Wellbeing challenge number 16

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 11:24am

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a good weekend and are ready to work hard on your learning (and your wellbeing!) this week.

Today's challenge has actually come from a website that Mrs Hughes sent to me to look at so thank you Mrs Hughes!

Today I would like you to think about resilience which means keeping strong and bouncing back even in a difficult situation. I'd like you to design a Shield of Strength.

Think about what your strengths are, especially the ones that can help you at the moment while we're not in school, and write or draw (or both!) onto a shield. Here is my shield that you may want to use for help:

I have attached a template of the shield in case you want to use it but otherwise you can just fraw a shield on a plain piece of paper.

As always I would love to see your challenges so please send them to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk

Story Adventure The House on Haunted Hill Part 1

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 10:28am

The House on Haunted Hill

An Adventure

By B.G. Waldram

You shake your head as you march up the creepy hill.

How did you get yourself into this mess? The wind whips up and blows fiercely at you as if trying to keep you away from reaching your destination. You shiver and pull your coat up around your neck, desperately trying to keep the cruel wind out. You tell yourself that the shivers down your spine and the goose bumps that have popped out all over your body is due to the cold but deep down you know it’s because the house is now in sight.

The colossal gates stand guard and the house sits behind them all sinister and spooky. You ask yourself again why you were foolish to take up the dare: ‘Who is brave enough to enter the Midnight Mansion and retrieve the Ruby Heart?’

Are you brave enough to enter this adventure with me?

You smile to yourself as you recall the moment when you stood up and declared that you were worthy of the challenge.

All the others were amazed at your bravery. Several of them cheered joyfully, happy that they weren’t attempting the foolish challenge. Several girls came and kissed you on the cheek whilst the boys clapped your back heartily. There was no way of backing out now.

Hours later, you had left the warmth of your friends behind and you are now alone, trudging towards the mansion.

You arrive at the gates and push them open; they creak noisily as if crying out to all the ghosts of the night. You stand in front of the massive house, staring at the uninviting front door. Will you try it or do you want to go around the back?

Front door                                                                                    Around the back

The first to answer and choose either the front door or to go around the back of the house will decide our fate!

Happy Monday Year 6!

Are you ready to make the most of this week? I found it very hard to concentrate last week this week I'm trying to find some ways to help myself.
I've written myself a timetable for each day, starting with some exercise in the morning. I'm taking 3 15 minute breaks today to play my piano (as well as normal break and lunch times for food and snacks!) and tomorrow I might use them to colour in or go for a little walk. I'm hoping that having small breaks doing something I enjoy will help me focus more - I'll let you know how it goes!
What have you been doing in between learning to help you focus? Any tips for me? Email or tweet them in!

Today's learning
We're trying something slightly different this week as Mrs Ranyard has found some great maths starter activities:

Check back for the answers tomorrow!

Wellbeing challenge number 15

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 10:19am

Hi everyone and Happy Friday! I can't believe it's already the end of another week. I hope everyone is working hard and staying safe.

I got the idea for today's wellbeing challenge yesterday when I saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky. It was the brightest colours I've ever seen and I could see the whole arc. There was even a faint second rainbow next to it!

Photos don't really show how amazing it was but you can see how vivid the colours are:

The rainbow made me feel happy when I saw it and I thought it might make other people happy too! So today's challenge is to take a photo of something that makes you feel happy. You could find something in your house or do it on a walk. It could be a person, an animal, an object or even something that you've made. Anything that makes you feel happy or positive. If you don't have a camera, phone or tablet of your own then ask an adult if you can borrow theirs but please be careful with it!

If you'd like to share your happy photo then please e-mail it to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, I'd love to see it and then I can post some of them and spread the happiness around!

Have a good weekend,

Mrs Glover

Past challenges

Thanks to A who sent a photo of himself doing the breathing exercises I set yesterday, I hope they helped you feel nice and calm.

