Wellbeing challenge number 11

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 11:16am

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend and made the most of the lovely warm weather (I think it might be the last hot sun for a while although it seems nice so far this morning!)

Today's challenge is to do something that I have just discovered myself although my husband has been nagging me to do it for a while - Listen to a podcast.

A podcast is a bit like a radio show that you can download to your tablet, phone or laptop and listen to either while you relax or while you go for a walk. Some include music, some are educational, some entertain you and some are just good for helping you relax. You can listen to them with others or by yourself if you need a bit of me time.

This weekend I have been listening to one called Sounds of the 90s by Fearne Cotton that includes lot of music from the 90s as well as intervews with 90s pop stars. I've been listening to it while I go on my hour long walks every day and I think some of the teachers may also enjoy it!

Here are some podcasts I've found that I think you might all like, the links are under each description:

But Why: A pocast for curious kids
A podcast answering lots of questions that you may find interesting!

With wacky episode titles such as "What if Legos were alive?" and "What if sharks had legs?," this series takes ridiculous "what if" questions submitted by young listeners and turns them into a new story every two weeks.http://www.whatifworldpodcast.com/

Noodle Loaf
A delightful offering from a music education specialist and his co-host daughter will get kids of all ages singing, rhyming, moving, and engaging in all kinds of musical games. The segments, games, and songs are so silly and upbeat that the whole family will enjoy participating. Little listeners can even add their voice to the theme song in the podcast's electronically compiled kid's choir!

We have an exciting challenge for you this week....

All the staff in school have made a little video where we are using our hands/fingers to make a heart shape to show how much we are missing you all.heart The video is posted on Twitter but in case you haven't managed to see it I have attached it to this blog. I have also attached a photo of all the EYFS staff making a heart shape to give you ideas.

Your challenge is to create a heart shape using your hands/fingers and send us a photo via the email address:  receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Please note that we will be posting these photos on the class blog pages online and on our school Twitter account, so please make sure that you are happy for us to post your photo on these online platforms before sending it to us.

Good Morning Nursery and Reception,

We just wanted to show you a new section on our website...If you go to the home page at the top you will notice a tab called Covid 19. You can see it in this image:

When you hover over the top of the tab you will see different sections called:

Click on the section called Home Learning Nursery and Reception. This will take you to a part of the website where it will give you lots of information about how you can support your child at home in these year groups. As you scroll down this section you will find the nursery and reception email addresses so that you can continue to send in your photos and work to your child's class teacher.

At the bottom of this section you will see images like this:

When you click on a image it will take you to that website where you can play games and find other activities to keep your children busy during this time of home learning.

There is a new website called 'Oak National Academy' which is made up of about 40 teachers teaching lessons in various areas. Worm Hotel

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 8:25am

Good Morning Reception!

Whilst we are learning about minibeasts, I thought it would be a great idea to build our wriggly friends a WORM HOTEL!

You will need:

Large glass jar

Sand

Potting soil

Dark paper

Sellotape

3-4 big healthy earthworms

Water

Method:

1. With an adult create a layer effect in the jar, using sand and soil.

2. Start by pouring about 1 inch of sand into the bottom of the jar.

3. Then alternate between 1 inch layers of sand and soil until the layers reach the top of the jar.

4. Pour some water on top of the layers and then put the earthworms on top.

5. The earthworms should start to burrow downwards straight away.

6. To keep the outside of the jar dark,  stick your dark paper around the outside of the jar.

7. Leave the top off the jar so that the worms can get some air.

8. Leave the jar to 3-4 days then pull the paper off.

Have the worms moved through the jar?

Can you still see layers of soil and sand?

As the worms have travelled, they have mixed all of the layers together!

Have fun! I cannot wait to see your creations! The worms will love them!

Monday Maths - Halving

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 8:14am

Good Morning Reception!

I hope you have had a lovely weekend and had lots of fun enjoying the warm weather!

Who is ready for some Monday Maths??

Let’s begin with our maths warm up songs….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc&t=3s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA

Now that we are all warmed up for our maths learning, let's have a go at the starter questions below.. (If you completed the doubling activities on Thursday you should be an expert at working out the first question!)

Well done!

Today we are going to focus our learning on HALVING and SHARING.

Halving is when we share quantities into two equal groups! We use the words ‘fair’ and ‘not fair’ to work out if our quantities have been shared equally.

Take a look at the ‘Show Me’ video below to help you understand halving a little bit better!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=LGWMJXc

With your adult at home, can you work out how to help Jenny and Penny half the pears so that it is fair?

