Wednesday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 20th May 2020 @ 9:25am

Good Morning everyone!

Sentence of the day

Here are the answers to yesterday’s sentence. If you noticed that the capital letters were missing then you were correct! Well done!

I see a strand of hair on the screen.

On Monday Steve sprinted to school.

The stray dog scratched and scratched his head.

Put on your detective hat and have a look, what is the mistake in today’s sentence?

Football teams have substitutes

Tigers wear joggers_

Elephants can walk backwards_

Cheetahs are the fastest animal_

Phonics

Today we are going to start our phonics by recapping the polysyllabic words from yesterday. Make some number cards with the numbers 1,2,3,4 on and place them in different places in your room. Watch and listen to the syllable song. Once you have clapped, stomped or crunched the syllables run to the number which shows how many syllables that word has.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlBc703kYMg

For example if the word is pondweed I will do two stamps and run to the number 2.

Today’s phonics is all about our tricky words again.

Challenge one – Play a game of fastest finger. How fast can you find the tricky words?

Challenge two – Try and complete the tic-tac-toe grid. How many of the challenges can you tick off.

Challenge three- seen as though it’s a lovely day today it would be a shame to not do any phonics outside. So if you are outside today can you find different materials like twigs and stones and spell out your tricky words in different ways.

Hope you all have a lovely day, stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

Wednesday 20th May - Maths

Date: 20th May 2020 @ 8:52am

Good Morning Reception!

Happy Wednesday – we are half-way through the week! J

Let’s begin our maths learning with a fluent-in-five!

This week in our maths blogs, we have been learning about how our numbers can be represented by using ‘tens frames.’ We can also use tens frames to help us with our addition and subtraction skills!

This morning I have posted a catchy ‘Tens Frame’ song at the bottom of this blog! Not only is it a great song, but it also tells us about a ‘counting on’ activity to play when using tens frames!

Today I have adapted this activity for you to take part in at home…we are going to be making our own tens frame! You could use different resources to make this, for example egg boxes, paper, lollipop sticks. To fill your tens frame, you could make your own counters if you do not have any at home or you could use any small objects instead! Your choice! Take a look at the different tens frames below…

The Activity:

Once you have made your tens frame, ask an adult at home to think of a number for you to count items into the tens frame. E.g If your adult says ‘3’, you have to put 3 items into your tens frame. Don’t forget the number you are beginning with!!

Then, you must cover your eyes or turn away!!

Your adult is going to either add or take away items from the tens frame and give you a clue to help you work out how many items you have now– without peeping!! E.g Child to cover eyes, adult to say… ‘I have added one more item, how many items are in the tens frame now?’

See if you can work it out without looking! Once you’ve had a go – uncover your eyes and see if you were correct! Then you can have a turn at testing your adult at home!! How fun! J

I’ve also added the link to the interactive tens frame if you would like some extra tens frame learning! J https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

I can’t wait to see pictures of your own tens frames! Enjoy!

Wednesday 20th May

Date: 20th May 2020 @ 8:51am

Good morning Year 5!

I've been looking forward to today all week because I knew the forecast is lovely warm sunshine for the whole day! I think Livvi, Asaph and I will just do a couple of homeschool activities this morning, then I'll get the paddling pool out for them! Then a friend of ours dropped round a lovely bag of treats for us yesterday so that we could have an afternoon tea today - isn't that so kind! What could you do that is kind today?

Remember to email us at Y5homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to show us your learning and what you're getting up to, we love hearing from you!

--

Mrs Hodges here!

Two activities from me today, firstly the Sentence of the Day:

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=hsW4UVc

Then I'd like you to have a look at the file I've attached - "The Discovery". A start to a story has been given to you - I'd like you to continue that story! The questions in the "Question Time" box will get you thinking about what might happen next, and as you "Just Write" (remember those!), I'd like you to be thinking about showing not telling the reader how your characters are feeling and what is happening. So you need to think carefully about your vocabulary choices and mixing DAD to help you do this.

We would love to be your reader for this piece of writing, so make sure you email us a photo!

Good afternoon Year 5!

Firstly, our afternoon tea was delicious, it felt like such a treat as I was writing a few reports!

How did you get on with today's sentence? Click the link below to see my corrected sentence!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=B9PI0Dw

--

Miss Wendt here!

Mrs Hodges, I think a paddling pool sounds like a wonderful idea! I'm going to finish writing 5HW's reports in the garden later; I do love being outside but I have to remember to take all my hayfever medication. Katy's act of kindness today was to put all my tablets and eye drops out on the kitchen table to remind me, alongside a pot of coffee!

Fluent in five for today!

And here are the answers!

--

Good Morning from Miss Brookes!

Oh Mrs Hodges, afternoon tea is one of my favourite things! There's a place in Chortlon that do a chocolate afternoon tea - instead of jam you get warm salted caramel to put on your scones. It's honestly one of my favourite tastes - it's so yummy!

My act of kindness today is to help my Dad with some DIY - he's adding a shelf to our greenhouse.

Here is today's GVP:

Here are the answers:

Don't forget to email me a picture of your sundial - I'm excited to see how they turned out!

Wednesday 20th May Reading

Date: 20th May 2020 @ 8:17am

Good Morning Reception!!

In our story ‘The Snail and the Whale’ they were two main characters: the snail and the whale. Today we will be learning about the kinds of animals snails and slugs are.

First, look at this picture of a snail and slug. What do you think you already know…? What can you see? Where do you think they live? What do you think they eat?

Today I would like you to read the facts about snails and slugs with a grown up. What have you learnt about these minibeasts…?

Write three facts that you have learnt on the sheet attached to the blog or on a piece of paper.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 10

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 3:09pm

Hi everyone! Well guess who answered first? Yes Maddison. Well done to Maddison for keeping up with our spooky story!

She has decided to leave the room and try the left door. Sounds good to me- I didn't fancy the idea of drinking the Werewolf's blood! Yuck!

Well here goes; off to the left now...

You choose the door on the left and walk into a bathroom. The stench of mould and decay is overpowering and you feel sick almost instantly. Your head starts pounding and you feel nauseous with the pain. You glance towards the sink and see a steady stream of cool, clean water pouring from the tap.

That may just ease the throbbing pain in your head.

Do you:

Drink some water

Stagger from the bathroom and open the right door?

What should we do? The water does sound very refreshing though.

Quiz 19.5.20

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 11:00am

Good morning,

Wow yesterday's flag challenge was difficult! In fact I'm not even sure on one of the answers so keep an eye on the blog and I'll add it on later!

Well done to Maddison, Heer and Ganesa who knew that it was the Egyptian flag! Everyone had slightly different ideas on who lived there 5000 years ago and I'm not 100% sure what answer Mrs Harriott had in mind so I'll update this as soon as I know!

Update - Mrs Harriott was thinking of the Anicent Egyptians who lived there 5000 years ago, I think some of us were trying to make it too complicated! :-D

Today's quiz

What flag is this? What is the capital of the country? Which other city in this country uses excatly the same letters as the capital city? (also known as an anagram)

As always let us know what you think the answer is on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Wellbeing challenge 19.5.20

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 10:26am

Good morning,

I hope everyone is well and taking good care of their mental health this week. We are still looking at kindness today and how important kindness is to keep everyone happy and healthy. Today's challenge will hopefully help everyone to see that kindness is all around us and I bet there are things that others do for us (and that we do for others!) that we barely even think about.

Today we're going to draw a kindness heart.

First of all draw a large heart on a piece of paper. Then on the left hand side write all the things that people do for you that are kind, all in different colours. Then on the right hand side write all the kind things that you do for others in different colours. If you can't think of many then maybe have a think of things that you could do. The acts of kindness could be as simple as just smiling at someone or saying good morning.

