The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 26
Date: 22nd May 2020 @ 9:43am
Good morning year 6. Isn't it crazy to think we would have finished SATs and be breaking up for summer half term today!
What's more crazy is that we are on our final chapter of our story today and in this chapter you will find out something that will blow your mind. I can't believe the author left this information until the very end.
https://www.showme.com/sh?h=aQPxR0S
I hope you have enjoyed following this story and do not worry we have another new book lined up ready for after half term.
I would like you to write 3 things about the book you found most interesting? It might be the best or worst part, it could be the happiest or saddest moment or something you thought was funny or exciting.
Friday sentence of the day and phonics
Date: 22nd May 2020 @ 9:33am
Good Morning everyone! Can you believe it is Friday all over again?
Sentence of the day
Here are the answers to yesterday’s sentence. If you noticed that I hadnt used a sound mat to write my sentence, then you were correct! Well done!
Wednesday was a glorious day, the sun was shining and the birds were chirping in the tall towering trees.
Have a look at today’s sentence. It’s Friday and I am feeling a little sleepy, so their might be quite a few mistakes in there.
yesterday i tuk a relaxsing stroll to the park. i visited the small pond by the torl warta weeds and wen I looked down I saw hundreds and hundreds of tiny inky black tadpoles_
Phonics
Today we are going to start our phonics by recapping our polysyllabic words. Ask your grown up to say some different words with more than one syllable. Can you clap or stomp or chomp out how many syllables that word has?
For today’s phonics we are going back to tricky words. Today we are going to look at a mixture of phase 3, 4 and 5 tricky words. It’s your job to choose the ones that you find most difficult and practice them.
Challenge one – Watch the tricky word videos. When the video is finished write down any of the words that you found difficult to read or remember. These will be your own unique list of words to practice today. If there are lots of words in phase 3 that you are unsure of then just practice phase three, you can move onto phase 4 and 5 another day J
Phase 3 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri4u0TjAZ38&t=18s
Phase 4 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NOzgR1ANc4&t=6s
Phase 5 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeIbtzh-ALM&t=23s
There isn’t a phase 5 song online so if you fancy making a phase 5 tricky word song for us all and sending it in that would be amazing! There will be a special prize when we return to school for anyone who makes us a catchy song with music!
Challenge two – Now that you have your word list its time to play a game. Today’s game is heads up! For this game you will need a family member who can read the tricky words to play with.
Write the tricky words onto separate pieces of paper. Close your eyes and your partner is going to stick the word onto your head. You need to ask questions to see if you can solve which word is on your head. For example – does it have the letter a in it? Does it have a capital letter?
Challenge three – Now that you have played a game to practice recognising your tricky words, it’s time to put them into sentences. Can you write some silly sentences with your tricky words in?
Hope you all have a lovely day!

Happy Friday!
So this is going to be the last maths lesson for one whole week! We hope you are ready for a challenge. We are going to be doing some problem solving using measures and our knowledge of addition and subtraction. We hope you are ready for this. The work today is not new but you will need to use all the skills that you have been taught over the past weeks in a different way.
Challenge 1- Addition and subtraction involving measures
1. The shed is 10 m long. Miss wolfenden has been given a bike that is 2m long. Will the bike fit in the shed? How much longer is the shed than the bike?
2. The elephant is 7 m long and 2 m wide. The zoo keeper needs to build a new home for the elephant. How long and wide will the home need to be? The elephants friend wants to share the new home with her. Will the zoo keeper need to change the size of the shed?
3. Gerald the Giraffe is hungry and wants to eat the leaves from the Savanna tree. Gerald is 6m tall and the tree is 12m high. Will he be able to reach the leaves on the tree? Is the tree taller than Gerald, if so how many metres taller?
4. One ladder has 10 steps and is 5m high. Miss Riley bought 5 ladders and joined them together. How tall is the ladder now and how many steps does it have?
5. Seraj, Courteous, Joshua, Kaya, Faiz and YuXiang got 5 presents each. How many presents on total? Each present was 2ch long. The children made a line with the presents. How long was the line.
Challenge 2
Remeber! Can you see a number pair to 10?
1. 5cm+ 10cm+ 5cm= 2. 3cm+ 7cm+ 8cm= 3. .6 cm + 8cm + 4cm= 4. 9cm+ 7cm + 1cm=
Challenge 3- repaeted addition
1. 10cm +10cm + 10cm = 2. 5cm +5cm+5cm+ 5cm+5cm+5cm+5cm=
3 .2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm+2cm= 4. 5cm + 5cm + 2cm + 2cm +2cm=
5. 10cm +10cm + 10 cm + 5cm + 5cm + 5cm +5cm =
Challenge 4

