Tuesday - Repeating Patterns

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 8:32am

Good Morning Reception!

Who is ready for some more maths learning today?

First of all, let’s warm up with our count from 1-100 work out song!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc

Super! Do you feel warmed up?

Today in our maths learning, we are going to focus on ‘PATTERNS!’

Does anybody remember what a pattern is?

A pattern is when we repeat something again and again.. this can be demonstrated through our movement, with shapes, numbers EVEN food, anything you can think of!!

Take a look at some examples of patterns in the videos below!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBjjxSx45-Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoFhVdYsmPg&t=34s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ9q4U2P3ig (My personal favourite!)

Here are some ideas below for how to represent a pattern…

How many can you complete??

If you want to challenge yourself to do EVEN MORE pattern learning - see the links attached below!

Don't forget to email your work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk! :)

Tuesday 21st April Writing

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 7:45am

Good Morning Reception!

Hopefully, you have had a chance to listen to our new text ‘Mad about Minibeasts.’ If you have not check it out using the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rDQN8I7RkY

Today I want you to start by playing the ‘What am I?’ game using the PowerPoint attached to this blog. Ask your grown up to help. How many minibeasts did you guess correctly…?

Next, I want you to look at the first page from the book where you can see all the minibeasts in the garden. I have attached it to this blog. Can you label the minibeasts you find in this picture? Remember to use your segmenting, blending and correct letter formation to write the name of each minibeast as you find it.

You may want to pick your favourite minibeast and write a super sentence about it.

Don’t forget to send us an email with your pictures and writing!!

Tuesday 21st April Phonics

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 7:38am

Good Morning Reception!!

Today I want you to start by looking at the Phase 3 tricky words from your Phonic learning pack. Can you read them in different voices? Can you play fastest finger first? Ask your grown up to say a tricky word and see who finds it the quickest…

Why don’t you sing along with the tricky word song below?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R087lYrRpgY

I want you to continue looking at the Phase 3 sounds from yesterday and also use the Phase 2 sounds confidently in your reading and writing.

You are going to play a game called ‘Treasure Hunt.’ Use post it notes or any scraps of paper to write the following words…

Jill

Jack

jacket

wag

cobweb

box

yap

Zigzag

jet

vet

visit

web

six

yes

buzz

zip

After that, hide the words in your garden or room inside your house. You must take turns to find a word and read it. Every time you read the word correctly you will be given a reward. Grown ups the reward could be something to represent jewels such as pasta pieces, Lego, special pebbles or shells. Anything that is small and looks something like a reward/gem.

Extra Challenge – Can you use your word that you find and write it? Mrs Cooper and Mrs Iqbal's phonic groups you may want to write some sentence. You can do your writing on a piece of paper or if you are doing the treasure hunt outside write it using some chalk on the ground. Please ask your grown up if this is want you want to do.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Monday Minibeast Hunt

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 8:51am

This half term, we are going to be learning about MINIBEASTS!

What better way to explore this topic than to go on a MINIBEAST hunt!

With your adult at home, can you go into your garden or outside for a walk and look for some creepy crawlies?

Attached below is a checklist of the different minibeasts you have to find!

Have lots of fun and don’t forget to take pictures of your wriggly friends! :)

Monday Maths - 3d Shapes

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 8:28am

Good Morning Reception!

I hope you have had a lovely Easter break and have been enjoying the sunny weather! I’d love to hear about what you have all been up to!

Today in our maths learning we are going to focus on 3D shapes.

Remind yourself of some of our common 3D shapes by listening to the 3D shapes songs we listen to in class!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guNdJ5MtX1A

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPZegz690Mg

Now you have listened to the songs, I would like you to look around your home or outside and try to find…

A cylinder

A sphere

A cube

A cuboid

And A Cone!

Once you have found them,

Can you count how many FACES each shape has?

Can you tell someone at home how many EDGES  your shape has?

Maybe you can even count the VERTICES?

Take a picture of your shapes and send them in to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk!

I’m looking forward to seeing them!!

Below I have attached some links for you to download and complete these shape challenges at home!

Monday 20th April Reading

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 3:50pm

Good Morning Reception,

Today we are starting a new topic and text. Hopefully through our blogs today you will be able to guess what our new topic will be about for our Home Learning this half term.

