Year 6 visit to the Imperial War Museum

Date: 14th Nov 2019 @ 11:40pm

We had a brilliant visit to the Imperial War Museum North last week. We found out lots about the Blitz and the effect of war on different people's lives. We especially enjoyed the BIG PICTURE SHOW which was projected on the large walls of the museum and told real people's stories and memories from the Second World War- our new topic this term. It was really special as we commemorated Remembrance Sunday last week when we remember soldiers who have fought in all wars.

Marvellous Mathematicians

Date: 14th Nov 2019 @ 11:54am

Today, we have been practising how to multiply numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. We used place value charts to practice, before challenging ourselves with some tackling word problems!

Tomorrow we will tackle dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. What will we have to do differently?

What could you do at home to practice?

Remembrance Day 2019

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 10:11pm

We watched a short animation in class explaining why we wear poppies and then sat together as a class listening to the last post and looking at a field of poppies. All of the children were very respectful as they sat quietly thinking about the people they love.

Who is visiting our class today?

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 10:05pm

There have been lots of different characters appearing in our class over the last week. Here's one of them. Which book do you think we are learning about?

Clue: It's NOT Goldilocks and the Three Bears

COLOUR MONSTER!

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 10:01pm

Have you met the COLOUMONSTER? His feelings get very mixed up and we have been learning how to help him name the feelings and recognise them. How are you feeling? Are you yellow or red or blue?

Sparkle and Shine!

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:56pm

Twinkle twinkle shining bright, see our fireworks light up the night.

Look at the joy on our faces and our friends faces as we created a background for our firework pre-writing pictures.

Firework Dance

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:42pm

What words do you think of when you think of fireworks? We imitated the sounds and movements of fireworks along with a firework display we watched on the whiteboard. We thought of words like

POP BANG SIZZLE CRACKLE

Watch this display and create your own dance

Bonfire Night Shape Rockets

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:38pm

We have been learning abut shapes and ways to use them to create pictures as part of our Bonfire week celebrations. We used shapes from the maths area, we printed shape rockets and build a huge one  in our outdoor construction area. Look at our amazing work. Everyone ready for blast off!

1, 2, a few or more?

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:32pm

After collecting lots of Autumn objects we sorted them into groups and talked about how many were in the groups. There were only a few sticks but lots of leaves.

Yummy Harvest Soup

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:24pm

When you've had another busy week in Nursery, what better way to relax than by cooking soup with fresh harvest vegetables. We touched and smelt and tasted some of the raw vegetables before snapping and slicing and cooking them. Some of us loved it! Some of us weren't so sure indecision We can also rehearse our cooking in the home corner. "Do you want some sweetcorn soup?"

5 Little Pumpkins

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:20pm

Here is a link to the Harvest Festival song we sang in Nursery. Be careful though! Once you start singing it you just can't stop.

Autumn Leaf Play

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:01pm

We like to explore outdoors and find ways to use the leaves that fall in the outside area. Wouldn't you like to make leaf angels, make piles and then throw them leaves up and catch them as they fall? Learning is such fun!

Fascinating Friction

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 3:08pm

In Science, we have been learning all about friction. We did a scientific investigation to see which materials caused the most friction on a toy car.

Robots!

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 10:23am

Today, Year 5 started a very exciting adventure on the skills of building a robot!

For the next 6 weeks, we will be building robots (using the help of Ipads), that will eventually play football. We are very excited and greatful of the help from Manchester City, where a coach will come to school each week to support us.

We will keep you updated with each stage of the creating process - today was the first of many.

London's burning!

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 9:29am

Yesterday we thought about what it would be like to be in London when the great fire was happening.

We acted out how we thought people would be responding during the time of the fire.

Talitha - I was feeling sad because six people died.

Tiwan - I was feeling upset because people were homeless.

Noah - I was sad because the city was burning down.

Aaron - we were running to get buckets of water to try and stop the fire.

Lacey - we got some gunpowder to try and make a firebreak!

Rahman - we made a firebreak to try and stop the fire from spreading.

Annabelle - a firebreak is a gap between the houses to try and stop the fire.

Daniel - we were rowing a boat because we needed to get out of London

Millie - we pulled down houses using a firehook.

