Year 4RJ: Blog items

4LJ Blog 1

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 1:53pm

What a fantastic week we have had to start Year 4! We have been learning about lots of different things.

In maths, we have been using lots of mathematical words such as intervals, increase, digit, number and numeral. We have represented and created numbers to 1000 as well as partitioned numbers to 1000. Later on in the week, we began to use numberlines to plot missing intervals.

We began our connected curriculum this week and have started learning about the Maya! We played an ancient Maya game called Pok-Ta-Pok where we weren't allowed to use our hands or feet to try and get a ball in to a hoop. It was really hard!

We started our computing learning this week, which is all about how to keep ourselves safe online. We created pposters explaining how and what you should do if you get an unkind message.

In our reading and writing lessons, we started reading the text 'Hero Twins' which is a story of two ancient Maya twins called Hunahpu (Hoo-Na-Poo) and Xbalanque (Sh-ba-larn-kay). We described the lords of death and the twins using expande noun phrases. We had to remember to include a comma!

Music was a focus this week. On Thursday we started our music lessons with Miss Kent and had our singing assembly too!

We talked all about teeth in science this week and discovered that children usually have 20 teeth and adults usually have 32 teeth. Incisors are the teeth at the front of your mouth and are used for cutting. Canines are for ripping and molars are for chewing and grinding food.

Next week, we are looking forward to start out swimming lessons and we must be at school by 9am on Wednesday morning because we will be leaving at 9am!

This week we have been given words to practise spelling at home, as well as some maths homework. These need to be brought in next Friday (16th).

Don't forget about the meet the teacher session next Tuesday (13th)

Check back next week for another blog update!

Victorious Vikings!

Date: 8th Jun 2022 @ 4:46pm

Were the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings successful invaders?

Year 4 arrived to school today dressed in their amazing viking gear. We completed many outdoor activities, such as invasion and team games. We then went inside, where we raided an Anglo-Saxon village (year 5 classrooms) to find hidden artefacts.

When we returned to class, we used icing and marshallows to create a replica of Thor's hammer, before exploring how Vikings travel and why they invaded.

It was an exciting day, that all children and staff enjoyed! Children behaved really well, and enthusiastically tried each activity.

Times Table Champions!

Date: 18th May 2022 @ 12:02pm

Year 4 had a wonderful afternoon showing our adults all of the fantastic times table learning we have been doing in class this year.  We played games, made fortune tellers and raced on TT Rockstars and the children did an amazing job of demonstrating the techniques we have practiced.

Thank you so much to everyone who came in and helped us to make it a success!

We hope you found it as useful as we did - please let us know if you didn't manage to get hold of one of the practice packs we handed out and we will send it home ASAP!

Our School Trip to Castleton!

Date: 6th May 2022 @ 3:08pm

This week, Year 4 were luck enough to go on a school trip to Castleton and had an exciting expedition down into the Blue John mine!

On the way to Castleton, we looked around to see how the environment around use was changing, we could see less houses and more trees and fields and even managed to spot some cows and sheep with tiny new-born lambs!

When we arrived at the mine, we were taken down to explore by Brian, a guide from the village. He told us that the mine was created around 300 million years ago! It was made by fast-running water which eroded the rock and millions of tiny fossils made of shell and bone. We walked down 245 steps to get to the bottom of the mine where we saw the amazing Blue John crystals that give the mine its name.

After we finished our tour, we got back on the coach and headed into Castleton town centre for lunch. After lunch, we took part in a traffic survey - monitoring how many cars, vans, buses, motorbikes and bicycles went past. We will also complete a traffic survey in Clayton, so we can compare our results with those of Castleton.

We were so incredibly impressed with the way that Year 4 conducted themselves during this trip. They were respectful, responsible and safe throuhgout the whole day and were so polite to the adults both from school and in the mine and village.

We are so proud of you all!

Well done Year 4 :)

Amazing Artists!

Date: 3rd May 2022 @ 2:41pm

Today we have been using our incredible sketching skills to draw rural areas in the Peak District before our trip there tomorrow!
we thought about what kind of marks we could make to show light and shadow, how we could use this to make our pictures appear 3D and we learned about foreground and background and how we could use these to help us when sketching.

We used watercolour paints to add some colour to our drawings. Have a look at the images we created - do you think you would like to visit any of these locations?

Spooky Stories

Date: 27th Apr 2022 @ 3:17pm

Today we started our new text, Room 13. We have been looking at spooky stories that create tension and suspense.
Using our knowledge from previous scary texts and by looking at the front cover and blurb, we made predictions about this text and hid them inside our own Room 13.

We will check back and see who made a correct prediction once we have finished the book!

Our CC Launch!

Date: 27th Apr 2022 @ 3:01pm

This half-term, we are exploring the question 'How is Castleton different from Clayton?'

To launch our geography learning, we completed an orienteering activity. Using clues and the entire playground, children had to mark locations on their map.

They were given challenging clues that included using points on a compass. (For example: take 10 steps south-west from the stage).

Take a look at how we did!

Egg-citing Easter Crafts!

Date: 29th Mar 2022 @ 12:02pm

LKS2 have been hard at work creating some fantastic Easter a crafts - we were all so impressed with how much time and effort clearly went into each wonderful creation!

All of the teachers really struggled to choose a winner but finally managed to make a decision. Have a look at our our winners below!

Science Week

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 2:10pm

This week we have been celebrating Science Week!
The children worked in groups to use spaghetti and marshmallows to create the tallest tower they could.  It ended up being a lot trickier than we thought it would be and we had to use all of our team-work skills to succeed.

Have a look at our structures below - which one do you think won?

