Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be due back the following Friday. There will be one numeracy task and one writing task plus 20 spellings to learn. If you can, try to make learning the spellings part of your daily routine. Try recalling them whilst walking to school, whilst preparing breakfast or even whilst in the bath! Try to take as many opportunities to read as possible – it isn’t just the reading books that school send home that are important. Try to read everything, everywhere you go! You will find leaflets and brochures, adverts and even the information on the back of cereal boxes easy to read – especially if you keep on practising! Read road signs on car journeys and timetables at bus stations. Read as much as you can, as often as you can. Please also remeber to practice your times tables every day. You need to have learnt all your times tables facts by the end of year 4!
This year, the children have been supplied with reading journals. These are very important and need to be kept safe inside the book bag. They must be filled in each time your child reads their colour coded reading book, which they should be bringing home every single day. Please try to make sure that as well as the reading mentioned above, children also read their colour coded reading book for 15 minutes every day. A good reading routine will improve your child’s fluency in reading. As usual, there will be fantastic rewards for reading every evening and children who regularly read each night will be in with the chance of winning some of our reading prizes!
At Ravensbury, we are striving to improve the reading fluency of our pupils. Fluency means that children can read words accurately, without many errors, and they should try to find a comfortable but pacey speed at which to read. We also encourage good expression whilst reading. Children should start to recognise that they should read with different expressions around different punctuation – such as question marks and exclamation marks. We might send home an additional text for children to read a few times, in order to improve the speed at which they can read. You can help them by timing them for 1 minute and then asking them to circle the word they got up to! The next time, they should aim to get a little further on in the text as they will become more familiar with the words.
