Connected Curriculum

Our Curriculum at Ravensbury Community School

At Ravensbury, every child is seen as a unique individual. By the time they leave us, we aim for them to have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to face the challenges of the 21st century. Our school values—we create, we explore, we care, we soar—are at the heart of everything we do.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that helps children develop core skills in reading, writing, and maths, while also encouraging creativity, curiosity, and a love of learning. Each topic is based on real-life, enquiry-style learning, which helps children think critically, solve problems, and explore the world around them.

A key part of our approach is using a Core Text for each topic. This links reading and writing with other subjects, making learning meaningful and memorable. Children often learn in role, such as a historian or an astronaut, to help them connect emotionally with their learning. Topics end with an Experience—like a performance, exhibition, or project—where children can share what they’ve learned. Visits and visitors also enrich learning and bring topics to life.

We organise learning so that knowledge and skills build over time. Subjects like Geography, History, Art, and Design & Technology are taught through our Connected Curriculum, which allows children to make links across subjects while keeping each subject’s identity. We also focus on key vocabulary and concepts to help children express their understanding clearly.

Our curriculum aims to develop the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We want children to become confident readers, creative thinkers, responsible citizens, and lifelong learners. We regularly assess progress to ensure every child is on track and supported to reach their potential.

Religious Education (RE)
In line with UK law, parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE lessons if they wish to provide their own religious education. We recommend discussing this with us so you understand the value and aims of RE before making a decision.
