Health and wellbeing challenges from Mrs Glover

Date: 27th Mar 2020 @ 2:59pm

Hello, Mrs Glover here!

I hope everyone is staying safe, having fun and working hard on your learning. I'm going to post a Health and Wellbeing Challenge every day for people to do if they choose to. I'll be doing them all too and posting pictures where I can. Please feel free to e-mail any pictures or comments to your home learning e-mail addresses!

Challenge number 1: Go on a mindfulness walk. Write or draw 5 things that you can see, hear, feel, smell or touch (make sure you have an adult with you if necessary and stay far way from people you may see when you're out, although you can still say a friendly hello!) You could even do this in your garden if you have one!

Here's a picture of my mindfulness walk that I went on at lunch time today!

I saw trees and water, I heard birds and rustling, I could smell different plants and I could feel the sun on my face :-)

Session 5- Partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and 1's

In school we teach children to use concrete objects, numbers lines, and fingers to help them add and subtract. Alongside this we also teach them to look at numbers or quantities and work out the different ways that they can be split into 2 groups. We do this so that children can quickly worki out maths problems that involve  numbers by splitting them into smaller units so they're easier to work with. Younger children quickly learn these facts and use them to quickly solve problem.

We use equipment such as numicon pieces, base tens frames and diennes to help children to understand how to split the numbers. into tens and 1's.Take a look at this video it shows you how to partition numbers using diennes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJOK5uwJ_Xw

We can do the same with numicon pieces.

Using Numicon to learn about tens and units, this is combined with ...

Have a go at working through the activities and then if you feel  confident at partitioning and fancy a challenge then play this game.

maths session 4

Focus: Subtraction with concrete objects, using a number line and subtraction problems

What does subtraction mean? Watch this video to help you remember.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z2xpvcw

The children haave been subtracting amounts using objects in class and know that when they take away/subtract they physically remove objects that can be moved and the amount will get smaller. Sometimes they forget what to do when the objects they are subtracting cannot be moved and sometimes become confused.

In school we teach them to either cross out the amount that is being subtracted or cover the amount with their hand. The amount that is not covered ot crossed out is the amount that is left.

            Subtraction using concrete objects

Friday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 11:20am

Good Morning Everyone!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExaaIsrGm6U

It's Friday! I hope you've had a lovely week of home learning!

Sentence of the day

Here is the last sentence of the day for this week! Can you spot all of the mistakes and write the new sentence down?

sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on our vowel families - a,e,i,o,u

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEbaEXf6BqM

Today we are just focusing on the ay and the ea family...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-uLFJp5ZtI - ay family

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqgkdWrSPTc - ee family

There are lots of ways to make the same sound. In the childrens home learning packs there are worksheets to support you with these sounds. You could also play games of I spy and ask the children to try the alternative spellings and find out which spelling is the correct one for the object. There are also some word card in your packs, encourage the children to read these words - this doesn't have to be a sit down activity though, get moving! The children could play hide and seek the words, relay races whilst reading the words or musical bumps - read a word when the music stops.

English writing

In school the children have been reading the book Naughty Bus. They have started to make their own buses and have thought of different Naughty things that the Bus might do! Here is a link to the story so that you can listen again!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJlLXoaglow&t=136s

For their writing activity we would like the children to write the story of the Naughty Bus. They can create their own little book and even make a Naughty Bus to go with it. It is important that the children are encouraged to use their phonics, capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and adjectives to make their writing interesting. We look forward to sharing the stories when we return back to school!

We hope you've had a good week of home learning. Now it's time to celebrate all that you have done!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend laugh

sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on tricky words and today we are looking at phase three tricky words. Some children know how to spell these words and are quite confident, however, they forget to use the correct spelling when writing sentences.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R087lYrRpgY

Here is a song to help the children to remember the tricky words - Be warned it will be stuck in your heads all day smiley

Use this video and the activity book in your folders as a starting point to help the children remember how to spell the tricky words. Try and get creative with the children with remembering the tricky words, making pictures and posters and using playdough, pasta and chalks to spell out the words are some fun and rememberable ways to help the children to remember the spellings.

