Friday 15th May: Phonics - Rhyme

Hi Nursery!

Let’s remember some of the animals from the rhyming stories we have looked at this week…

You can remind yourself of them by listening to the stories again - just click on the picture of the book below:

Can you act out some of the animals from the story? Enjoy moving around like the animals. For example: a jumping frog, parrot flapping/flying, gorilla thumping chest, snake slithering along the floor, mule trotting, hare hopping, dog responding to instructions (walk, stop, sit, fetch, lie-down)

This week we have found lots of rhyming pairs and created rhyming strings of words.

Now we are going to complete this fun activity, where you need to have a look at the pictures on the rhyming strips to see if you can spot the odd one out!

Yesterday your challenge was to make your very own ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ and to use your caterpillar to talk about the sequence of events in the story.

I hope you enjoyed making it and talking about what the caterpillar ate each day.

Today I would like you to think about the different activities you do each day.

Here is today’s challenge…

With your grown up, talk about the different activities you do each day.

Create a caterpillar template like the example below and draw a picture or symbol of something you do for each day of the week.

Use your caterpillar to talk through the sequence of the activities you do. Remember to use good sentences when talking. Point to each day on your caterpillar and tell your family the event that you do.

Weekly Connected Curriculum Challenge: Celebrating Special Times

Celebrating Special Times

Hi Nursery!

This week for our Connected Curriculum learning, we are thinking about special times and celebrations that we share with our family. (Please refer back to the Connected Curriculum blog posted on Monday)

Your challenge is to plan and prepare a celebration for your favourite teddy / toy!

Yesterday we had a birthday party for one of my daughter’s teddy – Rosie!

We set out some party food and invited some of Rosie’s friends to have a little tea party.

We then danced to some music and played some party games!

We made Rosie a yummy chocolate birthday cake. We put candles on top and sang Happy Birthday to her!

After that we gave Rosie a birthday card that we had made too!

How old do you think Rosie is now? Can you count the candles on her cake and card and say her special number?

Have you planned and prepared a celebration for your teddy / toy’s birthday?

Think about…

How are you going to celebrate? What will you do?

Maybe you would like to have a party, or maybe you would like to make a birthday card or hat.

What do you need to do to prepare a party? Where is the party going to be? What food do you need? Maybe you could make some decorations or even bake a cake!

Think about how old your teddy/toy is going to be.

What special number do you know? How many candles do you need to put on your cake?

Can you draw a picture of a cake and put on the amount of candles for your special number?

Can you make a birthday card, hat or a badge to show your special number?

Wellbeing challenge 14.5.20

Good morning everyone,

I've had a request to make the font on my blog a little easier to read so that some of the younger children can have a go at reading it themselves which is a fantastic idea, so hopefully this will be a bit easier to read!

Now today we are going to look another rhyming book called ‘Oi Cat’.

For today’s challenge, you are going to create rhyming strings by playing a game called:

Cat in a hat: A list with a twist!

What you’ll need: paper, pen

What to do:

1. On a big sheet of paper, write the word cat. Then underneath write the rhyming sound all down the page (_at).
2. Adults: Ask your child to come up with as many rhyming words as they can. Quite simply, they have to add a letter to the beginning of the word. Don’t worry if it’s a real word or not!
3. Take turns to come up with silly sentences based on the rhymes. Can you make each other laugh?

Play the game again for:

Dog on a log: A list with a twist!

Repeat the game as above, making another list of words that rhyme with the word dog.

Yesterday you listened to the story of the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’. If you missed it then take a look using the link below.

You then used pictures from the story to talk about the sequence of events, using language: first, then, next, after and finally.

Think about the events of the story. Can you remember the order of fruits and food the caterpillar ate? Use the picture cards below to help you.

Talk through the pictures with your grown up and tell them the sequence of what the caterpillar ate.

Today’s challenge is to make your own lift the flap Hungry Caterpillar so you can talk through the sequence of what the caterpillar ate. Take a look at the picture below for an idea of what you will be making!

Ask an adult to help you to prepare the caterpillar.

1. Fold a piece of paper and draw 8 circles, starting at the fold.
2. Cut out the circles (Remember not to cut along the fold, otherwise the flaps won’t lift!) You might like to colour and draw a face on the first circle (this can just be a flat circle – no flap needed!)
3. Next stick the circles on to a long strip of paper, or place them in order. Starting with the head, followed by all the other lift up circles.
4. Ask your grown up to write the days on the top of each flap, starting with Monday to Sunday.
5. Now use the picture cards below to see the order of what the caterpillar ate, starting with 1 apple.
6. Lift up the flap and under each day draw what the caterpillar ate. So under Monday you will need to draw 1 apple, under Tuesday 2 pears and so on.
7. You might like to add some colour to your caterpillar and foods.

AMAZING!

Once you have completed drawing the pictures and have coloured your caterpillar, use your caterpillar to tell your grown up the sequence of what he ate by lifting up each flap in turn.

Wellbeing challenge 13.5.20

Good morning everyone,

I'm sorry I didn't post a wellbeing challenge yesterday but I was in school! I meant to do it the night before but then forgot and had an early night ready for school yesterday, oops! Sorry about that but I'm back today and have a choice of 2 for you to do to make up for it.

You've been very creative lately (please see the past challenges below!) so I'm giving you something a bit different today. One is i you would like to relax and one is if you would like to have a bit of fun.

