CBeebies Reading Challenge Tuesday 5th May

I hope you enjoyed last night’s story, I know I did. Our second story of the week is read by Robert Webb and the story is called ‘The Big Animal Mix Up’ In this book lots of the animals get all mixed up in a really funny way and there are lots of pairs of rhyming words in it. I spotted ‘fur, purr’ and ‘laugh, giraffe’

Can you tell your grown-up some words that rhyme in the story?

Maths Daily Challenge - Tuesday 5th May

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 2:29pm

In Maths this week we are going to be naming and describing shapes. First of all I’m going to read you the shape book from our maths area in school. You will have seen this book before and talked about what you can see with your friends when you have played with it in class.  Watch the video then complete the challenge.

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

Shape Hunt Challenge – naming shapes and tracing around them

Did you notice how I traced around the shapes in the book? If you look around inside your house you will be able to find shapes to trace around too. Notice if the shapes have curved or straight edges. Draw the shapes you find and see if you can match them to the shapes in the book using the photos attached.

What kind of shapes have you found? Are they straight or curved? Can you think of other words to describe your shapes?

I’m going on a shape hunt now. I’ll be back tomorrow with more marvellous maths games

Phonics Daily Challenge - Tuesday 5th May

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 2:27pm

Phonics Daily Challenge  -   Tuesday 5th May

To start our week of Phonics learning, watch the video of me reading ‘Alfie’s Alphabet’. This is one of my favourite books by Shirley Hughes because we see lots of people and objects in Alfie’s life that link to the letters of the alphabet.

Alphabet Challenge

I’d like you to start thinking about the initial sounds that are in your life. What sound does your name begin with? Can you find that page in ‘Alfie’s Alphabet’ and point to the capital letter on that page?

Find the pages for your family and say their name then say their sound then say the name of the letter

e.g. Alfie, a, capital A

Draw your family and label each person with their initial sound capital letter. You’ll be able to use this drawing with the action challenge I set for you tomorrow.

My family’s Christian names begin with A, M, S, V. Can you remember what my family’s names are?

Take a look at 'My Family' below and have fun drawing yours.

I’ll post another phonics challenge tomorrow

Wellbeing challenge number 16

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 11:28am

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a good weekend and are ready to work hard on your learning (and your wellbeing!) this week.

Today's challenge has actually come from a website that Mrs Hughes sent to me to look at so thank you Mrs Hughes!

Today I would like you to think about resilience which means keeping strong and bouncing back even in a difficult situation. I'd like you to design a Shield of Strength.

Think about what your strengths are, especially the ones that can help you at the moment while we're not in school, and write or draw (or both!) onto a shield. Here is my shield that you may want to use for help:

I have attached a template of the shield in case you want to use it but otherwise you can just fraw a shield on a plain piece of paper.

As always I would love to see your challenges so please send them to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.sch.uk

CBeebies Reading Challenge Monday 4th May

Today Angelica Bell is going to read ‘Nobot the Robot with No Bottom’. What a funny title and what a funny book! It made me giggle when I read it. Another reason I like it is because the animals are very creative with their uses for Nobot’s bottom! Tell your grown-up what you like about it and why.

Can you send me some photos of you using an object in interesting and different ways?

Weekly Vocabulary Challenge โ€˜Baby Animalsโ€™

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 8:28am

Describe the Baby Animals Weekly Challenge

I bought this book from Home Bargains last week for you. I know how much you like animals.  You might have some animals like these at home. We call them pets. I haven’t got any pets but if I did, I’d love to have a dog. Dogs are silly and they like cuddles, which is a bit like me! Tell your grown up what you know about pets. How do you look after them?

Watch and listen to the Show Me Video and join in pointing to the words as I read the story. You’ll need your listening ears too because I’m going to ask you lots of questions.

http://www.showme.com/sh?h=9hZkYee

Use the Superhero Speaking Cape Symbols from class to help you (see photo below)

Pause the video: Can you use shape words to describe the animals?

Shape Vocabulary –describe the shapes – round, circular, tall, pointy, wide,

Pause the video: Can you use texture words to describe the pictures?

