Beating Hearts

Date: 26th Sep 2023 @ 7:51pm

To launch our connected curriculum topic, 'Why can't we just eat chocolate? We explored how exercise changes our heart rate. We took part in four different activities, which included dribbling, balancing, racing, and throwing. We noticed that all the activities caused our hearts to beat much quicker, but we discovered that the quicker we moved, the faster our hearts beat.

Printing

Date: 20th Sep 2023 @ 5:27pm

In art this week, we made our own printing blocks. We used foam to draw a fruit or vegetable, which we then cut out. Also, we used a pencil to create ridges and marks that would show up when we printed. We stuck our foam on cardboard, which then became our printing blocks. We used two different colours of paint on the blocks, which we then used to print.

Fruit Printing

Date: 12th Sep 2023 @ 5:04pm

For our connected curriculum topic, 'Why can't we just eat chocolate?' We have been learning about a balanced diet. As part of our art lesson, we thought about different fruits and vegetables we could eat. Then we used a variety of different fruits and vegetables to print with. We created different patterns by printing with the fruit and vegetables, which we put on bunting to display around school.

Date: 3rd Jun 2020 @ 8:01am

As you know this month our school is going WILD! Here’s today’s challenge. I found this challenge on the free 30 Days Wild app. You can download it on the App Store or Google Play Store.

Just because it’s raining out there it doesn’t mean you can’t go wild! Get your Peppa on and pull on some wellies to dance in the rain.

Send your photos or short videos in and I'll put them up on our school blog

nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

PLEASE BE CAREFUL and make sure you complete the challenges with an adult.

Half term challenges

Date: 22nd May 2020 @ 11:16am

Good morning Year 2. It's me again!

Today is our last day of home learning until the 26th May so I thought I would share some fun activities for you to do incase you would like to take on an extra challenge. Don't worry adults, the extra challenges are not compulsary so if you would like a break, that is ok too :)

I know that you know your phase 5 sounds, so instead of looking at your sounds on the Thursday challenge, why don't you have a go at learning some of the year 2 common exception words instead and try and put them in to sentences?

Have a lovely break and I can't wait to see what you have all been up to :)

Tuesday Challenge

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 10:10am

Good morning Year 2!

I am so excited today. I have been working really hard on something new to show you. Instead of posting all of our daily activities on our blog, I have decided to create a padlet where you can see all of you daily and weekly tasks and some extra links all in the same place. It is still important to check the blog each day as I may still post some extra information or learning on here too :)

Here is the link to our new Padlet -https://padlet.com/y2homelearning/obn2yxcgbsitjnx5

Adults: Please let me know via email if you find it easier on the Padlet or if there is anything you would like me to change. I want to make home learning easy for you as well as for the children.

Go and have a look. I hope you love it as much as me :)

Mental Health awareness week

Date: 18th May 2020 @ 10:54am

This week we are celebrating mental health awareness week. I know that things may be a little different at the moment and some of you may be finding the change a little difficult and thats ok! I have some down days too! I thought I would share some ideas with you to help think about our mental health. This year the theme is kindness.

  1. First of all, I would like you to read the book attached ‘What's going on inside my head?’. You don't have to read it all at once. You could read a page per day this week. I loved reading it this morning as it made me realise we are all unique in our own way :).
  2. Think of the things that make you feel happy or calm. I know that having a bubble bath makes me feel relaxed. I would like you to write 5 things down that make you feel happy. Can you create a poster to put up in your household with things that make you feel happy? That way if someone is feeling down, they can always look at it for ideas to cheer them up.
  3. Can you write down 5 kind words to describe somebody in your household?
  4. Can you do something helpful for somebody in your house? You could clean your bedroom or make them their favourite breakfast. Don’t forget you must always ask an adult for their permission to you use the kitchen.
  5. Can you complete 30 minutes of cosmic kids yoga to make you feel relaxed?

I would love to see what you get up to this week during mental health awareness week. If you have any other ideas, I would love to share them with the rest of the class :)

I know that you have been working really hard learning all about time at home. You should be feeling a little more confident when looking at o’clock and half past the hour now.

If you would like a little more practice, why don’t you play the time game with an adult in your house? An adult must say a time and you have to try make it on the clock! Give it a go at:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/time/teaching-clock

The challenge is to use as many of our new words as possible!

Reading Challenge

I would like you to read the book attached with help from an adult. If you cannot see all of the words, do not panic. Just listen to the audio instead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uf4b4no8ric . I would then like you to answer the questions below. I don’t expect you to answer them all in one go. Why don’t you try and answer a few questions per day? That way you will become more familiar with the book and the characters :)

1.On page 2, the author uses rhyme. What two words rhyme in the extract below?

