Year 6DL: Blog items

21.04.2020

Date: 21st Apr 2020 @ 9:06am

Good morning Year 6,

Another Sunny day in Manchester, how fantastic - I hope you are all managing to get outside to enjoy it, don't forget to take lots of little breaks throughout the day!

Today I am going to try and bake something for my sister and my housemate (wish me luck, I forgot to add baking powder to my last cake and it came out flat!) Has anyone else managed to do any cooking? I know Charlie has, his pizzas looked great! I'd love to see anything you've made.

Maths

You should still have a fluent in 5 paper left for this week - from next week I'll be putting them on here daily as a warm-up activity so make sure you check.

Today we are carrying on with place value.

1. Start with this game - can you make the mystery numbers by putting the digits in the correct columns?
http://flash.topmarks.co.uk/3438

2. More negative number practise!

Today we are adding and subtracting negative numbers - watch this video first to recap:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVvvUiExjes
Have a look at the worksheet I have attached - don't forget to use a numberline to help you if you find it tricky. You can either draw one or use this interactive one: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/450/ITP-Number-Line

Good luck - I will post the answers here later!

Have a lovely day,
Miss Kenwell

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 11:31am

Good morning year 6. I hope you all enjoyed your Easter break and didn't eat too much chocolate!! I tried my best not to.

I have been looking at Spag.com and have noticed that some children have been completing the activities I have set. Well done to Dian firstly for completing all of the tasks set so far, I have put on two more tasks for you to complete this week. Michelle, Zarak and Cindy have completed two of the tasks set and Charlie, Sophie and Liam have completed one of the tasks so well done to you too!!

Come on the rest of year 6, I want to see your results as well. The year 6 team are expecting you to do at least one of the Spag Tests each week to consolidate the work you are doing in your Rising Stars work books we sent home.

I noticed that one of the questions asked you had to change a question to a statement and you all found it tricky and changed the question to a command instead.

E.g. Did you check your work?

As a statement it would be ‘You did check your work.’

You try this one- Will you go for a walk?

As a statement it would be…

Welcome Back!

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 11:15am

Hello from Miss Kenwell!

Hi Year 6, and welcome back to the blog, I hope you all had fantastic Easters and have been managing to get outside to enjoy this amazing weather! It feels really strange not going into school again after our break and I'm sad that I don't get to see your faces for a little longer but don't worry, we've got plenty for you to be doing at home!

Make sure you check the blog daily, Miss Thornton, Mrs Ranyard and I will be putting up activities for you to have a go at each day and you should still have plenty left to do in your packs. We're really looking forward to seeing what you have been up to! I loved getting to see some of the learning Charlie has been completing - as well as working through his pack he has been so creative and has been keeping super busy cooking, making cannons out of different materials and creating his own games! Well done Charlie! I'm sure some of you have got some great activiteis you've completed - send them in, I love seeing them!

Maths

This week we're going be doing a bit of number and place value revision - this is really important as having a good understanding of number will help you with every other maths topic we cover!
Have a read of this to recap what we need to know in Year 6:
https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-negative-numbers
(There's a few games to practice to remind yourself of what negative numbers are!)

Once you are more confident, try these activities:
1. Place negative numbers on a number line (trickier than it sounds - can anyone get it exactly?)
https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/37/placing-numbers-on-a-number-line

2. Working out differences in temperatures - there are 4 different activities here - work your way through them (try drawing a number line to help you with these!)
https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/52/temperature--word-problems-

That's it from me today - make sure you get outside, do some exercise, draw, read or do anything that you enjoy, take lots of little breaks!

Looking forward to seeing what you have been up to! Send us pictures/ask us any questions at y6homelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk or tweet us at Year6Ravensbur1

Hello from Miss Ranyard!

I hope you've all had a wonderful Easter break at home and spent lots of lovely time with your families. I really wish we were all heading back into school today to catch up with each other but it is still nice to be back in touch again at least!

Apart from eating lots of chocolate and catching up on some reading in the sunshine and chasing after my twins, I have really enjoyed hearing about all the marvellous things that people are doing to help others in these strange times. I am sure you have all heard about Captain Tom Moore, the 99 year old man who has been raising money for the NHS. What an amazing man he is and what a lovely story to hear at this time.

I have attached a report about his incredible efforts - I though you might like to read and answer the questions attached too especially Michael in my English group as I know he has tweeted that he needs more things to read! Well done  Michael!

Please get in touch by email or twitter and let us know if there is anything you would like us to put on the blog for you.

I am sure that you have all been enjoying listening to Miss Thornton reading the novel "The Boy at the back of the Class". Before the holidays we got up to Chapter 6. Here is a summary of the story so far made on a storyboard- it is  a really fun way of showing the story as a sort of comic strip- click the link below and create your own summary of the story so far.