Sentence of The Day

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:02am

Good morning year 6! Can you believe it is Friday already? Today’s sentence of the day is a short piece of dialogue to show characterisation and how to organise speech.

“I really do’nt like the look of this place Tom,” whispered Ahmet.   That strange symbol reminds of something I’ve seen before and it is giving me a bad feeling about this place.”

“Oh stop being a scaredy-cat as usual Ahmet; honestly we will be in and out as quick as a flash, once we get proof that we went in all of the rooms. Come on!” insisted Tom.

Can you find the two punctuation errors. One is a piece of punctuation that is in the wrong place and the other is a missing piece of speech punctuation.

I would also like you to look at the word ‘bad’ and see if you can use an improved word which still fits in with the sentence.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Write the next DAD sentences as they enter the house.

Describe what they see as soon as they enter.

Explain an action-how or what do the characters do?

Dialogue- What do they say to one another?

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 12

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 9:00am

Here is the next Chapter Syrah and the Sea. Spot my mistake at the start of the chapter!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=JUpTFZ2

Why do you think that no one could stop asking Ahmet questions even though Mrs Khan had specifically asked them not to?

Who are the ‘Messengers’? What is their job?

Why is Victor the worst Messenger? Use evidence from pages 134 and 135 to help you answer.

Had Brenden-the-Bully learned his lesson? Use page 136 to find evidence to support your answer.

Did the narrator of the story want to give Ahmet his Tintin book? If not why didn’t he just take it back?

When the narrator heard about Ahmet’s sister, his mother and his father he wanted to cry. Why did he have to stop himself?

What do you think might happen next to change everything?

CC vocabulary

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 3:51pm

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how you are getting along with the CC activity for this week. Look back through the blog if you missed it. Miss Thornton and I are completing a vocabulary course online and one of our tasks this week is to write up what we have understood so far and to use as many key words as possible… so we are having a little competition!  Here is a little challenge for you too… how many of the words below you can include in your writing – remember you can present your writing as you wish or maybe you could make a GLOSSARY of this key vocabulary instead.

#THROWBACK THURSDAY

Here is a little film from way back in November at the IWM -it seems so long ago now! How many familiar faces can you spot?

Missing you all,

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 11

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Here is Chapter 11 for you to follow today. I think the narrator of the story is like Felix from 'Once' in so many ways!

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=k9oSlNI

Think about Chapter 12. Using the title as a clue, what do you think the next chapter will be about?

Will he get to ask Ahmet any more of his questions?

Do you think Brenden-the-Bully will play anymore tricks?

Wellbeing challenge number 14

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:01am

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed some relaxing colouring yesterday, here is a picture of mine. It isn't quite finished yet but I had a nice relaxing hour doing it last night:

Today's challenge is to do a mindfulness breathing activity. Mindfulness can help you relax and be in the moment, appreciating everything that's around you.

Just one breath

Find a relaxing place where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, either with your legs crossed or any comfortable posture. This activity can be done in as little as one minute, but you can also do it for longer periods of time.

Begin by setting a timer for one minute.

Start breathing deeply in and out. Notice how the breath feels as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Pay attention to any sensations that you notice or any sounds that you hear.

Take another slow deep breath and see if you can imagine how the breath moves down into the lungs and then back up again. Thank your body and breath for giving you life and keeping you healthy.

Take one more deep breath and hold the breath for a moment - then release it.

If any thoughts worry you, try and imagine your thoughts immersed in a white, puffy cloud and push the thought cloud out of your awareness.

Afterward, notice how you feel after taking this one-minute break.

If you want to tell me about your experience or send any photos of yourself doing the activity then e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.

There are more simple instructions below.

Sentence of The Day

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 9:35am

Good morning year 6. I hope you enjoyed writing a DAD (description, action, dialogue) sentence yesterday and you noticed that I had misspelt fierce and apprehensive yesterday. I asked you also to see if you could improve the word 'walked'. You could have used stumbled or trudged

Today the sentence I am going to write is an action sentence using an expanded list and powerful vocabulary, making sure I keep the atmosphere needed for a spooky story.

