Good Morning Reception!!

Let’s start today’s phonic activity by recapping our Phase 3 tricky words. Start by singing and joining in with the tricky word song at the bottom of this blog.

Now play quick write using the Phase 3 tricky words. Your grown up will say a tricky word and you must write it correctly. Choose 2 tricky words and put them in your own sentences.

Sing along to the ‘ar’ song on the video at the bottom of the blog. How many words will you be able to read…?  

Today’s practise and apply activities are:

Activity 1 – Choose some of the words from the ‘ar’ song and play treasure hunt. Write the words on scraps of paper and hide them in a room inside or in the garden. When you find a word read it and write it.

 

Activity 2 – Play ‘ar’ roll and read.

 

Activity 3 – Write the ‘ar’ word under each picture.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Did you know that this week is Mental Health Awareness Week?

The theme of this week is all about ‘Kindness.’ In these uncertain times that we are living in now showing and receiving kindness is great for our own mental health. Watch the video at the bottom of this blog to give you more information.  

This week we would like you to create a ‘Kindness Jar.’ This is what you need to do…

Get a jar, plastic bowl or any container that you can find at home and label it with something like ________’s Kindness Jar.

Next use the acts of kindness cards for some ideas and choose 7 acts of kindness that you will be able to complete this week. One for each day of the week, including the weekend.

Then write the acts of kindness on scraps of paper or on post it notes.

Fold the paper up and put them in your jar or container.

Each day pull one act of kindness out of your container that you are going to do.

 

Here is Adam's Kindness Jar. Today he has pulled out the act of ‘thinking about someone in need.’

Wellbeing challenge 18.5.20

Good morning everyone, its the start of a new week!

Thank you to everyone who has sent their amazing face mask designs, I've been blown away once again! Have a look below to see what you have all done.

This week it is Mental Health Awareness week so I will be posting some activities linked to this. Mental Health means looking after yourself to make sure that you are happy and healthy. The theme is kindness and involves being kind to yourself and others.

For today I've attached a little booklet for "The power of kindness" where you have to draw or write what kindness means to you and then write (or draw) 5 kind acts that you can do this week (it says month but I think we can squeeze them all into a week!) The acts of kindness can be either being kind to yourself or being kind to others. Perhaps a mix of both would be nice. If you can't print out the booklet then you can just type or write them out like I have :-).

Kindness to me means doing something nice to make somebody feel good and loved.

The 5 things I am going to do are:

1. Make my husband some cups of tea

2. Send a friend a little message through the post to cheer them up.

3. Phone my mum for a chat.

4. Have a nice relaxing foot spa while I watch one of my favourite films (for me)

5. Buy myself a litle treat while I'm out shopping, maybe some nice chocolate! (also for me!)

Today in our maths blog, we are going to be looking at how our numbers are represented in ‘tens frames’ and using them to help us with our early addition skills! Thinking about numbers using frames of ten can be a helpful way to learn basic number facts.

You should see this on your screen:

Let’s work this first one out together! We have to use the tens frames to work out 7 + 7

In the first tens frame, I am going to count 7 counters, and then select ‘done’.

 

As the addition calculation is 7 + 7, I need to add another 7 counters into the second frame…

 

Now I have to ‘combine’ both tens frames together. This means we have to move over the blue counters to fill the tens frame so that we can clearly count all of the counters in an easier way.

 

Now that I have dragged over my blue counters, I can clearly see that the top tens frame is full – it is clear to see that I have ‘10’ counters in the top frame.

To make my counting easier, I can start counting from ‘10’ from the top frame and continue counting the blue counters in the frame below. I can see I need to add on 4 more..

Yay! First question complete! We have worked out the addition calculation 7 + 7 = 14. Can you have a go at working some out on your own??

This week we are going to continue using the story ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ If you haven’t managed t listen to the story, use the link below:

Start by playing one word. Take turns with someone at home to say one word from the story. For example, snail, whale, soot, rock, sea, parrot, crab, school, children, penguins and so on.

 

Today I want you to read the sentences below. After you have read the sentences from the story, can you draw a picture to match the sentence? This will show that you have understood what you have read.

 

The snail sat on a black rock with his friends.

The big whale came out at night when the stars were in the sky.

The sea crashed on the rocks with the snail on the back of the whale.

 

Extra challenge – Can you make up your own sentence from the story and draw a picture?

Wellbeing challenge 15.5.20

Good morning and happy Friday! End of the week already! Fingers crossed we get some sun this weekend.

My last wellbeing challenge of the week is a creative one in case you want to spend some time on it over the weekend.

I’d like you to design your own face mask. As we know, face masks are being worn by many people at the moment to keep help them safe. If you had to wear one, what would you like it to look like? You can have whatever you want on it and make it as crazy as you like!