Texture Vocabulary– fuzzy, soft, fluffy, silky, squidgy, smooth

Challenge:

Find groups of objects in your house and sort them by shape or texture. Can you describe your objects using interesting vocabulary? I’ll post the groups I found on Friday

I hope you find lots of objects to put in your groups. Maybe you could have some spiky objects or some hard objects. Make sure you send in photos or videos of your learning to

Weekly Connected Curriculum Challenge 'The Family Book - Creating Family Art'

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 8:08am

Creating Family Art

This week we will be learning about our families and there are lots activities you can choose to do after listening to the story I am reading for you. Watch the video of me reading 'The Family Book'

WATCH ME READ THE BOOK HERE

Choose one or more of the challenges that your family would like to complete with you and then send your photos to us

nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Exciting Science Challenge (You need a packet of Skittles sweets)

Do the ‘skittlescope experiment’ together and use your speaking skills to find out what will happen.

First of all watch the video and talk to your family as you find out together. Explain what you think is happening and try to work out what will happen next as you watch this video. Then retell the video and carry out the experiment for yourself using your super scientist skills.

Messy Outdoor Art Challenge (see photo below)

Create a picture on an old bed sheet using paint filled balloons, your feet, hands and body! Use your hands to move the paint and draw your family’s faces. Can you write your name too? Talk to your family about completing this challenge, listen to each other and decide if this is something your family would like to do. Hope the weather doesn’t stop your fun! After creating your art, hang it up on the fence outside and see what happens when it rains next.

What happened to the colours as they mix?

Do you think your art will look the same as the children’s in your class at school? Why do you think that?

Artist’s Creative Colour Mixing Challenge  (see photos below)

Use a paintbrush to experiment mixing new colours using 2 or more paints. Use these colours to paint a picture of something you like. You might want to paint your family or your house or a pet or another rainbow for your window? You can choose anything you want because you are the artist.

The picture below is by an artist called Banksy and he created it to honour the NHS workers. I love how the ‘S’ is like the Superman logo because our NHS workers are all Superheroes.

I can’t wait to see your photos!

Have an amazing time learning with your family

Wellbeing challenge number 15

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 10:21am

Hi everyone and Happy Friday! I can't believe it's already the end of another week. I hope everyone is working hard and staying safe.

I got the idea for today's wellbeing challenge yesterday when I saw the most amazing rainbow in the sky. It was the brightest colours I've ever seen and I could see the whole arc. There was even a faint second rainbow next to it!

Photos don't really show how amazing it was but you can see how vivid the colours are:

The rainbow made me feel happy when I saw it and I thought it might make other people happy too! So today's challenge is to take a photo of something that makes you feel happy. You could find something in your house or do it on a walk. It could be a person, an animal, an object or even something that you've made. Anything that makes you feel happy or positive. If you don't have a camera, phone or tablet of your own then ask an adult if you can borrow theirs but please be careful with it!

If you'd like to share your happy photo then please e-mail it to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk, I'd love to see it and then I can post some of them and spread the happiness around!

Have a good weekend,

Mrs Glover

Friday's Maths!

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 7:28am

Hi everyone,

Let's start our day by singing a days of the week song (a different one today!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loINl3Ln6Ck

What day is it today? Thats right... It's Fantastic Friday! What day will it be tomorrow?

This week, in our Maths learning we have been ordering and sequencing events.

For today's challenge you will need a teddy or toy (doll)!

You are going to help one of your teddies or toys to get ready for bed, by talking through the order and sequence of what they need to do.

What do they need to do first? What do they need to do next?

Talk about all the things your toy needs to do before they go to bed – Have they brushed their teeth? Have they put on their night clothes? Can you read them a bedtime story?

Take a look at the picture below.

With your adult see if you can make a list of the sequence. You can help your teddy by drawing pictures and talking about the order, what comes first? What do they need to do next?

You could also have a go at this extra challenge this weekend too!

Extra challenge: Draw pictures of activities you do this weekend. Can you use the words first, next, after that and finally to describe the order of what you have done?

Amazing! Well done for all of your super work this week! Keep sending pictures of your learning to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

I hope you have a fantastic weekend! smiley

Friday 1st May - Phonics

Date: 1st May 2020 @ 7:11am

Good Morning Nursery...Happy Friday!

We have been very busy this week learning about rhyme and completeing lots of rhyming activities.

Today I would like you to play a game with me!

The game called 'I spy'.

CLICK HERE TO PLAY 'I SPY' GAME

Fantastic! I hope you were able to make a rhyming pair by matching my word with the picture that rhymed with it!

It would be great if you can have a go at playing this game at home with your grown up. You could draw some pictures or find some objects and ask your adult to play.

Your grown up can say 'I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with...(bat)'. Then you can find the picture or object that rhymes with their word (cat)!