Here is mine if you would like to steal some ideas!

If you would like to share your kindness hearts then as always please feel free to e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Past challenges

Thanks to Mrs Iqbal who sent me her kind acts for the week!

Well done to the children that are still sending in their mask designs as well as their kindsness acts (one here has even made his mum a cup of tea and some biscuits!)

Reading and writing challenges

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 10:13am

Reading challenge

This weeks reading challenge is to try and level up on Lexia.

https://www.lexiacore5.com/register

If you are unsure of how to log in have a look on the blog post titled Lexia and active learn, you’ll find all the information you need there. If you are still struggling send us an email and we will be happy to help you J

Writing challenge

For this weeks writing challenge you will be using the bug hotels that you made the other week. Don’t worry if you didn’t get chance to make one or if you can’t find yous, you can just make one this week before you do your writing challenge.

This week I would like you to write your own instructions on how to make a bug hotel. Use this check list to make sure you have everything you need in your instructions

Bossy verbs are our words like put, fill, find, add, peep. They are words that are bossing about the person who is reading the instructions. These words usually come at the start of your instruction, just after your time connective. For example, First fill your pot with water.

Time terms are your time connectives – first, next, then, after that, finally

If you need a little help writing your instructions then watch the video all about how to make a bug hotel and read the instructions below. Remember these are your own instructions, so if you made the bug hotel in a different order then that’s ok J

Tuesday Sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 10:11am

Good Morning everyone!

We hope you are all awake and ready for your home learning. If your brain doesn’t quite want to wake up this morning then maybe have a dance or do some yoga to get it woken up and ready to learn J

Sentence of the day

Here are the answers to yesterday’s sentences…

Could the elephants stand on their heads?

Did Mrs Green ask Mr Green for some cake?

Oh wow shouted the people when the dolphin flipped in the air.

Have a look at today’s sentences what are they all missing?

i see a strand of hair on the screen.

on monday steve sprinted to school/

the stray dog scratched and scratched his head.

Phonics

Let’s start our phonics by quickly recapping some of those three letter consonant blends. Have a look at the different pictures below. Which blend is missing from each word? You don’t have to write these down if you don’t want to, just say the consonant blend that you think is missing.

Today’s phonics focusses on polysyllabic words. Polysyllabic words are words that have more than one syllable for example windmill has two syllables – wind-mill, Saturday has three syllables – sat-ur-day.  Syllables in a word always contain a vowel – A, E , I, O U. It is useful to know this to make decoding words easier. When we read polysyllabic words we chunk them up to make them easier to read.

Challenge one – Watch the video and find the syllables in the different words. Don’t forget to do the actions as they will help you to understand how many syllables are in a word.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlBc703kYMg

Challenge two – Read the words, clap out the syllables and decide how many syllables each word has. Colour in the syllables in different colours

 For example towel

Challenge three- Now look at the different pictures. Say the word that you see and write it down. Use the syllables you hear to help you.

Hope you all have a lovely day!

Good morning Year 2!

I am so excited today. I have been working really hard on something new to show you. Instead of posting all of our daily activities on our blog, I have decided to create a padlet where you can see all of you daily and weekly tasks and some extra links all in the same place. It is still important to check the blog each day as I may still post some extra information or learning on here too :)

Here is the link to our new Padlet -https://padlet.com/y2homelearning/obn2yxcgbsitjnx5

Adults: Please let me know via email if you find it easier on the Padlet or if there is anything you would like me to change. I want to make home learning easy for you as well as for the children.

Go and have a look. I hope you love it as much as me :)

Tuesday 19th May

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 8:50am

Hello Year 5!

Did you manage to do an act of kindness yesterday I wonder? Livvi made me a birthday breakfast, which I thought was very kind! What could you do today that's kind to yourself or to someone else? Perhaps you could write a letter to a family member or friend who you haven't seen for a while, or perhaps you could help your grown up around the house (offering to help with dinner, or hoovering, or keeping your room tidy!)? Let us know what you get up to!

--

Mrs Hodges here!

Are you ready for our second Sentence of the Day for this week? Here we go!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=Ebcqz1k

Good afternoon!

We've just got back from a little bike ride to our friends' house to drop off some carrot cake cupcakes as our act of kindness for today! It's getting very warm outside - I think tomorrow looks like it'll be very hot!

Click the link below to see the corrected sentence for today!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=5YnGc7c

--

Good Morning from Miss Wendt!

Like Mrs Hodges I've been thinking about kindness too. Sometimes the smallest things can have the biggest impact. Let us know today what you have done to be kind to others.

My act of kindness today is to make Katy a pot of tea. Katy has lots of meetings all day, so I know she will appreciate it. I know it doesn't seem like a big thing, but for me it is. The smell of tea makes me feel really ill, and the taste of tea is actually enough to make me sick. In fact, I accidentally drank someone's tea once and was sick in the sink in Y3/4!

Here is today's fluent in five!

I have to say I did laugh at Miss Brookes being shocked that I don't like tea! Here are the answers for today's fluent in five.

--

Good Morning Year 5! From Miss Brookes

I have to say, I am shocked. I have never met someone who dislikes tea! Tea always makes me feel better if I'm stressed, how can someone not enjoy that luxury?

Today's act of kindness, is for my step-niece. She doesn't have any brothers or sisters, it's her Dads first day back at work today, and her step-mum works all day from home. So she'll be feeling a little lonely. My act of kindness today, is to find some time this evening is to cheer her up by playing Animal Crossing on the switch, with her - she loves to take her character into my world and play virtual hide and seek!

Here is today's GVP work:

If you get stuck on any of the terms, here's a link to all of the videos we have done so far:

Adverbials

Adverbs of Possibility 1

Adverbs of Possibility 2

Apostrophes

Commas for Meaning

Determiners 1

Determiners 2

Homophones

Modal Verbs

Parenthesis

Phrases for Cohesion

Prefixes

Relative Clauses

Relative Pronouns

Suffixes

You just click on the one that you can't remember, and it takes you back to that video. I was surprised when I created this list for you - I couldn't believe how long it was! We have got so much learning done, well done everyone. I'll add the answers at 1pm.

Here are the answers:

Now onto today's Science.

Today's science is a practical task, and I have attached a worksheet to help you (remember to click on the link at the bottom of the blog post).

This week, I would like you to create a sundial. A sundail can be used to tell the time, based on where a shadow might be. As we discussed right at the start of this unit, the Sun looks like it's moving across the sky, even though it isn't - it is just the Earth's rotation. When the Earth spins, and we're facing different parts of the sun, we create different shadows.

I've attached a Gnomon template for you to use (gnomon means 'shadow maker')

Here are the instructions:

1. Carefully cut out the gnomon and attach it ot the sundial. Make sure that it stands vertically.

2. At exactly midday (12pm), take you sundial outside. Place it on the ground and rotatae it so that the shadow cast by the gnomon falls on the 12pm marker. Make sure that you do not move the sundial from this position, or it won't work properly.

3. Calibrate your sundial. At 1pm, use a ruler and a pencil to mark the line of the shadow cast by the gnomon. Label this line 1pm (the instructions with the template says 2pm, that is an error and it should say 1pm).

4. Repeat at 2pm and 3pm.

5. The next day, mark the shadow lines at 9am, 10am and 11am.

And then your sundial will be complete! Don't forget to email us pictures of your sundial - I can't wait to see them!

Tuesday 19th May - Maths

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 7:17am

Good Morning Reception!

Are you ready for your maths learning today?

Here is a fluent-in-five for you to begin with! How quickly can you answer these calculations below?? Can you work them out with your adult at home and see you if you can beat their time??

Yesterday in our maths blog, we were looking at how our numbers can be represented through using ‘tens frames.’ We were looking at how to answer addition questions using tens frames to help us! Please refer to yesteday’s Maths blog if you did not see it!

Today we are going to be using tens frame to help us to...

Recognise our numbers being shown in different ways

Help us with early addition skills

Here is a link to the interactive tens frame we were using yesterday, you can have a go at these activities to begin with! https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

Below I have posted links to some different activities when working out with tens frame:

The first activity is a ‘tens frame matching game!’ You have to look closely at the tens frame and work out the correct number of counters in them. There may be some other numbers there to trick you – see if you can work out which numeral matches the tens frame correctly!

How many counters are in this ten frame? What would the correct answer be?

The second activity is a ‘number bonds to ten’ activity. You have to carefully count the orange counters in the tens frame and work out how many more counters you need to add to work out the total answer. There is a number sentence underneath, you need to fill in the empty box which represents the blue counters!

Can you count the orange counters? Can you count the blue counters? Can you add on from 5 to work out how many there are all together? Fill in your answer in the empty box!

Have fun! J

Tuesday 19th May Writing

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 7:05am

Good Morning Reception!!

Today I would like you to think about where the whale took the snail on his back. In the story the whale took the snail to lots of different places around the world including…

The Antarctica where they saw penguins.

A desert island with lots of palm trees and a volcano.

In the deep ocean.

A place with lots of mountains and bears gazing at them.

I want you to imagine if you were the snail where would you like the whale to take you. It could be…

A place like a desert, cold area or with lots of mountains.

It could be a country, maybe one that you have already visited.

It could be a made-up place.

Use the sheet attached to finish this sentence:

If I were a snail, I would want the whale to take me to…

If you are in Mrs Iqbal and Mrs Cooper's phonic groups use the connective 'because' to give a reason why you would visit that place.

For example,

I would like the whale to take me to New York in America because I want to see the Statue of Liberty.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Tuesday 19th May Phonics

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 7:00am

Good Morning Reception!!

Let’s start today’s phonic activity by recapping our Phase 3 tricky words. Start by singing and joining in with the tricky word song at the bottom of this blog.

Now play quick write using the Phase 3 tricky words. Your grown up will say a tricky word and you must write it correctly. Choose 2 tricky words and put them in your own sentences.

Sing along to the ‘ar’ song on the video at the bottom of the blog. How many words will you be able to read…?

Today’s practise and apply activities are:

Activity 1 – Choose some of the words from the ‘ar’ song and play treasure hunt. Write the words on scraps of paper and hide them in a room inside or in the garden. When you find a word read it and write it.

Activity 2 – Play ‘ar’ roll and read.

Activity 3 – Write the ‘ar’ word under each picture.

Activity 4 – Play Dragons Den on Phonics Play using this link  https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/dragons-den

Click on the ‘ar’ sound to read the real and fake words.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to… receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Tuesday's maths

Date: 19th May 2020 @ 6:17am

Hello,

Today we are going to focus on measuring - length

When we compare and talk about the length of an obect we use words like short, shorter, shortest, long, longer, longest, longer than and shorter than.

Watch the videos below to see how you can use this language to compare the length of objects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_97AO2SkGU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryIxBrO1bY

Remember when we are measurung the length of something we are finding out how long it is.

Challenge 1

Find 3 objects from around the house and put them in order from the shortest to the longest.

Then say and write the following sentences.

The ........................is the shortest.

The ........................is the longest.

The .......................is longer than ..................... but shorter than the ....................................

The ............................. is shorter than the ...............................................

The.................................is longer than the ............................................

Challenge 2

Complete the longer and shorter activities at the bottom of the page.

Now watch the following link so that you know how to measure the length of an object using non standard measures. Have a go at completing the activities.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbwc92p

Challenge 3

Complete the 'How many feet'challenge at the bottom of the page.