I’ve attached a template if you would like to use it but don’t worry if you don’t have a printer, you can just draw one like I drew mine! Here is mine for you to have a look at, now if only I could sew…

Wellbeing challenge 14.5.20

Good morning everyone,

I've had a request to make the font on my blog a little easier to read so that some of the younger children can have a go at reading it themselves which is a fantastic idea, so hopefully this will be a bit easier to read!

Today I would like you to think about the two main characters in the story, Snail and the Whale… What do they look like? What colours can you see? What shapes can you see? What size are the animals? Talk to your grown up about one of the animals. Remember to talk in full sentences…

Choose one character and write some sentences describing it and draw a picture of the animal.

The Snail has a hard shell on his back. The shell has a striped pattern that is brown and white. It moves very slowly because it is a small animal.

Let’s start today’s phonic activity by joining in with a new song called the oo sound song. Click the video at the bottom of the blog.   

I know after reading some of your emails and watching your videos that it is a little bit confusing when thinking about the way we say words with the long and short oo sound.

Watch my video at the bottom of the blog where I am explaining how to read words with the long and short oo sounds.

Can you read these words with the long and short oo sounds? How many can you read? Ask a grown up to time you. 

Today’s practise and apply activities are all about the long and short ‘oo’ sound. Choose 1, 2, 3 or all 4 activities. Which one will you choose?

 

Can you sort out the words into the correct box in the table?

 

Play long oo and short oo treasure hunt. Cut up or write the words and hide them in a space inside or outside. Find a word and read it and put it in the right container labelled short oo or long oo.

 

Play the short and long ‘oo’ roll and read game.

 

Choose the long and short sound stories. Can you read them and make a list of all the words with the short or long ‘oo’ sounds?

Wellbeing challenge 13.5.20

Good morning everyone,

I'm sorry I didn't post a wellbeing challenge yesterday but I was in school! I meant to do it the night before but then forgot and had an early night ready for school yesterday, oops! Sorry about that but I'm back today and have a choice of 2 for you to do to make up for it.

You've been very creative lately (please see the past challenges below!) so I'm giving you something a bit different today. One is i you would like to relax and one is if you would like to have a bit of fun.

The first challenge is to do Jason Manford's comedy kids quiz at 1.30pm today, available from the following YouTube link. If you can't do it at 1.30 then it will be up for a few days after. and if you want more then have a look on his YouTube channel for past quizzes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhVLZjO7Tms

The second challenge is also at 1.30pm although I think you can watch it later if you're not free then! The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth are doing Turtle Time! A live video of their Green Sea Turtle who is called Friday. I always find watching sea animals very relaxing so you could watch it, learn some facts about turtles and then have a go at drawing the turtle. The Snail and the Whale Movable Craft

Have you been enjoying ‘The Snail and the Whale’ story this week? Today we are going to be making a moveable craft using paper plates linked to this exciting tale! Take a look at what you will be making below…

 

Isn’t it fantastic?!

You will need:

Paper plate

2 Shades of blue paint/pens/pencils

Lollipop stick

Felt tip pens

Different coloured card (ideally white/blue/grey)

Scissors

Sellotape

 

Instructions:

Begin by painting/colouring in your paper plate in two shades of blue – if you don’t have blue you could add a bit of white/yellow to what you have and recreate the scene where the whale gets stuck on the beach!

If you are painting, while it’s drying you can begin to create the snail and the whale! On a piece of card, draw a picture of the two friends and colour them in! It’s better to use card over paper as it will stand up better when you play with your paper plate. Attach a lollipop stick to it using Sellotape.

Cut a sun shape out of yellow card and glue this onto your paper plate. Then carefully cut a line along the bottom of the paper plate… this should go from one side to the other but not go to the actual edge or you’ll cut the bottom off the paper plate.

Pop your lollipop stick through the hole and your snail and the whale craft is ready to be played with!

Today in our maths learning we are continuing to add more and take away using ‘first, then and now’ mathematical stories. Please refer to yesterday’s maths blog if you missed it!

We use the ‘first, then and now’ structure to create mathematical stories in contexts children can relate to. Placing a calculation into addition stories can help children to see the calculation in a meaningful context. Children are able to visualise the addition calculation as they tell the addition story.

 

Take a look at all of these superstars below who completed their ‘First, then, and now’ addition stories yesterday! Well done J

    

 

Today we are going to be looking at mathematical stories to help us subtract/take-away.  Presenting subtraction in this way can help young children to visualise the calculation and understand that some are being taken away.

Take a look at the first question below!

Count the frogs in the ‘first’ column… how many are there altogether? Write the answer in the box below (5).

Then count the frog that has jumped from the log in the ‘then’ column… write this in the box below (1.)

In the ‘now’ box, you should be able to count how many frogs are left. Write this underneath (4.)

Well done! The answer to this 'first, then and now' question  is 5 – 1 = 4!

Good Morning Reception!!

This week we have listened to a new story called ‘The Snail and the Whale.’ If you haven’t listened to it look on Monday’s blog.  

 

Today I want you to look at the two main characters in the story: the snail and the whale. What words would you use to describe them? Tell your grown up your ideas…Remember to talk in full sentences about the characters.

