Building Bridges

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 8:59am

We had so much fun yesterday morning building a bridge which would hold the weight of a toy car...out of marshmallows and spaghetti! After lots of teamwork (and mess!), we created some very successful designs!

We're really excited for this new half term's topic - "Why does the world need great inventions?" - and will be finding out about lots of different inventions and the impact they have had!

The Foggy Foggy Forest

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:50pm

For the last two weeks we have started to think about light and dark through the story 'The Foggy Foggy Forest' by Nick Sharratt. In this story we meet lots of well-known characters in a dark and foggy forest. We have used the story to recognise rhyming words and describe our favourite characters.

Why not visit the website below to listen to the story online...?

Phonics

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:37pm

In Reception we have begun Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme. In this phase we are learning how to correctly pronounce and write the following sounds:

  • Set 1: s, a, t, p.
  • Set 2: i, n, m, d.
  • Set 3: g, o, c, k.
  • Set 4: ck, e, u, r.
  • Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss.

Alongside teaching the above sounds we have started to teach children the skills of segmenting and blending. Segmenting is when children are able to identify each sound in the word, they then blend the sounds together to read the word.

For example, s/a/t as children say the sounds faster they should hear that the word says 'sat.' For further information take a look at the following website which has further information, resources and games that you can use at home.

Reading Books

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:27pm

Reading is an important partnership between home and school and one that we value at Ravensbury Primary. Please can you make sure that you spend at least 10 minutes each night with your child sharing their reading book. As the children are becoming more confident in their Phonics and learning the sounds they will soon begin to use the skills of segmenting and blending to support reading words.

At this early stage talking about the pictures and asking questions linked to the characters, places and experiences in the book is all vital skills in supporting children with their early reading skills.

When you share the reading book at home please comment or tick that it has been shared in the reading record, and make sure it is in school every day. Reading books will be changed every Friday.

Samuel Pepys

Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 8:16pm

This week we are learning all about Samuel Pepys and why he is an important person to remember when we are thinking about the Great Fire of London.

We are going to write our own diary entries, imagining that we were there. We will need to think about what we could see, smell, touch, taste and hear and also describe how we would be feeling. To do this we are going to be doing some role play!

Here are some examples of a diary entry we have written so far ...

Wake up! Wake up! Dad shook me awake in my bed. He had some terrifying news! London is on fire and 300 houses have already burned down. We raced out of the house into the street because the fire was spreading to our house.

One dark night my mum woke me up in my bed. She said that London is on fire and we need to leave our house! We raced to the bakery so the baker could explain what happened. The baker explained that he had started the fire. My mum was crying because she was so worried!

What a fabulous start to our diary writing! I cannot wait to read some more!

Keep up the hard work everybody

Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 8:08pm

This week in our English lessons we have been learning how to write a glossary using Great Fire of London terminology.

Do you know what a fire hook is and what it was used for during the Great Fire of London? Or what a monument is and why it was built? If not then be sure to visit our classroom to read all about it!

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Bridges!

Date: 9th Nov 2019 @ 2:35pm

For our Connected Curriculum launch on 'Why does the world need great inventions?' The children worked in teams of 3-6, to create a bridge using only Spaghetti and Marshmallows.

The rules they had to abide by were:

- You can ONLY use spaghetti and marshmallows

- You cannot use resources from other tables

- Your bridge can be any design

- EVERYONE in your team must work together

- You have 20 minutes

When their time was up, we tested each bridge to see if it could hold the weight of a toy car for 10 seconds, without falling over and without anyone touching it. If your team succeeded, you earnt yourself five house points each!

I am delighted to announce that every team managed to create an bridge that held the weight of the toy car. They all worked well together, and tested a variety of designs.

Which was your favourite bridge design?

Shape

Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 9:30pm

2D and 3D shapes

This week we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have been learning the names and properties of these shapes. We know that 2D shapes are shapes that are flat, that we can't hold and 3D shapes are chunky and are something that we can hold.

We have been having great fun making towers, straw and lollypop stick shapes and 3D shapes with the resources in our provision.

V.I.P Art Gallery

Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 9:23pm

Our Very Important People art gallery

As part of our Connected Curriculum learning we have been thinking about the people who are important to us. The children looked into different artists like Pablo Picasso and Andy Warholl and created portraits of their special people. The children decided that they wanted to have a chance to make their important person or people feel special so they decided to create an art gallery for the morning so that their grown ups could see their beautiful work and smile. Here are a few pictures of us creating our master pieces...

Mrs Pig needs help!

Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 9:08pm

Mrs Pig has been in touch. She's worried about her three little pigs. They've left home but there is a big bad wolf on the loose! Mrs Pig has asked for our help to keep the three little pigs safe....

This week we have started to sequence the story of the three little pigs, we have found the important parts and have re told the story to one another lots of times. We have decided to write the story of the three little pigs again, but this time we are going to find solutions to make sure that the three little pigs are safe.

World War Two topic launch

Date: 6th Nov 2019 @ 11:02pm

Today was exciting as we went back in time to September 3rd 1939 to the day World War Two began. We all enjoyed being in role and taking part in a school day with our war names and meeting our war teachers... Miss Gilbertson and Miss Wilson. We were just taking part in our school dance when the siren went...then it was straight back to our rooms to gather around the "wireless" and listen to Neville Chamberlain's speech.Over the next few weeks we will be researching how war began and what life was like for people during the Blitz. Click here to find out more and click the picture below to hear Neville Chamberlain's speech.

Digital Wallpaper (Part 1)

Date: 27th Oct 2019 @ 12:49pm

We have really enjoyed our William Morris art project! We celeberated our beautiful designs by turning them into a digital wallpaper! They look AMAZING!

We used oil pastel and then felt to create our tile, then chose our favourite medium to use as the base of our wallpaper. We then used Pic Collage on the iPads to duplicate and crop our images (countless times) to create these magnificent designs.

Can you find yours? (if it's not here, check the next blog!)

Y6 have been working hard on past participles today. Do you know when we need to use them ?

Quarry Bank Mill

Date: 16th Oct 2019 @ 3:15pm

We have had SUCH a brilliant time learning about the Victorians this half term! We've learnt so many fascinating facts about what it was like working in mills and factories, and have been shocked at how poor the working conditions were for many...including children as young as five!

We're currently busy completing our D&T project, where we are using textiles to design a repeated pattern in the style of the famous Victorian artist, poet, designer and manufactuer - William Morris. Keep your eyes peeled on our class page to see our fantastic designs!

In the meantime, check out the photos to get a peek into the wonderful time we had at Quarry Bank Mill this half term.

BBC's Live Lesson!

Date: 10th Oct 2019 @ 7:20pm

Today, year 5 were fortunate enough to take part in BBC's Live Lesson, focussing on a growth mindset, and wellbeing.

We explored our own emotions, and how sometimes they can be difficult to express. Children looked at a variety of techiniques that allow them to understand what they are feeling and how to express this, for example, writing poetry. We also had the opportunity to explore a growth mindset, and how we can try to incorporate this in every day learning (remember, you can't do it yet!) . Finally, we were shown the mindfulness 'hand' breathing technique.

Who knew it was so easy to regulate your breathing through only using your hand?

I can confidently say, that we have been left with some fabulous new ideas of what to do when we're feeling overwhelmed.

If you want to learn more about the BBC live lesson, or watch it again at home, this is the link you need:
