World Book Day 2020!

Date: 5th Mar 2020 @ 12:02pm

We're loving celebrating World Book Day today!

We've taken part in special activities all week, but are especially focusing on celebrating all things Traditional Tales today! We're having great fun doing some creative activities to contribute to a shared display for Years 5 and 6 linked to our focus tale: 'The Three Little Pigs'.

From creating pig-based recipes to writing on tissues, we're exploring the two sides of the wolf - was he really a greedy, pig-eating villain? Or was there a more innocent explanation for his behaviour...?

Symbols of Easter

Date: 5th Mar 2020 @ 8:20am

Yesterday afternoon, we looked at different symbols that represented Easter. We enjoyed learning about the different days in Holy Week and the symbols to look out for which represent Easter. Some of those things were the cross, a lamb, baby chicks, easter eggs and finally hot cross buns (which Miss Humphreys let us try)!

Some of us had never tried a hot cross bun before but the verdict was: MMMM YUMMY!

Making burglar alarms

Date: 4th Mar 2020 @ 12:46pm

We have been working hard to create burglar alarms to help Anne Frank stay safe in the Annex during WW2.

We used buzzers and bulbs in a circuit with a switch that will be triggered by opening a box or a door.

Check back next week for the finished products!

Rock stars times tables practice

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 8:19pm

This week the children have been learning the 2,5,and 10' times tables. They enjoyed dressing up as TT rockstars and singing lots of diffferent songs to help them remember their number facts.

They enjoyed singing songs and playing games!

Wonderful Weighing !

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 8:09pm

This week the children have been using the balance scales to weigh objects. They have been using comparitive language e.g. heavier, heaviest, lighter and lightest to compare the weight of objects. Then the children weighed different objects and used non-standard measures e.g. cubes to find out how many cubes each object weighed.

The children then recorded their work using pictures and symbols. They enjoyed estimating how many cubes each object weighed.

Sharing books!

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 4:01pm

A huge thank you to the adults that joined us in our library session today! The children had a brillaint time sharing their favourite books with you, and listening to you talk about yours.

You are definitely welcome back :)

Mr Wolf...

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 2:54pm

As part of our World Book Day celebrations we discovered a new book about villains. The wolf from 'Little Red Riding Hood' has visited some other story characters and has taken some of their belongings too! Can you guess what the stories are by looking at the objects we have made? Watch us creating them and then see what happened when we shared our display with Mrs Hughes. She was amazed by our fabulous work.

Mrs Hughes has invited us to sit on her special reading chair in her office to share our love of books. We are so excited to see who will be the first to get to share a book with the Head!

World Book day

Date: 3rd Mar 2020 @ 2:17pm

We are getting ready for Ravenbury's World Book Day on Thursday by ordering the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Which character  are you dressing up as?

Rockstars!

Date: 2nd Mar 2020 @ 4:33pm

We had such a fabulous day dressing up as rockstars! All of the TTRockstar log ins have gone home, and I'm looking forward to setting you all challenges.

Who is the quickest timestable rockstar in our class?

Marvellous Maths

Date: 2nd Mar 2020 @ 4:17pm

Following on from last weeks lesson on translating shapes, Year 5 focused on reflecting shapes today. It was a little bit tricky at first, but eventually we were all feeling confident!

Can you practice this at home?

Setting up a brooder for the chicks to live in

Date: 2nd Mar 2020 @ 2:03pm

It's an amazing experience meeting a chick for the first time. Some of us were a little bit nervous and some of us felt very excited. After being in the incubator for a full day, the chicks were ready to move into a new home. We talked about how to set up a place to keep the chicks warm and to give them a place to eat and drink in.

We then got to touch a chick for the first time. It was very special. Some of the juniors even came down to spend time with our lovely chicks.

Robert Falcon Scott

Date: 1st Mar 2020 @ 10:21pm

To put ourselves into Robert Falcon Scott's shoes and give ourselves (only a slight) understanding of how cold the Antarctic is, we went outside without jumpers on. We thought about ways we might keep ourselves warm. There were lots of ideas such as; doing exercise, eating hot food/drinking hot drinks, huddling together, rubbing your hands together, wrapping up warm and lighting a fire.

The Antarctic

Date: 1st Mar 2020 @ 10:18pm

This week we launched our new topic - why do some animals live in cold places and others in hot?

In history we are learning all about the explorer Robert Falcon Scott and his journey to be the first person to reach the South Pole. In class we had a debate about whether he should go on his expedition or not and thought of reasons for and against. Miss Calvert was blown away by our debating skills!

Some of our ideas were:

What if you get lost?

I'll just bring a map with me.

But it's very windy in the Antarctic - what if your map blows away?