For example,

The snail has a hard shell on his back.

The whale has a huge body that is white and dark blue. 

Your challenge today is to cut up the words on the sheet and try to make a sentence from the story. If you don’t have a printer write the words on scraps of paper. When you have made the sentence stick it on a piece a paper and draw a picture about the sentence. This will show that you have understood what you have read!

There are two sentences that you must work out. Grown ups the answers are on the third sheet for you to check.

Pick individual phonemes section and click all the sounds that we have learnt so far from Phase 2 and 3.

 

Today we are going to learn a new sound but it’s a little bit confusing because it looks the same as the one from Monday!!! It’s called the short ‘oo’ sound. Think of the word foot when you are saying the short ‘oo’ sound. Look at the words on the picture, can you read them to your grown up…?

Bees and Pollination Experiment

Good Morning Reception!
Today we are going to be taking part in a science experiment! How fun!

You will need:

Small paper bags

Cheesy puff crisps

Bee Finger Puppet (see link)

Flower Cut-outs (see link)

 

Method:

Explain to children that this is an experiment to show how a bee helps with the pollination of flowers.

As a bee moves from one flower to another it moves the pollen between them.

Make a flower by putting a picture on the front of a paper bag.

Put the cheesy puffs inside the bag.

Give children a bee finger puppet and let them fly to a flower and grab some cheesy puffs. Explain that they can eat the cheesy puffs, but not lick or wipe the crumbs off their finger!

After they have had chance to eat a few crisps and get lots of crumbs on their fingers, let them fly to another flower and land on it.

What has happened to the crumbs from their fingers?

Some of the ‘pollen’ has been left behind on another flower – they have successfully pollinated a flower, which will then help it to make new seeds!

Today in our maths learning we are going to continue focusing on counting on and adding more! Please refer to yesterday’s blog if you did not see it.

First let’s remind ourselves of yesterday’s starter game, ‘I count, you count’

This is a game which can be used to practise counting on from different starting points. Adults begin by counting as you point to yourselves. When you point to the children they continue the count. This is great for creative rhythmic patterns:

1, 2,              3, 4,                5,6,                     7,8

1,2,3                 4,5,6                  7,8,9

3,4,5,6        7,8,9,10

 

Today we are going to be using the ‘first, then and now’ structure. This can be used to create mathematical stories in contexts children can relate to. Placing a calculation into addition stories can help children to see the calculation in a meaningful context. Children are able to visualise the addition calculation as they tell the addition story.

 At first, the children need to re-count all of the items to see how many they have altogether. E.g, 1, 2, 3, 4….5, 6,7. When they are ready, encourage children to count on, e.g 4, 5, 6, 7. Playing games like ‘I count, you count’ will support this step.

Below I have attached a video to a read-along story of ‘Mr Gumpy’s Outing’ by John Burningham. It tells a tale of Mr Gumpy, who decides to take a trip along the river in his boat. But the children, the rabbit, the cat and other friends begin to join him! 

Once you have read this story with children, ask them to build a boat and create their own first, then, now stories as different groups of characters climb aboard. Encourage children to count how many to altogether as more children join them!

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend! I spent a lot of time in the sun, in fact possibly a bit too much time! I also had some delicious food and lovely video chats with some of my friends.

Thanks again for all your wellebing challenge e-mails. It really cheers me up whenever I get one and see what you've all been up to!

Today's wellbeing challenge is actually Miss Bryce's idea so thanks Miss Bryce! It's a creative one and is to design your own superhero.

Who would they be?

What would they do?

What would they wear?

Have a think about what is important to you and then either draw, make or write about your superhero.

Today in our maths learning we are going to be focusing on counting on and adding more!

Let’s begin with a warm up activity with adults at home…

‘I count, you count’

This is a game which can be used to practise counting on from different starting points. Adults begin by counting as you point to yourselves. When you point to the children they continue the count. This is great for creative rhythmic patterns:

1, 2,              3, 4,                5,6,                     7,8

1,2,3                 4,5,6                  7,8,9

3,4,5,6        7,8,9,10

It is a story all about a greedy snake, he is very hungry to eat some little mice for his dinner! This story helps children to understand the concept of counting forwards and backwards. It introduces the skill of counting on from a new number, rather than starting at one each time.

You can extend this learning at home through the following activities:

Mouse Count: Recreate the ‘Mouse Count’ story by using different resources as characters or even drawing ten mice and a snake! Retell the story by practising adding on from different numbers each time!

Counting on using fingers: Ask children to show you 5 fingers… now 2 more. How many fingers are there all together? Did you know there are 7? Did you count them all? Encourage children to acknowledge having five fingers on one hand, and counting on 6, 7.

Construction counting: The children take turns to roll a 1-3 dice and collect 1,2 or 3 cubes to add to their tower. If they are ready, encourage them to count on as they add their cubes each time. How high can they build their towers until they fall?
