Year 4RJ: Blog items

Summer 2 Week 2

Date: 16th Jun 2023 @ 1:48pm

This week has been hot, hot, hot!

The big event of this week is that we have completed the MTC! It was quick, and the children did fantastically because of their hard work. There is no pass mark for the MTC, and it is scored out of 25, with 6 seconds to answer each question before it dissappeared. Scores will be sent home with the end of year reports.

We practised the dance for our end of year KS2 performance and used to glockenspiels to practise our song.  In PE, we began our unit on gymnastics and focussed on travelling.

At swimming lots of children have now moved away from using equipment in the pool which is fantastic!

Viking Day

Date: 9th Jun 2023 @ 2:27pm

On Tuesday, Year 4 celebrated our Viking day where we came dressed as Vikings, and participated in  a range of Viking activities.

At the beginning of the day, we decorated our shields and took them outside to play some team games. One was called fishing. Later, we raided an Anglo-Saxon village and found lots of artefacts! After breaktime, we raided a British village and Miss Bryce and Mrs Caine were not very happy...they came back to class to find that their furniture had been plundered! oops! We celebrated our victory with mead.

We explored Thor's hammer next, and created it using marshmallows or flapjacks. We're not sure Thor's real hammer was that tasty...

In the afternoon, we began our CC unit and explored the similarities and difference between the Anglo-Saxon and Viking invasions!

Castleton!

Date: 21st May 2023 @ 2:59pm

On Monday, year 4 ventured to Castleton! Whilst we were there, we visited Speedwell Cavern - a mine where you travel underground on a boat! Although it was spooky at first, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

We also completed a traffic survey and field sketch which we will now compare with Clayton.

Summer 1 Week 2

Date: 28th Apr 2023 @ 1:47pm

What a week!

This week, we tried to swim to Paris...only joking! In our swimming lesson, we were challenged to swim as many lengths of the swimming pool as we could. There is a challenge that many Manchester schools are taking part in at the moment, which encourages children to swim for as long as they can. We will find out how many length we did next week, and see if we managed to swim to Paris.

In science, we looked at classifciation keys, and how we would classify different animals using keys. Our CC focussed on us being geographers and comparing Castleton and Clayton using ordnance survey maps. Clayton is a part of a city, whereas Castleton is a village, so they are very different! Did you know that Clayton has a natue reserve, but Castleton does not?

In our writing lessons, we are writing persuasive leaflets to persuade our linked Y4 class to visit Clayton.

Please remember to bring in empty cereal boxes next week, and to bring in the trip letters. There is bank holiday on Monday and a strike day on Tuesday :)

Wicked Wednesday with the school linking project

Date: 19th Apr 2023 @ 2:30pm

What a wicked Wednesday morning Year 4 have had. We had two visitors from HOME who worked with us on some drama. We explored friendships, and how to work together as a team. We had such a great morning, and the visitors, Izzy and Kris, spoke to Mrs Hughes on their way out of school, and said how they were impressed they were by the fantastic behaviour and attitudes shown this morning.

We will continue with our school linking project throughout the rest of our time in year 4.

Library Visit

Date: 24th Mar 2023 @ 12:22pm

On Tuesday morning, we visited Beswick library as part of our world book day celebrations!

When we arrived at the library, we were taken upstairs by the librarians to the children's section. We were gifted a book of our choie by the library to take home and keep. We were told that borrowing library books is free, so everyone should do that.

The library runs lots of clubs, such as art and lego clubs and computing clubs. Gerard told how much he enjoyed school, in particular reading at school.

We will definitely want to visit again.

Thank you to all parents and carers for booking pupil progress meeting appointments. Please see Mr Jones if you did not book an appointment.

We started our  new unit on electricity in science, and found different things in the classroom that use electricity.

Our Computing learning focussed on scratch, using different algorithms and scripts to make our sprite move.

On Wednesday we had such fun when swimming this week and we even managed to swim twenty five meteres, with some of us doing that without any support.

Check in next week to see what else we have been up to!

Spring 1 Week 3

Date: 20th Jan 2023 @ 10:29am

What a chilly end to to the week!

Today, year 4 visited the River Medlock which flows through Phillips Park. This is a part of our CC learning, and we had a look to see if we could spot any meanders or pollution. We heard the water swaying and flowing, squirrels and birds in the trees, saw lots of rocks and trees!  The river was surrounded by trees and near many public spaces. It was quite icy too, so we were extra careful!

Spring blog 1

Date: 6th Jan 2023 @ 2:28pm

Happy new year!

What a busy week. Read and outline of our week below.

On January the 4th, when we arrived at school, we found a mysterious egg in the playground. We brought it upstairs to our classroom and decided what we should do about it. We decided that we would write a persuasive letter to Mrs Hughes to try and persuade her to either get rid of it, or let us keep it and see what might happen. We then explored the features of a persuasive letter, and focussed on the reason, audience and features. We then generated points for and against, before debating as a class. The jury decided that they would side with the points against keeping the egg, but we will see what Mrs Hughes says. You'll see a picture of the egg below.

Maths

In maths, we have been learning about fractions. We have looked at what a whole unit is, used a fraction wall to find equivalent unit and non-unit fractions. This is something we will continue next week.

Connected curriuculum

In our CC this week, we launched our unit by creating a rain dance, which is why it has rained so much this week - sorry! We have explored what a river is and the different features of it.

Check back next week for more fun-filled learning! Mysterious egg.jpg

R.E Visit

Date: 25th Nov 2022 @ 8:35pm

On Thursday, Year 4 visited the St Cross Church.