Payton - a fire hook is a big pole that was used to pull down houses.

Building Bridges

Date: 13th Nov 2019 @ 8:59am

We had so much fun yesterday morning building a bridge which would hold the weight of a toy car...out of marshmallows and spaghetti! After lots of teamwork (and mess!), we created some very successful designs!

We're really excited for this new half term's topic - "Why does the world need great inventions?" - and will be finding out about lots of different inventions and the impact they have had!

The Foggy Foggy Forest

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:50pm

For the last two weeks we have started to think about light and dark through the story 'The Foggy Foggy Forest' by Nick Sharratt. In this story we meet lots of well-known characters in a dark and foggy forest. We have used the story to recognise rhyming words and describe our favourite characters.

Why not visit the website below to listen to the story online...?

Phonics

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:37pm

In Reception we have begun Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds Phonics programme. In this phase we are learning how to correctly pronounce and write the following sounds:

  • Set 1: s, a, t, p.
  • Set 2: i, n, m, d.
  • Set 3: g, o, c, k.
  • Set 4: ck, e, u, r.
  • Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss.

Alongside teaching the above sounds we have started to teach children the skills of segmenting and blending. Segmenting is when children are able to identify each sound in the word, they then blend the sounds together to read the word.

For example, s/a/t as children say the sounds faster they should hear that the word says 'sat.' For further information take a look at the following website which has further information, resources and games that you can use at home.

Reading Books

Date: 12th Nov 2019 @ 8:27pm

Reading is an important partnership between home and school and one that we value at Ravensbury Primary. Please can you make sure that you spend at least 10 minutes each night with your child sharing their reading book. As the children are becoming more confident in their Phonics and learning the sounds they will soon begin to use the skills of segmenting and blending to support reading words.

At this early stage talking about the pictures and asking questions linked to the characters, places and experiences in the book is all vital skills in supporting children with their early reading skills.

When you share the reading book at home please comment or tick that it has been shared in the reading record, and make sure it is in school every day. Reading books will be changed every Friday.

Samuel Pepys

Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 8:16pm

This week we are learning all about Samuel Pepys and why he is an important person to remember when we are thinking about the Great Fire of London.

We are going to write our own diary entries, imagining that we were there. We will need to think about what we could see, smell, touch, taste and hear and also describe how we would be feeling. To do this we are going to be doing some role play!

Here are some examples of a diary entry we have written so far ...

Wake up! Wake up! Dad shook me awake in my bed. He had some terrifying news! London is on fire and 300 houses have already burned down. We raced out of the house into the street because the fire was spreading to our house.

One dark night my mum woke me up in my bed. She said that London is on fire and we need to leave our house! We raced to the bakery so the baker could explain what happened. The baker explained that he had started the fire. My mum was crying because she was so worried!

What a fabulous start to our diary writing! I cannot wait to read some more!

Keep up the hard work everybody

Great Fire of London Glossary

Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 8:08pm

This week in our English lessons we have been learning how to write a glossary using Great Fire of London terminology.

Do you know what a fire hook is and what it was used for during the Great Fire of London? Or what a monument is and why it was built? If not then be sure to visit our classroom to read all about it!

Mayan Exhibition

Date: 11th Nov 2019 @ 2:18pm

For our experience, we invited our grown ups in to school for our Mayan Exhibition so we could show them all of our amazing work and share everything we have learned.

Spaghetti and Marshmallow Bridges!

Date: 9th Nov 2019 @ 2:35pm

For our Connected Curriculum launch on 'Why does the world need great inventions?' The children worked in teams of 3-6, to create a bridge using only Spaghetti and Marshmallows.

The rules they had to abide by were:

- You can ONLY use spaghetti and marshmallows

- You cannot use resources from other tables

- Your bridge can be any design

- EVERYONE in your team must work together

- You have 20 minutes

When their time was up, we tested each bridge to see if it could hold the weight of a toy car for 10 seconds, without falling over and without anyone touching it. If your team succeeded, you earnt yourself five house points each!

I am delighted to announce that every team managed to create an bridge that held the weight of the toy car. They all worked well together, and tested a variety of designs.

Which was your favourite bridge design?

We care, We soar’