Happy Friday Year 5!
Can you believe it, today is the last day before half term next week - that's been a very quick (though also somehow very long) 5 weeks since the Easter holidays!
I don't know about you, but the wind kept waking me up last night, and then I started thinking about the tomato plants I've put outside but not properly planted yet, so I feel a bit tired this morning! I've just checked on them and they had all fallen over, but they seem to be ok!
Anyway, that's my plant update - see below for the activities for today! Remember to think about what your act of kindness could be today!

--
Miss Wendt here!
I think the past 5 weeks have gone so quickly! I never expected them to, as I have been in my house the entire time, but I can honestly say they have. It feels quite strange to be 'breaking up' for half term holidays, I'll miss sending you all a message every day. Although I might slip a sneaky challenge blog, just in case anyone is feeling mathematical!
Fluent in five for today!
And here are the answers!

Good Morning Year 5 from Miss Brookes!
My post is a little bit late today, because my garage roof decided to collapse! The builder was supposed to take the rest of the roof down today...but I've just spent the past half an hour watching a man with a skip (as I was writing this post!) try and get it in the drive, only for a neighbour to refuse to move their car which is blocking our drive....I think it might be one of those days!
I saw this amazing photograph yesterday which I have to share with you. It's a rare, clear picture of the United Kingdom, from the International Space Station. Can you believe that this was taken from Space?
Anyway, onto today's GVP. I've been super impressed with all of the work you've been putting in this week. Don't forget to check back at 1pm for the answers, and keep an eye out for our celebration post later today.
Here are the answers:

Good Morning Reception!
Wow we can’t believe it’s the Friday before half term!!! Where has this half term of home learning gone!!!
Even though we have been at home doing our learning, it has gone really fast!!! I can't wait for the holiday (Mrs Iqbal) this time because I'll be celebrating Eid and my birthday on Monday! Anyway back to the Friday challenge...
This term we were looking at minibeasts and read these stories…
Today we would like you to show us which story has been your favourite story in a creative way. Here are some ideas to help you…
Draw or paint a picture from the story.
Make a model using recycled containers or boxes showing a character from the story.
Write a retell of your favourite story and make it into a book. Use the book template attached to the blog if you want to.
Make some masks, finger puppets, or stick puppets to retell the story. Make a video and send it to us. Minibeast mask templates are attached to the blog.
Pick one of the animals from the story you like and find some facts about it. Make an information book about that animal. A book template is attached to the blog.
Create a wordsearch with words from your favourite story. Decorate the wordsearch with pictures of animals from the story. The wordsearch template is attached to the blog.
Create a poster showing your favourite story. Don't add the title of the story but maybe just use pictures of the characters and some interesting words from the story. You could use some words that are repeated a lot like 'spinning her web.' from the The Very Busy Spider.
We can’t wait to see what you decide to do! Let’s see if we can guess which story/book has been your favourite…
Good Luck

Good morning,
Well done to everyone who identified yesterday's flag which was of course the flag of Wales with a dragon on it. Naomi, Heer, Ganesa, Maddison and Zarek all got it correct once again, I dread to think how many house points we now owe them when we get back to school, we may have to have some new ones made so that we have enough! (sorry Mrs Hughes!)
Today's quiz
What country is this the flag for? Can you tell us any languages that they speak in this country either now or in the past? Also there's a link to the country of the flag that Mrs Harriott posted yesterday, can you tell us what it is?
Good luck!

Good morning, I hope you all found some way to enjoy the sunshine yesterday. I sent a lot of time in my garden and I have to admit even though I applied plenty of sun cream, I’m still a little pink! I hope you were all more careful than me.
We’re almost at the end of the week and today is the last kindness based challenge as I have something a little different for tomorrow.
I hope that you have been experiencing some acts of kindness this week as today my challenge is to write a kindness acrostic poem. This is where you use each letter of the word you choose to start a sentence or word.
I’ve attached a file that has a few different kindness words to use for your poem so you can choose one or choose more than one you like! As always if you can’t print then don’t worry, you can write it out on a piece of paper or even type it on a computer like I have.
I have chosen the word caring. Here is my poem.
Cooking for other people
Asking people how they are
Returning peoples phone calls and messages
Interest in what friends and family are up to
Niceness goes a long way!
Going the extra mile for those you love
As always please e-mail your poems to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Thursday Sentence of the day and phonics
Date: 21st May 2020 @ 9:52am
Good Morning everyone!
Sentence of the day
Here are the answers to yesterday’s sentence. If you noticed that the full stops were missing then you were correct! Well done!
Football teams have substitutes.
Tigers wear joggers.
Elephants can walk backwards.
Cheetahs are the fastest animal.
Here is today’s sentence. Put on your detective hat and have a think, what could the problem be with this sentence?
Wensdai was a glorious dae, the sun was shinin and the burds were chirping in the torl towering trees.
Phonics
Today we are going to start our phonics by recapping our tricky words. Have a look at your tricky words and write them all out in your funky writing from yesterday. I’m going to write mine in rainbow writing…
could
For today’s phonics we are going back to our polysyllabic words. Polysyllabic words are words that have more than one syllable. When we are decoding new longer words we use syllables to help us chunk the words and make them more manageable to read.
Challenge one – Read the words below and clap out the syllables.
Challenge two – Read the words and draw a picture on a scrap of paper to match. Make sure each picture has its own piece of paper. Once you have drawn all of the pictures write out the words on separate pieces of paper. Now play a game of pairs and pair the word cards with the picture cards.
Challenge three- there are lots of games on phonicsplay to help you practice reading your polysyllabic words. Here is one of my favourites…

Good morning Year 5!
I hope you enjoyed the sunshine yesterday - a bit chillier today, but stil set to be fine I think! Livvi and Asaph planted their courgette plant out yesterday (which I'm pleased about, it was getting far too big to be in the house!), then I have 6 tomato plants that need planting outside, but haven't managed to buy any tomato bags to grow them in yet. I need a trip to a garden centre but haven't done it yet, it feels a bit strange to be going out in that way I think!
Anyway, back on to today - check this blog for today's learning, and remember to email us so we can celebrate it!

Hi from Miss Wendt!
Good morning everyone! Hope you are all well and managed to get some sunshine yesterday. It was so warm wasn't it? It was actually warmer in Manchester than it was in Portugal where my Mum lives! She couldn't believe how nice our weather was!
Here is today's fluent in five -

Good Morning Year 5! From Miss Brookes
I have to say, that even though I enjoy a bit of rain, I absolutely loved yesterday's weather. I was able to sit in the garden to get all of my work done (Mrs Hughes sets us home learning, a bit like how we set you home learning!)
Today's act of kindness will be to help my Mum when cooking tea tonight (I asked her "what shall my act of kindness be today?" and she said "helping me with dinner for once" so...maybe I need to do that more often!)
Here's todays GVP. Don't hesitate to email if you get a little bit stuck on a question, I sent some of you a showme video yesterday explaining one of the questions, and I'm always happy to do that.
Here are the answers! How did you get on?