There are also links to other halving challenges below for you to take part in at home (a lot of them involve food – yum!!)

Have fun and don’t forget to send in pictures of your learning at receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Monday 27th April Phonics

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 8:09am

Good Morning Reception!!

Let us start by singing our phonics song:

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zKr44iBFT0

Today I want you to continue looking at the Phase 3 sounds and think about diagraphs. Remember a diagraph has 2 letters and 1 sound… The diagraphs that we are going to look at this week are:

Listen to this show me where I am explaining how to read words with our focus diagraphs qu  and ch:

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=3M864Ey

Today let us concentrate on the diagraphs qu and ch. Watch the video below showing you how to say the diagraph qu:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nawc37HyTQ

Now watch the Jack Hartman song all about the diagraph ch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWg2uzAuSe4

Can you read the following words with the digraphs qu and ch?

Now play the game quick write. Your grown up will choose a word and say it, you must have a go at writing it. Mrs Iqbal and Mrs Cooper’s phonic groups pick two qu and two ch words and write some super sentences.

Extra challenges, Play one of the games below:

Buried Treasure: Click on Phase 3 and choose either the diagraph qu or ch. You must read the word and decide if it is real or fake.

https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/buried-treasure

Dragons’ Den: Click on Phase 3 and choose either the diagraph qu or ch. You must read the word and decide if it is real or fake.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Monday 27th April Reading

Date: 27th Apr 2020 @ 8:01am

Good Morning Reception!!

This week we are going to continue looking at the text ‘Mad about Minibeasts.’ Start by listening to the story again and remembering all the minibeasts that you have learnt about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rDQN8I7RkY

Now can you tell your grown up all the minibeasts that you saw in the book…How many can you tell your grown up in a minute…? Time yourself!!!

Today there are two reading  challenges depending on which Phonic group you are in. Make sure you click and find the correct reading challenge for your phonic group.

Mrs Iqbal and Mrs Cooper’s phonic groups your reading challenge is to read the sentences on the cards. Do not scroll down quickly as they is a picture. You must read the sentence twice as shown on the card and then draw a picture of what you have read. This will check if you have understood what you have read. Check your picture by scrolling down to see the picture on the card, did you draw a similar picture…?

Miss William and Miss Cogger’s phonic groups your reading challenge is to read the words and try to draw the minibeast animal.

You can find the reading challenges attached to this blog at the bottom. As an extra challenge I have also attached some minibeast action reading cards. Why not read the cards with a grown up and do the minibeast actions...? You may want to move to some music...

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

We have listened to the text 'Mad about Minibeasts,' you have been on a minibeast hunt, you have created some minibeasts using natural things from your garden and learnt about the different parts of a minibeasts body.

Using the animals from the text 'Mad about Minibeasts' we want you to pick your favourite insect and make a model using craft ideas or playdough. Look at the challenge sheet attached to this blog for more information. We have also attached the playdough recipe that was in your home learning packs. You may want to use playdough that you may already have.

Wellbeing challenge number 9

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 11:07am

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is finding ways to enjoy this amazing weather, I don't think we've ever had such a nice April before!

So today's wellbeing challenge is another way to make the most of the weather and get out in your gardens and do some gardening!

Here are some nice ideas for things to do that you don't really need many resources for: https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/10-gardening-projects-for-kids/

I bet you'll already have a lot of the things in your house or garden or you could collect some of them like twigs etc while out on a walk (make sure you wash your hands after if you do that!)  My favourite is the fairy garden.

Alternatively you could plant some seeds from something that you've just eatedn such as tomato seeds.

If you don't have a garden then why not design and draw your own garden (or fairy garden!) instead? You could maybe try and re-create it when you're older and have your own garden!

I have a balcony rather than a garden and had never done any gardening until a few weeks ago but below are a couple of pictures of the things I've planted! I'm watering them every day and the sun is making most of them grow nice and tall.

Have fun and remember to let us know what you've done!

Thursday Maths - Doubling

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 8:26am

Good Morning Reception.

Today in our maths learning, we are going to be focusing on DOUBLING.

We haven’t introduced doubling in class yet and it is a little bit of a tricky concept!!

Lets begin by clicking on the links below to listen to some doubling songs and videos!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jOzhiACB68

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-KTHfrFit0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bot83VxMLqM

Double means ‘twice as many.’ When we double a number, we add the same number to itself e.g 1 + 1 = 2.

You can work this out in many different ways, using different resources at home to help you!