I'll make sure I bring more than one map and attach it to me so it doesn't blow away.

If I'm the first person to reach the South Pole I will be famous.

Well what's the point of being famous if there's no phones or TV for anyone to know you're famous?

I'll just tell everybody what I did and then everyone will know.

The children were fantastic at debating and taking it in turns to present their balanced argument. They really built upon their skills from when we had a debate in Year One and used the opportunity to show off their new knowledge about Antarctica and also to show their understanding of the past and how different things were a long time ago. For example, one of the children mentioned Robert Falcon Scott going to the Antarctic on a plane. We then thought about whether this was true and linked it to our learning in Year One. Had the Wright brothers made the first flight yet in 1901? We then thought about Scott's journey to the Antarctic and where that would be situated on a timeline in history - had the first flight been made yet and if so were people travelling on aeroplanes? Would Scott have taken a plane to the Antarctic or would he have travelled on a ship? It was such an interesting discussion and the children really showed off their historical knowledge.

Wellbeing Workshop!

Date: 29th Feb 2020 @ 4:47pm

On Wednesday, Year 5 had an amazing opportunity to emerge themselves in a wellbeing workshop! We tried 10 different activities (some that were easy, and some that were challenging!) and discussed different ways we can help our brains if we are faced with a tricky situation.

We have also begun to do some mindfulness mediation after lunch, to help ready our brains for learning.

Greek Food Tasting!

Date: 29th Feb 2020 @ 4:45pm

In order to launch our learning for 'what is it like to live in Greece?' we decided to taste Greek Cuisine!

We tried everything from pitta bread, homous, tzatziki and stuffed vine leaves, to Greek yogurt, figs and pomegranate. The stuffed vine leaves were a class favourite (after much persuasion to try them in the first place!) But not many of us liked the figs (myself included!)

What an exciting way to emerge ourselves in Greece!

Aloha to reading!

Date: 29th Feb 2020 @ 1:29pm

The children returned back to school this week and were surprised to see that the classroom had a new reading area. The reading area has completely changed and is now a relaxing beach area where they can sit, relax and read a book of their choice, for pleasure. It is extremely popular and the children are constantly asking to read. Come and have a look when you drop your child off or collect your child at the beginning or end of the day.

Pancake maths!

Date: 29th Feb 2020 @ 9:03am

This week the children have been celebrating all things pancake!

The children have been weighing the different ingredients needed for making pancakes. They have used non standard measures to find the heaviest and lightest ingredients and have had great fun flipping pancakes and joining in in our pancake day competitions!

Behaviour Star

Date: 28th Feb 2020 @ 5:20pm

Congratualtions to Dan who is this week's Behaviour Star! Well done on a great effort in class this week :)

Monet Water Lilies

Date: 28th Feb 2020 @ 3:11pm

This week, we have been studying the artist Claude Monet. He was an impressionist artist and the name 'impressionism' comes from a painting Monet exhibited called 'Impression, Sunrise'. Impressionists painted everyday scenes, however they did not want to paint a realistic picture but an 'impression' of what they could see. We created our own Monet inspired artwork based on his 1906 painting 'Water Lilies'.

Science Vocabulary!

Date: 28th Feb 2020 @ 1:26pm

Over the past half term we have been counting how many times we have used subject specific vocabulary in science. What this means is words which are either used specifically in that subject area, or common words which are used with special meaning in that subject area.

Our subject area for science is the 'Human Life Cycle' where we have been studying how we grow and change from the time we are born, to when we become a senior citizen.

Have a look at our tally chart for vocabulary choices!

ALGEBRA

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 6:46pm

This week we have been studying algebra in maths- using letters for missing values and working out word problens using simple formula.

Play the game below if you want some more practice.

Year 6 well-being session

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 6:31pm

Today was our session with the well-being coaches. We had a lot of fun moving around in teams of three to try different challenges. We had to try and keep each other going and think of strategies to help us when we found it tricky. We had to think about what could we do if we felt frustrated or embarrassed or cross if we couldn't do it straight away? Check out the video to see how we got on...

They're here

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 6:23pm

They're here! At 7.30am there were 5 hatched chicks and by 6pm we had 9!

Electricity!

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 4:08pm

We have been investigating electricity today.
First we had to see what we could remember about how to build a simple circuit.

Then we decided to investigate how we could change the brightness of the bulb - we had to think about what might affect our circuit and how we could keep everything a fair test.

Have a look and see how we did!

If you'd like to investigate circuits more at home, have a look at these websites:

Wellbeing Sessions

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 4:02pm

We had such a fin day today taking part in some wellbeing sessions with Manchester City.
We talked about how we can feel when we find things a challenge and how we can change our mindset to help solve a problem.

What strategies did you come up with today that will help you with your learning?
