Teaching and Learning at Ravensbury
Learning at Ravensbury Community School
At Ravensbury, we believe every child can achieve their best and “soar” in whatever they choose to do. Our lessons are exciting and fast-paced, and pupils have a say in how and what they learn.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to help pupils master their year group’s learning, with plenty of chances to explore, deepen, and stretch their knowledge. We encourage curiosity and creativity, helping children understand the world and each other. Learning at Ravensbury is active, collaborative, and engaging.
How Pupils Learn Best
We know that pupils learn best when:
They develop independence and understand how they learn.
Learning is meaningful, hands-on, and encourages curiosity and teamwork.
They are challenged at the right level to help them grow.
They can connect what they learn to real-life experiences.
Teaching includes feedback, independence, challenge, and engagement.
Assessment helps teachers support pupils, repeating or extending learning as needed.
The classroom is safe, organised, and welcoming.
Home and school work together, with purposeful home learning.
A Mastery Approach
We believe all pupils can master the skills and knowledge expected for their age. Some pupils go beyond. Our lessons help children:
Learn consistently and fluently
Apply knowledge in different situations
Remember and use learning long-term
Reason and solve problems
Pupils have time to understand, practice, and apply what they learn. Learning moves at a steady pace so that no child is left behind, while also challenging those who are ready to achieve more.
How We Support Learning
Teachers plan lessons that build on what pupils already know.
Pupils get feedback and help quickly when they need it.
Lessons allow pupils to make choices, practice skills, and explore learning deeply.
Resources support learning in school and at home.
Assessment
We assess learning in two main ways:
Ongoing Assessment (Formative): Teachers check daily how pupils are doing and give immediate feedback. Pupils also reflect on their own learning.
Termly Assessment (Summative): Teachers review progress at four points in the year using tests and work in pupils’ books. This shows how pupils are doing compared to national expectations.
National Assessments
Our pupils also take part in nationally standardised tests:
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) profile at the end of Reception
Phonics screening check in Year 1
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 tests and teacher assessments (Years 2 and 6)
Multiplication Times Table Check (Year 4)
These assessments help us track progress and ensure every child reaches their full potential.