This linked to our R.E topic 'What is it like to be a Christian in Britain today?'

During our visit, we were able to explore many different areas of the Church. These included the Vestry, Ladies Chapel, Font and Sunday School area. Father Chris was able to teach us about the importance of the Church to Christians, whilst answering the hundreds of questions that we had.

Each child followed our school rules of being respectful, responsible and safe. They were brilliant ambassadors for our school!

Attached are some pictures of our morning there.

Super science

Date: 18th Nov 2022 @ 11:28am

For this week's science, we have been creating food chains. We looked at producers, consumers, prey and predators. We learnt that most food chains begin with a plant, which takes it energy from the Sun in a process called photosynthesis. We also learnt the animal which is at the end of the food chain (and is not eaten by anything else) is the predator. We learnt that prey can sometimes be a primary consumer, but a predator is the secondary consumer. This links with what we will be learning next week, which is all about food webs.

This has all been a part of our science unit on animals including humans and focussing on the digestive system.

Take a look at a some of the food chains that we made below...4LJ science.PNG

Week 2

Date: 11th Nov 2022 @ 3:26pm

What a week!

We have made so much progress in our swimming this week and even learned how to use back stroke and how to use 'frogs legs' to move in the water!

We have been using arrays to multiply and divide in maths this week, and applying our knowledge to answer depth 3 challenges - some have been tricky!

Because we will be visiting a church in the next few weeks we explored what happens in a church and also looked at the wesbite of St Cross church.

We did a lesson with Will from CCO this week and explored the playground using our orienteering and map skills.

We have been reading our class text this week and have reached chapter 9 in the text and are excited to see what happens to the characters next now that the earthquake has happened!

Check back next week for some pictures!

Freestyle Tricks

Celebrate me day!

Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 8:10am

What a fantastic day we had celebrating us!

The children came in wearing clothes which celebrated their culture, religion, heritage as well as things which represented them (favourite colour, their aspiration). Rumour has it there was a Manchester Bee floating around in 4CB...

We visited an assembly where we had visitors who used to attend our school, celebrating all that they have achieved since moving on from Ravensbury. It was fantastic to see so many members of our schoool community.

In the afternoon, Year 4 spent time reflecting on what makes them who they are today. This was reflected in some fantastic artwork that they created. This artwork will be displayed outside of our classrooms and will remind us every day how important it is to be individuals, and to celebrate who we are!

It was fantastic to see so many parents come and join us and celebrate our school community. Thank you parents.

We'll show the finished product soon!

Egg-cellent Experiments!

Date: 5th Oct 2022 @ 11:59am

Over the past week, year 4 have carried out a very interesting science experiment - all about tooth decay. As the surface of an egg shell is very similiar to the enamel on teeth, they chose four different liquids to submerge the eggs into.

We then observed the egg shells over a week, and studied what happened to the surface of each of them.

By Wednesday, the jugs were very smelly!

4LJ Blog 4

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 2:06pm

What another exciting week in year 4. The weather today is not fantastic, so we must remember our coats!

During our swimming lesson, lots of us no longer needed the noodles to support us, and at first this was quite scary, but we succeeded - we even jumped in to the pool! We've spent time this week sharing who we believes which members of the class deserve to be on outstanding at the end of each and every day, this is so that we all have an opinion that we know what outstanding behaviour looks like in year 4. Our CC focussed on the different Maya gods, of which there were hundreds! Writing this week focussed on using coordinating conjunctions to extend our sentences in our non-chronological reports, as we have finished writing our Maya myths!

We also explored when and how to use apostrophes to mark possession.  We have begun and observation over time to see the effects of sugar on teeth by using egg shells in a range of liquids. Next week, we start addition and subtraction in maths and will be writing our non-chronological reports!

4LJ Blog 3

Date: 26th Sep 2022 @ 3:02pm

What a week for sport! Considering there was only 4 school days, we squeezed lots in.

In our swimming lesson, some children went in to the big pool, also known as the deep end. We were so excited to achieve this, and we're sure that we will all do it at some point this year.

Sports day was great fun. We earned lots of point for our houses. So far, Earth house is in the lead, but there's still time to change that!

Reading this week focussed on sequencing the events of the Hero twins text and our writing focussed on writing our versions of the myth.

Spanish this week focussed on actions for sitting down, standing up and listening as well as some numbers!

This week we also visited the library with Mrs Thewlis, and discussed the different rules of how to act and behave in the library.

We focussed more on how to keep our teeth clean in Science, and how we should look after them!

Maths focussed on Roman Numerals to 100 and we learned that I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50 and C = 100.

Remember to wear your PE kits on Monday and only wear jewellery that you can take off.  Clubs start next week too!

Here we are already! The end of week 2.

What a fantastic we had during our swimming lesson, the children were all so brave! We learned how to float like a star in the pool. The water was cold at first but we soon got used to it. We learned to kick our legs in the pool whilst holding on to the wall.

In our Spanish lessons, we played a Spanish version of Simon say, where we had to listen to and follow instructions. Sentaos means sit down.

As part of our CC, we looked at important dates in Maya history and created a timeline.

We began writing our own version of the Maya myth (Hero Twins).

In science, we explored what a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore is and why their teeth can be different.

Maths this week focussed on larger numbers up to 10,000, comparing and partitioning them.

We learned how to use a search engine carefully and what a search engine is!

Next week, there is no school on Monday because of the Queen's funeral. Next Wednesday we have our second swimming lesson , (please arrived at 9am sharp). Next Friday is our sports day (Friday at 9.10am). Please come and watch us between 9.10am and 10.10am.

Have a great long weekend!