I want you to start by playing a game of I Spy using the picture that I have attached to this blog. Say the words...'I Spy with my little eyes I can see a......'

Then play again by adding a describing word before the object or creature that you can see.

For example, 'I Spy with my little eye I can see a black creepy spider.'

Hopefully you have guessed that our new topic this half term is all about...

Our new text is called 'Mad About Minibeasts.' It is an information book with lovely pictures about lots of different creatures that can be found in the garden. Listen to the story online using the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rDQN8I7RkY

After you have listened to the story talk to your grown up about the different creatures you have learnt about in the book. You may want to draw a picture and write the name of the minibeast underneath your picture.

Mrs Cooper and Mrs Iqbal's phonic groups I wonder if you can write a super sentence about your minibeast...!!!

Send in any work or photos to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Luck!!!

Monday 20th April Phonics

Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 3:35pm

Good Morning Reception,

Hope you are well and have enjoyed the Easter Holidays. Here is your Phonics home learning for today...

Start by singing some of our phonic songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saF3-f0XWAY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zKr44iBFT0

Today we are going to concentrate on the Phase 3 sounds below:

Can you say each sound correctly? Play fastest finger first by asking your adult to say a sound and you point to the sound quickly.

In your Phonic pack you need to cut up the Phase 3 sounds and take out the sounds above. Now I want you to turn over the sound cards and take turns with someone in your family to flip over a sound and tell them something that brings with that sound. Now look around your house and see if you can find anything that begins with the Phase 3 sounds above.

Using the cut up sounds from Phase 2 and the Phase 3 ones above can you make the following words. Ask your grown up to say each word and you make it up using the sound cards.

Words to make...

jam

jazz

jog

fox

win

will

yell

yak

If you are in Mrs Cooper or Mrs Iqbal's phonic groups have a go at putting each word in a super sentence. You may even want to put the words in a wordsearch and give it to someone in your house to find the words. I have attached a blank wordsearch template for you if you want to do this activity.

Finally have a go at playing one of these games:

https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/pick-a-picture

Practise reading sentences from Phase 3 j, v, x, y, z:

https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/sentences-3

Don't forget to email your photos or work to... receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Luck!!!

Wellbeing holiday challenge

Date: 6th Apr 2020 @ 11:36am

Hi everyone,

Happy Easter holidays!

If you're still looking to stay busy over the holidays then I know the teachers are setting some fun activities but you could also give this exciting project a go!

Liverpool Museum are asking children between the age of 4 and 11 to create their own exhibition or gallery all about you and your favourite things. The project involves creating a project, designing a poster and then creating a video and some of them will even win the chance to have their exhibition feature on their website as well as spending an afternoon at the museum and getting a behind the scenes tour.

There is more information here : https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/my-home-my-museum and in these pictures below. Please send us pictures or links to your home e-mail addresses if you do this!

If you missed any of the wellbeing challenges from last week then why not give them a go too?

Happy Easter!

Easter Baking Ideas!

Date: 4th Apr 2020 @ 9:04am

Good morning Ravensbury!

I'm just getting my shopping list ready and was looking up some Easter baking receipes I thought my children would enjoy over these next couple of weeks. There are some lovely ideas on the BBC Good Food website, and thought you might like to have a go at some Easter baking too!

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easter-kids

Really, I'm hoping to make Hot Cross Buns for the first time - but that all depends on whether I can buy some bread flour, and the flour aisle in the shops has been pretty empty! Perhaps I'll find some today!

Wishing you all a lovely Easter (and happy baking!),

Mrs Hodges x

Easter Holiday Activities

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 12:50pm

Good Afternoon Reception,

We are now finishing for the Easter Holidays. It has been a very strange half term where we started in school but have ended the half term in an unusual situation of home learning. This I can only imagine has been different for all of us, but we must think about why we are doing it.

Over the holiday period we won't be posting daily activities on our class blog pages but in your packs you do have a Holiday Activity that looks like this:

I know some of you have already completed this. So a little later we will be blogging some other activities that you may want to do over the holidays.