You could make a ‘doubling machine’ using an old cereal box/shoe box and two used kitchen roll tubes! Jazz it up with some paint and cut out an insert at the bottom! Once you have made your doubling machine, you could use pom-poms or balls to go into the tubes! For example, if you place one pom-pom in the first tube, double it by placing another pom-pom in the second.. at the bottom of your doubling machine, you should be left with your doubled pom-poms! How many do you have altogether now? Ta-da you have worked out a double!

Double ladybirds and butterflies by using paint and half a folded piece of paper! Make an outline of a ladybird/butterfly and paint on some spots! Fold the paper together and you should have doubled your spots! How many do you have now?

Use a mirror to support your working out of doubles by placing a number of items in front of your mirror! When you look in the mirror… you should have twice as many items! Can you double your items this way?

Whilst you are completing these activities, remember to say your double as you create/build them e.g 2 add 2 equals 4.

Have fun and don’t forget to send in some pictures of the doubles you have made to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.machester.sch.uk! I can’t wait to see them!

Below I have also attached links for some extra doubling worksheets and challenges!

Thursday 23rd April Reading

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 8:11am

Good Morning Reception!

Today I want you to go on a reading hunt. I have saved some of the pages from our story ‘Mad about Minibeasts.’ You can find them attached to this blog. Can you go on a sound hunt? Your grown up will ask you to find a sound and then you must point to it on the page. Use the Phase 2 and 3 sound mats to help you.

Next can you go on a tricky word hunt. Your grown up will ask you to find a tricky word from Phase 2 or 3 and you must find it on that page from the book. Grown ups make sure the tricky word that you say is on the page!! Have the Phase 2 and 3 tricky word mats from your pack in front of you to remind you.

Check out the videos of Adam showing you how to play the sound/tricky word hunt.

Extra challenge – I have attached some stories with the Phase 3 sounds that we have concentrated on this week. Remember the sounds were j, v, w, x, z, and zz. Can you pick a story and see if you can read it confidently? How many stories will you be able to read…?

Good Luck!!!

Do not forget to send an email with your pictures and writing!!

Thursday 23rd April Phonics

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 8:09am

Good Morning Reception!!

Let us start by getting active with the new alphabet song I showed you yesterday:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVd5R-z5RbQ

Now try listening and joining in with these songs by Jack Hartman:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59u6KaluscI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwOQvh_mJ4w

Today I want you to continue looking at the Phase 3 sounds from this week and use the Phase 2 sounds confidently in your reading and writing.

Start by playing quick write. Your grown up will say one of the words below and you must write it for them thinking about your segmenting, blending and letter formation.

well

tell

zip

cobweb

fast

Jack

way

box

tick

visit

If you have the words that you wrote on scraps of paper from this week, dig them out because today I want you to play ‘cross my river.’ If you can remember how to play this game tell your grown up now. However, if you have forgotten grown ups this is what you must do…

Have a piece of material that is the ‘river’ and place it in the middle of the room or you could do it outside. You may want to use fabric, paper, or anything that you have that can become a river shape. Ask your child to pick a word card and say to them ‘If your work has the sound v, x, y, j, z, zz you may cross my river.’ Focus on the Phase 3 sounds that we have practised this week. How many times will you be able to cross the river...?

Now look at the pictures below that begin with one of the Phase 3 sounds that we have focussed on this week. Pick 3 pictures and write me some super sentences.

jigsaw     wizard      axe        yellow     zebra      buzz

As a extra challenge, can you think of other things that begin with the sounds above? Use those words and write some super sentences.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Wellbeing challenge number 8

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 11:30am

Good morning, Happy Wednesday everyone! I can't believe it's already the middle of the week.

Since we have such lovely weather today (and for most of the week!) my challenge for you today is to get outside and enjoy the sun and see what you can see!

Some of you may be lucky enough to have a garden and if you do then you can do my challenge from there but a walk would be even better and then you can be more active too. Yesterday I went for a lovely walk to Philips Park as I'm lucky enough to only live a 20 minute walk away, see some of my pictures below.

While you're out either in your garden or your walk, have a spring scavenger hunt to see what you can see. Why not get an adult to take a picture of the list on their phones so you can take it with you and see what you can tick off? Or maybe write them on a piece of paper and take it with you so you can tick off the items as you go!

On my walk I saw grass, bird nests, yellow flowers, clouds, worms, sticks, green leaves, dandelions and some beautiful blossom trees too. I didn't see any bunnies unfortnatey but I did see some cute little squirrels!

Make sure you e-mail your class e-mail addresses to let us know what you found and maybe even some photos too.