I have also attached a rhythm and rhyme home learning challenge sheet for you to have a look at. See if you can complete some of these fun rhyming activities over the weekend too!

Have a great day!

Wellbeing challenge number 14

Date: 30th Apr 2020 @ 10:02am

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed some relaxing colouring yesterday, here is a picture of mine. It isn't quite finished yet but I had a nice relaxing hour doing it last night:

Today's challenge is to do a mindfulness breathing activity. Mindfulness can help you relax and be in the moment, appreciating everything that's around you.

Just one breath

Find a relaxing place where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a comfortable position, either with your legs crossed or any comfortable posture. This activity can be done in as little as one minute, but you can also do it for longer periods of time.

Begin by setting a timer for one minute.

Start breathing deeply in and out. Notice how the breath feels as it moves in and out of your body. Notice how the air feels on your skin. Pay attention to any sensations that you notice or any sounds that you hear.

Take another slow deep breath and see if you can imagine how the breath moves down into the lungs and then back up again. Thank your body and breath for giving you life and keeping you healthy.

Take one more deep breath and hold the breath for a moment - then release it.

If any thoughts worry you, try and imagine your thoughts immersed in a white, puffy cloud and push the thought cloud out of your awareness.

Afterward, notice how you feel after taking this one-minute break.

If you want to tell me about your experience or send any photos of yourself doing the activity then e-mail me on EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk.

There are more simple instructions below.

Yesterday we look at pictures from the book 'Jaspers beanstalk' and you talked to your adult about the order and sequence of the story by saying what Jasper did on each day.

Today I would like you to think about the order of your day.

Take a look at the picture below and discuss with your adult what you do at different times of the day.

Talk about your morning and evening routine: What do you do first, next, last?

Can you draw pictures to show the order of the things you do at these times of the day?

Don't forget, we love to see your learning so make sure you send your pictures to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Wellbeing challenge number 13

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:36am

Hello everyone,

It's a rather miserable looking Wednesday out there so my wellbeing challenge today is an indoor one.

It's actually quite a simple challenge today; I'd simply like you to do some colouring. Colouring is a lovely relaxing activity that you can do on your own for some me-time or together with a family member to make it a more sociable activity.

I think most of you were given some colouring pages when we finished school but if you've already used these and don't have any more at home then good news, there is a website where you can do online colouring without having to have any colours or anything printed out:

https://www.online-coloring.com/

Or you could always draw something to colour! Anything you like.

I have a new Enchanted Forest colouring book that my husband bought me (pictured below) that I'm going to do a bit of colouring in later, maybe while I listen to a podcast or to some music to have a bit of a break from staring at a screen. I'll post a picture of my efforts tomorrow.

Remember to send in pictures of your challenges to EALhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Mrs Glover

Wednesday 29th April - Maths

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 2:21pm

Hi everyone!

Today we are going to start our Maths learning by singing the days of the week song.

Click on the link below to listen to the days of the week. You can teach this song to your grown up as we sing it every day at Nursery!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY

Jasper's beanstalk

Today we are going to be looking at the order and sequence of the story.

You can remind yourself of the story and listen to it again by using the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4OIrJWXfjs

Today I would like you to talk with your grown up about what Jasper does on each day of the week.

Use the picture cards attached below to discuss what he does on each day of the week.

Talk about the order and sequence of the story. What does he do first? What happens next? Which day follows? What happens on that day?

Today is Wednesday. What does Jasper do on Wednesday? What will he do tomorrow? (Thursday)

Below I have attached a rhyme to help you remember the order and sequence of events for the story.

Wednesday 29th April - Phonics

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 1:27pm

Good Morning!

Let’s start our learning today by listening to a rhyming story.

UCan you join in with the words to the story and repetitive phrases?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoQyyB5xvLk

Today we are continuing to learn about rhyme.

We are going to play a game called ‘odd one out’.

Have a look at the pictures on the strips below and say the name of each item.

Listen carefully … can you find the one that doesn’t rhyme with the others? Remember to listen to the sound at the end of the word.

Let’s see if you can find the rhyming pair?

Which one is the ‘odd one out’?

You could collect some objects from around your house and have a go at playing this game with items too! (You may be able to use the following rhyming pairs: hat, cat, dog, log, pan, can, car, jar, pen, ten, duck, truck. Then find some other objects too that will not rhyme)

Ask an adult to choose 3 items (a rhyming pair and one that does not rhyme) and place them on the table. Point and name each item. Then have a go at finding the rhyming pair and the ‘odd one out’.

