Snow Day Science

Date: 16th Jan 2024 @ 2:13pm

We have been learning about Winter in Nursery. We've been finding frozen blocks of ice all over our provision. Yesterday we received a letter from some penguins, asking us to help them get free from the ice that they were trapped in. We planned experiments in our key worker groups to work out how to free them. This morning there was snow all over the outdoor area but no trapped penguins. This afternoon we found the penguins frozen in ice outside, next to our water tray, so we sprung into action!

Mrs Ganners group poured warm water on the penguins and it melted the ice.

Mrs Blakeley's group banged the ice with a hammer to break the penguins free.

Mrs Wyment's group got a bucket and put in some warm and cold water. After that, they put the penguins inside the bucket and waited.

Ms Marley's group put the penguins in a tray and put it outside and waited for the sun to come out.

We hope you enjoy looking at the photos of our learning as much as we enjoyed setting the penguins free!

Winter is here!

Date: 5th Jan 2024 @ 5:10pm

We have had a lovely first few days back in Nursery. On Wednesday, we went into our Nursery garden to look for signs of winter using our senses. The children noticed that the weather was colder and there were no leaves on the trees. When we came back inside we talked about how we can keep ourselves warm. These are some of the responses from the children.

“We can rub our hands”

“stamp our feet”

“put a blanket on”

“wear our hat”

“put our gloves on”

As part of our ‘Friday Challenges’, we have been using our senses to explore the new winter resources in the classroom. We also used our fingers to roll small, medium and larged sized balls using the playdough to make snowmen! Finally, we used our subitising skills to subitise to 3 (when we are able to look at a small group of objects and realise how many there are without counting).

Please take a look at all the fun we have been having in the photos below!

Diwali Day

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 3:02pm

Today we have taken part in Diwali Day, learning all about how Hindu people, and some Sikh people, celebrate Diwali.

We read books, watched videos, learned how to dance, wore traditional clothes and tried to create Rangoli patterns with sand. It was very tricky to sprinkle just a little bit of sand.

As we celebrated, the children talked about their learning "demon king"

                                                                                             "They have lot's of food"

                                                                                              "Candles light up"

"They go to the temple and fireworks come"

                                                                                                "Lights!"

                                                                                                 "People pray"

If you want to celebrate Diwali at home why don't you join in dancing with us. We think you'll agree that we have some amazing moves!

Painting Poppies

Date: 10th Nov 2023 @ 4:44pm

To continue our learning about poppies, this afternoon some children followed Steps to Success to create a painted poppy or a craft poppy. These were our choice challenges. Not everybody chose to make one to support autonomy over our learning. Some children  created their own challenge and used the mark making materials to draw their own poppy.
The teachers said we had created some beautiful artwork.
Can you complete some of our Friday Challenges at home?

Remembrance Day

Date: 10th Nov 2023 @ 11:48am

This morning we learned about why we use the poppy as a symbol for Remembrance Sunday and what this day is. The children were facinated by the video we watched. They cheered loudly when the poppies started to grow again after the war. This video is a great way of talking about Remembrance Sunday with young children. Would you like to watch it too?

Our faces reflected the different emotions we felt as we watched. The children were so excited when the poppies started growing they cheered.

"Make it go away," said one child during the war scenes. "A shining light!" excalimed another as the darkness parted. "It's growing up," one child told us as the poppies grew in the field

Bonfire Night Fun

Date: 10th Nov 2023 @ 11:41am

We really enjoyed learning about bonfire night, naming different types of fireworks, learning a new song and creating artwork to put in our learning books. Do you know a song about fireworks? this is the one we learned

Let’s Meet Pete!

Date: 1st Nov 2023 @ 2:56pm

Yesterday we found some paw prints on our Literacy book stand. We thought it was odd because there wasn't a book! We followed the paw prints to a basket that was left in the shared area. There was a cat, a pair of shoes, a guitar and a pair of cool sunglasses. Who sent them? It was a mystery until today, when we found a brand new book. We learned all about Pete the Cat and how much he loved his white shoes. It was a fun story, he kept stepping in things and it changed the colour of his shoes. Do you know how he made them white again?
Here's a link to the story if you want to find out

Verb Vocabulary

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 7:45pm

This week we have been learning lots of new words to describe how animals move in the story 'Monkey and Me'. Verbs are words which describe what a character is doing.
Here are the words we know now:

flap waddle sway swing jump

Can you guess which animals move in this way by looking at these photos?
If you need some help CLICK HERE to listen to the story

Sports Day Fun

Date: 11th Oct 2023 @ 7:11pm

We were blown away with the support we received last Friday for our 'Sports Day Meet & Greet'. The children were amazing, as always, and there were so many positive comments from the adults who joined us. We're so happy you can see the amount of progress the children have made settling in at Ravensbury.
Each key worker group rotated around the activities and had lots of fun moving, dancing, singing, playing games and making hand prints.
Here are some of the photos 😃

Sports Day Reminder

Date: 5th Oct 2023 @ 7:56pm

We're very excited for you to join us at the Nursery Sports Day Meet and Greet tomorrow.

Now your child has settled into school, we'd like to share some activities with you to celebrate our Connected Curriculum 'Magical Me' learning.

Come in to school and stay with us after the gathering song. After the register we will move around the indoor and outdoor space activities in keyworker groups.

  1. Hand prints - choose paint that matches your child's skin tone, dip one hand in it and rub both hands together. Print both hands on the paper and then wash them.

  2. Dance and Sing - Move to some of our favourite action songs in front of the Interactive Whiteboard.

  3. The Stop/Go game - Move around the track in your vehicle making sounds and responding to the stop/go sign.

  4. Obstacle Course - Move over, under, around and through the obstacles set up on the playground markings.

See you all very soon 😃

Who would like to be a doctor or nurse or lollipop person?