Good Morning Reception!
Who would like to take part in a science experiment this morning?
Today we are going to be observing snails – a bit like the one from our story!
First, you need to make a snail home!
You can use any container with air holes as we are only going to be watching the snails for a couple of days, then you can release them back into your gardens!
After you have selected a container, use some soil/natural earth from outside to put in a layer at the base of the container/jar – fully covering the glass or plastic.
Add a layer of natural material at the top of the soil, like moss, compost etc. This traps moisture inside the soil, which creates good conditions for snails!
You could also decorate your snail’s home! Put objects in the container that snails can hide in or climb onto, which will make them more comfortable and more interesting to watch! You might find some of this material in your garden i.e small sticks or branches!
Finally, you need to find snails to put in your container! Look for snails in muddy garden area, old plant pots or other moist places (perfect with the wet weather today!)
Don’t forget – Garden snails are almost always safe to handle, but you must wash your hands before or after touching them!!
You can take care of your snails by, keeping the container moist with a spray bottle whenever the material at the base starts to dry out. You can also lightly spray the snails every day or two! Feed your snails clean food daily! They love fresh fruit and vegetables!
Below I have posted two links to support this activity:
The first link outlines another set of instructions on ‘How to Make a Snailery!’ if you would like to follow this experiment instead.
The second link is ‘My Snail Book!’ I thought it would be a lovely idea to document this process when observing your garden snails! Each page is filled with a fun activity linked to this investigation! See pictures below...
I hope you enjoy this investigation!! I can’t wait to see pictures of your snail friends! J

Good Morning Reception!
Who is ready for some maths learning today?
Let’s begin with Thursday’s fluent-in-five!
This week in our maths blogs, we have been learning about how our numbers can be represented when using ‘tens frames.’ We have also used tens frames to help us with our addition and subtraction skills!
Take a look at the pictures below to see pictures of the tens frames that were created following yesterday’s blog post! Well done to these reception superstars! J I love all of your creative ideas!
In our maths blog today, I have attached some activities linked to our tens frame learning this week! The first activities I have posted are number representation matching tasks 1-5 and 11-20! You first have to trace the number to form it correctly, and then match the correct tens frame representation to the numeral! See an example of one below!
The second task is an ‘Exploring Number Bonds to ten’ activity. Children have to first choose a number sentence and create a corresponding ten-frame using cubes, counters or any other small item! There are three attachments for this activity below, the tens frame template, number sentences and counter cut outs! You can either choose to print these, or make your own!
Have fun! J
HOME LEARNING - please send your photos in

Good Morning Reception!!
For the past two weeks we have been using the Julia Donaldson story ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ I want to read you the story, click my video at the bottom of the blog. Whilst you are listening to the story think about what your favourite part of the story has been.
Talk to your grown up or someone in your house about your favourite part of the story. Was it the beginning, middle or end? Remember to share your ideas in sentences.
Today I would like you to write and draw about your favourite part of the story. You can use this sheet attached to the blog or just do the work on a piece of paper.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Morning Reception!!
To start the phonics activity, I would like you to test yourself and see how many sounds and tricky words you know by playing the games below:
Flashcards Speed Trials – click on pick individual graphemes and choose all sounds in Phase 2 and the ones we have learnt in Phase 3 up to ‘or.’
https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/flashcards-speed-trials
Tricky word trucks – click on pick individual words and choose all Phase 2 and 3. Why not have a go at Phase 4 tricky words…
https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/tricky-word-trucks
Today we are going to practise the sound from yesterday ‘or.’ Sing along with the song at the bottom of the blog all about ‘or.’
Can you read these ‘or’ alien words? Get your grown up to time you…
Today’s practise and apply activities are:
Activity 1 – Target game. Print and cut out the words attached to this blog or write them on scraps of paper. Spread the words out in a space inside or outside of your house. Choose a ‘beanbag.’ It could be a pebble, soft toy, or anything small that you will be able to throw safely. Throw your ‘beanbag’ on a word and read it.
Activity 2 – Play 'or' roll and read.
Activity 3 – Make a ‘or’ work poster. Use the words you have learnt and put them into a colourful poster.
Activity 4 – Use four of the ‘or’ words from any of the activities above and write some super sentences.
Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to… receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Morning!
I hope today is going to be sunny like yesterday. I saw lots of children playing in their gardens, in their paddling pools on the way home from school. It was lovely to see that families were spending time together and staying safe.
Today we are going to compare the mass of objects and use words like lighter, lightest, lighter than, heavier, heaviest and heavier than to compare how something weighs in relation to another object.
Watch this link from BBC Bitesize to help you understand the learning for today and then complete the activities
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z428wty
At school we often use balance scales to compare the weight of objects and before school closed we got really good at drawing balance scales.to record our thinking and to identify which objects are heavier and which are lighter.
Challenge 1
Complete the heavier or lighter powerpoint on the bottom of the page
Challenge 2
Complete the heavier and lighter challenge at the bottom of the page. Use your yellow book to record your thinking.
Challenge 3
Complete the heavier and lighter cut and stick
Do not worry if you are unable to print the work out. Copy the balance scales and draw the pictures.
Challenge 4
Complete which is the heaviest activity
Thanks