Tom and Ahmet knew it was too late to turn back now!  A dare was a dare!

Cautiously, Tom lifted the old, tarnished gate latch; the gate swung open, forced by the wind that had whipped up a strange force around them, they both clung on to each other, trembling, as they made their way to the ancient, warped front door and both stopped simultaneously and stared at the strange, yet familiar, symbol right in the center.

Can you spot the spelling mistake?

I have also included a 5/6 spelling in my sentence can you find it?

What do you think the word simultaneously means?

EXTRA! EXTRA!

Can you add some dialogue? What might Tom say to Ahmet? What could he reply?

Wellbeing challenge number 13

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:35am

Hello everyone,

It's a rather miserable looking Wednesday out there so my wellbeing challenge today is an indoor one.

It's actually quite a simple challenge today; I'd simply like you to do some colouring. Colouring is a lovely relaxing activity that you can do on your own for some me-time or together with a family member to make it a more sociable activity.

I think most of you were given some colouring pages when we finished school but if you've already used these and don't have any more at home then good news, there is a website where you can do online colouring:

https://www.online-coloring.com/

Or you could always draw something to colour! Anything you like.

I have a new Enchanted Forest colouring book that my husband bought me (pictured below) that I'm going to do a bit of colouring in later, maybe while I listen to a podcast or to some music to have a bit of a break from staring at a screen. I'll post a picture of my efforts tomorrow.

Remember to send in pictures of your challenges to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

A big thanks to Roderigo from Year 1 who sent me a picture of his crystal ball challenge from yesterday, some fantastic goals there!

The Boy at the Back of the Class Chapter 10 Part 2

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:03am

Hi everyone! Well here is the next instalment of our story-part 2 of chapter 10.

https://www.showme.com/sh?h=PqmcYvQ

Questions

On page 10, what country did Ahmet go to and where did he stay?

Why do you think Ahmet and Ms Hemsi used pictures to explain Ahmet’s story?

Does Ahmet like living in England? Use evidence on page 112 to support your answer.

How do you think everyone felt after hearing Ahmet’s story?

What question would you have asked Ahmet?

Why didn’t Mrs Khan want the children to ask Ahmet questions without checking with her or Ms Hemsi first?

Sentence of The Day

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 9:26am

Good morning year 6. Today we are going to continue to look at Spooky Stories and the sentence you are going to explore would be ideal for you to use at the start of a Spooky Story to hook in your reader.

As the feirce wind howled around Tom and Ahmet, the moonlight giving them limited visibility, they aprehensively walked up the uneven path and approached the ancient uninviting gates which guarded the monstrous house beyond.

Can you find two spelling errors? They are quite tricky!

I have also missed out an important piece of punctuation. CLUE- It is used to separate adjectives.

I would also like you to think of a better word than walked.

Write out your sentence and send it to us at our email address or Tweet us your sentence.

EXTRA, EXTRA!!

Could you now add to my sentence using DAD - I have written the description now you can add an action from the characters then some dialogue?

Wellbeing challenge number 12

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 10:55am

Good morning everyone,

Today's challenge is all about thinking positivity and making the most of your time while you're not at school smiley.

Imagine looking into a cyrstal ball 3 months from now.

Draw or write what challenges you are facing, what positive changes you want to make and what might be different in 3 months time.

Try to focus on things that seem possible to achieve like starting a new hobby, learning a few words in a new language or getting better at some of your learning like reading or times tables.

I've done mine on the computer (on MS Word) as my paper is in the study where my husband is on a video call for work so I didn't want to disturb him! But you can do yours however you want.

I've included a picture of mine below if you want to have a look!

Please feel free to tell me about any of the wellbeing challenges you have done, I'd love to see what you're all doing in your free time! You can now e-mail me on Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to let me know (or to contact me or Mrs Harriott about any EAL home learning too)

Have a good day!