I hope you have fun playing this rhyming game!

Wellbeing challenge number 12

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 10:56am

Good morning everyone,

Today's challenge is all about thinking positivity and making the most of your time while you're not at school smiley.

Imagine looking into a cyrstal ball 3 months from now.

Draw or write what challenges you are facing, what positive changes you want to make and what might be different in 3 months time.

Try to focus on things that seem possible to achieve like starting a new hobby, learning a few words in a new language or getting better at some of your learning like reading or times tables.

I've done mine on the computer (on MS Word) as my paper is in the study where my husband is on a video call for work so I didn't want to disturb him! But you can do yours however you want.

I've included a picture of mine below if you want to have a look!

Please feel free to tell me about any of the wellbeing challenges you have done, I'd love to see what you're all doing in your free time! You can now e-mail me on Ealhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk to let me know (or to contact me or Mrs Harriott about any EAL home learning too)

Have a good day!

Jasper's Beanstalk

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 9:57am

In the story ‘Jasper’s beanstalk’ Jasper planted a bean and waited for the bean to grow.

Hopefully the weather will stay fine this week, so when you go outside have a look around and see if you can spot things that grow.

What plants, trees or flowers can you see outside or in your garden? You can use the 'plant and flower hunt' sheet attached to see which ones you can spot.

Talk and describe to your adult what you can see.

How long do you think it has taken for the plant, tree or flowers to grow?

How do you think it has changed?

You could draw a picture or take photographs of the plants / trees you find.

It would be great if you could plant your own bean /bulbs / plants / flowers or vegetables at home and watch them grow. You would then be able to see how it has changed over time.

I am going to plant sunflower seeds in my garden and watch to see how tall the sunflowers will grow!

You could even try planting pepper seeds or apple pips and watch to see if they grow too!

Have a look at the picture below for some creative planting ideas.

You can also use the links and activities below to find out some more about growing and planting:

Vocabulary Challenge

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 8:32am

Yesterday we read the story ‘Jaspers beanstalk’. If you haven’t had chance to listen to it, you can by using the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da6lxY_8jmU&t=18s

At nursery we are ‘Speaking Superheroes’!

Over the last two terms, we have learnt lots of vocabulary relating to size and we use a wide range of words to describe and compare different sizes of things.

Do you remember this part of the story?

Today’s vocabulary challenge is to look at the picture above.

Think carefully about how the beanstalk has changed over time.

Now you can be a ‘Speaking Superhero’ by using lots of great words to describe the different sizes of the beanstalk?

Can you draw different sized beanstalks?

Use your ‘Speaking Superhero’ words to describe the sizes of your beanstalks and ask your grown up to write the words you have used next to your picture.

Don’t forget to send a picture of your learning to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

I can’t wait to see your super work!

Yesterday we went on a shape hunt. Did you find lots of shaped objects?

I went on a shape hunt around the garden. Take a look at the different shaped objects I found and talk to your adult about all the shapes you can see.

Now we are going to have a go at drawing some of the shapes:

CLICK HERE TO WATCH TODAY'S SHOW ME CLIP

Today's challenge is to have a go at drawing or painting the shapes you have found.

We would love to see your shape pictures so make sure you send them to: nurseryhomelearning@ravensbury.manchester.sch.uk

Tuesday 28th April - Rhyme

Date: 28th Apr 2020 @ 7:23am

Good Morning Nursery!

I hope you enjoyed going on an insect hunt yesterday, looking for 'i' for insects.

What insects did you find? How many insects did you see? Where did you find them? Which insect did you like the most?

Take a look at the pictures below of the insects I found. Can you name the insects? How many insects can you see?

Today we are going to be learning about rhyme and finding rhyming pairs.

Let’s start by sing a nursery rhyme. Can you join in with the song and say the words that rhyme?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGgsklW-mtg

At Nursery we have played lots of rhyming games and made rhyming strings.

Can you think of a word that rhymes with the pictures below?

Now have a go at playing this rhyming game to see if you can find the rhyming pairs.

https://www.turtlediary.com/game/words-that-rhyme.html

Listen carefully to the name of the object. Then match it to its rhyming pair.

You can use the sheet attached to find and say the rhyming pairs. You could also cut out the pictures or ask an adult to draw them onto pieces of paper, turn them face down and play a game to find the rhyming pairs.

You can also sing along to some of your favourite nursery rhymes by using the link below:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/curations/nursery-rhymes
