Thursday 4th June - Maths

Date: 4th Jun 2020 @ 9:16am

Good Morning Reception!

Get ready for Thursday’s fluent-in-five…

Today in our maths learning, we are going to be learning about subtraction by taking part in some practical subtraction games below!

Pirate Treasure – Taking away from 10

This is a game for 2 people. Using ‘treasure’ items (coins, gems, pebbles, shells, etc), ask the children to line them up into a line of ten. Children can take turns to choose whether they take away 1,2 or 3 treasure pieces at a time. The winner is the player who avoids taking the last item!

Next step: When children take away items, can they write this down as a number sentence and work out how many they have left? E.g 10 – 3 = 7, 7 – 1 = 6…

Pass it on!

Each child starts with 6 treasure pieces (you could turn into ‘pirates’ for this one!). Using a 1-3 dice, they roll the dice and pass the corresponding number of treasure pieces to the person on their left. The winner is the first person (or pirate!) to give away all of their treasure. Encourage the children to count how many they have left or explain the number sentence as they pass on their treasure e.g ‘I had 6 pieces of treasure, I am giving away 2, so now I have 4 left’ ‘6 – 2 = 4’

Outside ‘Walk the Plank’

Create a countdown game by chalking numbers 10-0 leading towards the ‘end of a plank!’ Provide a giant 1-3 dice. Ask children to roll the dice and jump down from 10 to 0. The first person to reach the end has to walk the plank! Abandon Ship!

I hope you enjoy taking part in these fun subtraction games! I can’t wait to see pictures of your learning! Email in to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk! I can’t wait to hear from you! J Enjoy!