But his stripes were too straight and his tentacles too few,

he just floated in the sea not sure what to do

7.How does the author describe the shell on page 18?

8.What does the story teach you about why it is important to pick up your rubbish?

Science Challenge

This term, we have been looking at directions. As one of your challenges, I asked you to google your postcode to become more familiar with your surroundings. Whilst we have been off school, I am sure many of you have been going on daily walks to get out of the house. As an extra challenge this week, I would like you to note down any directions you have taken whilst on your daily walks. Do you always go the same route?

Have a great day!

Miss Hamer’s recycling pictures

Over Christmas, I visited Stockholm with my friends. We visited a museum all about recycling and it made me think about global warming and how to try and help save the planet. I have attached some pictures that I took to help you understand why it is so important that we recycle.

Have a great day. Hopefully the sun will be back soon :(

Monday Challenge

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 10:23am

Good morning year 2,

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend in the sunshine. Here goes Miss Hamer’s long Monday morning blog…

English challenge

We have all been living a very different life over the past few weeks. Without realising, most of us have started a new daily routine. I know I have! Using the time connectives below, I would like you to write down a few things that you do in your day to day life (or one specific day) whilst you have been off school. Remember, if you are writing about something you did yesterday, you must write in past tense.

first, next, then, later, after, eventually, finally, following that.

Here is an example of what I did on Friday:

First I got up and made my breakfast. I had strawberries, grapes and yogurt.

Then I logged on to my computer and checked the Year 2 school blog.

After that I brushed my teeth and got dressed.

Next I did a long workout in my garden.

Then I had a hot bubble bath and put on clean clothes.

In the afternoon I continued with my jigsaw.

Several hours later I went on my daily walk. I enjoyed it because it was nice and sunny outside.

Following that I made my delicious tea and watched TV.

Finally I put on my pink pyjamas, brushed my teeth and got in to bed to read my non-fiction book.

Maths challenge

Read the word problems below and answer them independently.

  1. 12 children are at a party. they each eat 2 cakes. how many cakes are eaten altogether?
  2. There are four wheels on one car. How many wheels will be on ten cars?
  3. Eddie gave half of his trains to his brother. He now has 40 trains. How many trains did he have to start with?
  4. Gary is 14, his sister Jane is 6 years younger. How old is Jane?
  5. Crisps cost 20p and drinks cost 15p. What is the difference in price?
  6. Can you write down a sentence to describe the similarities between a cube and cuboid? (remember when we are talking about a 3-d shape ‘corners’ are called vertices).

Keep an eye on tomorrow’s blog for the answers!

Vocab challenge

Looking at the words below, which three are the most important words when looking at the topic recycling?

Waste

South Pole

Decompose

Plastic

Aluminium

Extinct

Continents

Explorer

Environment

I would like you to write three sentences explaining why you have chosen the three words to be the most important when discussing recycling. For example ‘global warming is important when looking at recycling because it teaches us about how rubbish pollutes our environment and how it will affect the globe in the future’.

Reading challenge

Last week I awarded three children with a Lexia reading certificate. Lets see if we can beat that this week!

Connected curriculum challenge

I would like you to have a look at the quotes below. Using your knowledge from what you have learned over the past few weeks, have a think whether the quotes are true or false. I would then like you to write down your answers and discuss with an adult WHY you think they are true/false.

1. Products made of more than one material cannot be recycled.

2. The statue of Liberty is covered by 80 tonnes of recycled copper and bronze plating.

3. Only 75% of waste is recyclable but we only recycle 30% of it.

4. Everything can only be recycled once.

5. Recycling 100 cans can light up your bedroom for two weeks.

Good morning everyone,

I don't know about you but I can't wait to get out in that sun so today's challenge is one that can be done outside if you like.

Today we are focusing on having a growth mindset and doing this through yoga. Having a growth mindset means you have a positive attitude to your learning and know that just because you may find something difficult and you can't do it yet, you will get there as long as you don't give up!

Here are 5 different growth mindset yoga poses to try. Please feel free to try as many or as few positions as you like and send any pictures to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

I have attached a brilliant outdoor hunt sheet that I would love to share with you all. There is a number next to each photo based on how difficult the objects are to find. I would like you to make a tally chart of how many times you see the objects on your daily walk and then work out the total using the numbers on the hunt sheet.

Have a great day.