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 9:02pm

As we continue to learn about 'People Who Help Us', we have been dressing up and caring for our friends.

Who would you like to pretend to be?

Patterns Everywhere!

Date: 4th Oct 2023 @ 8:47pm

This week, in Maths, we have been learning to name and find patterns in the environment. First we played a game with the Stepping Stones, naming the patterns. Then we hunted for patterns in our classroom. Once we'd found a patterned object we used the sentence stem, "I can see a ..."

Practice saying these sentences then see if you can find the photo of that object.

"I can see a stripy chair"

"I can see a spotty toy"

"I can see a spotty die"

Our new pattern vocabulary is spotty, checked, stripy, swirly, plain and zig zag.

Send photos of the patterns you find in your house to

Who helps us stay safe?

Date: 1st Oct 2023 @ 11:56am

This week we learned about two of the emergency services that help us stay safe. First we watched Fireman Sam and then we watched Paw Patrol to find out about uniforms, equipment and what firefighters and police officers do to keep us safe.
Here are some photos of us learning in the environment and pretending to be these characters.

Transient Art Faces

Date: 24th Sep 2023 @ 10:09am

Our Magical Me learning has seen us exploring our magical faces further this week. Last week we drew our faces following Steps to Success (S2S) and this week we used the resources in our Families themed area to create 3D art.
Can you guess who these children are?

What a fabulous settling in period we have had

Date: 20th Sep 2023 @ 8:42pm

We'd just like to say thank you to all of the parents and carers who have brought their fabulous children to our Nursery. They are a real credit to you and we are amazed at how quickly they have settled into life at Ravensbury.
Each week we will put up photos and videos of our learning so make sure you check in regularly.

Look Who

Date: 19th Jul 2023 @ 1:40pm

Today was a very special day for us in Nursery. We designed and created a wedding for the lovely Miss Conway. She's been so busy looking after us at school that she forgot to organise her own wedding!

We created some dress designs and made her favourite one. One of the children made a tiara, a group of children threaded some jewels onto a necklace and we made a bouquet for her to use.

Miss Conway then practised walking down the aisle and she threw her bouquet to her friend Miss G. We can't wait to see her walk down the aisle next.

Have a lovely wedding day Miss Conway (soon to be Mrs Whyment). We can't wait to see the pictures.

Sunny Days

Date: 9th Jun 2023 @ 8:44pm

We've had some beautiful weather this week. We've played outdoors and had an amazing time in Nursery. Our new learning asks the question, "Where will I go and how will I get there?" Our imagination took us to a magical land one afternoon.

"If we fly to fairytale land we can see a dragon."

"The dragon is smashing the castle!"

"This is me with my Mummy in the sun."

"Where's number 6 gone? I only have 1,2,3,4,5. This one is number 9. Look at my dinosaurs on the train."

Shape Challenge

Date: 26th May 2023 @ 2:35pm

Today one of our challenges was to complete the shape challenge. Look at how speedy these children were. Do you think that if you practice you'll be able to complete the game in less than a minute?

The Plants Dance

Date: 28th Apr 2023 @ 3:01pm

This week in P.E, Nursery have been learning a special dance! We started by being a bean, making roots and popping out of the dirt! Next we stretched up to the sky, waved our leaves in the breeze and smiled at the sun. Could you have a try at home?

Shopping for Seeds

Date: 21st Apr 2023 @ 11:15am

This weekend we have asked our teachers to go shopping so we can plant some sunflowers ?.

We are learning about how plants grow so we want to see what happens when we plant sunflower seeds.
We've already learned about how beanstalks grow by reading a fab story called Jasper's Beanstalk. Can you work out how to plant a seed by looking at our retell?

Eid Mubarak

Date: 21st Apr 2023 @ 10:16am

Some of our friends didn't come in to school today because they were celebrating Eid at home with their family and friends. We watched a video to learn about how Muslim people celebrate Eid.
We loved looking at the beautiful clothes the family wore and we watched them worship at their Mosque. Then the family gave each other presents. We realised that this is just like when we celebrate with our families!
Here are the videos we watched. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did. Happy Eid everybody.

Pigeon Nest

Date: 17th Apr 2023 @ 2:51pm

A pigeon has been very busy building her nest under the Nursery Garden canopy over the Easter Holidays. Nursery spotted her this morning as she sat quietly in her nest. We have been thinking carefully about how we can help to keep the pigeon calm and we have decided to be extra quiet when we are playing out in our garden.

Can you spot the pigeon on her nest?

Celebrating Easter

Date: 29th Mar 2023 @ 1:49pm

This week in class we have been learning about Easter. We have watched videos to see how Toby celebrates Easter. Toby is a Christian and he goes to church to learn about Jesus.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lets-celebrate-easter?scrlybrkr=d949cda3

We created Easter crowns to wear at the Easter Parade (some of us made our own Easter bonnets at home too). We drew shapes and patterns in different sizes and colours onto large oval egg shapes. We also made an Easter picture of a bunny in a garden. This afternoon we followed the clues and found some treasure! A huge basket full of chocolate eggs for the children.

Duck, duck, duck, duck, duckling ?

Date: 22nd Mar 2023 @ 9:16pm

You wouldn't believe who our surprise visitors to class are (maybe the title of this blog post has given away the surprise).

5 little eggs arrived on Monday and by Wednesday 4 of them had hatched. We looked at the equipment that came with the eggs and we watched closely as they hatched. We have our own little small world farm area set up to make them feel at home and we are going to take care of them so they don't miss their Mummy!
