Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 7

Date: 13th May 2020 @ 4:34pm

Well we have a response from Haya! Are you ready?

She has selected...

Examine the mirror

You warily walk towards the mirror noting as you get closer the sheer size of it. It has to be the largest mirror you’ve ever seen, twice your height and four times your width at least.

The ornate golden frame looks chipped and worn and you wipe the surface with your hand removing dust and cobwebs. Your reflection looks back at you eerily, then smiles.

Your reflection’s hand snakes out and pulls you closer to the mirror. You try to resist but your opposite is much stronger. It pulls you into the frame and you feel a sucking sensation as you are pulled into the mirror itself. A sudden snap cracks and then you are face to face with your reflection once more, only this time you have switched places.

You try to grab the mirror creature but your hand smacks solidly against the glass, you are trapped inside the mirror!

Your reflection smiles, waves and strolls away. You are stuck, forever!

ARRGGGHHH!! Nooo!

How spooky was that? It made a shiver go right down my spine just imagining that happening to me!

Not to worry we will go back to the hall and choose another path to follow to find the ruby heart! We are now left with two choices...

Open the door

Climb the stairs

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 19

Date: 13th May 2020 @ 10:18am

Good morning year 6, you are going to be on the edge of your seat sharing chapter 19 today!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=wReiNgu

Wasn't it exciting! The narrator really has shown how badly they want to get their letter to the Queen.

Questions

Why was it so busy at the palace when they arrived?

How were the crowd feeling? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Find and Copy two words on page 210 which suggests the policemen were approaching the narrator and standing over him.

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 7

Date: 13th May 2020 @ 9:38am

Good morning year 6. The sun is shining on us but definitely not on the Haunted House! I hope you are ready to climb the stairs and see what awaits us.

Here goes...

At the top of the cellar stairs is a trap door, you open it and climb through into a hall. It is gloomy and just as dusty as the cellar but not as musty.

The hallway is dim but the bright moonlight offers enough visibility. Thick cobwebs hang everywhere and the house is cold, really cold. You see a door to your right, a large dusty mirror to your left and a large spiral staircase. Do you:

Open the door

Climb the stairs

Examine the mirror

Well now there are 3 options to choose from!

Who will be the first to choose where we should go next? I can't wait to see what will happen next!

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 6

Date: 12th May 2020 @ 2:38pm

Well Maddison beat everyone to it once again! That's three times in a row-come on the rest of year 6. Maddison wants us to 'Open the Filthy Cupboard' so that is what we shall do.

You open the cupboard and peer inside, nothing but dust and large, thick cobwebs. You go to close it and see something glinting in the corner underneath a thick layer of grime.

You reach for it and pull free a small golden key. Happy with your find, you pocket it and climb the stairs to the house.

Climb stairs

Wow we have a key! Well done Maddison; a good choice.

Tomorrow we will begin with climbing the stairs!

Climate Change in Lockdown

Date: 12th May 2020 @ 11:22am

This week’s Connected Curriculum task is to research how these strange times are having an effect on reducing pollution in some of the world’s busiest cities.

Lockdowns around the world to slow the spread of coronavirus have had an unintended consequence …

In many cities the air has become cleaner as people stay at home and travel rates have reduced significantly.

Residents in some cities have also begun to notice animals turning up in strange places and at unusual times : has anybody seen the goats spotted in a town in Wales?

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/video/2020/mar/31/goats-take-over-empty-welsh-streets-llandudno-

coronavirus-lockdown-video?scrlybrkr=109769e5

Your challenge this week is to reseach and present in any way you wish: a mind-map, fact file, poster or ppt etc how pollution has reduced and resulted in changes to cities, water and adventuring animals in silent towns and cities.

How do you think people and cities could maintain some of these changes after lockdown ends to help prevent climate change?

I have also attached a wordsearch with useful vocabulary for you to use during this topic. You may also find it useful to go back to task 1 and have a look at Charlie's brilliant ppt!

SATs Week

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 10:02am

Dear Year 6,

At last it has arrived,
The 11th of May,
Your SATs have been cancelled,
At home we must stay.

The classrooms are empty,
The walls aren’t all bare,
The tests wont be given,
As we won’t be there.

No early SATs breakfasts,
No fears to help quell,
We’re still staying apart,
To keep us all well.

It feels a bit unreal,
It’s been such a strange term,
But SATs aren’t a measure,
Of all that you’ve learned.

Your jokes aren’t examined,
For creating, caring or exploring there’s no test,
There’s no measure for friendship,
At these, you’re the best.

But whether you’re happy, relieved or sad,
Try to remember all the fun you’ve had
So sit back, relax and enjoy the week to come,
Working through the blog, enjoying some sun.