Reading

Todays reading focuses on those tricky words! Here is another video just in case the children need another reminder of those words...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri4u0TjAZ38

In your packs there is a tricky word spotter story. The children need to read the story and find all of the tricky words. Alternativley you could read another story and see how many of the tricky words you can find in that.

Dont forget to take some pictures of all the fun activities you're doing and send them to y1homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk we'd love to see your smiling faces ! Also if you have any questions please email us !

See you again tomorrow for some more home learning!

Wednesday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 10:29am

Good Morning!

I hope you are all enjoying your home learning so far!

Here's a little something to wake you all up this morning...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9q4U2P3ig

Sentence of the day

I hope you have been enjoying your sentences of the day - I am sorry about my croaky voice!

Sentence of the day

Phonics

Todays phonics focus is split digraphs. You will be looking at the a-e and the e-e split digrpahs today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkycxr-joDk - a-e

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFuETDoqVnA e-e

Use these videos as a starting point and play some games with the children. You may want to collect some items in your house and ask the children to sort them into things that have an a-e split digraph and things that have an e-e split digraph. If I spy was a hit the other day you might want to play that again. There are a-e and e-e words in your home learning packs for the children to practice reading. You may want to cut these up and place them around the house and ask the children to go on a treasure hunt for them all.

English writing - with a phonics link

The focus for todays writing is linked to the trigraph phonics that you did on Monday. The children can re watch the Geraldine the Giraffe videos to remind them of the different sounds. In your packs you have some pictures and word cards with words containing the four trigraphs on them - air, ear, ure, igh. The children can use the cards to make their own silly stories, poems or sentences.

Wishing you all a lovely Wednesday :)

Tuesday Sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:55am

Good morning Year One!

Let's wake up and shake up our brains this morning...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gUbdNbu6ak

Sentence of the day

Every day we will be posting a sentence of the day. The children will need to read the sentence themselves and find the corrections. They can write their corrected sentence into their special notebooks that are in the home learning packs. The following day we will post the corrected sentence so don't forget to check back in so that you can get the answers. The sentences will link with the phonics learning for that day.

sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on the common exception words that children need to learn in year one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bc83J6AFfI

In your home learning packs you have a common exception words workbook. Use this book as a start point that the children can work through in the next few weeks to remember their common exception words. Most of the children love games like bingo to remember these words !

Reading Comprehension

The children have a reading comprehension in their home learning pack. Support them to work through this using their phonics to read any unfamiliar words.

Don't forget to carry on reading books for pleasure at this time too!

Monday sentence of the day and phonics

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:41am

Good morning Year One!

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are up and ready to learn! Don't forget that Joe Wicks is doing a P.E lesson to wake up our brains and bodies every morning at 9am.

https://www.thebodycoach.com/blog/pe-with-joe-1254.html

Sentence of the day

Every day we will be posting a sentence of the day. The children will need to read the sentence themselves and find the corrections. They can write their corrected sentence into their special notebooks that are in the home learning packs. The following day we will post the corrected sentence so don't forget to check back in so that you can get the answers. The sentences will link with the phonics learning for that day.

Sentence of the day

Phonics

Today's phonics focuses on trigraphs (three letters that make one sound). The trigraphs are air, ear, ure and igh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcHIX2xK--A - air

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCR2RZ4ZYY - igh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwCzf71flBA - ure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EneZ1UubxSA - ear

Use these videos as a starting point to help the children remember the sounds. Once the children have watched the video encourage them to play a game of I spy just like Geraldine. The children can find items with the different sounds in. The children can then write labels for the items using their phonics knowledge to spell the words correctly. Once you have finished these activities there are some worksheets to match the learning in week one phonics in the home learning packs.

SPAG

The focus of todays SPAG is adding the suffix -ed to a word to make it past tense. There is a worksheet in the home learning packs to support this and children can change the words from present to past tense by adding ed. The children can then write their own silly sentences using these words.

Hope you enjoy your home learning!

A message from your teachers

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 9:01am

To my AMAZING year one class,

I have loved being your teacher this year and I have loved getting to know each and every one of you. I have loved teaching you new things and making new special memories with you. Some of my favourites have to be our pancake day party and our trip to Manchester airport! You are such a lovely class and you all care about one another and have such wonderful friendships and this makes me so proud of you all.

It's a really confusing time right now and I know that you are upset that you won't be able to come to school every day and that makes me feel sad too. But I want you to remember that we have to do this to make sure we are keeping ourselves and our friends and families safe and to stop them from becomming poorly. Whilst you are not in school I want you to look after yourself and your family and remember to keep washing your hands!

I know that you all love learning new things so over the next few weeks we have put together lots of learning that you can do at home. We will also be posting learning every day on this blog so don't forget to check in! Try your hardest and don't forget to send me any pictures of you completing your learning as you know I love to see your smiling faces doing new things!

I already can't wait until we come back to school and I can hear all about your time at home and all of the different things you have done. But for the time being keep smiling, keep making your brains strong and keep washing your hands!

Love from Miss Riley x smiley

An Eggsellent Friday!

Date: 23rd Mar 2020 @ 8:43am

On Friday Year 1 had an Easter Eggstravanganza!

The children made a yummy rice krispie cake each.

They waited all afternoon to eat it!

Which made them taste even better when they did!

Then the children found out that the Easter Bunny had been into school! They searched high and low for Easter eggs!

Until at last everybody found one!

What an eggsellent day!

maths session 1                   Focus: Number Formation

The focus of the session today is Number formation. Some of the children find it tricky, often reversing and writing numbers from the bottom. Please use the number formation sheets today to practice writing the numbers using the starting point dots to remember to write tne numbers from the top.To help the children to remember how to write the numbers correctly it might be useful to listen to the songs on the following links . I have tried to give children a variety of songs. Find the song that works for your child !

Amazing Aeroplanes at Manchester Airport!

Date: 11th Mar 2020 @ 8:08pm

On Monday Year one went on a trip to Manchester Airport Runway Visitors Park. The children had a fantastic day and enjoyed every minute!

They loved travelling to the visitors park by double decker coach and spent most of the journey there and back looking out of the windows and telling one another about all of the places they know in Manchester as well as pointing out all of the different types of transport they could see.

As soon as we arrived at the Visitor park we were lucky enough to spot (and hear) a huge plane taking off from the runway infront of us! The children were amazed and enjoyed spending time watching the huge planes take off and land.

We enjoyed our lunches in the warm classrooms before heading to a special tour of the visitors park! The childrne loved dressing up as different workers from the airport and had a great time being a pilot in the front of the plane and pressing all of the buttons - we defintily have some pilots in the making!

Transport Topic Launch!

Date: 6th Mar 2020 @ 11:32am

On Wednesday we launched our new Connected Curriculum Topic - Transport!

This term the children will be learning all about different types of transport, the history of transport and how different transport moves.

To launch our topic, the children brought their own favourite transport in and discussed which transport was year 1s favourite - It was a close call between scooters and bikes!

We also invited the grown ups in to make paper aeroplanes and we had a paper aeroplane competition! Our class were the winners with Scotts amazing aeroplane flying the farthest! Well done Scott!

Pancake maths!

Date: 29th Feb 2020 @ 9:03am

This week the children have been celebrating all things pancake!

The children have been weighing the different ingredients needed for making pancakes. They have used non standard measures to find the heaviest and lightest ingredients and have had great fun flipping pancakes and joining in in our pancake day competitions!

Mega maths!

Date: 13th Feb 2020 @ 9:41pm

This week the children have been practicing counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

They have listened to lots of songs on YouTube and have created their own songs and dances too. Some children got a little messy with paint and made their own counting in 5s posters. Other children made their own counting in 10s hopscotch games.

The children had lots of fun and would love to show off their counting skills at home.

Clayton Hall museum

Date: 11th Feb 2020 @ 8:22pm

The children really enjoyed visiting Clayton Hall last week! They all got the opportunity to wear victorian clothes and spend time experiencing what it would be like to be a child in the victorian times.

The children were very busy in the house.

They made tasy pies in the larder and made some delicous soup in the kitchen. The children made sure that the butter was the right shape and the vegetables were all chopped.

The children then made sure that all of the clothes in the wash house were washed and ironed. They had to use all of their stregnth to squeeze all of the water out of the clothes using the old victorian mangle.

After the children had worked hard to make sure that the house was clean and the food was cooked, they had time to relax and play with the old toys and games in the living room and bedroom.

Finally we all sat down to a big meal of chicken and sprouts in the dining room whilst listening to William and Graces beautiful piano melodies.

The children loved their afternoon at Clayton Hall and are eager to return!

Lost in the toy museum

Date: 2nd Feb 2020 @ 6:29pm

This week we have been reading the story 'lost in the toy museum'. The director of toys has sent us a letter to ask for our help, all of his toys are lost and he needs to keep a register to make sure all of the toys are up and ready for the museum visitors in the morning.

This week we have been adding the toys together as well as subtracting the toys to see how many are left. We have been using tens frames, bead strings and part whole models to help us become faster and more confident when adding and subtracting.

Lucy’s magic toy box

Date: 22nd Jan 2020 @ 7:09pm

Lucy's toys have been escaping from her toy box! Every morning she had to add all of the toys altogether to make sure that they are all back and safe. Today we have been helping Lucy to learn new and fast ways to add her toys together. We have used tens frames to help us bridge through ten.

Super sketching

Date: 21st Jan 2020 @ 9:58pm

Today year 1 spent the day learning how to draw and shade with Mrs McAffer.

The children learnt to use their hands to help them make sure that their pictures weren't to big or small. They also learnt how to shade light, medium and dark as well as how to make their teddy bear pictures look soft and furry.

Mrs McAffer was so impressed with the children's observation skills and can't wait to see them again next week !

Terrific toys

Date: 17th Jan 2020 @ 1:27pm

This week we have been comparing old and new toys. We have looked at and have played with old and new toys and have been thinking about what is the same and what is different?

Can you think of any ways old and new toys are the same and different?

Old and new toys

Date: 17th Jan 2020 @ 1:20pm

This term we are learning all about old and new toys.

On Friday we all brought our favourite toys into school. We had lots of fun sharing our toys with each other and playing different games. We loved playing board games like snakes and ladders and learnt how to play guess who. William in Miss Rileys class was a great bingo caller and we played a whole class game of bingo!

In the afternoon we were very lucky and had a special visitor who showed us some old toys and taught us how to play with them. We loved learning about the old toys, especially 'jacks' and 'shut the box'.

Stick lady comes to visit year one

Date: 4th Dec 2019 @ 1:40pm

Yesterday we received a letter from stick lady love, we weren't expecting it and it was a big shock !

Stick lady love is very miserable, she has lost her stick man and does not know where he is. He went into the forest and still hasn't returned. Without him she is so upset and blue and her children are missing their dad.

Today we asked stick lady love lots of questions so that we could find out a bit more about stick man and help her find him. Stick lady helped us to make character profiles so that we can help to find him and so that the family can be happy again !

Perfect partitioning !

Date: 4th Dec 2019 @ 1:27pm

Stick lady has lost her husband ! We have founds lots of sticks but none of them are her stick husband... This week we have been counting to the number 20 to find out how many sticks we have. We have been partitioning the numbers into tens and ones. We know that tens are in the left and ones are on the right.