Mrs Glover

Here are some pictures of my walk:

Past challenges

Thanks to Mrs Iqbal's son, Adam for his picture of his happy place.

And also to Tomasz in Reception who also sent his picture. They both look lovely and very cosy!

Nature Art Insects

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 8:46am

Good Morning Reception!

Whilst it’s going to be another beautiful sunny day, why don’t we go outside at make some nature insect pictures??

All you need to do is collect some leaves and turn them into your favourite minibeasts! You can stick your leaf onto card or paper, draw on some antennae’s and wings and turn them in to super wriggly insects!

See how many different minibeasts you can create!

Take a look at the pictures below to help you with your art learning!

I can't wait to see pictures of your creations!

Wednesday - Maths Partitioning

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 8:36am

Good Morning Reception!

Let’s begin our maths learning with some number counting songs…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgLtF3PMOc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA

Here are some warm up questions to get your brains ticking!

Can you work out these 3 questions?

Today we are going to focus on Addition and Subtraction using part-part whole models!

We have used part-part whole models lots in class, we use them to partition our numbers so that we can clearly see the two parts that are equal to the whole number! This helps us to with our addition and subtraction skills!

To have a go yourselves at tackling some part-part whole models to 10 click on the link below! :)

Wednesday 22nd April Writing

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 8:02am

Good Morning Reception!

This week so far you have listened to the new text called ‘Mad about Minibeasts’ and you have started to label and remember the minibeast names. If you want to listen to the text again use the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rDQN8I7RkY

Today I want you to start by finding the PowerPoint called ‘Minibeast parts.’ Your grown up will help you to find it on this blog. We are going to learn about the different parts of a minibeast or insect. Our body parts are called names like head, shoulders, knees, and toes but on an insect/minibeast the different parts have unusual names. You may want to start by singing 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes...' Can you sing the part where we miss out the words 'head, shoulders, knees and toes...'?

Look through the information in the PowerPoint with your grown up. Try to remember the names of the different parts of a minibeast.

Now find the activity called label the parts of a butterfly. Your challenge is to use the words at the side of the picture and try to label the words on the picture in the right places. When you have finished look at the second page where it will give you the answers. Only look at the second page when you have finished…

Extra challenge – Can you draw another minibeast from the text and try to label the different parts using the words from the butterfly picture. All minibeasts usually have the same names of the different parts of the body.

Don't forget to send an email with your pictures and writing! receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Wednesday 22nd April Phonics

Date: 22nd Apr 2020 @ 7:57am

Good Morning Reception!!

Start by looking at the Phase 2/3 tricky words. Can you read them as fast/slow/in a witchy voice/in a monster voice or a deep voice? May be a grown up can time how long it took you to read the words.

Play splat the tricky word. Pick 6 tricky words and write them on pieces of paper. Spread the words out in your room or do it outside, then choose a soft cuddly toy. Your grown will say a tricky word and see if you can splat it with your soft cuddly toy.

Get active by doing the actions to this new alphabet song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVd5R-z5RbQ

Today I want you to continue looking at the Phase 3 sounds from yesterday and use the Phase 2 sounds confidently in your reading.

You are going to play a game called ‘Musical Read.’ Remember we have done this in class. Look at the sentences below and write them out on scraps of paper. Put the sentences in the middle of the room or outside in your garden. Play your favourite song and have a dance. When the music stops choose a sentence to read to your grown up. Continue playing until you have read all the sentences. How many will you be able to read…?

Jack went up the hill to get some water.

Jill fell down the hill and hurt her hand.

The dog can wag his tail fast.

She will do her zip on her coat.

I saw a spider on a cobweb.

We will visit the shop and get some sweets.

The bee can buzz a lot.

I have six shells in my hand.

Extra challenge – Can you read the sentences about the minibeasts and match them to the correct picture? You will find the sentences and pictures attached to this blog.

Don’t forget to send in your photos/work to receptionhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Wellbeing challenge number 7

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 10:32am

Hello and welcome back after the Easter holidays, I hope everyone had a good Easter! My husband bought me a delicious unicorn Easter Egg although I haven't finished it yet!

Today's wellbeing challenge is to design your own Happy Place. Here is an online game where you can build your own virtual happy place by just dragging and dropping objects into your room.

https://www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/games/build-your-happy-place/

You even get to choose your own wallpaper! Or if you don't fancy that, why not draw and colour a picture of your happy place? Or you could even do both!

Here's a picture of the room that I built, I wish could build a real room like it!

Please send any pictures of your happy place rooms to your home learning e-mail addresses, I'd love to see them.