Hello,
Happy Wednesday! It is going to be a lovely sunny day so we need to get the learning completed really quickly so that you can play in the garden with your family and bathe in your paddling pools.
Today we are goung to focus on problem solving with length and height. So hopefully you can use the skills that you have been taught from the previous weeks to help you with this new learning.
The first thing we need to think about is how we use a ruler to measure the height and length of an object.
Remember
The length of an object is how long it is.
The height of an object is how tall it is.
Have a look at this video that shows you how to use a ruler to measure the length of an object.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuBLuIW1U70
Remember you have to put the object at the start of the ruler-marked 0
Challenge 1
Complete the measuring length and height sheets at the bottom of the page. If you cannot print out the sheets, don't worry. You can make your own ruler and copy the questions into the yellow exercise books.
Challenge 2
Use the height chart to record the heights in cm's of your family. Who is the tallest? Who is the shortest?
Challenge 3
Ask an adult if you can use a tape measure. Have a go at measuring the length and the height of the biggest thing you can see. Draw it in your exercise books and write how long and tall it is.
Now have a look at how to use this knowledge to solve problems
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zjpqqp3/year-1-and-p2-lessons/1
Challenge 4
Find 2 objects in your house. Draw them in your book. Record how long they are. How much longer is the longest object compared to the shortest object?
Challenge 5
Find 2 objects in your house. Draw them in your book. Record how tall they are. How much taller is the tallest object compared to the shortest object?
Thanks

Good morning,
Wow what a day! The weather forecast suggests it could get as hot as 26 degrees today! I can’t wait to get out there and enjoy it although I’ll definitely be putting on some sun cream!
Today’s activity is linked to kindness again and involves making a little present for either someone else or yourself. Today‘s challenge is to make an origami heart.
To start with you will need a square piece of paper and it will be easier to follow the instructions if it is decorated or coloured on one side.
Here is a YouTube video telling you how to make a square from an A4 piece of paper.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLrKrHgAI40
Then you have a choice of making 2 different hearts, one flat and one 3D. I made both and prefer the flat one and found it a bit easier but it’s up to you which you do.
Here is how to make the flat heart (my first picture) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnV262Egucw
Here is how to make the 3D inflatable heart (my second picture) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN4oPm9bCWE (then at the end you have to blow it up using the little hole at the bottom)
I can’t wait to see your hearts! Remember to e-mail them to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 11
Date: 20th May 2020 @ 9:42am
Are you ready for today's spooky adventure? We seem to be stuck between the right and the left door! We first entered the right door to find a bed and a table with Werewolf's blood but Maddison didn't want to choose the option to lie down or drink the blood!
Then Maddison chose to go to the room on the left but in this room we only had the option to drink from the tap or leave and go back to the room on the right.
Heer was the first to message and she did not want to drink the water so today we are heading back to the room on the right.
Once in this room you will have to choose whether to investigate the dressing table or lie down...
As you open the door on your right, you realise you are entering the master bedroom. A grand four-poster bed sits in the centre of the room. Surprisingly, the dust in this room is not as bad as everywhere else and it appears remarkably clean. A faint smell of lavender drifts from the bed and you feel relaxed and sleepy.
In one corner of the room, there is a dressing table full of bottles and books. The smell is getting stronger and you feel even more tired, the bed looks so comfortable, maybe a small rest wouldn’t do any harm.
Do you:
Lay down for a rest
Investigate the dressing table
Who will be the first to decide?
