On Friday 13th March, our classroom turned into a sea of red!! We came to school dressed in something red to raise money and join in a Dance-a-thon for Sport Relief.

In the class we took turns to be responsible for a buzzer. As soon as the buzzer was heard we stopped what we were doing and danced along to the Crazy Frog song. It was lots of fun!!!

We played mini football using our fingers, designed new kits and we did some sport colouring.

We celebrated World Book Day in great style!!! In Reception we had a range of costumes including lots of Alice in Wonderland's, Little Red Riding Hood, Peter Rabbit and quite a few Spidermen to name a few...

We started the day with an assembly where we strutted down the catwalk and showed off our costumes. After the catwalk we sat with our Year 4 Reading Buddies and shared a story.

During the day we read lots of stories, made masks, decorated bookmarks and even helped to create some of the characters from the traditional tale 'Chicken Licken' for our display.

Pancake Day

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 11:18am

We celebrated Pancake Day by tasting different toppings on Pancakes and creating a block graph to show our results. The toppings included chocolate, golden syrup, sugar with lemon and plain pancakes. In our class chocolate was the most popular topping choice closely followed by lemon and sugar.

During the week we have read the story 'The Runaway Pancake' and found out that it was very similar to the story 'The Gingerbread Man.' We have wrote some pancake recipes to help the woman in the story to make them for her children.

We had our first VIP Parent Session today. Parents and carers were invited to come and have a look at their child's observation journal online. They were able to look at the observations with their children and talk about the learning that has taken place so far this year. It was lovely to see the grown ups and their children talking and discussing whilst looking at the photos and videos online.

We will continue to have these sessions over the year so all parents and carers have the opportunity to look through their child's observation journal online.

Did you know that an octopus has 9 brains, one in each tentacle and 3 hearts that helps it to stay alive...!!! We watched some divers feeding the rays and swimming with the sharks. This was a little scary!! It was an amazing day!!

On Sudden Hill Hook

Date: 31st Jan 2020 @ 7:27pm

On Monday we found 3 boxes in our classroom. We became 'Super Helper Detectives' and began to look for clues inside and under the boxes.

We found pictures of three boys, a book and a letter from someone called 'Birt.' After some detective work and completing some reading challenges we found out that the three boys were best friends who loved to play with boxes. However, one of the boys became unfriendly and we started to think about how to be a good friend in our circle time sessions.

Parent Vocabulary Stay and Play

Date: 31st Jan 2020 @ 7:10pm

This morning Reception children invited Parents/Carers into our classroom to show how we learn new vocabulary linked to our topic or story of the week. It was great to see so many parents getting involved in the activities. We started by teaching parents our Word Rap and then had a range of activities that supported children in learning vocabulary with some links to our phonics teaching.

Why don't you do the word rap at home using the link below...?

We are learning new words...

Date: 23rd Jan 2020 @ 2:39pm

We have started to learn new words during our English lessons each week. We are using 'Word Rap' to help us learn new words and then putting the word on our brand new Word Wall. Each week we are learning new words that we may hear in our focus story or during our language sessions in the afternoons. The children are determined to put over 100 words on our word wall by the end of the year...! Can we do it...? Yes, we will try...!!!

On Friday 31st January come along to our stay and play sessions. We will be doing a session in the morning at 9.00am until 10.00am and repeat it again in the afternoon at 2.15pm until 3.00pm. The session will be based around how we learn new words. We will start the session with our word rap and then split into our groups to complete some word/phonic based activities. At the end of the session you will be given a parent leaflet with some ideas that you can try at home.

One wintery day Noi's dad goes out fishing and doesn't return. Noi is brave and goes searching for his dad and his friend the whale comes back to help him.

We got a message in a bottle from Noi who left the story and his whale friend for us to look after. We have read the story and made models of the Storm Whale, we wrote some sentences about what Noi imagined would be under the sea and wrote some messages from dad or Noi.

Happy New Year!!

Welcome back into 2020!!! The children have come back to school with an enthusiastic attitide towards their learning, and they have grown a little taller aswell!!!

We have started the new half term with an amazing new story called 'The Storm Whale in Winter.' This story will lead the way into answering our question 'How do we get by with a little help from my friends?' In this theme we will be learning about friendship through our stories and we will also learn about animals that live under the sea.

We will also talk about friends that help us around school with a visit from a lunchtime supervisor, caretaker and first aider in school.

Our experience this half term will be a visit to the Blue Planet Aquarium in February, and we will also be celebrating Chinese New Year and Valentines Day. Watch out for more blogs on our class page for these events and experiences.

The Foggy Foggy Forest

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:50pm

For the last two weeks we have started to think about light and dark through the story 'The Foggy Foggy Forest' by Nick Sharratt. In this story we meet lots of well-known characters in a dark and foggy forest. We have used the story to recognise rhyming words and describe our favourite characters.

Why not visit the website below to listen to the story online...?

Phonics

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:37pm

In Reception we have begun Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme. In this phase we are learning how to correctly pronounce and write the following sounds:

  • Set 1: s, a, t, p.
  • Set 2: i, n, m, d.
  • Set 3: g, o, c, k.
  • Set 4: ck, e, u, r.
  • Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss.

Alongside teaching the above sounds we have started to teach children the skills of segmenting and blending. Segmenting is when children are able to identify each sound in the word, they then blend the sounds together to read the word.

For example, s/a/t as children say the sounds faster they should hear that the word says 'sat.' For further information take a look at the following website which has further information, resources and games that you can use at home.

Reading Books

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:27pm

Reading is an important partnership between home and school and one that we value at Ravensbury Primary. Please can you make sure that you spend at least 10 minutes each night with your child sharing their reading book. As the children are becoming more confident in their Phonics and learning the sounds they will soon begin to use the skills of segmenting and blending to support reading words.

At this early stage talking about the pictures and asking questions linked to the characters, places and experiences in the book is all vital skills in supporting children with their early reading skills.

When you share the reading book at home please comment or tick that it has been shared in the reading record, and make sure it is in school every day. Reading books will be changed every Friday.