World Book Day

Date: 7th Mar 2022 @ 5:01pm

Year 4 had such a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day this year! We investigated a new author called Nizrana Farook who writes books about animals set in incredible places!
We started to read her first ever book called 'The Girl who Stole and Elephant' a story about Chaya, our hero who leads her friends and a gorgeous elephant on a noisy, fraught, joyous adventure through the jungle where revolution is stirring and leeches lurk. Will stealing the queen’s jewels be the beginning or the end of everything for the intrepid gang? We will have to wait and see!

The children then created some wonderful elephant poems using the skills we practiced last half term.

In the afternoon we had so much fun going in the hall to perform a catwalk to show off our costumes to the other Year 3 and 4 chidlren. Have a look below to see some of our amazing costumes. We also had a great time trying to work out which members of staff were hidden by the masked singer.. some were really tricky!

Water Poetry!

Date: 18th Feb 2022 @ 4:31pm

Year 4 have created some fantastic poems this week which we then typed up and made into a book. We are selling these for a £1 donation which will be given to Water Aid Charity.
If you would like to purchase one of our books, please bring in £1 or access SIMSPay.

Fantastic Behaviour!

Date: 18th Feb 2022 @ 9:25am

Yesterday, year 4 celebrated their amazing behaviour, by taking part in a 'Just Dance Disco!'

Everyone has worked extremely hard this half term, and it was lovely to celebrate our behaviour and determination with you.

Have a lovely break,

Miss Brookes and Miss Kenwell

Maths Learning

Date: 11th Feb 2022 @ 3:20pm

This week in maths we have been working with decimals. We used our knowledge of placing decimals on a number line to look at different measures of potion ingredients and ordered them from smallest to largest.

Have a go at this game at home to practise your new skills!

Amazing Artists!

Date: 8th Feb 2022 @ 3:47pm

We have been creating our own wave sculptures as part of our CC topic 'How would we survive without water?'

Have a look at how creative we have been with our colours and designs!

Parts of a River

Date: 14th Jan 2022 @ 2:55pm

In geography, we have been investigating the different parts of a river. We have learned some tricky new vocabulary. See if you can explain which part of a river each of these words is for:

  • bank
  • basin
  • floodplain
  • tributary
  • meander
  • mouth
  • sediment
  • silt
  • source

Investigating Different States

Date: 14th Jan 2022 @ 2:50pm

We have started our new science topic 'Changing States'.  Our first task was to explore different materials and decide whether they were solids or liquids. There were some very tricky materials such as jelly and cornflour.

Have a look at how we sorted our materials - do you agre with our decisions?

Rain Dance!

Date: 8th Jan 2022 @ 10:42am

"How would we survive without water?"

To begin our new connected curriculum unit 'how would we survive without water', year 4 attempted to change the weather! We watched an interesting video about rain dancing, before performing our own rain dance in the hall.

When we began our dance, the sky was blue and clear - there was not a cloud in sight. Within 24 hours, it began to snow! Our rain dance might have worked a little too well, but it was exciting to know we were successful.

Christmas Party!

Date: 15th Dec 2021 @ 10:14am

Yesterday, year 4 participated in a very special treat. We spoke to Santa! He told us how well we had all behaved, and was very impressed with our hard work (especially our earthquake drills and swimming lessons!)

We then celebrated with a Christmas Party. We played party games, had a disco and won prizes.

Year 4 have worked very hard this half term, and we could not be more proud of them.

Well done year 4!

Have a fantastic holiday,

Miss Brookes and Miss Kenwell.

Amazing Artwork!

Date: 8th Dec 2021 @ 9:02am

Year 4 have been working with Mrs McAffer to create some fantastic prints and detailed drawings based on the work of Margaret Taylor-Burroughs. Have a look at what we created and see if you can guess who we have been drawing!

Learning new skills in PE!

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 3:37pm

This week, we were really lucky to have two City coaches in to practise some skills with. The children had a great time learning how to get into space and pass the ball without it being intercepted.

Have a look at us in action!

The Digestive System

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 3:54pm

This week, we started our new science topic of digestion. We learnt about the different organs that we have to help us digest our food.
It was a bit tricky trying to guess where we can find each of the organs but we have some fantastic ideas and by the end of the lesson we could identify all of them!

Maya Tortillas!

Date: 21st Oct 2021 @ 3:21pm

As part of our Connected Curriculum topic 'The Maya: What can they teach us?' we have been learning about Mayan foods.
The children tested different Mayan foods last week and chose which ones they wanted to include in their recipe. They then designed their tortilla and wrote out the recipe using lots of imperative verbs.

Take a look at our final creations - which ones would you like to try?

Eggcellent Eggsperiment!

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 11:29am

In science, Year 4 have been learning about teeth.
We have learnt about the different type of teeth, what their functions are and have looked at what teeth are made of.

We carried out an experiment to see the effect that different types of drinks have on our teeth. We couldn't use real teeth so we used egg shells instead as they have a similar reaction.
First, we had to plan out our experiment and make a prediction.  Most of us thought that coke or lucozade would have the worst effect on the egg shells.
Then we carried out our experiement - the children were amazing at measuring out the right amounts of liquid using a measuring jug.
We have been checking on the eggs each day and recording our observations.

Check back in to see which drink ended up changing the egg shells the most and what conclusions we drew from this.

Exploring the Library

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 10:44am

Year 4 have had a wonderful time using the library again - the children have really missed it! We spent some time reminding ourselves of how everything is organised and how we can look after the space and the books and then we had some time to relax and unwind with a good book.

Every child has chosen a library book this week and has taken it home with them. These are due back on Wednesday. We hope you enjoy reading them together!
