Year 3LF: Blog items
Date: 20th May 2023 @ 11:39am
Recently, we went on a school trip to Chester. When we arrived in Chester, we took a look around the Deva Discovery Centre. Inside, we got to explore many different aspects of Roman life. We saw areas where archaeologists had dug and uncovered years of Roman history, became archaeologists and looked for bones, and even got to dress up in Roman attire. In the afternoon, we became Roman soldiers and went out on patrol. We took our shields and weapons before marching through the city of Chester to the Roman gardens. In the gardens, we had the chance to learn about army formations and even take part in a battle. It was an enjoyable day for all.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had a look at a whole range of different artefacts, from books and coins to shields and armour. A firm favourite was the armour, as everyone enjoyed having the chance to dress up as a Roman soldier. Also, we discovered how heavy it was to put on Roman armour, let alone wear it all day. We also learnt about primary and secondary sources and how reliable these sources are.

To launch our topic, why were the Romans so powerful? We enjoyed having a Roman banquet. First, we created laurel wreaths to wear, and many of the children even dressed as Romans for the day. We learnt and joined in with many different songs and discovered all the different foods the Romans ate and brought to Britain. When it was time to eat, we ate goat's cheese, porridge, honey, figs, dates, mackrel, olives, and much more. Some of the food we enjoyed and some we did not, but everyone had their favourites. The cold meats and fruitcake were definitely a hit for most of the children. It was definitely a fantastic way to start our topic.

In design technology, we researched, designed, and made our own sandwiches. We spent time look at the different nutitience if different foods and what a balanced diet looks like. Once we had created our sandwiches, we evaluated them against the original design brief and reflected on what would have made them even better.

In art this week, we used our mixed media artwork from last week to create a collage. We started by cutting out a rectangle for the sky and then created a section of mountains in the midground, followed by a section of mountains in the foreground. The we then chose other materials to add to create small details such as the sun, flowers, stars, and trees. The final results were fantastic.

Today in art, we have been exploring mixed media. We started by looking at what mixed media is and different collages that have been created through mixed media. We discussed what we liked about the different pieces of art and learnt where the background, midground, and foreground were. Then it was time for us to have a go. We had the chance to use paint, oil pastels, ink, bubble wrap, and printers to create our different pieces of art.

In design technology, we have been exploring what a balanced diet looks like. We are going to be using our knowledge of nutrition to create a balanced sandwich. This week, we tasted white, wholegrain, 50/50, seeded and tiger bread to help us decide which bread we liked best, and then we explored what nutrition is provided by the different types of bread.

This week in maths, we have been looking at the properties of 2D shapes and 3D shapes. We then began looking at the nets of 3D shapes and matching the nets to their shapes. On Wednesday, we made our own 3D shapes from nets.

In writing today, we were looking at speech sentences based around the book Stone Age Boy. To start with, we found examples in the text, before collecting our own ideas. Then we wrote different sentences for the characters in the text. We worked hard to use a variety of different speech verbs and include the correct speech punctuation.
Date: 5th Jan 2023 @ 2:59pm
To launch our new topic, what lies beneath our feet? We found out all about Stonehenge. We then used biscuits to recreate the well-known monument. We found it a little bit difficult to balance the biscuits, but when they did balance, we were proud of our creations. Here are our final designs.

In reading, we have been exploring how to work out what different vocabulary means. We used a variety of techniques, including reading around the text, looking for root words, prefixes, and suffixes, and employing synonyms. All these strategies helped us discover what new vocabulary meant, and we will now be able to include it in our writing.

This week we have continued to work with Mrs Mcaffer on our Amazon artwork. We practised drawing an Amazon bird with continuous lining at the start of the lesson. Next, we focused on using shading when drawing our rainforest birds to create more texture. We then completed a carousel of activities where we created leaves, used oil pastels to create Amazon birds and painted rainforest flowers on a mural.

This week Year 3 had a wonderful time exploring colour, shape and line in their Art lesson. They studied the work of Irene Guerriero, a South American artist who used the rainforest as her inspiration. She is famous for creating huge pieces of work and so that is what the children set about doing. They started by collecting some inspiration in their sketch books. Once they had practiced drawing the shapes of different leaves the children had a go at colour mixing to create different shades of green. They then all collaborated on one large sheet to create a mural. We can't wait to finish it next week and see it displayed outside the hall in the next few weeks.
Food from the Amazon Rainforest
Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 1:30pm
This half term our topic is 'What is it like in the Amazon Basin?' For our launch, we tried different foods that would be available in the Amazon Rainforest. We tried lots of new food and drink. Not many of us were a fan of the coconut millk but the persimmon fruit was a firm favourite.

Thid week in maths we are looking at recalling multiplication facts. We are focusing on revisiting our 2s,5s and 10s and also learning our 3s, 4s and 8s. In class today, we used arrays and repeated addition to help us with our recall.

This half term our connected curriculum topic is 'What is it like in the Amazon Basin?' We looked at the different types of animals you would find living in the Amazon Rainforest. Then we chose one of those animals to complete a drawing of. Here are our final pieces of art.

Today we celebrated Let's Celebrate Me Day. We came to school dressed as something that represented us. We dressed in our favourite colours, clothes that represent us and our ambitions.
During the day, we read the book Dot. We then used watercolours to create our own dots, which represent us. Here are some of our outfits and art work from the day.

In science this week we have been finding out what happens to our bicep and tricep, when we move our arm. We made our own moving arm to see what happened to our muscles.

Last week we had an exciting visitor come into school. They came and shared lots of information all about Ancient Egypt. We enjoyed taking part in a crack the code written in hieroglyphics, a game of hounds and jackals, measuring like Ancient Egyptians and reneacting a mummification. At the end of the day, we even dressed up as mummies.

In English, we have been reading the story of The Egyptian Cinderella. This week we are focusing on speech. The children wrote their own speech bubbles for different characters in the text. They then used their speech bubbles in the freeze frames they created to retell the story.
Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 10:14am
This week in the connected curriculum, we created our own human timeline. We explored some of the key events that happened in the Egyptian era. We learnt when the first pyramids were built and when Tutankhamun reigned over Egypt. Then we put the events in chronological order.
Date: 8th Sep 2022 @ 11:16am
On Wednesday we had our connected curriculum launch for our topic 'What was it like to live in Ancient Egypt?" In class, we learned all about the hieroglyphic writing system used by the Egyptians. We then went looking for as many hieroglyphics as we could find on the playground. Once we had located each one, we unjumbled the hieroglyphics to discover the word mummification.

In art this week, we have been focusing on the artist Noel Badges Pugh. We took inspiration from his drawings of seashells to create our own. We used continuous line drawing to create the outline and then used a range of mark making techniques such as contoured lines, dashes, curves, hatching and cross-hatching to make the shells more 3 dimensional. We even thought about shadows and created these again using mark making techniques.
Date: 15th Jun 2022 @ 10:05am
In maths, we have been learning all about scales and reading different intervals. Today we estimated the mass of different objects in the classroom before weighing each object. We used our knowledge of reading scales to help us.
Date: 25th May 2022 @ 5:23pm
In geography, we have been learning all about mountains. So far we have looked at the tallest mountain, what the climate is like at the summit and the different features. On Monday we used atlases to identify where different mountains and hills were in the UK.