Keep sending in your photos/videos of things that do over the holidays. We will continue to check emails at times over the holiday period.

Wellbeing challenge number 6

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Happy Friday everyone and well done for learning at home for 2 whole weeks! As strange as I've found it not being at school, the time has flown by for me so I hope it feels the same for you.

I'm going to do one final wellbeing challenge for today and then take a break for the next 2 weeks for the Easter holiday. However, check back on Monday morning as over the weekend I am going to set you a little wellbeing project in case anyone wants an Easter challenge.

Since it's the end of the week, today's challenge is to relax and get ready for the weekend so I want everyone to do a guided meditation. This is when you close your eyes and listen to a lovely soothing voice transport you to somewhere new. They are great for helping you to sleep or if you just want to relax at the end of your learning.

There are plenty available on Youtube, here are a few of my favourites:

Secret treehouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWOHcGF1Tmc

Spaceship to the moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV9BBR1RoGg

Hot air balloon ride - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv6Y1tq1sQ

Have a great Easter holiday and don't forget to check back for the challenge next week if you think you'd like to do it. I'll be back with a daily challenge from Monday the 20th of April if we're still at home then.

Past challenges

Thank you to Mrs Ganner for sending me a photo of her daughter completing the baking challenge from earlier in the week, it looks amazing and has made me want to bake something chocolately myself this weekend! I think I might make some brownies as a treat for my husband!

Friday Challenges!

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 7:35pm

Good Morning Reception,

I can't believe it's Friday in our second week of home learning. Has it already been two weeks since we left school...?surprise

If it's Friday then that only means it's Challenge Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today we would like you to choose some activities of your choice from the Activity sheet which is attached to this blog. You may choose 1, 2, 3 or more. We would like you to complete your activity inside or outside your house using the resources around you. What will you choose?

My son Adam was my helper today and he decided to choose three of the activities on the list. He chose:

Activity 1 - He wrote numbers on some pieces of card and made a number line on our washing line in the garden. We played some games with the washing line numbers:

Missing number - He closed his eyes and I took a number away. He had to guess which number was missing. It got trickier when I took away 3 or four numbers.

Squirt the number - Use a water gun or nerf style gun to hit the target number.

Activity 8 - Adam used the toys in his bedroom to make the letters of his name. What can you use in your house to do this activity?

Activity 10 - Adam found some crayons and practised writing his tricky words, numbers and letters outside in our back garden on the paving stones.

We can't wait to see which ones you will do!!!!

Don't forget to send in your videos/photos to our email receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Luck Love Mrs Iqbal and Miss Williams smiley

More Amazing Reception Home Learning

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 3:44pm

Tomasz has really enjoyed the story 'The Odd Egg' and decided to create a model from the story. It looks amazing!!

Ferdows has been making a model of the lifecycle of a chicken and mastering the art of origami. This is when you fold pieces of paper to create things like animals.

Well Done!!! smiley

Wellbeing challenge number 5

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 11:32am

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all still working hard and staying safe. Thanks to both children and staff who've been e-mailing me pictures of their wellbeing challenges, it's really cheering me up! I've included some at the bottom of my post again.

Today's wellbeing challenge is all about yoga. Yoga is a great way to relax and escape for a while and it's good for both your bodies and minds. I like to put on some relaxing music while I do it and am lucky enough to have a lovely bright pink yoga mat too as otherwise I'd be on a hard wooden floor. A carpet, rug or blanket would work just as well though.

There's a great channel on Youtube called Cosmic Kids that does lots of different fun yoga sessions: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga (I know that Miss Bryce's class have done some of these sessions and we did some school last week too so some of you are already great at it!)

Any adults reading, or maybe older children who fancy something a bit more difficult could have a go at this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTANio_2E0Q

Here I am below doing the bound ankle pose :-)

Remember to let us know how you get on!

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

Thanks Ferdows in reception who has e-mailed in a picture of his origami rabbit from yesterdays challenge, I love it!

Another thank you to Mrs Iqbal and her son Adam who did the baking challenge from Tuesday and made this delicious looking chocolate cake!

Thursday Shape Hunt

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 8:13am

Good Morning Reception!

Today I would like you to take part in a…..