Climate Change Warriors

Date: 18th May 2020 @ 5:19pm

This week we are continuing our CC topic on Climate Change and now that we have researched some of the causes and problems of cimate change we are going to find out about some famous people who are striving hard to change the way we live and to protect our planet.

Do you recognise these Climate Change Warriors?

Sir David Attenborough

DaDame me Jane Goodall

Greta Thunberg

Sir David Attenborough     Dame Jane Goodall     Greta Thunberg

This week’s task is to choose at least one of these “Climate Change Heroes” and find out what they have to say about the challenges the world faces in dealing with climate change, how they have helped educate the world about these problems and what they suggest everyone can do to play their part.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/45880639

https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/00000144-0a34-d3cb-a96c-7b3d061b0000

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/47467038

https://www.willowprimaryschool.co.uk/sir-david-attenborough/

Again you can present your research in any format. Perhaps you could use your findings to create an “interview” with questions and answers from your favourite warrior. You could create a poster or fact-file, maybe even a news clip or voiceover to a nature clip expressing their views.

Make sure you show what you have learned about your hero and why they are an important person to know about. I hope you have fun finding out about these inspirational people!

Well here we go again...

Maddison was as quick as ever to answer and select what we should do next! She has chosen to 'Investigate the Dressing Table'. Is that what you would have done?

Well here we go; let's see what fate awaits us...

The dressing table is full of ornaments, books, bottles and miscellaneous trinkets. You pick up an elegant bottle and read the label, Werewolf’s Blood. You throw it back to the table, disgusting!

Do you ignore your disgust and drink some blood

Go for a lie down as you are feeling sleepy

Leave and try the left-hand door.

Who will decide what we should do next? Remember we are looking for a ruby heart!

Mental Health Awareness Week

Date: 18th May 2020 @ 10:57am

Did you know that this week is Mental Health Awareness Week?

The theme of this week is all about ‘Kindness.’ In these uncertain times that we are living in now showing and receiving kindness is great for our own mental health. Watch the video at the bottom of this blog to give you more information.

This week we would like you to create a ‘Kindness Jar.’ This is what you need to do…

Get a jar, plastic bowl or any container that you can find at home and label it with something like ________’s Kindness Jar.

Next use the acts of kindness cards for some ideas and choose 7 acts of kindness that you will be able to complete this week. One for each day of the week, including the weekend.

Then write the acts of kindness on scraps of paper or on post it notes.

Fold the paper up and put them in your jar or container.

Each day pull one act of kindness out of your container that you are going to do.

Here is Adam's Kindness Jar. Today he has pulled out the act of ‘thinking about someone in need.’

I wonder what acts of kindness you will do this week...Don't forget to send in photos of your acts of kindness.

Mental Health awareness week

Date: 18th May 2020 @ 10:54am

This week we are celebrating mental health awareness week. I know that things may be a little different at the moment and some of you may be finding the change a little difficult and thats ok! I have some down days too! I thought I would share some ideas with you to help think about our mental health. This year the theme is kindness.

  1. First of all, I would like you to read the book attached ‘What's going on inside my head?’. You don't have to read it all at once. You could read a page per day this week. I loved reading it this morning as it made me realise we are all unique in our own way :).
  2. Think of the things that make you feel happy or calm. I know that having a bubble bath makes me feel relaxed. I would like you to write 5 things down that make you feel happy. Can you create a poster to put up in your household with things that make you feel happy? That way if someone is feeling down, they can always look at it for ideas to cheer them up.
  3. Can you write down 5 kind words to describe somebody in your household?
  4. Can you do something helpful for somebody in your house? You could clean your bedroom or make them their favourite breakfast. Don’t forget you must always ask an adult for their permission to you use the kitchen.
  5. Can you complete 30 minutes of cosmic kids yoga to make you feel relaxed?

I would love to see what you get up to this week during mental health awareness week. If you have any other ideas, I would love to share them with the rest of the class :)