Year six, you’re awesome, amazing, you’re great!
You've soared already, this is a chance to celebrate,
The skills you have, you’ve learnt and you’ve grown,
Whether in school, in class or at home.

Year 6 we’re so proud,
Of all you’ve achieved,
We know you’re amazing,
And in you, we believe.

Love,
The Year 6 Team

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 17

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 9:55am

Good morning year 6. This week the story starts to get very exciting and I know you're going to really enjoy it. Here is chapter 17 for you to join in with and follow.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=sjC1r2O

Questions

1. What was their Sunday adventure?

2. How did the children feel by Tuesday? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

3. On page 187, find and copy the word which means 'desperately'?

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 5

Date: 11th May 2020 @ 9:31am

Good morning year 6. We need your help to make the next step in the story today.

A reminder of the story so far...

Descending the steps is scary and dangerous as they are covered in moss and mould. They are slippery and you have to be careful as you make your way into the cold depths of the house.

Faint slivers of moonlight dance through the small doorway giving you a dim range of visibility. You look around and see a small cupboard, its door hanging off its rusty hinges.

A wooden stairway is in one of the corners probably leading up into the house.

Do you climb the stairs and leave the cellar

OR

Open the filthy cupboard?

Remember we are looking for the Ruby Heart!

What do you think might be in the cupboard?

What might we find up the stairs?

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 5

Date: 7th May 2020 @ 3:32pm

Well Maddison got to the answer first again! She has opted to go down into the cellar. Cross your fingers this ends well!

Here goes...

Open the filthy cupboard

Another choice!! What will YOU choose this time.  Remember we are on the hunt for a Ruby Heart so sometimes you have to take chances.

All will be revealed on Monday but whoever gets their choice in first, that's the one I will take.

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 4

Date: 7th May 2020 @ 10:01am

Ok year 6 were are round the back of the old house now so let's see where today's adventure takes us...

You continue to walk around the back squelching through the cold mud and then you see a small door next to an open window.

As you get nearer, the wind blasts through and catches the door, swinging it open. You peer inside and see that it leads down into a dismal and dank cellar. You don’t fancy the idea of descending into such filthy depths.

Do you:

Go down into the cellar

Climb through the window

So year 6 we have another choice to make! Who will be the first to answer and make the choice? You can respond with your choice either on Twitter or through our email...

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 16

Date: 7th May 2020 @ 9:49am

Good morning year 6. Another lovely day for you to enjoy. Maybe you could listen back to all the chapters on your headphones in the garden!

Here is chapter 16 for you and some questions to answer after.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=4WEHE5w

Chapter 16 Questions

On page 169 why is Michael worried about ‘The Greatest Plan in the World’?

On page 170 find and copy a word that means encouragingly?

On page 171, why couldn’t the narrator imagine meeting the queen?

Why did Ahmet get suspicious of his friends on page 172?

Why did they suggest the narrator wrote the letter to the Queen?

Do you think you will find out the name of the narrator by the end of the story?

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 3

Date: 6th May 2020 @ 9:36am

Well I cannot wait any longer so I am going to decide where we go next on our story adventure. We had these two choices in Part 2 of the adventure...

Do you want to investigate the source of the noise

Or

Continue to find a back door

I am quite a nosey person so I have an urge to investigate the source of the noise. Here we go..

You cautiously walk towards a large, dark bush to see what is causing all of the noise. The rustling is getting louder and then stops.

You strain to hear it when suddenly a powerful dog leaps out from the bush, its ferocious attack surprises you and knocks you to the ground. Its ravenous jaws dribble saliva all over your face and then before you have time to defend yourself it snaps its mouth shut!

Your adventure is over.

Oh! Oh dear!

At least we get more chances. Tomorrow we will see what will happens when we continue to find the back door instead. Come on year 6 I need your help with the choices, as you can see mine are not always the best!

VE day paper

Date: 6th May 2020 @ 9:23am

Good morning everyone,

I have found some lovely resources to use for your VE day challenge including some nice paper to present your work. We don’t have a printer in my house so my daughters have decided to make our own border paper.

They have decorated our windows and we are looking forward to having a living room picnic on Friday to celebrate VE day whilst staying safe at home- what are your plans?

Stay safe everyone

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 15

Date: 6th May 2020 @ 9:20am

Good morning year 6-another glorious sunny day for us to enjoy! Here is the next chapter of our story. I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am?  Today’s question is a prediction question to see if you can use what you have read and what you know about the characters already, to try and think what they might do next.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=uoc0lo8

Questions

What do you think they might be planning to do?

Why would it be dangerous?

Why would it get them into trouble?

