the 29th of September we decided to do a science experiment to test where the dirtiest place in our school is.
We cut a potato into 4 pieces. The first piece went straight into a bag. This is our clean potato. The second potato was passed around the class. Everyone touched it with their hands. Then we put this potato in a separate bag. Miss Dooley took the third piece outside and rolled it on the floor and in a muddy puddle. We put this potato in a bag.The last potato was wiped around in the girls toilets. Then we put it in a bag.
We predicted which potato would grow mould the quickest. We decided that dirty potatoes would grow the most mould. Whichever potato is the mouldiest will have been in the dirtiest place. We will keep our bags of potato in the same place so it is a fair test. We will check our potatos everyday and see if our predictions are correct.