As you know, I LOVE to take part in these scavenger hunts too!

Take a look at what I found in the video below!

Do you think you can find more shapes than me?

Can you take your own shape pictures or make a video?

Have a go and send them to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, I'm looking forward to seeing them!! :)

Phonic Scavenger Hunt

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 3:48pm

Good Morning Reception,

Today for phonics I want you to go on a scavenger hunt looking for objects in your house that may begin or have the Phase 2 sounds in the word. A scavenger hunt is when you are looking around all parts of your house indoors or outdoors for objects. You may want to look in cupboards, drawers but make sure you speak to an adult when you are looking for your objects.

Adam and I went on a scavenger hunt in our house and found lots of things that begin with or have the sounds in Phase 2. Look in your Phonic pack for the Phase 2 sound mat or look at the sheet that I have attached to this blog. Before we went on the hunt we wrote out the sounds on pieces of paper so we knew what objects we were looking for.

Make sure to send in your photos to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Good Luck

Mrs Iqbal laugh

Wellbeing challenge number 4

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 10:53am

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I don't know about you but 2 of my favourite things in the world that always make me feel good are animals and travelling. While I can't travel now, I thankfully have my 2 rabbits, Rupert and Angel, to keep me company at home. Here is a picture of them underneath!

So since I can't travel right now, or see any other animals, I am doing these things in a different way: by looking at this website all about wild animals around the world https://gowild.wwf.org.uk/

It has information and activities about lots of different animals from lots of different regions (Year 2, it has a section on Polar animals which would link nicely to your topic right now!) so you can virtually travel round the world. It even has drawing and photography competitions that you can enter and have your work appear on the website!

I particularly like this activity to make Amazon animal hand shadows https://gowild.wwf.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-hand-shadows.pdf (although I didn't have much luck trying to take a good photo of mine. Perhaps you can do better than me and send one to your home learning address?)

So your wellbeing challenge for today is to choose your favourite area or animal from the website or even complete one of the activities and send a picture or just a bit of writing about it to your home learning e-mail address if you would like to. Or pehaps enter one of the competitions on there and tell us all about it.

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

A big thanks to Zainab in reception for sending in a picture of her brownies. Well done Zainab, they looked delicious!

And thanks to Miss Iqbal who sent me her picture of what makes her and her family smile that she did wih her son Adam! You can see it below:

Wednesday Reading Scavenger Hunt

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 8:16am

Good Morning Reception!

Today I thought it would be a fun idea to take part in a READING SCAVENGER HUNT! This is where we have to go around our house/ on the internet to find a book that fits the instruction I give you… Each week I will provide you with a different instruction to find a book!

Your instruction for today is to find a book that makes you LAUGH!

I took part in this challenge too!

The book I have chosen, REALLY makes me laugh! It is called ‘I Need a Wee!’ by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. Has anyone read this book before? It is hilarious! It’s all about a bear called Alan. Now, Alan has a bit of a problem… He really, really needs a wee! But things seem to keep getting in his way! Have a listen to the story using the link below!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Kiy07-9MI

Now can you find a book that makes you laugh?

Can you read it and take a picture?

Can you write a sentence and draw a picture?

Can you tell me what happens and about the main characters in the story?

I can’t WAIT to all hear about it!

Please email all of your pictures/work to  receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk and have fun!! :)

Mrs Glover's Well Being Challenges

Date: 31st Mar 2020 @ 6:44pm

Reception have you seen the well being challenges that Mrs Glover has been putting on all the class blogs. Why not have a go at challenge number 2 and 3.

Challenge 2 is asking you to draw a sunshine and fill it with words and pictures of things that make you smile. Have a look at my sunshine to give you some ideas. I cut up pictures and stuck them in my sunshine but you can draw them as well.

Challenge 3 is a cooking/baking activity that you must do with a grown up. Mrs Glover would like you to cook or bake something and send in photos. You might do it at the end of the week or even plan to do it at the weekend. She even suggested to look at this website for some recipe ideas:

https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes

Me and Adam will be cooking something this week. I'll make sure to blog a photo!

Keep checking the class blogs because Mrs Glover may be setting you some more well being challenges.

Love Mrs Iqbal