The first challenge is to do Jason Manford's comedy kids quiz at 1.30pm today, available from the following YouTube link. If you can't do it at 1.30 then it will be up for a few days after. and if you want more then have a look on his YouTube channel for past quizzes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhVLZjO7Tms

The second challenge is also at 1.30pm although I think you can watch it later if you're not free then! The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth are doing Turtle Time! A live video of their Green Sea Turtle who is called Friday. I always find watching sea animals very relaxing so you could watch it, learn some facts about turtles and then have a go at drawing the turtle. This week we are going to focus on the sequence of ‘how to plant a bean/seed’.

To talk about the sequence, we need to say the order of what we need to do.

I am going to plant some seeds in my garden (with a little help from my big girl!).

For your next challenge - It would be great if you could plant your own seeds / bulbs / plants / flowers or vegetables at home and tell your grown up the sequence of how to plant.

Tuesday 12th May – Rhyming strings

I hoped you enjoyed yesterday’s rhyming book ‘Oi Frog’. Did you find lots of rhyming pairs in the story?

Now today we are going to use some of these words to make a rhyming string.

At nursery we have baskets of rhyming objects. Hopefully you will remember these items from the baskets.

Challenge: Can you name each object below to make a rhyming string? What end sound do the words have? Can you think of some more words to continue the rhyming string further? (You can make some words up too!)

We play a game at nursery called ‘beat it’ – We pass the objects around the circle and take turns to say the name of the item being held.

Can you teach this game to your family? Don’t worry if you haven’t got all of the objects - you could help your grown up draw pictures of the rhyming words, then place them in a circle and name each item as you point to each picture. Try to keep in time with the beat of the music and have a little dance too!

Wellbeing challenge 11.5.20

Good morning everyone,

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend! I spent a lot of time in the sun, in fact possibly a bit too much time! I also had some delicious food and lovely video chats with some of my friends.

Thanks again for all your wellebing challenge e-mails. It really cheers me up whenever I get one and see what you've all been up to!

Today's wellbeing challenge is actually Miss Bryce's idea so thanks Miss Bryce! It's a creative one and is to design your own superhero.

Have a think about what is important to you and then either draw, make or write about your superhero.

Weekly Vocabulary Challenge – The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This week we are looking at one of my favourite stories. It is about a caterpillar who ‘pops’ out of a tiny egg, he then eats lots of food and builds himself a cocoon. At the end of the story the caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly!

Can you guess which story it is? That’s right, it’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

We will also be using this book in our Maths learning later in the week too.

In the story the caterpillar eats lots of different fruit and foods.

Can you talk about the different types of fruit in the story and use words to describe what they are like?

Challenge:  Your challenge this week, is to use our ‘Speaking Superhero’ vocabulary to look at and explore different fruits. (You may have some different fruits from the story at home, that’s fine too!)

Have a look at the fruits you have, name them, talk about how it looks and feels, then use words to describe what they are like.

Look carefully, you may be able to use different words to describe the fruit when it has its peel on and off e.g. a banana.

Does your fruit have pips, or seeds or a stone? Or does it have spikey leaves like a pineapple? Can you describe what it is like on the outside and compare how it is different to the inside?

You could be creative with your fruits. Maybe you could use your fruit to make a fruit salad or fruit kababs or even try creating a very hungry caterpillar! Have a look at the pictures below for some ideas!

Last week you completed lots of fabulous shape work with Mrs Ganner.

We are going to start this week by continuing your super work by talking about and using lots of words to describe the shapes of objects and use vocabulary to describe them.

Straight Shapes Shape Challenge

Look at the photos attached to this blog. What shapes can you see? All of the shapes are straight sided shapes. Can you name them?

You could use chalks or paint or felt tips to make your own straight shapes picture - make the straight lines with a ruler or masking tape like the one in the photos.

Wellbeing challenge number 19

Good morning,

Yet another lovely sunny day! I'm looking forward to getting out in the sun later although I actually got a little bit sunburnt yesterday! Remeber that suncream!

Today's challenge is a creative one, I'd like you to try a bit of origami. Origami is the art of folding paper and while it can be a bit tricky, it's also quite a nice relaxing activity once you know what you're doing and you end up with something that looks amazing. You could even make a few things and use them to decorate your house!

What you need for all origami is a square of paper, either plain or patterned. If youre not sure how to turn a piece of paper into a square then have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPxi1dIWRws

Then you could take some time to decorate your paper if you like before you fold it.

Just follow each instruction carefully and the good thing about watching a video is that you can rewind it as much as you like! If you're not a fan of butterflies then feel free to have a look for something else on the Red Ted Art channel.

Here's my butterfly that I've just made. It's not perfect but it's the first time I've ever done it so I was quite impressed with myself!

Maths Daily Challenge  - Thursday 7^th May

Today were going to look at how we can create our own shapes from something I’m sure you have been collecting over the week - toilet or kitchen roll tubes. Tubes are round and curved but they are also flexible so you can squash them into whatever shape you want to create. Will you make straight edged shapes or curved? Are there any shapes that are curved and straight?

Shape Toilet Roll Challenge

Look at the picture of toilet roll shape printers and work together with your adult to make your round, curved toilet roll tubes into new shapes. You choose which shapes – it’s your challenge.

Dip the end of the shape roll into paint or food colouring or even muddy water and make prints. You could do your printing in the back garden, on the pavement, on paper or material - anywhere your grown up says you can. I had to use tomato sauce for the red in my picture and I didnt have paper so I used kitchen roll!

Talk about one of the shapes you’ve printed to see if your grown-up can guess which one it is. You’re not allowed to say their shape names! You have to describe it.