Please email or send us a copy of your storyboards to share, we would love to see them,

Wellbeing holiday challenge

Date: 6th Apr 2020 @ 11:35am

Hi everyone,

Happy Easter holidays!

If you're still looking to stay busy over the holidays then I know the teachers are setting some fun activities but you could also give this exciting project a go!

Liverpool Museum are asking children between the age of 4 and 11 to create their own exhibition or gallery all about you and your favourite things. The project involves creating a project, designing a poster and then creating a video and some of them will even win the chance to have their exhibition feature on their website as well as spending an afternoon at the museum and getting a behind the scenes tour.

There is more information here : https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/my-home-my-museum and in these pictures below. Please send us pictures or links to your home e-mail addresses if you do this!

If you missed any of the wellbeing challenges from last week then why not give them a go too?

Happy Easter!

Mrs Glover

Easter Baking Ideas!

Date: 4th Apr 2020 @ 9:05am

Good morning Ravensbury!

I'm just getting my shopping list ready and was looking up some Easter baking receipes I thought my children would enjoy over these next couple of weeks. There are some lovely ideas on the BBC Good Food website, and thought you might like to have a go at some Easter baking too!

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easter-kids

Really, I'm hoping to make Hot Cross Buns for the first time - but that all depends on whether I can buy some bread flour, and the flour aisle in the shops has been pretty empty! Perhaps I'll find some today!

Wishing you all a lovely Easter (and happy baking!),

Sentences of the Day

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 11:34am

Good morning year 6, I am mixing things up again today and we are going to look at two short paragraphs. The type of text is an information text about the effects of climate change and the increase in droughts. I have pinked all the good features for you to see and written little codes around them. See if you can find them all. I have also highlighted spelling errors in green for you to correct.

What is the link between climate change and drought?

Sub   While droughts can have different causes depending on the area of the world and other natural factors,C the majority of scientists have started to link more V intense droughts to climate change. This is because as more greenhouse gas emissions are relesed into the air, causing air temperatures to increase, more moisture evaporates from land and lakes, rivers and other bodies of water.List  Warmer temperatures also increase evaporation in plant soils, which effects plant life and can reduce rainfall even more. When rainfall does sub come to H drought-stricken areas, the drier soils it hits are less able to absorb the water, increasing the likelyhood of flooding.

What are some of the major impacts of drought?

                    v

It goes without saying droughts can be detrimental to the enviroment

but conj droughts also have serious consequences for peoples livelihoods, affecting everything from agriculture and water supply to transportasion and health.

Now have a go at writing your own paragraph about droughts and how climate change is increasing the risk of more serious problems on our world.  There are lots of facts online so have a google and see what you can find.

Wellbeing challenge number 6

Date: 3rd Apr 2020 @ 10:54am

Happy Friday everyone and well done for learning at home for 2 whole weeks! As strange as I've found it not being at school, the time has flown by for me so I hope it feels the same for you.

I'm going to do one final wellbeing challenge for today and then take a break for the next 2 weeks for the Easter holiday. However, check back on Monday morning as over the weekend I am going to set you a little wellbeing project in case anyone wants an Easter challenge.

Since it's the end of the week, today's challenge is to relax and get ready for the weekend so I want everyone to do a guided meditation. This is when you close your eyes and listen to a lovely soothing voice transport you to somewhere new. They are great for helping you to sleep or if you just want to relax at the end of your learning.

There are plenty available on Youtube, here are a few of my favourites:

Secret treehouse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWOHcGF1Tmc

Spaceship to the moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV9BBR1RoGg

Hot air balloon ride - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlv6Y1tq1sQ

Have a great Easter holiday and don't forget to check back for the challenge next week if you think you'd like to do it. I'll be back with a daily challenge from Monday the 20th of April if we're still at home then.

Past challenges

Thank you to Mrs Ganner for sending me a photo of her daughter completing the baking challenge from earlier in the week, it looks amazing and has made me want to bake something chocolately myself this weekend! I think I might make some brownies as a treat for my husband!

Wellbeing challenge number 5

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 11:30am

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all still working hard and staying safe. Thanks to both children and staff who've been e-mailing me pictures of their wellbeing challenges, it's really cheering me up! I've included some at the bottom of my post again.

Today's wellbeing challenge is all about yoga. Yoga is a great way to relax and escape for a while and it's good for both your bodies and minds. I like to put on some relaxing music while I do it and am lucky enough to have a lovely bright pink yoga mat too as otherwise I'd be on a hard wooden floor. A carpet, rug or blanket would work just as well though.

