Supporting Every Child at Ravensbury Community School

At Ravensbury, we want every child to reach their full potential. We provide the support each child needs to be included, learn, and take part in all aspects of school life. Some children may need extra help for a short time to meet their needs or improve their learning, and we make reasonable adjustments for children with disabilities to help them access the curriculum, the school environment, and learning opportunities.

How We Support Special Educational Needs (SEN)

We provide support for a range of special educational needs, grouped into four main areas:

  • Communication and Interaction – helping children who find it hard to communicate or interact with others.

  • Cognition and Learning – supporting children with learning difficulties or challenges with understanding new concepts.

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health – assisting children who need help with managing emotions, behaviour, or mental health.

  • Sensory and Physical – providing support for children with physical disabilities or sensory needs.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

We are proud to support children who are learning English as an additional language. Our EAL department provides both pastoral support and specialist teaching to help children develop the English skills they need to succeed in school and make friends.

Children usually work with us for up to an hour a day, either in a small group or individually. We focus on skills like reading, writing, phonics, vocabulary, and language needed for subjects across the curriculum, including Mathematics. Learning is fun, and we often use games to practise language skills and help children make friends.

We may also set home learning to reinforce what has been taught at school. Parents can support their child by creating a calm, quiet space at home for learning. Asking questions about the work in your home language is a wonderful way to help your child understand and practise new skills.