VE day photographs

Date: 5th May 2020 @ 10:03am

Good morning everyone,

Do you remember our visit to the Imperial War Museum? Well they have a brilliant website full of photographs of VE day!  I have been finding out lots about VE day this week with my little girls, who are only in Year 3 so they really don’t know as much about WWII as you all do! We have really enjoyed looking at old photos of the V.E. day celebrations- Who were the women in Trafalgar Square fountains on V.E. day? Click below to see if historians ever found out! I just keep imagining how relieved and happy the people must have been after 6 long years of war! I have found 6 weeks of lockdown tough at times!

https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/10-photos-of-ve-day-celebrations

What fantastic first hand sources they make of this time. Can you imagine what the people are thinking using your knowledge of this period? Perhaps these could help you with your VE day challenge this week? You could imagine interviewing some of these people or writing their diary or letter home. Enjoy investigating!

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 14

V.E. day Challenge

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 4:39pm

 Good afternoon Year 6,

For this week's Connected Curriculum task we will be going back to 1945 again! This week would have been a special celebration in school as Friday 8th May had been made into a Bank Holiday to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day. As we have spent much of our time finding out about WWII this year, I thought it would be fun to celebrate this week with a special V.E. Day challenge.

Click the link below for more information and good luck! Remember to send in your competition entries and email or tweet us too!

Good afternoon year 6. Here is Chapter 13 for you to join in with.

Don't forget to summarise the chapter in ONLY 3 sentences and predict what the children might plan to do to help Ahmet.

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 2

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 3:17pm

Well Maddison was the first to respond to we are heading round the back.

You walk around the back, careful not to step into the stinking puddles that seem to be everywhere. It is darker round the back as the house’s tall spires block out the bright moonlight. You hear a rustle and spin on your heel, nothing.

You walk on but hear the rustling again. This is doing nothing for your nerves. You realise you are trembling before you have even entered the house.

Do you want to investigate the source of the noise

Or

Continue to find a back door?

Another decision to make...

Who will be the first to answer?

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 1

The House on Haunted Hill

An Adventure

By B.G. Waldram

You shake your head as you march up the creepy hill.

How did you get yourself into this mess? The wind whips up and blows fiercely at you as if trying to keep you away from reaching your destination. You shiver and pull your coat up around your neck, desperately trying to keep the cruel wind out. You tell yourself that the shivers down your spine and the goose bumps that have popped out all over your body is due to the cold but deep down you know it’s because the house is now in sight.

The colossal gates stand guard and the house sits behind them all sinister and spooky. You ask yourself again why you were foolish to take up the dare: ‘Who is brave enough to enter the Midnight Mansion and retrieve the Ruby Heart?’

Are you brave enough to enter this adventure with me?

You smile to yourself as you recall the moment when you stood up and declared that you were worthy of the challenge.

All the others were amazed at your bravery. Several of them cheered joyfully, happy that they weren’t attempting the foolish challenge. Several girls came and kissed you on the cheek whilst the boys clapped your back heartily. There was no way of backing out now.

Hours later, you had left the warmth of your friends behind and you are now alone, trudging towards the mansion.

You arrive at the gates and push them open; they creak noisily as if crying out to all the ghosts of the night. You stand in front of the massive house, staring at the uninviting front door. Will you try it or do you want to go around the back?

Front door                                                                                    Around the back

The first to answer and choose either the front door or to go around the back of the house will decide our fate!

The Year 6 Team

Sentence of The Day

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:02am

Good morning year 6! Can you believe it is Friday already? Today’s sentence of the day is a short piece of dialogue to show characterisation and how to organise speech.

“I really do’nt like the look of this place Tom,” whispered Ahmet.   That strange symbol reminds of something I’ve seen before and it is giving me a bad feeling about this place.”

“Oh stop being a scaredy-cat as usual Ahmet; honestly we will be in and out as quick as a flash, once we get proof that we went in all of the rooms. Come on!” insisted Tom.

Can you find the two punctuation errors. One is a piece of punctuation that is in the wrong place and the other is a missing piece of speech punctuation.

I would also like you to look at the word ‘bad’ and see if you can use an improved word which still fits in with the sentence.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Write the next DAD sentences as they enter the house.

Describe what they see as soon as they enter.

Explain an action-how or what do the characters do?

Dialogue- What do they say to one another?

CC vocabulary

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 3:51pm

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how you are getting along with the CC activity for this week. Look back through the blog if you missed it. Miss Thornton and I are completing a vocabulary course online and one of our tasks this week is to write up what we have understood so far and to use as many key words as possible… so we are having a little competition!  Here is a little challenge for you too… how many of the words below you can include in your writing – remember you can present your writing as you wish or maybe you could make a GLOSSARY of this key vocabulary instead.