There's a great channel on Youtube called Cosmic Kids that does lots of different fun yoga sessions: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga (I know that Miss Bryce's class have done some of these sessions and we did some school last week too so some of you are already great at it!)

Any adults reading, or maybe older children who fancy something a bit more difficult could have a go at this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTANio_2E0Q

Here I am below doing the bound ankle pose :-)

Remember to let us know how you get on!

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

Thanks Ferdows in reception who has e-mailed in a picture of his origami rabbit from yesterdays challenge, I love it!

Another thank you to Mrs Iqbal and her son Adam who did the baking challenge from Tuesday and made this delicious looking chocolate cake!

Sentence of The Day

Date: 2nd Apr 2020 @ 10:21am

Good morning year 6, the sentence of day today is linked to information texts. I have based mine on one of the effects of climate change-flooding. The first sentence is one for you to correct; the second sentence has been changed to improve the effect. See what you think!

Although flooding cannot be prevented from happening, we can take precautions to limit the impact it can have on our lives and our property.

The sentence begins with a subordinate clause, which does not make sense on its own but adds relevant information to the main clause that follows. However it needs punctuating-that is your first job! There is also a spelling error-see if you can sport which familiar spelling pattern I have mixed up.

In the next sentence I have removed the possessive pronouns as information texts should be impersonal and ideally written in the third person. You can see, highlighted in green, I have changed the main clause to be passive and more general, replaced our with human and changed our to their also.

Although flooding cannot be prevented from happening, precautions can be taken to limit the impact it can have on human lives and their property.

What do you think?

Now have a go at trying to write your own subordinate sentence based on another effect of climate change, drought for example.

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 4

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 3:36pm

Hi year 6, time for chapter 4 forom the book The Boy at the Back of the Class.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=YzjfOPg

Today I would like you to read along and see if you can summarise the main events in the chapter in just two senetences.

Then I would like you to make a prediction about what you think might happen the following day.

I really dislike Mrs Grimsby; she not a very nice person is she?

Sentence of The Day

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 1:04pm

Good afternoon here is the sentence of the day.

Ths sentence can be used in an information text about flooding.

A flood is caused when large amounts of rain or melting snow canot be adsorbed into the ground a river or a stream; sometimes the rivers and streams are unabel to hold the rain or melting snow simply because they are to full to hold it all.

Can you correct the 2 identified spelling errors and find 2 on your own.

There is also a list with a missing comma for you to add.

Ordering Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 12:57pm

Hi year 6, here is a clip of how to order fractions, decimals and percentages.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=RXE3YKu

I have worked through the answers at the end so pause the clip before I start to over them to give yourself time to work them out for yourself. Have a look in your maths revision books and see if there are any questions on ordering fractions, decimals and percentages and have a practise.

01.04.20

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 11:55am

Hello again Year 6!

We're half-way through the week - it's gone so quickly! I've been having a look at the blog and I've realised that over the last couple of weeks, we've put a lot of activities on for you to have a go at.
Today's challenge is to have a look back through the blog and pick something you'd like to have a go at. It might be one of Miss Thornton's reading activities, a sentence of the day, one of the well-being activities, one of the maths challenges or the Taskmaster activity.

Choose something that you think you will enjoy - make sure you send us pictures or videos of what you have done, we love seeing what you have been up to!

Miss Kenwell

Wellbeing challenge number 4

Date: 1st Apr 2020 @ 10:52am

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I don't know about you but 2 of my favourite things in the world that always make me feel good are animals and travelling. While I can't travel now, I thankfully have my 2 rabbits, Rupert and Angel, to keep me company at home. Here is a picture of them underneath!

So since I can't travel right now, or see any other animals, I am doing these things in a different way: by looking at this website all about wild animals around the world https://gowild.wwf.org.uk/

It has information and activities about lots of different animals from lots of different regions (Year 2, it has a section on Polar animals which would link nicely to your topic right now!) so you can virtually travel round the world. It even has drawing and photography competitions that you can enter and have your work appear on the website!

I particularly like this activity to make Amazon animal hand shadows https://gowild.wwf.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-hand-shadows.pdf (although I didn't have much luck trying to take a good photo of mine. Perhaps you can do better than me and send one to your home learning address?)

So your wellbeing challenge for today is to choose your favourite area or animal from the website or even complete one of the activities and send a picture or just a bit of writing about it to your home learning e-mail address if you would like to. Or pehaps enter one of the competitions on there and tell us all about it.

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

A big thanks to Zainab in reception for sending in a picture of her brownies. Well done Zainab, they looked delicious!

And thanks to Miss Iqbal who sent me her picture of what makes her and her family smile that she did wih her son Adam! You can see it below:
