It has been a busy week here at Ravensbury in the run up to the holidays.

We have been looking at some of the exciting things some people like to do around Christmas time in the UK. We have decorated the school with Christmas trees and tinsel, sung some Christmas songs and we will be eating a special party meal next week. Something we do everyday in December , is take it in turns to open a door on our advent calendar. Look what one of our year 5 children got as a treat from it today!

This week, we have been using using language which tells us where something or somebody is. We have found lots of opportunities to use this language around school: In our line when we are moving around the school to see who is in front or at behind, which month is after November or which day comes before Wednesday. We can use positional language in so many different situations!
Why does the world need great inventions?

In Year 5, we have been using our CC language and learning to write our own sentences. We have captured ideas from the pictures in the non-fiction book and added them to our sentence starter to create our very own sentences about great inventions. Which one is your favourite?
How did the Great Fire of London spread?

In Year 2 this week, we have been building on our work from last week, by learning the language we need to talk about how the Great Fire of London spread and why.
We have ordered the events and told our friend how it could have happened.
Today, we wrote down the events in order .

As part of our EAL learning this week, Reception have been uisng full sentences to tell us what they can do. Now we are ready to have a go at writing the sentences !

We have had a fantastic day celebrating us across the school today ! We have worn clothes that represent us and taken time to reflect on what we identify with and what makes us special and unique. Take a look at some of our pictures.

This week , we have been working hard on using sentences in our writing. We looked at sentences and found we needed a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end. We used our reading to help us decide when to use the full stop in our own writing.

In Reception, we have practised our new language by going fishing! We had to listen to the word, find the picture , fish for it and then say the word!

It has been a fabulous first week back at school, and so good to see everyone again after the summer holiday and catch up with your news.
This week and next, we are assessing our EAL children's language levels, in readiness for EAL sessions to start the following week for our international new arrivals. We are so excited to get started!

Looking at the structure of our sentences

This week, we have been looking at how we can structure our sentences so they make sense.
KS1 have been using colour coded sentences to help us put prepositions in the right place in our sentences, and KS2 have been using different past tenses in a sentence to order events.
Using tenses to order events in the past

Our KS2 group is looking at using different tenses at the moment. This week, we are using tenses to order two events in the past.
Tenses can be tricky, so we are playing lots of games to help us remember how each one is formed.

This week, we have been looking at how we can write events in order. We have read a book which showed us what we need to do to plant a sunflower seed and help it grow into a sunflower. So, we had a go ourselves and now we are going to write our own book using the same language structures!

In our KS2 group ,we have been finding out the meaning of contractions such as I'm , doesn't and don't. We played a game to help us, and we found out that two words have been shortened and made into one word. We have found that many of our reading books use contractions too.

In our KS1 group this week, we have been looking at the words that help us order events: first, next, then, after that and finally. We have used them to order the life cycle of a sunflower, and now we know the words, we can order anything we want to!

KS2 have been investgating how to form English plurals . We have used plurals to generalise and have written our own sentences to practise the skill. We visited Nursery's ducklings to get some inspiration for our work !

Our KS2 group has been using the language of time to compare one time with another. We've used it in our CC to compare two different periods of time and we can use it in sentences to answer questions about time.

Over the past two weeks, our KS2 group has been learning the language of shape. We have enjoyed using the new words to give each other clues, and then guessing the name of the 2d or 3d shape.
